Otsego County Sheriff’s Department announced the arrest of 2 men on multiple charges after a joint investigation by his Office and the NYS DEC Police in the Town of Middlefield. 22 year old Dylan Kingsley of Rome & 23 year old Nathanial Smoot of Statesville, North Carolina were charged with illegally taking of a deer, possession of a loaded weapon in a vehicles, trespassing & hunting without a license among other charges, for allegedly hunting illegally on private land in the Town of Middlefield. Kingsley is accused of illegally shooting a deer while Smoot is accused of hunting without a license. Both were arraigned in the Town of Middlefield Court & face action at a later date.

Otsego County Sheriff’s department arrested 44 year old Bradley Ganio of Laurens, for 3rd degree Assault, Criminal Obstruction of Breathing & Harassment, following a recent domestic dispute. Ganio was arraigned and is scheduled to reappear in the Town of Laurens Court at a later date.

State Police arrested 21 year old Timothy Johns of Greene for Aggravated DWI with a reportable BAC of .21%. Troopers responded to a report of a one car accident on State Route 206 in the town of Greene, where Johns was accused of operating the vehicle when he struck a guide rail and became stuck, Johns was released to a sober 3rd party and will appear in the town of Greene Court on December 6th.

State Police arrested 25 year old Jeffrey Gurnee of Afton for Sexual Abuse following an investigation of an alleged sex abuse several years ago where Gurnee allegedly inappropriately touched a child under the age of 14, & a child under the age of 11 on another occasion. Gurnee was arraigned in the town of Afton Court; he was remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $5,000 cash bail or $10,000 bond. An order of protection was issued for each victim

Chenango County Sheriff’s Department arrested a 15 year old juvenile for Arson and Aggravated Cruelty to Animals, following an investigation into 3 fires over a 4 day period at 993 County Road 3 in the Town of Smithville earlier this month. 1 of the fires killed 25 goats & other livestock. The juvenile was arraigned in Chenango County Family Court and remanded to a juvenile facility.

State Police at Norwich arrested 22 year old Nathan Whitehill of New Berlin for DWI with a B.A.C of .12%, plus Unlawful Possession of Marijuana. Troopers observed the vehicle Whitehill was operating to be speeding and failing to keep right while on County Road 33 in the town of Norwich. A traffic stop was initiated and Whitehill was arrested, troopers also discovered a mason jar of marijuana in his possession. He was released on appearance tickets returnable to the town of Norwich Court on December 20th.

Scott and Marianne Ray of Norwich pleaded guilty to 2nd degree assault and endangering in the welfare of a child in Chenango County Court this week. The couple was accused of hitting a child with a hair brush & throwing a child into a wall this summer, they were each sentenced to 6 months in jail followed by 5 years’ probation.

The Capital Region Toys for Tots Foundation today announced its distribution plans for the 2018 holiday season, to deliver thousands of toys and winter coats to children in need throughout Upstate New York. The Toys for Tots Train schedule is December 1st, starting at 10:00 AM at the Binghamton Yard, it will then arrive in Bainbridge at 11:45 AM, then at 1:15 pm at the Gas Avenue Crossing, Oneonta, before heading for Cobleskill & Delanson. The train will continue on Sunday & finish its run in through the Capital region to Rouses Point.

As part of an initiative to be designated as a Clean Energy Community, the City of Oneonta has installed a ChargePoint Level 2 electric vehicle charging station in the Dietz Street parking lot. The Program is a NYSERDA initiative to reward communities for becoming more energy efficient. The charging station is equipped with two ports, allowing two vehicles to charge simultaneously. Initially, the City will not apply a fee for drivers to use this EV charging station. However, drivers must be a member of the ChargePoint network. 2 parking spaces, adjacent to the charging station in the Dietz Street Parking Lot, will be reserved for electric vehicles only.

State Police arrested 39 year old Dustin Hendricks of Milford for Criminal Contempt & Menacing, after Troopers were called to a dispute at a residence on State Route 28 in the town of Hartwick. Hendrick’s actions violated an order of protection, which was already in place, he was arraigned in the town of Hartwick Court where he was remanded to the Otsego County Jail in lieu of $5,000 cash bail or $10,000 property bond. His next court date is December 12th.

