The groundbreaking ceremony for the new Amphenol site in Sidney was held this afternoon.  Congressman Chris Gibson was one of the dignitaries that spoke to the crowd; he said that this project was especially important to him as a military veteran:

Construction for the new site on Delaware avenue in Sidney next to K-Mart will begin shortly.

State Police arrested 50-year-old Martin Nowalk of Greene, for one count of 1st degree Rape, 1 count of Criminal Sexual Act, and 1 count of Endangering the Welfare of a Child.  The arrest followed an investigation into alleged inappropriate sexual contact with a female child under the age of 13, Nowalk was arraigned in the Town of Greene Court and remanded to the Chenango County Jail without bail pending future court proceedings.

Governor Cuomo today announced that New York State would use available funds from the recently approved HUD Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery program to cover the 25 percent non-federal match requirement of property buyout costs associated with Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee.  Approximately 1,143 properties in 17 affected counties have been processed for buyouts under FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program. Included in the 17 counties are Broome, Chenango, Delaware, & Otsego Counties.

State University Police in Albany reported that an Oneonta native was found deceased on the campus Saturday morning.   18-year-old Jared Trotti was found dead in a visitor parking lot on the campus, he was just finishing up his freshman year at Elizabethtown College in Pennsylvania following his 2012 graduation from Oneonta High School.  The cause of death will be announced pending the results of an autopsy.

State Police at Norwich arrested 21-year-old Jeffrey Montgomery of South New Berlin for Driving While Intoxicated with a BAC result of .21%, well than twice the legal limit.  The arrest resulted from a traffic stop on State Route 8 in Guilford; Montgomery was issued tickets returnable in the Town of Guilford Court on May 23rd.

The 23rd Ed Wessels canoe regatta was held Saturday on the Susquehanna river from Otego to Sidney, and featured top pros that are expected to compete in the upcoming General Clinton Canoe Regatta.  This years Wessels regatta winners were Steve Rankinen of Pennsylvania & Matt Strybe of Indiana, beating out 7 time General Clinton winner Andy Treibold and & 5 time winner Steve Lajoie  (Lajwa) of Quebec by only 9 seconds.  Treibold & Lajoie struggled early in Saturday’s race with a hole in their canoe; they are expected to return to the area to defend their Clinton title on memorial day.

The fifth annual bicycle ride for benefit of Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care will be held on Sunday May 26th starting in Margaretville.  The Tour de Pepacton is sponsored by the Catskill Mountain Cycling Club and the MARK Project; the race features two choices of distance, 25 around the reservoir, or 60 miles of challenging terrain.  Registration is available at USACycling.org, and click on “clubs.” scroll down until you see “Tour de Pepacton.” More information is available at 607 326-4734.

Classes at Broome Community College have been postponed until 5:30 this afternoon.  A power outage is blamed for the cancellation; officials expect to have electricity restored later this afternoon.
