Long Time Area Assemblyman Cliff Crouch announced earlier this year that he would retire at the end of this session, and has endorsed former Norwich Police Chief Joe Angelino for his Assembly Seat.  Crouch announced today that he has filed a lawsuit against Assembly Republican Candidate Nick Libous:

Governor Cuomo gave his Daily Coronavirus briefing in Albany today.  Cuomo stated that his idea of “Reimagining Education” has been misunderstood:

The state is now up to 354,000 positive Coronavirus cases, there were another 112 deaths Tuesday, the State death toll is up to 22,976, Hospitalizations & Intubations continue to decrease statewide.

The State Department of Labor today announced that the backlog of pending unemployment benefit applications has been reduced to 7,580, following the crush of applications since March 1st because of the COVID 19 pandemic. & state shutdown. Lingering unprocessed applications includes those that are missing critical federally mandated information and cannot be processed, as well as duplicates, abandoned claims & those that are being investigated for potential fraud.  So far more than 2 million unemployment benefit applications have been processed, and those New Yorkers have received over $10 billion in benefits.

State Police at Troop C in Sidney held their annual Memorial Ceremony today.  Each May, each Troop honors the members of the State Police who have given their lives in the line of duty.  Acting Troop Commander, Captain Jeffrey VanAuken addressed the troops.    The ceremony was small and private due to the COVID pandemic.

Officials with the 2020 summer Otsenango PONY League program announced today that they will postpone baseball activities, as they do not foresee high school athletic facilities becoming available for June and July due to mass gathering issues with the Coronavirus pandemic.   This will be the 1st time in over 50 years that they will not have the summer baseball program, they have discussed the possibility of a Fall league that would start the weekend after Labor Day and run for 6 weekends, playing two games on either Saturday or Sunday.

State Police received a 911 call at approximately 5:50 Tuesday afternoon that 79-year-old Beverly Golembeski was missing from a seasonal residence on Reed Road in the town of Kortright.  The call to 911 was made by Golembeski’s husband; Police were told that Mrs. Golembeski suffers from dementia.  Last night at about 10:49 pm, she was located by a forest ranger approximately half a mile from her residence; she was in good condition but was checked out by EMS as a precaution.

The Broome County Health Department announced that they are now up to 431 cases of the Coronavirus, and they now report 32 deaths from the virus.  245 patients are being monitored by the Health department; they have had 326 recoveries and have conducted over 7500 tests.

Chenango County Public Health updates their COVID 19 numbers today.  They have 118 positive cases, with 4 deaths, 31 Mandatory Quarantines, 3 are currently hospitalized, 85 have Recovered, and they have performed 2032 tests so far.

The Otsego County Department of Health reported their 5th death Tuesday related to coronavirus. The Department has not had a new case to report since April 30th, they have had 62 total confirmed cases, there are no hospitalizations, 57 have recovered, 4 people are quarantined, and 279 people have been released from quarantine.

WCDO NEWS TUESDAY 5-19-20

Endicott Police confirmed that the body found near the Susquehanna River Monday morning was 30-year-old Dominic Davy of Endicott.  Davy was reported missing on April 10. The investigation into the cause of death is continuing, there was no indication of foul play.  Davy was a professor at Binghamton University.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a domestic dispute in the Town of Walton on April 7th,  during their investigation, they learned that 32 year-old Katie Komosinski, of Walton, endangered a young child by driving her car with the child clinging to the side of the vehicle.  Upon completion of their investigation, Sheriff’s Deputies forwarded the complaint to the Walton Town Court which issued a Criminal Summons last week, Deputies located and arrested Komosinski Sunday at her residence and served the criminal summons, she will appear in the Walton Town Court on a later date.

The State Department of Labor today announced that $9.2 billion in unemployment benefits have been paid to New Yorkers since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. This figure includes nearly $290 million in back pay that was processed in the last two weeks and which was unlocked through a new, streamlined process that allows New Yorkers to submit Federally mandated weekly certifications they had missed, unlocking previous weeks’ benefits.

The State Department of Health today announced that 2 pieces of the Comprehensive Tobacco Control Policy take effect today. The first law prohibits the sale of flavored nicotine vapor products, and the second bans the sale of all tobacco and nicotine vapor products in pharmacies. The law does not include flavorless and tobacco flavored nicotine vapor products.

Governor Cuomo gave his daily Coronavirus briefing in Buffalo today, as the Western New York region added over 525 Tracers over the weekend, allowing them to enter into the Phase 1 reopening plan.  Governor Cuomo reiterated that Phase 2 could start in 2 weeks based on a key fact about the Coronavirus:

State Attorney General Letitia James announced that due to the continuing Coronavirus issue, the state has again renewed an order to halt the collection of medical and student debt owed to the State of New York that was specifically referred to the Office of the Attorney General for collection for an additional 30-day period through June 16th.   After this 30-day period, the Office of the Attorney General will reassess the needs of state residents for another possible extension.