State Police arrested 29 year old Nicholas Reyes of Guilford for Aggravated Unlicensed Operation, Driving While Intoxicated & Refusal to Submit to a Breath Test. Troopers responded to a one car rollover on County Road 38 in the town of Guilford. An investigation revealed that the vehicle Reyes was operating veered over the double yellow lines then back into his lane before going off the roadway, striking a ditch and rolling over. Reyes was transported to Tri-Town Hospital then later Wilson Memorial Hospital for his injuries, he issued appearance tickets to the town of Guilford Court.

The State Department of Labor released preliminary local unemployment rates for October 2018. In October, the number of private sector jobs in the State was 8,218,800, the State’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased to 4.0% in October 2018. Locally, Chenango County had 3.4% Unemployment, Delaware County 3.7% & Otsego County 3.3%.

20-year-old Michael Roque of Long island was sentenced today in Broome County Court for the murder of Joao Souza on April 15 at Windham Hall on the Binghamton University campus. Roque pleaded guilty in September to 2nd degree murder, he was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

The first lawsuit has been filed in connection with the October 6th Limo Crash in Schoharie. Thomas and Donna Rivenburg, the parents of Amanda Rivenburg, have filed a lawsuit Prestige Limousine & Chauffer Service & others, for the use of the limousine that failed an inspection and was in violation for having 18 seats, which exceeded the limit of 10 seats for that vehicle, and that the driver did not have a proper license to operate the vehicle. The Rivenburgs are seeking monetary damages for gross negligence, pain and suffering, and wrongful death, 20 people died in the crash& the investigation is continuing.

43 year old David Woodward of Binghamton has been charged with 46 counts of unlawful surveillance, after being accused of videotaping people using his bathroom. The Broome County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant & seized electronic recording devices; Woodward was arraigned and was released pending future court action.

The Oneonta Department of Public Service announced that they are repairing a water main break on Chestnut Street until about 5:00 PM today, from Morgan to West End Avenue. Some local residents will be without water for a portion of the project. Governor Cuomo announced that temporary lane closures for road and bridge construction projects on New York State highways will be suspended beginning tomorrow morning at 6:00 AM through Monday, November 26th at 6:00 AM to accommodate travelers during the busy Thanksgiving Holiday Weekend. Some work may continue behind permanent concrete barriers or for emergency repairs. Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 37 Year old Shaun Leggio of Shirley for DWI and Driving with a BAC greater that 0.08%, & moving form a lane unsafely, following a 1 car rollover in the Town of Walton. Deputies determined that Leggio had been operating the vehicle in an intoxicated condition, with a blood alcohol content of 0.16%, he was released on appearance tickets and scheduled to appear before the Town of Walton at a later date.

After all the absentee ballots were accounted for, Anthony Brindisi has defeated one term incumbent republican Congresswoman Claudia Tenney in the 22nd district. State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli is urging New Yorkers to read the fine print on gift cards this holiday season for details about fees and expiration dates. DiNapoli said New Yorkers should use their gift cards within a year of purchase to avoid inactivity fees and register cards with the retailers. By registering their cards, owners can be identified which improves the opportunity of finding and claiming unused card balances that may be reported as unclaimed funds. Money from unused gift cards issued by New York businesses is turned over to the State Comptroller’s office as abandoned property after five years of dormancy. State residents can find out if the state owes them money, can find out at osc.state.ny.us.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 39 year old Michael Allen of Delhi with disseminating indecent material to minors and endangering the welfare of a child. Allen is accused of electronically sending pornographic material to a minor. Allen was arraigned at the Town of Delhi Court, where he was later remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Faculty in lieu of $5,000 cash bail. Allen is set to appear in the Town of Delhi Court at a later date for further court proceedings.

New York State’s unemployment rate fell to 4.0% in October 2018, matching its lowest level on record, according to preliminary figures released by the State Department of Labor. The number of unemployed New Yorkers fell in October, from 397,600 to 387,700, its lowest level since April 2001. There was also a 26,600 person increase in the state’s civilian labor force, the largest monthly gain recorded since March 2004. Current labor force data extend back to 1976.

