Binghamton police are investigating the shooting of 40 year old Grady Hunter on Sunday, Hunter was hospitalized with life threatening injuries, Police reported that Hunter was sitting in his car outside a Deli at 121 Susquehanna Street at around 12:00 Noon Sunday. A suspect has been taken into custody today, anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call detectives at 772-7080.

5 people died & 1 was critically injured in a house fire on State Route 145 in East Durham early Monday Morning. Nicholas and Mary Mammano, & their 3 grandchildren died, John Mammano was taken to an area hospital for treatment of injuries. The cause of the fire was under investigation, and Autopsies have been ordered to determine the cause of death.

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration announced that the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York entered a consent decree of permanent injunction against Vulto Creamery or Walton. The defendants cannot prepare, process, manufacture, pack and/or hold FDA-regulated food products until they can ensure that Listeria is not present in their facility and their food. Vulto Creameries products were linked to a multi-state outbreak of Listeria in their cheese products, 2 people died & 8 were hospitalized after consuming the products contaminated by Listeria.

Governor Cuomo announced more than 60 new farms & businesses have received research permits under the State’s Industrial Hemp Agricultural Research Pilot program, many of those are located in the Southern Tier. Delaware County Public Health is holding a “Medical Countermeasures” drill today to practice and test the ability to dispense large amounts of medicine in the event of a public health threat such as a disease outbreak or bioterrorism threat to the community. Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro is expected to reverse course & will launch his campaign for governor after all. Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 34 year old Gary Scofield of the Walton for Criminal Obstruction of Breathing, & Endangering the Welfare of a Child, following an investigation of a domestic incident in Walton. Scofield allegedly applied pressure to the neck of another person during the domestic incident, in the presence of a child less than the age of 17. Scofield was arraigned & was remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $2000 cash bail or $4000 in bond.

The trial of Jeremy Coates began today in Chenango County Court, Coates is accused of murdering disabled Veteran David Green, by blunt force trauma to the head, in green’s Oxford home in September 2016. Melissa Crispell pleaded guilty last May to 1st degree robbery for her involvement in the crime.

Governor Cuomo announced the passage of the bill Saturday to prevent gun violence. According to the law, New York citizens convicted of domestic abuse must turn in their rifles, shotguns, and other firearms. The original law only barred abusers from owning pistols or revolvers. Statistics show that perpetrators of domestic violence accounted for about 54% of mass shootings between 2009 and 2016.

State Police, Johnson City Police & the Broome County District Attorney’s Office are investigating the fatal shooting of 46 year old Erika Smith Cunningham of Binghamton, and the injuring of 2 other people, at 92 Crocker Avenue in Johnson City around 6:30 Sunday morning. A Public Scoping Session for the preparation of an environmental impact statement for the Oneonta Rail Yards Project will be conducted on Wednesday at 6:30 pm at Riverside Elementary School in Oneonta, and on Thursday at 6:30 PM at Greater Plains Elementary School. 25 year old Joshua Underwood pleaded guilty to 1st-degree manslaughter for the death of Mark Morrison; he was sentenced to 20 years in prison in Otsego County Court on Friday. Underwood called 911 on January 1st 2017 and reported that he had killed Morrison in his Main Street Oneonta apartment; he also tried to set fire to the apartment unsuccessfully to cover up the murder.

23 year old Kevin Perry of Laurens is facing 2 counts of 1st-degree murder and 2 counts of 2nd-degree murder for the December 12th shooting death of his parents in their Laurens Trailer. Perry was scheduled to go before a judge for a pre-trial conference on Friday, he was presented with a plea deal in exchange for a 25-year prison sentence, Perry is expected to announce his decision on the plea offer at a later date.

Julian Vancourt-Weis faces charges of attempted murder, assault and criminal possession of a weapon, in connection with an attack on his girlfriend in her Oneonta Apartment December 8th, on Friday he was offered a plea deal in Otsego County Court. Prosecutors offered him a 15 year sentence in exchange for pleading guilty to assault; a decision is expected at a later date.

WCDO NEWS FRIDAY 3-30-18

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an accident involving a person being run over by a tandem tractor trailer rig while at the loading dock area of The Maines Food and Paper Distribution Center in Conklin. At about 2:00 AM, the Sheriff’s Office was contacted regarding an unresponsive person being located on the ground near the loading docks, who was deceased. The investigation indicates that the driver of a tractor trailer parked at the loading dock was in between his tractor trailer and a tandem tractor trailer rig parked in the yard when, he was struck and killed by the by the other vehicle as it pulled away from the loading dock area. The incident appears to have been accidental and no criminal charges are anticipated. The name of the deceased is not being released at this time. The investigation is continuing & A post mortem examination is being performed today.

