The 10 regional councils are making their presentations today & tomorrow, to funding projects with a portion of the $700 million in state aid being offered. The Hudson Valley and Finger Lakes councils will make their presentations Monday afternoon. The Southern Tier council will make its pitch Tuesday. The next round of funding is expected to be announced in December.

Otsego County held its 17h annual Hazardous Waste Collection Day this past weekend. On Friday morning, a satellite event was held in Unadilla at the Town Highway garage, where 110 cars dropped off hazardous materials from 116 households. The main event was held on Saturday at the Meadows Office Complex, with 362 cars dropping off hazardous materials from 378 households. Volunteers diverted latex paint from the waste stream, it will be re-mixed by Golden Artist Colors & distributed at a later time.

Governor Cuomo, New Jersey Governor Christie, US Homeland Security Secretary Johnson and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio are among the participants this afternoon at 3:00 PM at a Bi-State Meeting on Regional Security and Preparedness in Manhattan. Governor Cuomo and Governor Christie announced that they would discuss existing security and preparedness coordination with representatives from the FBI, & from the New York & New Jersey Homeland Security, Emergency Services, State Police, National Guard, and other law enforcement and public safety agencies.

State Police arrested 29-year-old Benjamin Dickey of Sidney for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance; they also arrested 26-year-old Scott Correll of Afton for Unlawful Possession of Marihuana. The arrests resulted from a vehicle stop for a defective brake light while driving on Main Street in Oneonta. Troopers determined that Correll possessed cocaine and Dickey possessed 4.8 grams of marihuana. Both were issued tickets returnable to the Village of Sidney Court on September 23rd.

Broome County Executive Debbie Preston will present her proposed 2015 budget tonight before a special session of the legislature. The proposal will be the first draft of the spending plan that will fund county government next year. Last year, a 1.8 percent property tax increase was adopted for the $376 million 2014 budget. Preston would not say whether another increase is being proposed for 2015

US Senator Chuck Schumer wants to ban 10 flame-retardants found in items such as children’s toys. A Duke University study found flame-retardants in upholstered furniture and children’s products like toys, pajamas & pillows to be highly toxic. the chemicals have been linked to developmental delays & rare cancers in firefighters as well as cancers and hormone disruption in children. Schumer’s bill would also require the Consumer Product Safety Commission to study all other flame-retardants to identify other potential dangers