WCDO NEWS THURSDAY 11-15-18

State Police will be participating in the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign again this year. Troopers will have extra patrols on the roads monitoring traffic and will be conducting DWI sobriety checkpoints. In addition to the DWI checkpoints and patrols, Troopers will also be watching for distracted or impaired drivers, vehicle occupants who are not properly buckled up, and drivers that are violating the Move Over Law. During the campaign, Troopers will be using both marked State Police vehicles and Concealed Identity Traffic Enforcement vehicles, which will allow Troopers to blend in with every day traffic.

Governor Cuomo today announced $22.9 million in grants to support 11 critical municipal water infrastructure projects in the Southern Tier. This funding represents $46.6 million in taxpayer savings and supports the creation of more than 3,200 jobs. These grants are funded through the state’s highly successful Water Infrastructure Improvement Act program. The Village of Hancock will get a grant for 2.4 Million dollars toward their $4 Million dollar drinking water project.

2 people were arrested after an alleged domestic dispute last month where a shotgun was displayed. Troopers responded to a residence on Hotchkiss Hill Road in Greene where 32 year old Brian Brick of Greene allegedly waved a shotgun during a dispute, he left in a truck with 37 year old Michael Halstead of Scranton, Pennsylvania. Halstead is accused of accepting the shotgun from Brick; he cannot legally possess weapons as a convicted felon. Halstead was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon; he was arraigned in the village of Greene Court and remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $5,000 cash bail or $10,000 bail bond. Brick turned himself in to State Police last week, he was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon & Menacing, and he was arraigned and remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $10,000 cash bail or $15,000 bail bond.

State Police arrested 34 year old Donald Shurock of Oxford for Resisting Arrest and 2 counts of Criminal Mischief, Troopers were dispatched to a domestic dispute on Lucas Lane in the town of Oxford, where Shurock damaged property and also took the victim’s phone while the victim attempted to call for help the previous day. After an investigation, Shurock Jr. was arrested. He was arraigned in the town of Oxford Court where he was remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $2,500 cash bail or $10,000 bail bond. An order of protection was issued by the judge.

State Police arrested 53 year old Michael Kane of Bainbridge for DWI, after a trooper monitoring traffic on State Highway 7 in the town of Unadilla observed the vehicle that Kane was operating to have an equipment violation. After a traffic stop was initiated, Kane was arrested and released on appearance tickets returnable to the town of Unadilla Court on November 19th.

Delaware County Sheriff Deputies’ responded to a physical domestic dispute on Dry Brook Rd in the Town of Tompkins in August, upon completion of the investigation 65 year old Gerald Brundege of Tompkins was arrested for Harassment, 53 year old Mary Brundege of North Branch, NY was arrested for Harassment, she was released on a Criminal Summons. 64 year old Erpherd Brundege was arrested on an Arrest Warrant issued by the Town of Tompkins Court for Harassment, Reckless Endangerment & Assault; he was arraigned in the Village of Walton Court and released on his own recognizances. All parties are to appear in the Town of Tompkins Court at a later date to answer the said charges.

State Police arrested 43 year old Arzou Hami of Coventry for Menacing a Police Officer, Menacing, Criminal Possession of a Weapon and Resisting Arrest. A trooper was dispatched to a residence on State Route 235 in the town of Coventry that Hami was allegedly breaking property, allegedly threatened the victim with a Barbecue skewer. When the trooper entered the residence, Hami was sitting on the floor; she displayed a knife and threatened the trooper several times. Hami was tased and was taken into custody. She was arraigned in the town of Afton Court where she was remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $10,000 cash bail or $20,000 bail bond. She will return to Afton Court on November 14th.