Budget negotiations have stalled in Albany, as Governor Cuomo & Legislative leaders hoped to have the budget finished yesterday, prior to the Easter weekend & the April 1st deadline. Among the sticking points, State Senate Leader John Flanagan announced that bail reform will not be included in the budget; Governor Cuomo announced that the sexual harassment policy is still being hashed out & the Child Victims Act may be chopped out of the budget plan. Governor Cuomo told reports that they may pass budget extenders if there is no final deal in the next 24 to 48 hours.

State Police arrested 27 year old Megan Rogers of Rochester for felony Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a motor vehicle & Criminal Impersonation, after Troopers observed Rogers speeding on State Highway 26 in the town of Triangle. Rogers is accused of lying about her identity to avoid arrest, driving without a valid driver’s license after 10 suspensions. Rogers was arraigned in the town of Triangle Court & was remanded to the Broome County Jail with no bail.

The Harpursville Central School District announced that they have been chosen to create an egg design for the annual White House Easter Egg Roll, which is scheduled for Monday morning on the South Lawn of the White House. Harpursville High School juniors Annamarie Goosley and Tori Johnson worked with their teacher Ann McDonald to create the design. Delaware County Sheriff Deputy’s arrested 22 year old Cecil Garcia of Plymouth, Pennsylvania and 22 year old Miguel Cordoba of Roselle, New Jersey for Unlawful Possession of Marihuana after a traffic stop for failure to dim headlights on State Highway 10 in the Town of Hamden. Garcia was also arrested for Aggravated Unlicensed Operation after learning that his privileges in the state of New York were revoked. Cordoba and Garcia are to appear in the Town of Hamden Court at a later date.

State Police responded to a report of an assault Friday in the Town of Lisle, where the victim suffered a serious injury. Troopers said that the alleged assailant is 26 year old Thomas Sessions of the Whitney Point. Sessions is described to as 6 feet tall, approximately 240 pounds with blonde hair and blue eyes; he was left the scene in a white pick-up truck with oversized tires and a loud muffler. State Police stopped a woman who disrupted a press conference at a State Police Substation at the Capitol in Albany yesterday with Governor Cuomo. The woman shouted obscenities & threw papers at the Governor; she was whisked away by troopers, while the Governor finished talking with reporters. State Senator Jim Seward is calling on the state to investigate the impact Lyme and tick-borne diseases may have on mental health. The State Senate unanimously passed legislation that would require the state to study the link between infectious diseases, blood-borne pathogens and mental illnesses. The State Department of Environmental Conservation announced that trout fishing season opens Sunday. The sport fishing industry brought in an estimated $1.8 billion in economic activity, the DEC will stock 2.26 million catchable-size trout in 315 lakes and ponds and roughly 2,845 miles of streams across the state. Anyone 16 years of age and older must have a current State fishing license, more information is available at dec.ny.gov/permits.

The Delaware County Board of Supervisors voted down a resolution to purchase the McFarland farm land property in Delhi for the Department of Public Works facility. The board is expected to look into another option for a DPW facility in Hamden.

State Police arrested 27 year old Charles Walsh of Sidney, for Criminal Trespass, Harassment and Unlawful Possession of Marihuana. Troopers were dispatched to a residence in Deposit for a physical dispute Monday; Walsh fled the scene, but was apprehended by State Police Tuesday in Sidney. Walsh was arraigned in the village of Deposit and was remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $1,000 cash bail or $2,000 bond. He is scheduled to return to the village of Deposit Court on April 10th.

Oneonta Police arrested 33 year old John Gipson of Utica for criminal possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell, among other charges. Gipson was picked up on Main Street in Oneonta Friday, Police seized about 5.6 Grams of Crack Cocaine at the time of the arrest, Gipson faces court action shortly.

35 year old Steven Knauff of Oneonta faces numerous charges including criminal contempt, menacing, and criminal mischief & resisting arrest, for allegedly brandishing a kitchen knife. Oneonta police used a Taser to subdue Knauff following the report of a domestic dispute on March 8th. Knauff was arraigned & was sent to the Otsego County Jail Tuesday.

