The United States Attorney’s Office in the Northern District announced that 51 year old Dennis Nelson, who is currently incarcerated in a Federal Prison in Massachusetts, pleaded guilty to mailing Bomb Threats in 2018 and 2019, while incarcerated in State of New York correctional facilities to U.S. District Judge Thomas McAvoy in Binghamton, then Congressman Anthony Brindisi & and to United States Senator Charles Schumer. Nelson faces a term of imprisonment of 84 months, a fine of up to $250,000, and a term of supervised release of up to 3 years when sentenced.

Broome County District Attorney Mike Korchak announced that Philip Garcia of Endicott, pleaded guilty to felony Arson. Garcia admitted that on May 2, 2021, in the Village of Endicott, he intentionally damaged property by setting a fire on a stove inside a Hillside Court apartment and the interior of a motor vehicle, by lighting objects inside the car on fire, after a domestic dispute with a 31-year-old female in the Village. The fire in the apartment was put out by residents with minimal smoke damage. The Endicott Fire Department responded to the scene and quickly extinguished the car fire. The vehicle sustained interior damage. Garcia, who has a criminal history dating back to 1992, will be sentenced to 5 years in New York State prison followed by 2 1/2 years post release supervision on June 9, 2023.

American Association of Retired Persons released a statement applauding 19th District Congressman Marc Molinaro for his stance on Social Security and Medicare. Congressman Molinaro has vowed to protect Social Security and Medicare and oppose cuts to the programs from fellow Congressional republicans, Molinaro said in recent interviews that cuts to Social Security and Medicare are off the table.

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced the nomination of Dr. James McDonald to serve as Commissioner of the New York State Department of Health. Dr. McDonald is originally from Cohoes and received his bachelor’s degree from Siena College. He joined the New York State Department of Health in July of 2022, serving as medical director of the Department’s Office of Public Health. He later was appointed Interim Director of the Center for Community Health and began serving as Acting Commissioner of Health on January 1 of this year.

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 24 year old Garyn Huntley of Oneonta following an attempt to flee police during a traffic stop on March 20th in the City of Oneonta. Huntley was charged with Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle, Reckless Driving, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of Motor Vehicle, Failure to Obey Police Officer, Operating a Motor Vehicle without Insurance, Speeding among several other charges, he was released on an appearance ticket for Oneonta Court on April 6th.

WCDO NEWS FRIDAY 1-4-19 http://www.wcdoonline.com/localnews/wcdo-news-friday-1-4-19/ Fri, 04 Jan 2019 18:33:55 +0000 http://www.wcdoonline.com/localnews/?p=6715 Continue reading ]]> 34 Year old Terrence Truitt of Oneonta faces a felony hearing today in Oneonta City Court, on a charge of 1st degree arson.  Truitt is accused of intentionally setting a fire at 5 Walling Avenue in Oneonta last Saturday morning that claimed the life of former Oneonta Firefighter John Heller.  Truitt is being held in the Otsego County jail pending future court action, addition charges in the case are possible.  A funeral service for Heller will be held starting at 1:00 this afternoon in the Foothills performing Arts Center Atrium, followed by a celebration of Heller’s life at the East Meredith Fire Station.

A new survey by the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities reports that Hartwick College generated an estimated $123 million in total economic impact on the region in 2017. More than $49 million was a result of direct spending by the institution.  Also noted in the survey, Hartwick College accounted for $5.4 million in average annual construction spending, up $700,000 from the previous survey in 2015. In 2017, the College opened its new $7.1 million living-learning apartment community on campus, which houses 72 upper-class students.

Broome County District Attorney Stephen Cornwell has announced today he will not seek re-election to the office for a 2nd 4 year term.   Cornwell defeated long-time District Attorney Gerald Mollen in 2015.

The State Department of Taxation and Finance reminds property owners age 65 and over who are applying or reapplying to receive the Enhanced STAR exemption in 2019 that they must now enroll in the Income Verification Program.  Those already enrolled in the IVP don’t need to take any action to continue receiving their Enhanced STAR exemption checks.  New IVP enrollees will automatically receive the exemption each year they’re eligible.  More information about the program registration is available at tax.ny.gov/STAR.

