State Police reported that 79 year old RoseMarie Windisch of Jefferson was the driver of a vehicle that veered into the opposing lane & hit a Flatbed Truck July 21st. Windisch was pronounced dead at the scene, on State Route 23 in the Town of Roxbury, The flatbed truck operators was unable to avoid the collision, & was treated at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown for non-life-threatening injuries.

State Police were requested to check the welfare of 62 year old Theodore Hammer of Unadilla Monday, he was located in a creek near his residence on Martin Brook Road in Unadilla. The investigation into the cause of his death is continuing.

The State Department of Labor today released preliminary local area unemployment rates for June 2022. Locally, Chenango County had 3% unemployment, Delaware County 3.5% & Otsego County 3.1% unemployment in June, the state Unemployment was at 4.4%.

Catholic Charities announced another successful Mass Food Distribution in Sidney on July 19th. 623 Households received food, 36 Families had 6 people or more in their household, a total of 1,742 People received over 17,000 pounds of food. 58 volunteers helped distribute the food at latest Sidney event.

The Chenango County Historical Society announced their Summer Barn Party, to be held from 6:00 to 8:30 PM on Friday August 5th in the Society’s Loomis Barn, at 41 Rexford Street in Norwich. Event proceeds will support a significant portion of the organization’s annual operating budget. Early bird tickets are $39 each at ChenangoHistorical.org through this Friday July 29.

Nyseg reported that the number of people without power locally was about 45 this afternoon, after crews have worked since Sunday to restore power. Downed trees & power lines caused thousands of power outages following Sunday’s Storms.

The State Health Department reported that the positivity rate from the latest strains of COVID 19 is still just under 10% state wide. Patient Hospitalizations continue to increase back up to 2,649, there are 253 ICU patients, 79 on ventilators, there were 24 more deaths reported in Hospitals & nursing homes from COVID 19.

The Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer will be held in Oneonta at Neahwa Park on September 25th this year, which is a key fundraiser for the Association, Spokesperson Ann Thayer told WCDO News that while the event is 2 months away, people can start forming teams to participate right now:

State Police responded to a shooting in the town of Union Monday night. An adult male was found to have been shot in the chest and was transported to Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City, The 40-year-old victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries.  There is no threat to the public and the investigation is on-going.  Anyone with information is asked to call State Police at (607)561-7400.

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced that nearly $70 million in grant funding has been awarded to newly licensed, registered or permitted child care programs in areas lacking child care slots, The funds were made available through the American Rescue Plan Act and are administered by the State Office of Children and Family Services. In the Southern Tier, $4,148,000 in grant funding will go to 26 child care facilities.

The State DOT announced that the Exit 5 ramp from southbound I-81 to U.S. Route 11 and the intersection of Route 11 and Old Front Street in the Town of Dickinson, is closed for about 10 days to accommodate construction of a new roundabout. Variable Messaging Signs are in place advising motorists of detours, Travelers should anticipate delays and allow for extra travel time.

SUNY Delhi Police and Delaware County 911 received calls at 9:15 AM indicating that a bomb had been placed in Evenden Tower on the SUNY Delhi campus and was set to explode within 45 minutes of the call.  Officials evacuated the building all classes scheduled for Evenden Tower have been canceled for the rest of Today.  Delhi Village Police, Delaware County Sheriff’s Department, Delaware County Emergency Management Office and State Police have responded, with The State Police Canine Unit inspecting the building.  Authorities said that the caller was very specific & there is no reason to believe that any other building on campus was targeted.

The Alzheimer’s association will hold a program in Sidney later this month, to discuss the 10 warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease and what the latest research indicates about the disease.  Ann Thayer of the Northeast New York chapter of the association will conduct the program:

Oneonta city officials announced that Spruce Street, between Elm & Maple would be closed to through traffic during normal working hours today through Friday.  Officials said that a NYSEG Contractor was replacing a gas main; anyone with questions can call the Oneonta engineering office at 432-6465.

The State Labor Department today released local area unemployment rates for January 2013.    The state’s unemployment rate was at 8.4% in January, with the private sector job count increasing by 102,600 in the last 12 months.  Locally, unemployment grew to 9.8% in Chenango County, 10.9% in Delaware County and 10% in Otsego, largely due to the end of holiday season hiring in retail establishments.

State Attorney General Eric  Schneiderman today joined 37 states in announcing a settlement with Google over its unauthorized collection of data from unsecured wireless networks nationwide. Between 2008 and March 2010, Google took photographs for its Street View service & they illegally collected and stored emails, text messages, passwords, and web histories transmitted over unsecured wireless networks without consumer consent.  Google has agreed to destroy the information, launch an employee training program to protect consumers and they will pay a $7 million fine to the states involved.  New York’s share of the settlement is approximately $192,000.

State Police in Binghamton arrested 22-year-old Sean Rake of Binghamton for Driving While Intoxicated with a BAC result of .15% and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance. The arrest resulted from a traffic stop on Airport Road in Dickinson; Rake was issued an Appearance Ticket returnable to the Town of Dickinson Court on March 19th.