Oneonta Mayor Gary Herzig announced that the city has chosen Trampoline Advertising and Design Co. of Glens Falls to develop and implement Oneonta’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative branding, marketing, downtown directory and welcome signage programs. Oneonta was awarded $570,000 for the programs as part of the state’s DRI award of $10 million.

34 year old Tristan Reid of Scranton Pennsylvania was charged with reckless endangerment, reckless driving, unlicensed operator, leaving the scene of a property damage accident, & several other related charges, following an accident on Main Street last Friday evening. Reid is accused of driving into on-coming traffic, he went up a curb onto a sidewalk and lawn, damaged a street sign, & drove into the side of 365 Main Street. Reid was sent to Otsego County jail on $7,500 cash bail or $15,000 bond pending future court action.

The Otsego County Sheriff’s department announced that Margaret Thayer was found deceased near her Property in the town of Otsego this morning. Thayer was reported missing back on march 6th, Deep snow drifts had prevented deputies from reaching some of her property behind her residence, an autopsy may be performed, Sheriff Richard Devlin reported that there was no trauma to the body and foul play is not suspected, the investigation is continuing.

Laraby was arraigned in the town of Exeter and remanded to the Otsego County Jail on $1,000 cash bail or $2,000 bond.

Governor Cuomo announced that more than $9.7 million has been awarded to 12 Southern Tier municipalities through Round 5 of the Restore New York Communities Initiative. Southern Tier Projects include the demolition of the former Endicott K-Mart, to redevelop that site, in the Town of Sherburne – $1,000,000 will be used for the restoration of the Sherburne Inn, in Johnson City, $942,300 will be used for the Remediation and rehabilitation of 19 Avenue B for the Southern Tier Agricultural Foundry Development & in Binghamton, $60,000 will be used to demolish blighted properties & turn the areas into a greenspace & to redevelop the site for an affordable housing development

Democratic Congressional candidate Anthony Brindisi announced that he will hold a series of town halls in the 22nd Congressional district. 32 year old Jillian Hren of Walton arrested Sunday by State Troopers for operating a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs and criminal possession of a controlled substance, after Troopers were called to the Mirabito gas station on Main Street in the village of Franklin, where they discovered Hren asleep in her vehicle with the engine running. Hren was released with appearance tickets for the Village of Franklin Court on April 10.

Governor Cuomo announced the application for the Excelsior Scholarship for new applicants in the 2018-19 academic year is now open. SUNY students whose families make up to $110,000 annually can now apply for tuition-free college at hesc.ny.gov/excelsior. The State Labor Department released the unemployment rates for the state’s counties today. Locally, Chenango County’s rate was up to 7.3%, Delaware County was at 7.4% & Otsego County had 6.6 % unemployment. Statewide, the rate was at 5.1%.

Officials with SFCU announced today that they will not hold their annual “Hometown Day Parade” again this June, due to the Main Street Revitalization project, and the inability to find a suitable alternative route. Plans call for the parade to be brought back in June of 2019, with the official announcement expected in the Spring of 2019.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 53 year old William Davis of Sayreville, New Jersey on an arrest warrant issued by the Town of Franklin Court, for Criminal Contempt. Davis is accused of violating an Order of Protection last November. Davis was released on his own recognizance and is set to return to the Town of Franklin Court at a later date to answer the charges.

The State Senate passed legislation that would strengthen Kendra’s Law, by improving the quality of care provided to the mentally ill, and by making Kendra’s Law permanent. Kendra’s Law was first enacted in 1999 following the death of 32-year-old Kendra Webdale, who was shoved in front of a New York City subway train by a man with untreated schizophrenia. The bill will be sent to the Assembly.

State Police arrested 35 year old Thomas Taranto of South New Berlin for Operating a Motor Vehicle While Impaired by Drugs. Taranto was observed by troopers driving erratically on State Route 23 in Morris. Taranto was arraigned and was remanded to the Otsego County Jail on $1,000 cash or $2,000 bond.

Legislative Leaders in Albany announced that they expect to wrap up work on the state budget on Thursday March 29th. Local Assemblyman Cliff Crouch said that again this year, Governor Cuomo has added some policy issues into the budget, which he feels should be dealt with apart from the budget:

State Police arrested 2 Springbrook employees who allegedly took inappropriate Snapchat videos of residents without their knowledge. Police arrested 20 year old Sharon McDowall of Oneonta & 22 year old Julianne Carbone of Oneonta for Endangering the Welfare of an Incompetent or Physically Disabled Person & Unlawful Surveillance, McDowall was arraigned and remanded to the Otsego County Jail on $5,000 cash or $10,000 bond, Carbone was issued appearance tickets and is scheduled to be in town of Oneonta Court Tuesday.

