NYSEG officials announced that they are monitoring weather forecasts due to today’s high wind gusts forecast for the region. NYSEG’s storm readiness teams have prepared crews and equipment to ensure that resources are in place to restore any downed power lines and power interruptions. Stay away from downed power lines even lines that appear dead can be deadly. NYSEG customers should call 1-800-572-1131 to report downed power lines or other hazardous situations.

Local representatives appeared at the home of Olga Ehret in Johnson City this morning, where Olga discussed the savings on her heating bills after having a free survey performed on her home, through the Home Performance with Energy Star Program. Governor Cuomo, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and Members of the New York Congressional Delegation today announced over $5 million in federal Homeland Security grant funding for local governments across the state to bolster counter terrorism initiatives and strengthen public safety efforts. Funding will support local law enforcement tactical teams, technical search and rescue operations, and explosive detection canine units, while also safeguarding critical infrastructure across New York.

State Senator Jim Seward will be at the I-88 Wells Bridge rest stop between exits 12 and 11 Thursday afternoon. Senator Seward will officially reopen the fully rehabilitated I-88 rest stop at 1:00 PM; the stop was closed due to state budget cuts in 2010.

The Delaware County Department of Economic Development announced the acceptance of applications under the County’s 3rd-year Agricultural Microenterprise Program, which will make matching grants available up to $30,000 to eligible ag-based businesses. Governor Cuomo today announced a new electric vehicle campaign that includes the installation of charging stations, incentives for employers to encourage employees to drive electric vehicles and extensive public education and outreach. Work on the projects will start immediately and will include the installation of 450 charging stations across the state, 150 will be located at workplaces across the upstate region.

The Binghamton Court Building was evacuated this morning following a bomb threat. Police & their Canine units were called in shortly after the threat was called in at about 9:00 AM, everyone was allowed back in at about 10:00 AM. The investigation into the source of the bomb threat is continuing.

A public hearing will be held in Oneonta on March 14th regarding the Town of Oneonta possibly starting their own Volunteer fire department to replace a paid agreement with the City of Oneonta Fire Department. State Police arrested 60 year old Brian Lewis of Gilbertsville for DWI and other traffic violations, after troopers responded to a 1 vehicle rollover crash on Copes Corners Road in the Town of Butternuts. Trropers accuse Lewis of driving while intoxicated when he crashed his vehicle causing it to rollover. His passenger received a hand laceration, and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Lewis refused to submit to a breath test to determine his blood alcohol content. He was released after arraignment at the Town of Butternuts Court.

Victims of child sexual abuse in New York say that the political power of the Catholic Church & other institutions is preventing lawmakers from passing a law that would relax one of the nation’s tightest statutes of limitations on filing criminal charges & Lawsuits. One bill would create a 1-year window for lawsuits otherwise barred by the current statutes; opponents claim that provision would cause catastrophic financial harm for institutions that work with children. Governor Cuomo said that he supports the idea of making it easier for child sexual abuse victims to sue.

3 state run ski resorts are pledging to generate 100% of their energy from renewable resources by 2030. Cuomo is seeking to have the state generate half of its energy form renewable resources like wind & solar by 2030, about 28 million dollars is earmarked for upgrades at Belleayre, Gore & Whiteface in the near future.

Health care providers are urging lawmakers this week for increased support for community-based services to help uninsured patients. More than 900 community health care supporters were in Albany Monday lobbying for Lawmakers to designate $20 million dollars for clinics that serve about 2 million uninsured New Yorkers in high poverty areas annually.

Governor Cuomo last week pinned the blame on the state’s high property taxes on the excessive levels of local Governments and is seeking more cooperation & consolidation among municipalities. Last Wednesday, members of the Oneonta Police Department Patrol Division conducted a traffic stop which resulted in the arrest of a passenger in the vehicle. 48 year old Vickie Tolbert of Oneonta was charged with Criminal Contempt & criminal Possession of a controlled substance. Police seized 20 bags of Heroin & 1 gram of Cocaine. Tolbert was held at the city of Oneonta Police Department pending arraignment in the city of Oneonta Court.

New York State Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs announced that a former employee of Springbrook in Sidney was arrested on charges that she drove an agency vehicle erratically while texting on her phone, jeopardizing the safety of a passenger. 30 year old Christi Swartwout of Sidney is charged with Endangering the Welfare of an Incompetent Person, following an August 2016 incident in which Swartwout was transporting an individual with developmental disabilities when she was observed driving erratically, nearly colliding with other cars. Swartwout was terminated from her position as a Health Care Assistant, she was arraigned in Oneonta City Court and was released on her own recognizance. She is scheduled to reappear in court on March 21.

A man whose name was synonymous with the General Clinton Canoe Regatta has died at the age of 78. Dick Davies died on Saturday; he was a 1970 Regatta champion, served for many years on the Regatta Committee and was instrumental in the development of the Regatta Museum & Hall of Fame. Delaware County Sheriff Deputies arrested 35 year old Brian Bennett of Stamford, on an arrest warrant issued by Stamford Town Court for criminal mischief. The arrest is follows an investigation into an assault in a parking lot on January 19th, where Bennett allegedly attempted to assault Stamford Firemen on the scene & damaged the windshield of a Stamford Fireman’s personal vehicle, causing damage of more than $250 dollars. Bennet was remanded back to the Delaware County Jail on $10,000 cash bail.