The State Health Department announced that they now have over 345,000 positive Coronavirus cases, with another 2762 positive tests Thursday.  Hospitalizations were down to about 6500, there were 132 deaths, bringing the state death toll to 22,304 since March.

The State Health Department reported over 2300 new Coronavirus cases state wide Thursday, bringing the state total to 343,051.  Another 157 people died Wednesday from the virus; about 7000 people are still hospitalized.

The State Health department continues to monitor 105 cases in children ranging from 1 year old to 21 years old, who test positive for the Coronavirus, but presented with a different set of symptoms from adults, featuring inflamed blood vessels & inflammation of the heart, but without lung issues.  3 children have died, the state Health department is sharing their findings, 6 countries & 16 other states are no looking into similar issues among children & the virus.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a domestic dispute in the Town of Delhi. While conducting interviews of the individuals involved, Deputies noted an odor of marijuana in the residence, they discovered & seized marihuana plants and about an ounce of processed marihuana, they arrested 45-year old Colby Loveless of Delhi for unlawfully cultivating marijuana and unlawful possession of marijuana, Loveless was later released on appearance tickets for Delhi Town Court at a later date.

State Police arrested 26 year old Eugene Buzie of Oneonta for Menacing, after Troopers were dispatched to a domestic dispute at a residence on County Highway 48 in the town of Otego. Buzie allegedly threatened a victim with a knife during an argument; he was located near Lantern Hill Trailer Park and arrested.  He was arraigned virtually and released on his own recognizance.  An order of protection was issued by the judge to the victim.  Buzie is scheduled to appear in the town of Otego court on June 18, 2020.

State Police arrested 62 year old Ronald Bronson of West Winfield for the Overdriving, Torturing and Injuring Animals and Failure to Provide Proper Sustenance.   Bronson told troopers that his cows were running from the dog in the pasture, he fired a shot, missing the dog, it ran off, he located the dog and allegedly shot it a 2nd time, killing it.  Bronson was issued appearance tickets to the town of Plainfield court on September 2nd.

Tomorrow, 4 upstate regions will begin the 1st phase of the Re-Opening, following the statewide shutdown as the Coronavirus began to spread in Mid-March.  Kerri Green of Commerce Chenango is part of the “Southern Tier Regional Control Room” overseeing the reopening, she commented about the process:

The Southern Tier, Central New York, Mohawk Valley & the North Country will reopen starting tomorrow after meeting the 7 criteria established by the CDC  for safe re-opening, leaders have been appointed in each region to watch those 7 parameters, which can be viewed at forward.ny.gov. Governor Cuomo today said that there is some flexibility within the state guidelines for re-opening businesses, which will be figured out in accordance with the regional Control Rooms:

 Businesses that will be allowed to re-open include in Phase 1 are Manufacturing, Construction, Agriculture, Forestry, Fishing and Hunting, Retail  with curbside or in-store pickup or drop off only, plus Wholesale Trade.

A traffic-stop by Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies in East Meredith on Monday evening, led to the arrest of 25 year old Devyn Clum of Bloomville.  Deputies stopped a vehicle in East Meredith after observing the driver fail to stop at a stop sign, Deputies charged Clum with failure to stop at a stop sign, operating a motor vehicle with broken glass, & aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, and he was released & will appear in the Town of Meredith Court at a later date.

State Police and the Unadilla Emergency Squad responded Monday evening to Ben McCumber Road in the town of Unadilla for a report of an accidental death.   The investigation revealed that 80 year old William Marszal of Unadilla was clearing trees on the property & while pulling a downed tree, the downed tree uprooted another tree that then fell on Marszal causing head trauma.  Marszal was pronounced deceased on scene.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to an accident on Elk Creek Road in the Town of Meredith Sunday afternoon, resulting in tickets for 26 year old Brandon Bathrick of Oneonta.  Deputies ticketed Bathrick for unlicensed operation of motor vehicle and aggravated unlicensed operation of motor vehicle, after he struck a tree limb in the roadway.   Bathrick’s driver’s license was suspended as a result of his failure to pay outstanding vehicle and traffic fines in the Town of Milford, Town of Oneonta and City of Oneonta Courts, he was released & will appear in the Town of Meredith Court at a later date.

Local sales tax collections dropped 24.4 percent in April compared to April 2019, according to State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. Sales tax collections totaled $1.02 billion in April; Plummeting sales tax collections were widespread, leaving counties, cities and some other local governments short by about $327 million compared to last year.   March sales tax collections had already begun to show the impact of the COVID-19 shutdown–a decrease of 3.7% statewide.

Sidney Central School Alumni Association announced the cancellation of the All Class Reunion scheduled for July 17th through the 19th in Sidney.  The Association Board of Directors will meet later this month to assess whether they may be able to hold the event later this year, possibly in early October.

Secretary to the Governor Melissa DeRosa said that Nursing homes across the state will now have to test their employees twice a week to make sure that the vulnerable populations in nursing homes also so not see an increase in the Coronavirus cases:

The state has 338,000 cases of the Coronavirus since early March, another 195 people died from the virus Monday, bringing the state death toll to 21,845.