While tens of thousands march to end gun violence in Washington D.C. Saturday, many residents came out for smaller scale marches in Oneonta & Binghamton on Saturday. The Marches started after survivors of the Parkland Florida School mass shooting organized the march on Washington in an effort to change gun laws across the country.

The State Department of Civil Service today announced the availability of approximately 500 new student internships for the upcoming Summer 2018 Session throughout New York State government and encouraged students to apply prior to the April 20, 2018 application deadline. Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 56 year old Patrick Macdonald of Walton, New York on charges of Driving While Intoxicated, Aggravated DWI with a blood alcohol content of .18 or higher, and Obstructing Governmental Administration, Unlawfully Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle, and Reckless Driving, as well as numerous vehicle and traffic violations. This arrest was a result of a police pursuit beginning in the Town of Walton and concluding in the Town of Franklin. Macdonald was arraigned in the Town of Hamden Court & was remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $2,500 cash bail or $5,000 secured bond. Sheriff’s Deputies were assisted by the Village of Walton Police Department.

USA Today reports today that former NFL player turned Baseball player Tim Tebow, will start this spring season with the Binghamton Rumble Ponies. The New York Mets are still assigning players to various levels this week, as the opening day of the Major League baseball season is this Thursday.

State Police executed a search warrant in the town of Unadilla, they arrested 28 year old Michael Schermerhorn, 32 year old Heather Prince, 40 year old Eric Hoyt & 37 year old Barbara Meyers, all of Unadilla, on a variety of charges, including illegal manufacture of Methamphetamine. State Police seized methamphetamine oil, 2 grams of meth, a sawed off shotgun, a digital scale and components used to make methamphetamine. All 4 were arraigned in the town of Otego Court & were remanded to the Otsego County Jail on $15,000 cash bail or $30,000 bond pending court action on March 29th.

Broome County Sheriff’s department responded Friday to a 4 car accident in the Town of Union. 30 year old Rebecca Crane of Sayre, Pennsylvania hit vehicles waiting at a stop light, she admitted to speeding as her husband 33 year old Gary Crane was in the car & wasn’t breathing due to a heroin overdose, he was taken to Wilson Hospital where he recovered. Rebecca Crane was charged with Driving While Intoxicated with child in vehicle, Driving While Ability Impaired-Drugs, Criminal Possession of Controlled Substance, Criminally Possessing a Hypodermic Instrument, Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Crane was arraigned & is being held without bail, more charges are expected.

Norwich Police arrested 49 year old Rebecca Evans for grand larceny and forgery, for allegedly stealing property worth more than $3,000 and about $7,600 in cash from the Norwich Purple Tornado Community Team. The thefts began in July 2016, while Evans served as treasurer; She was released on her own recognizance and ordered back in Norwich City Court at a later date.

21-year-old Jabari Ashe was found guilty today in Broome County Court, for the April 2017 murder of Tyquan Gumbs according to the Broome County District Attorney’s Office says the jury found Jabari Ashe guilty of murder in Broome County Court on Friday. Ashe was found guilty of the fatal shooting of Gumbs, whose body was found behind a residence on Fayette Street in Binghamton last year.

More than 5,750 consumers have received rebates to buy electric cars in New York since the State’s Drive Clean Rebate was launched a year ago. The Program provides residents with a rebate of up to $2,000 for the purchase or lease of a new electric car from participating dealers. Most of the consumers were on Long Island, or in Mid-Hudson valley region, only 217 rebates or 3.8% came from the Central New York region. More than 10,000 electric cars were sold in New York in 2017, a 67% increase over 2016.

The State Department of Health announced that for the 4th consecutive week, the number of laboratory confirmed influenza cases has decreased. Last week 3,005 laboratory confirmed influenza cases were reported, the number of weekly hospitalizations decreased for the 6th consecutive week, with 493 New Yorkers hospitalized. Since December, 20,612 people have been hospitalized with influenza, there have been 5 pediatric influenza-associated deaths this flu season.

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation will host their head-shaving event in Norwich Saturday, where 3 dozen volunteers will shave their heads to raise money for lifesaving childhood cancer research. The Norwich St. Baldrick’s event starts at 6 pm at the American Legion Post 189 Banquet Hall, 29 Sheldon Street, Norwich. The event is free and open to the public.