US Senator Chuck Schumer wants the National Transportation Safety Board to conduct an investigation of small plane crashes, following 2 more crashes last month and at 18 crashes in New York State last year. Schumer cited a February 19th crash of a single-engine plane that took off from Long Island and crashed into a neighborhood in Bayonne, New Jersey, as well as a February 26th crash of a plane being used for practice at another Long Island airport, where 2 people were killed.

Over the next 2 months, the State Liquor Authority Beverage Control Investigators, working with underage minor decoys, will conduct statewide sweeps at more than 500 locations holding liquor licenses, including bars, restaurants, liquor stores and grocery stores. State investigators from the Department of Motor Vehicles will join State Liqour Authority during some of these enforcement operations; in addition to conducting their own fake ID enforcement sweeps at locations across New York. The combined enforcement effort begins today and runs through April.

State Police arrested 36-year-old Danielle Fuger of Roscoe for the felony Grand Larceny. Troopers were advised of a theft in December in the Town of Colchester, the investigation determined that while being allowed to stay at this home for a week, Fuger allegedly stole about $1,200 cash from the owner and then left. Fuger was located in the Sullivan County Jail where she was being held on an unrelated charge, she was arraigned in the Town of Colchester Court and was then sent back to the Sullivan County Jail.

Outdoor enthusiasts and activists from across New York have gathered in Albany this week to urge state lawmakers to back plans for a 750-mile trail system. The proposal would include a plan to complete and connect two greenway trails crisscrossing the state from Manhattan to Canada and from Albany to Buffalo, resulting in a 750-mile paved biking and hiking route that could be marketed as a national tourist destination. The plan could cost $53 million, and would need to be approved by the Legislature.

Governor Cuomo today announced the kick-off of New York State Women’s Suffrage 100th Anniversary Commemoration Commission, which will be responsible for a series of statewide programs that celebrate women’s suffrage in New York State. The 14-member commission will work to promote the anniversary of women’s suffrage between 2017, marking 100 years from when women won the right to vote in New York State and 2020; a century after the 19th Amendment was ratified. New York State is home to the first-ever Women’s Rights Convention, held in Seneca Falls, in 1848 and 69 years later, women in New York State won the right to vote.


Lawmakers held a press conference Wednesday to repeal the SAFE Act in the upstate counties, but leave it intact in New York City’s 5 boroughs. State Senator Jim Seward co-sponsors the bill:

The legislation would reverse elements of the SAFE Act including gun licensing recertification requirements, storage mandates, firearm seizures and registries, and information collected on gun owners. The bill was introduced in January.

State Police arrested 41 year old Kent Wheeler of Windsor, for 3rd degree Assault, they arrested girlfriend 35 year old Karissa Tennant for Criminal Mischief, after troopers responded to a February 22nd report of a road rage on Place Road in the Town of Windsor. Troopers reported that just after a road rage incident with another motorist, Wheeler allegedly punched the other motorist in the face several times causing an injury, while Tennant had kicked the other vehicle, causing over $250 worth of damage. The victim was treated at a local hospital for a laceration and released. Wheeler and Tennant were issued tickets returnable to the Town of Windsor Court on March 7th.

A 16 Year old was killed in a structure fire at 457 State Highway 8 in Mount Upton early this morning. Firefighters from Mt. Upton Fire Department, Sidney, Bainbridge, Guilford, & South New Berlin responded, Chenango County Sheriff’s Department reported that the 16 year old youth was unable to escape the fire, the name of the deceased is being withheld pending family notification. The cause of the fire appears to be a wood stove which was the main home heating source. The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Chenango County Bureau of Fire Investigation Team & State Police.

State Police at Troop C, announced that they are searching for Willie Thompson of the Binghamton area, he is wanted for criminal contempt. Thompson was arrested in 2013, after violating an order of protection, & after missing court dates; the Town of Barker Court issued a bench warrant for his arrest. Police said that Thompson has many tattoos including stars, a crown and the words “ADONIS” and “LATHISA”. The State Department of Health announced today that it is launching a pilot program that will allow residents that are served by either a private well or public water system an opportunity to have their drinking water tested for lead free of charge. Delaware County Sheriff Deputies arrested 21-year-old Korey Bush of Delhi for 2 counts of Petty Larceny and 1 count of Criminal possession of a controlled substance. Bush is accused of stealing prescription medication & cash in the Town of Meredith. Bush was arranged in the Town of Meredith Court and remanded to the Delaware County correctional facility in lieu of $500.00 cash bail. Bush is to reappear in the Town of Meredith Court at a later date to answer the said charges.

