The Chenango County Sheriff’s Department arrested 21-year-old Matthew DeVaul of Binghamton Tuesday, on a charge of Grand Larceny. DeVaul is accused in connection with a reported larceny of a vehicle from a Town of Afton residence; he was arraigned in the Town of Afton Court and remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $2000 cash bail pending future court action.

Oneonta Police responded to a possible drug overdoese death on Orchard Street on Tuesday. 45 year old Matthew Hill was found deceased in his apartment where drugs were located, he had been arrested in August by Oneonta Police on drug charges.

Governor Cuomo today announced that State Park campgrounds set a new record for attendance for the fifth consecutive year. Through Columbus Day, campsites, cabins and cottages across the state were occupied for more than 633,000 nights, surpassing 2015’s record of 623,891 nights. State Park camping occupancy has climbed nearly 17 percent since 2009.

State DOT officials today announced the scheduled reopening of the Interstate 81 southbound ramp to State Route 17 westbound, a major milestone in the $135 million project to reconstruct the Prospect Mountain Interchange of State Route 17 and I-81 in the city of Binghamton and town of Dickinson, Broome County. The I-81 southbound ramp to Route 17 had been closed since December 2014. An estimated $164 million project to reconfigure Interchange 4 will begin next spring and is expected to be completed by the end of 2019.

The New York State unemployment rate has dropped to its lowest level in over seven years in September, according to statistics released today by the State Labor Department. The statewide unemployment rate fell from 5.2% to 5.1% in September, the lowest level since April 2008, the state also added 11,400 private sector jobs in September.

The State DEC today urged outdoor adventurers to suspend exploration of caves and mine sites that serve as homes for bat hibernations. Human disturbances are harmful to the state’s bat population since the arrival of the disease known as white-nose syndrome, which has killed more than 90% of hibernating bats in New York. Officials warned that if you encounter hibernating bats while underground, leave the area as quickly and quietly as possible. 2 species of bats are currently protected under federal and state endangered species law, including the northern long-eared bat, which was prevalent in New York, but the current population for this formerly common bat is approximately 1% of its previous size.

On Saturday night, October 10th, Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 23 year old Erick Daly of Queens with Criminal Possession of a Weapon and Unlawful Possession of Marihuana, following traffic stop on State Highway 17 in the Town of Hancock. Troopers initially stopped Daly for driving 83 mph in a 55mph zone, Deputies found Daly to be in possession of marijuana and an electronic stun gun. Daly was arraigned in the Hancock Town Court and was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility in lieu of $500 bail.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 32 year old Joshua Whaley of Pitcher on an active arrest warrant for 3rd degree Burglary, Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Criminal Obstruction of Breathing plus several other charges. State Police arrested 44-year-old Patrick Burton of Binghamton for aggravated cruelty to animals. Troopers responded to a Broome County 911 report of animal abuse in Conklin. Burton is accused of beating his girlfriend’s dog; Burton was arraigned in the Town of Conklin Court and remanded to the Broome County Jail on $5,000 cash bail or $10,000 property bond.

New York State’s education commissioner Mary Ellen Elia stated that next spring’s Common Core tests would be shorter. Elia spoke to the Board of Regents Wednesday in Albany, she said that some of the writing and reading passages will be removed and the math assessments will lose some multiple-choice questions. The controversial tests are given statewide to 3rd to 8th grade students each spring to measure student and teacher performance. Elia said that teachers would have a greater role in developing the tests when the state begins working with new vendor Questar for the 2017 school year.

Sidney Firefighters responded yesterday to a fire at Acco in Sidney. The Fire was called in at about 2:15 as a problem with a garbage compacter that spread into a nearby wall, many of the Acco employees were evacuated, and no injuries were reported.

Hartwick College Officials announced that senior and football player, Dante Crump, and four of his companions were killed in a car accident Wednesday near Saugerties. Orange County Sheriff’s department reported that the 19-year-old woman was driving the vehicle, died after being airlifted to Albany Medical Center, the vehicle left the & went over an embankment, falling about 100 feet, before hitting a house & landing on the vehicles roof.

Binghamton Police and U.S. Marshals arrested 30-year-old Joshua Taylor of Binghamton, for 2nd degree murder for the July 24th shooting of 33-year-old James High of Binghamton. High was found lying on the sidewalk with gunshot wounds, in front of the Antler Lodge at 210 Chenango Street in Binghamton, he died a short time later at an area hospital. Taylor was located in the New York City and was returned to Binghamton Wednesday, the investigation is continuing and anyone with information is asked to contact Binghamton police at 772-7080.

State Police responded around 3:30 a.m. to the scene, where 2 passengers were trapped in the wrecked vehicle, they were extricated, & one died a short time later, the other was removed & taken to an area hospital. The State Department of Health today announced amended vaccination regulations for children entering or attending school. School children will now be mandated to receive a complete series of all required vaccines – or be in the process of doing so – in order to attend classes. Beginning September 1, children entering or attending kindergarten through grade 12 will be required to have two doses of the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine. Children entering kindergarten through grade 5 will need to have five doses of the vaccine for diphtheria, tetanus and a cellular pertussis. Children entering kindergarten, and grades 1, 6 and 7 must have four doses of the polio vaccine. Children who have not yet received all required vaccine doses must schedule appointments with their health care providers to complete the vaccine series in order to remain in school.

State Police in Deposit arrested 20-year-old Shawn Stamper of Johnson City, for Driving While Intoxicated, following a report of an accident with injuries on Chestnut Street in the Town of Windsor. Stamper was charged with DWI after he crashed into a guide rail and overturned, he was transported to Wilson Hospital with lacerations to his face, he was issued tickets for Town of Windsor Court on August 24th.

New York State could soon legalize marijuana for recreational use, as State Senator Liz Krueger will reintroduce the Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act during the next legislative session in January. The bill calls for allowing the opening of retail dispensaries, which would be regulated by the State Liquor Authority & would establish an excise tax on all marijuana sales. Adults would legally be able to possess up to 2 ounces of marijuana & grow up to 6 plants at home for personal use. New York became the to legalize medicinal marijuana recently, but only in smokeless forms.

Governor Cuomo signed legislation that requires property owners to notify their local governments whenever a newly constructed or rehabilitated residential structure is comprised of a truss type, pre-engineered wood or timber construction. The required notification process will allow local governments to provide fire departments and first responder organizations with information about buildings that employ this particular construction design, which is compromised quickly when exposed to heat & fire. The law takes effect on January 1, 2015.

A woman wanted on four warrants, was taken into custody Wednesday by the Broome County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies witnessed a woman passing unidentified items to another woman outside a window of the hotel, she drove off in a car with out-of-state plates, Deputies arrested the driver, Victoria Scott, of Florida, she was found to have suspended driving privileges in New York for failing to pay tickets issued in Binghamton. The passenger, 24-year-old Tiana Boer of Dunmore, Pennsylvania gave deputies a fake name and date of birth; Boer was charged with Criminal possession of a weapon, Criminal impersonation, and on warrants for Petty larceny, Prostitution, Resisting arrest & Escape.