The City of Oneonta has been designated as a “Clean Energy Community” by NYSERDA, for reducing energy use, cutting costs and driving clean energy locally.  The City received the designation for completing 4 of 10 high-impact clean energy actions identified by NYSERDA as part of the Clean Energy Communities initiative. In addition, the designation gives the City an opportunity to apply for up to $5,000 toward additional clean energy projects, with no local cost share.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Village of Oxford man for an active Arrest Warrant issued by the Town of Preston Court.  42 year old Jason Barrows turned himself into the custody of the Sheriff; he was wanted for 2nd degree Burglary, Criminal Mischief and Grand Larceny for allegedly breaking into a residence & stealing more than $1,000 in property & Animals, and vandalizing windows on a vehicle.  Barrows was arraigned in the Town of Preston Court and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $5,000 cash bail. He is scheduled to reappear in court at a later date.

New State Attorney General Letitia James joined a coalition of 17 attorneys general, in filing a notice of appeal in Texas v. U.S., defending the Affordable Care Act and the healthcare of millions of Americans. Today’s filing moves the legal defense of the ACA to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit where the Attorneys General will appeal the lower court’s ruling that the ACA is unconstitutional. On December 30th the district court granted the request to certify the judgment for appeal, and to stay the judgment pending that appeal. Thursday’s filing continues the coalition’s legal defense of the ACA, with a request to appeal the district court’s December 14 opinion in the Fifth Circuit.

Democratic State Senator Jen Metzger was sworn into office Wednesday representing the 42nd District.  Metzger takes over the district that was held by John Bonacic, who decided to retire after finishing his last term after decades in state Government.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested Dustin Dunagan of Sherburne for Aggravated Unlicensed Operation & Criminal Possession of Marihuana on Wednesday.  Dunagan was arraigned in the Town of Plymouth Court and was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $200 cash bail. Dunagan is scheduled to appear in the Town of Pharsalia Court on a later date.

On Tuesday, a Town of Norwich resident was arrested by the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office for Promoting Prison Contraband 1st.  31 year old Derek Davies was charged after the Chenango County Correctional Division discovered prison contraband in Davies’ cell during a random search; he was processed and will be arraigned in the Town of Norwich Court

Utica Democratic Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi already announced his intentions to run for the 22nd congressional district in November 2018, at a press conference in Utica this morning. Brindisi seeks to unseat Republican Claudia Tenney, who is only 6 months into her first term in Congress. The 22nd congressional district covers part of Chenango & Broome Counties locally. Brindisi will reschedule a press conference for Binghamton that was postponed today due to the extraordinary session of the Assembly called by Governor Cuomo for today in Albany.

Lawmakers were called back to Albany today for an Extraordinary session to deal with some left over legislation that was not dealt with before the end of the 2017 session last Wednesday. Local Assemblyman Cliff Crouch said that some of the bills really should be dealt with by the local municipalities, and not the state legislature:

In the last weeks of the legislative session, state lawmakers had to decide on what Crouch called “Home Rule” issues, like allowing for counties to continue to collect sales tax, in addition to the issue of New York City Mayor Bill DeBlasio overseeing the City schools.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies & local EMT’s responded to a 1 car roll-over accident with entrapment, at approximately 2:00 PM Tuesday on State Highway 28 in the Town of Middletown. 78 year old Doris Hubar of Margaretville was extricated from the overturned vehicle & was transported to Margaretville Memorial Hospital and was transferred to Albany Medical Center for further treatment. Hubar may have experienced a medical emergency while driving, causing her to lose control & flip her vehicle after striking a tree. No tickets have been issued, the investigation is continuing.

The agenda for the meeting will be action planning for the upcoming 2017/2018 coalition year. This meeting will be led by the Prevention Resource Center and the National Guard Counterdrug Task Force.

Delaware County municipal leaders will listen to suggestions on ways in which they might be able to save money by sharing services or eliminating duplicated services at a public hearing today. The hearing will begin at 3:00 PM at the Delaware County Office Building on Main Street in Delhi. Delaware County Chamber staff will present cost-saving initiatives to those who have been tasked with presenting ideas to the Governor’s office. Governor Andrew Cuomo has encouraged municipalities to come up with ways to share services to save taxpayer dollars.
