Governor Cuomo was in Afghanistan over the weekend with a bi-partisan delegation of governors at the invitation of the U.S. Department of Defense. Approximately 270 members of the New York National Guard are currently deployed in Afghanistan, approximately 900 members of Fort Drum’s 10th Mountain Division are stationed in Afghanistan.

Governor Cuomo announced the completion of a new round of targeted crude oil tank car and rail inspections, to protect New Yorkers from the potential dangers associated with the transport of crude oil by freight rail companies. State and federal teams again found numerous defects during the inspections last week, which examined 766 crude oil tank cars and approximately 167 miles of track. Since the inspection campaign began in February, the State and its federal partners have inspected more than 6,300 rail cars and 2,200 miles of track, uncovered 658 defects, and issued 9 hazardous materials violations.