U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand announced new legislation to get internet coverage to more students, who are getting left behind in the learning process without have reliable broadband internet to keep up on their lessons or tests:

Senator Gillibrand said that the US Senate’s Emergency Educational Connections Act of 2020 would provide $4 billion in funding to ensure that all K-12 students have adequate home internet connectivity in order to continue their education during the pandemic.

The Bassett Hospital Network will begin to perform elective outpatient surgeries & non-urgent outpatient procedures that had topped with the Governor’s executive order in March, when the state faced the potential of not having g enough hospital beds to treat Coronavirus Patients.  In Otsego County, they have not had a positive test in over a week, and will proceed with caution, according to President & CEO of Bassett Healthcare Network Dr. William Streck:

The loss of revenue from all of the postponed elective surgeries was a major hit to the Bassett Health care systems bottom line according to Dr. Streck, which he said will take some time to get back to previous levels.

Chenango County Public Health announced that they are up to 111 positive Coronavirus cases, they currently have 37 people quarantined, 5 hospitalized, 79 people have recovered, 4 have died.

The Broome County Health Department today announced that they are up to 375 confirmed coronavirus cases, which now includes 25 deaths, 257 recoveries & 257 patients being monitored by the health department, which has now performed 5091 tests.

Maines Paper & Food Service notified employees that they would be closing a significant portion of their operation in Conklin.  A letter to employees stated that they had tried to sell the business & they also failed to secure paycheck protection loans from the federal government as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Delaware County Public Health is reporting no new cases of COVID-19, the known active cases in the County are now 8.  To date there have been 75 confirmed positive cases, 10 people are under mandatory quarantine 13 cases have been transferred out of the county, 3 are isolated in a hospital, 5 are recovering at home, 4 people are deceased and 50 have fully recovered.

New York State Health Department reported Sunday that they have 337,055 Coronavirus cases, Hospitalizations continue to decline, with about 7200 people being treated statewide,  161 people died on Sunday,  the state death total is now 21,640.

Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 67 year old Benjamin Izard of Norwich for Criminal Contempt and Harassment.   Izard is accused of violating an order of protection by harassing a protected party. Benjamin was arraigned using virtual arraignment and remanded to Chenango County Corrections on $500 cash bail.

Families in the Gilbertsville-Mount Upton Central School District are invited to pick up FREE dairy products at the school from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM this Wednesday, May 13th.  Free gallons of milk, yogurt, cheese, ice cream and eggs will be available while supplies last at GMU on State Highway 51, in Gilbertsville.  A drive-through distribution process has been set up & Residents are asked to stay in their vehicles until they are prompted to receive their products.  The Dairy Farmers of America Cooperative has teamed up with Dean Foods, the American Dairy Association North East, Chobani, Cabot, Hershey’s and Huff to offer these FREE dairy products on Wednesday.

The Broome County Health Department announced today that they are up to 371 Coronavirus cases since early March; they have 23 deaths, 241 recoveries & 217 patients being monitored by the Health Department.

Governor Cuomo announced that The State Department of Health is partnering with the NY Genome Center and Rockefeller University to conduct a genome and RNA sequencing study to better understand COVID-related illnesses in children and the possible genetic basis of the Kawasaki syndrome, following the deaths of 3 children from the Coronavirus:

There have been 85 reported cases in New York where children are experiencing symptoms similar to Kawasaki disease and toxic shock-like syndrome possibly due to COVID-19. The illness has taken the lives of a 5-year old in New York City, a 7-year old in Westchester County and a teenager in Suffolk County.

New York State Health Department reported Sunday that they have 335,395 Coronavirus cases, Hospitalizations continue to decline, with about 7900 people being treated, however 1100 new patients tested positive for the virus Saturday & Sunday statewide,  207 people died on Saturday  the state death total is now 21,478.

Chenango County Public Health announced more positive Coronavirus cases Sunday, bringing their total up to 109.  They currently have 42 people quarantined, 5 are hospitalized, 4 have died & 79 have recovered.

Delaware County reports that they are up to 75 confirmed cases of COVID-19 Sunday, There are an additional 12 people under mandatory quarantine,  13 confirmed cases have been transferred back to the patients home county, 3 are hospitalized, 6 are isolated at home, 4 people are deceased and 49 have fully recovered.

State Police responded to a motor vehicle accident between a Pickup Truck & a tractor trailer in the town of Coventry Saturday night at about 9:50 PM, at the intersection of State Routes 206 and 235.  Police said that a passenger in the Pick-up,  46 year old Michelle Lieberman of Smithtown died from injuries sustained in the accident.  62 year old William DeRosa of Islip Terrace was the driver of the pickup, he sustained minor injuries & was transported to Wilson Hospital, along with 2 children who were also in the pick-up truck.  The driver of the tractor trailer 64 year old Robert Anderson of Lisle was not injured.  The investigation revealed that DeRosa was traveling on State Route 235 when he failed to stop at a stop sign and struck the tractor trailer traveling on State Route 206.  The investigation continues, alcohol does not appear to have been a factor in the crash.