The State Department of Health announced that it has issued the 2nd 2-year report on the Medical Use of Marijuana Under the Compassionate Care Act. The report recommends changes to increase patient access, which includes allowing practitioners to certify patients who previously did not qualify for medical marijuana; permitting all practitioners who can prescribe controlled substances to people to become registered providers; and initiating a pilot study to assess the cost-benefits of health insurance coverage. More than 150 new Troopers were honored this morning for their perseverance and dedication in completing the 207th session of the Basic School of the State Police Academy during graduation exercises in Albany, New York. David Schulte of Oneonta was one of today’s graduates:

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 36-year-old Jarred Robinson of Walton, for disorderly conduct, trespass, obstructing government administration and resisting arrest following a report of a male subject causing fights and refusing to leave the Feather and Stone Bar in the Village of Walton. Robinson physically resisted Deputies during arrest, he was arraigned at Hamden Town Court and was remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $400 bail or $1000 bond pending future court action.

Unadilla Valley Central School District confirms that they went into a lock-down late Tuesday morning after an alleged threat reported in the Otselic Valley School District. Unadilla Valley went on a lock-down after 2 students reported an audio recording of a threatened act of violence against a school, was allegedly made by a Unadilla Valley student. Chenango County sheriff’s Deputies responded, the student who made the threat was located and a search of that student’s locker revealed no weapons or contraband & the lockdown was lifted about 30 minutes later. The investigation is continuing.

The Miller family of Smithville has gone through 3 fires on the property in a 4 day period at 993 County Road 3 in Smithville. Chenango County officials said that the 1st fire was reported Saturday afternoon in the garage, the 2nd fire occurred 7 hours later in a barn, the 3rd fire was reported Tuesday in the family’s attic. All 3 Miller fires are under investigation.

36 year old James Giacalone of Glen Aubrey faces sentencing in Broome County Court today. Giacalone pleaded guilty to attempted aggravated assault against a police officer in a plea deal in September, Giacalone was accused of leading police on a chase through Binghamton, trying to run down a Trooper with his vehicle, the trooper then shot Giacalone in the face. Giacalone was sentenced to the maximum penalty of 12 years in prison today.

A Boil Water order has been lifted in the Village of Greene, following a water main break on Saturday on North Chenango Street. The Water Main Break & subsequent advisory forced the cancellation of classes for the Greene Central School District Tuesday, classes were back in session today.

The City of Oneonta is set to unveil the draft vision, goals and recommendations for the Oneonta Comprehensive Plan Update at an open house today from 3:00 pm to 7:30 pm, at the Oneonta High School cafeteria. The event will build on feedback and information gathered during the first open house held in January. Governor Cuomo today announced more than $262.2 million in enhanced funding has been awarded to municipal governments to accelerate the renewal and modernization of local bridges and culverts. As part of the State’s BRIDGE NY initiative, these awards will fund 165 individual projects in 95 communities across the State. In the Southern Tier, 27 Projects are scheduled, totaling $32.94 Million dollars.

After much anticipation over the last few months, Amazon announced today that they have chosen New York and Northern Virginia to split the Internet giant’s 2nd headquarters. Amazon announced it has chosen New York’s Long Island City and Arlington Virginia, both locations will receive a $2.5 billion investment from Amazon, and each will have more than 25,000 workers over time. Hiring is expected to begin next year. The New Amazon Campus represents the largest Economic Development Project in New York State History, beating out 238 municipalities for the Amazon project.

The American Red Cross announced that they are facing a severe blood shortage and urgently needs blood and platelet donors to give now to avoid delays in lifesaving medical care for patients. Volunteer blood drive hosts are also critically needed to prevent the shortage from worsening this winter. During September and October, the Red Cross collected over 21,000 fewer blood and platelet donations than what hospitals needed. Blood donors of all blood types, especially type O, are urged to make an appointment to donate at RedCrossBlood.org or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS. Several Blood Drives will be held across the region in the coming days & weeks, after fewer blood drives in September and October coupled with hurricanes Michael and Florence, caused thousands of blood and platelet donations to go uncollected.

Binghamton University officials announced that senior Albert Cruz of the Bronx was found collapsed in his suite in a dorm on the Vestal campus on Sunday. Cruz died shortly afterward at an area hospital, there was “no indication of foul play” and university police are awaiting reports from a medical examiner.

The Greene Central School District is closed today. Officials said that the cause of today’s closing is due to the water situation in the Village.
