About 3,000 firefighters & 80 fire trucks came to Owego yesterday to pay their respects to captain Matthew Porcari of the Owego Fire Department,  Porcari died Monday night when a floor collapsed in a burning building in Newark Valley,  firefighter Daniel Gavin was injured in that incident, he was eventually taken to the burn unit at Upstate Medical center in Syracuse for treatment.  The fire occurred last Monday night at 871 Chamberlain Road in Newark valley at around 11:00 PM.

STATE OFFICIALS will visit the SOUTHERN TIER this week, to discuss the NY SAFE ACT.  State police announced that Teams made up of members of the New York State Police and Division of Criminal Justice Services will be available to meet local law enforcement and answer questions from New Yorkers regarding NY SAFE Act tomorrow at 12:00 PM at the Endwell Volunteer Fire Hall at 3508 Country Club Road

The Broome county sheriffs department arrested 24-year-old Lauren Smith of Binghamton, after she allegedly drove into a deputy’s patrol car while she was intoxicated at around 2:30 Saturday morning on Prospect Street in Binghamton.  Deputies reported that Smith’s 1-year-old child was in the back seat and was not properly fastened in a child safety seat,  and that Smith’s BAC  was .18%, more than twice the legal limit.  Smith was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated under Leandra’s Law and endangering the welfare of a child.

Governor Cuomo announced  the Stable Rate Pension Contribution Option today. The plan follows last year’s Implementation of the tier-6 pension rank, the Stable Rate Pension Contribution Option will allow local governments and school districts to access the savings of Tier VI immediately,  Because they are given the option for a stable pension contribution rate that significantly reduces near-term payments but still keeps the pension systems fully funded over the long term.  Savings for Chenango, Otsego and Delaware counties would be slightly over $2 million dollars in the first year.

Area State Senator John Bonacic will continue to Chair two State Senate Committees for the 2013/2014 Session.  Bonacic will Chair the Senate Judiciary Committee, as well as the Senate Committee on Racing, Gaming & Wagering.   Bonacic said that With respect to Racing, Gaming & Wagering Committee chairmanship, Last year, both the Senate and Assembly passed a Constitutional Amendment to enable up to 7 casinos across the State, If the Amendment is passed again this year, by the legislature, voters will have the final say on the November Ballot.  Potential casino locations include the Concord, the Nevele’s and Grossinger’s in the Catskills.

The 3 Chamber Collaboration Dinner scheduled for tonight in Unadilla has been rescheduled.  Chamber members from the Unadilla, Sidney & Bainbridge chambers will meet next Monday, February 4th. At 5:30 at the Unadilla Community Center on Main Street.

The U.S. postal service announced that the price of postage stamps went up yesterday.   the price of a stamp goes up by one cent., making a 1st class stamp costs 46 cents, the cost of a postcard   increased from 32 to 33 cents.