Governor Cuomo announced $38.8 million in New NY Broadband Program Round II grants have been awarded to 17 projects in the Southern Tier. These awards will provide 12,835 homes and businesses with access to high-speed broadband for the first time, and leverage $11.7 million in private matching funds; bringing the total public-private investment in the Southern Tier to $50.5 million in Round II.

Governor Cuomo announced that he is advancing new legislation to end child marriage by raising the age of consent to marry from 14 to 18-years-old in New York. The legislation strengthens protections for minors by preventing child marriage and holding violators accountable. Under the new measures, those who issue a marriage license to anyone under 18-years-old without parental and judicial written consent will be charged with a misdemeanor.

New York State has new rules in effect today that will require financial institutions to create & maintain cyber-security programs in order to prevent illegal access to sensitive personal records of their customers from hackers. Most banks already have programs in effect, but the new rule makes in mandatory instead of optional.

The Hillcrest Fire Department reported that it was 74-year-old Roberta Bush who died in a trailer fire Sunday night. The fire was reported at around 8:30 PM Sunday at 417 West Service Road, Bush was found in the back portion of the trailer after fire fighters extinguished the blaze.

State police reported that they are investigating the death of Greene County Sheriff’s Deputy say a sheriff’s deputy Kevin Haverly on State Route 23 in the town of Ashland. The accident occurred shortly before 6 a.m. This morning, where Deputy Haverly’s patrol vehicle left the roadway and hit a utility pole, He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Governor Cuomo was one of 6 governors who did not attend a governors meeting with President Trump this week, where the President told the governors that federal aid to the states for Medicaid would be cut. Cuomo had a private meeting with trump in New York City on January 18th.

Talks are continuing in Albany among lawmakers to Expand access to ridesharing services like Lyft & Uber into the upstate counties. A number of ridesharing companies have successfully operated in New York City over the last several years; a bill is expected to make it to Governor Cuomo’s desk this year.

Governor Cuomo has proposed the Clean Water Infrastructure Act of 2017, to invest a record $2 billion in critical water infrastructure across New York State. The bill follows reports of tainted water from industrial pollutants in Flint Michigan, and Hoosick Falls New York last year.

New York State is expanding it’s testing of foods & Beverages in an effort to prevent food borne illnesses. The state announced that over 67,000 samples were tested last year, which was up 10% from 2015. State testing resulting in over 300 recalls last year.

A new Siena College poll has Governor Cuomo at his highest favorability ratings in 2 years. Today’s Poll has 60% of respondents viewing Cuomo favorably, compared to 34% who have an unfavorable view. Today’s poll also has President Donald Trump with 68% unfavorable and only 29% favorable.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded a fatal, 2 car head on collision on Bear Spring Mountain in the Town of Walton Saturday. Sheriff’s Deputies and the State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit revealed that 43 year old Andrew Thompson of Tenafly, New Jersey, was driving on State Route 206 when a vehicle driven by 41 year old Joel Alves of Hopewell Junction crossed the center lines & collided head on with Thompson’s vehicle. Thompson was pronounced dead at the scene, his wife 43-year-old Wendy Hoeben, and their 6-year-old son were transported to Delaware Valley Hospital in Walton, Hoeben was treated & released, and the child was transferred to Westchester Medical Center. Alves was also transported to Delaware Valley Hospital where he was also treated and released. Alves was driving with a suspended driver’s license and a suspended vehicle registration, the investigation is continuing & charges are anticipated.

Governor Cuomo today announced more than $36.6 million in savings for farmers across the state through the first 3 years of the Agricultural Assessment Cap. The Cap became law in 2013, preventing agricultural assessments from being increased by more than 2% annually. Southern Tier farmers are expected to save 3.2 million dollars with the cap in place this year.

An elderly woman died during a fire that engulfed her mobile at 417 West Service Road in Hillcrest Sunday night. Hillcrest Fire Department reported that 1 person was found on the backside of the trailer. Fire Fighters found the trailer fully engulfed in flames at around 8:30 PM, Fire officials said the cause of the fire is still under investigation, the name of the deceased has not yet been announced.

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and State Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia today reminded school districts of their duty to comply with existing state and federal laws that ensure the rights of immigrant children to attend New York’s public schools without fear of reprisal. The guidance provides districts with information pertaining to their duties under the law, regarding the confidentiality of student records, that Law enforcement officers may not remove a student from school property or interrogate a student without the consent of the student’s parent, except during a typical crime investigation. The guidance reminds districts that under the federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, parents must consent to disclosing personally identifiable student information, except in some rare situations.

SUNY Delhi has been ranked among the country’s “Most Affordable Colleges for Incoming Freshman with Financial Need” by Student Loan Report. The ranking, based on Peterson’s college data, examined need-based scholarships and grants to incoming freshmen at more than 1,000 colleges. SUNY Delhi ranked at #158, with financial aid awarded to 87% of freshmen with financial need. The average financial aid award is $8,026.

The Sidney Rotary Club is funding a Recovery Coach Training Program at the Tri-Town Hospital today. The program implementation and content will be delivered by Mary Rosenthal, Executive Director of the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Council Delaware County and instructor, Jeannette Tolson. The Training begins today through this Friday, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
