Otsego County Department of Health & the CDC recommends that everyone who is not fully vaccinated to contact their Health Care Provder & complete the polio vaccination series as soon as possible, especially children. In Otsego County, only 80.4% of 2 year olds are recorded as having the recommended doses of polio vaccine, locally, Delaware County has a vaccination rate of 89.4%, and Schoharie County 88.8%. So far, 8 polio cases are being investigated in Rockland, Sullivan and Orange Counties.

The 7th Annual Binghamton Porchfest returns this Sunday, from 12:00 noon to 7:00 PM. Porchfest invites thousands of community members each summer for a free afternoon of live music performed from the residential porches, stoops, this year 165 local and regional bands and 59 host locations will participate. Food vendors and restroom locations will be set up and a free shuttle service is available throughout Binghamton’s West End neighborhood.

The State Office of Cannabis Management announced that the State has begun accepting applications for the first adult-use cannabis retail dispensary licenses. The 1st legal retail dispensaries will be operated by those most impacted by the enforcement of the prohibition of cannabis, and those first sales will be made with products grown by New York farmers. New York’s recreational cannabis market is expected to reach $4.2 billion by 2027 and to create up to 60,000 jobs.

The Broome County Health Department reports a continuing increase in Overdoses in 2022, with 54 fatal overdoses & 333 Non fatal overdoses from January to this week. Broome County had as many as 76 fatal overdoses in 2016, the number was down to 32 in 2018, but the number of cases has increased every year since, with 54 last year. State Police responded to a crash between a motorcycle and vehicle on Conklin Road/ State Route 7 in the town of Conklin. The operator of the motorcycle was pronounced deceased on scene, he has been identified as 21 year old Tristan Thor of Vestal. The investigation indicates that 44 year old Seth Delvillano of Binghamton was traveling north on Conklin Road when he crossed over into the southbound lane and struck the motorcycle head-on, the investigation is on-going.

Otsego County Department of Health reported 33 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday, the highest number of cases reported since March. There have been 2 deaths this week from COVID-19. The County reported 93 active cases, with 4 hospitalized, the Delta variant is suspected in more than 95% of the current cases. Otsego County remains at a HIGH level of community transmission, the CDC & Otsego County Department of Health recommend everyone wear a mask indoors in public. They urge those who have not been vaccinated to do so as quickly as possible, sites can be found at otsegocounty.com or covid19vaccine.health.ny.gov.

State ethics regulators have asked State Attorney General Letitia James to investigate who may have illegally leaked information about a closed-door vote to Governor Cuomo’s office in 2019. The Joint Commission on Public Ethics, or JCOPE, voted to refer the matter to Attorney General James for a criminal investigation, if she accepts the referral, they would attempt to figure out who provided Cuomo’s office with legally protected information from the ethics panel regarding a complaint against Cuomo’s former top aide, Joseph Percoco.

Chenango Arts Council is seeking memorabilia, yearbooks and other items from the years its 27 West Main Street location served as the Norwich City Middle and High Schools. Submitted items will be displayed in the gallery exhibit “Back to School”, and items will be returned once the show closes. Those interested in sharing their memorabilia will be please deliver it to the Council at 27 West Main Street, Norwich by September 10th, the exhibit will open with a public reception on Friday, September 17th at 5:30pm. A Blood drive is also being held today at the Elm Park Methodist Church on Chestnut Street in Oneonta from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM, and a blood drive is also being held in Norwich today at the Broad Street Methodist Church from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Delaware County Public Health announced that they had 54 new cases of COVID 19 in the last week, with 65 active cases, 4 hospitalized, 117 quarantined, they have had 2679 positive cases with 52 deaths since the pandemic began.

Delaware County’s Board of Elections has received funding from a grant to change their system thanks. The Board is planning to create more access with a new early voting site at an undetermined location & they are working on securing a Technology Innovation and Election Resource Grant to purchase an absentee ballot scanner and additional software.

WCDO NEWS THURSDAY 8-22-19 http://www.wcdoonline.com/localnews/wcdo-news-thursday-8-22-19/ Thu, 22 Aug 2019 18:40:23 +0000 http://www.wcdoonline.com/localnews/?p=7171 Continue reading ]]> State Police responded to Town Brook Road at Red Rock Road in the town of Stamford to a report of a propane truck in a ditch and on its passenger side.  An investigation revealed that for an unknown reason, possibly medically related, 62 year old Edward Walley of Delhi drove off the roadway, into a ditch and struck a utility pole before rolling to its passenger side.  Walley was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.   An autopsy is scheduled for later today, the investigation is continuing.

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 2 people on a variety of drug charges after a search warrant was executed in the town of Worcester.  Deputies arrested 30 year old Jesse Wilson & 29 year old Samone Van Buren, they seized crack cocaine, suboxone, marijuana, $2,000 in cash, drug paraphernalia,   and Wilson and VanBuren were arraigned in the Town of Worcester Court and sent to the Otsego County Jail on $25,000 cash or $50,000 bond pending court action on September 3rd.

Former Cooperstown teacher Justin Hobbie pleaded guilty to 3 counts of sexual exploitation of a child.  Hobbie was accused of persuading girls under the age of 16 of sending him explicit videos.  Hobbie will be sentenced in December he will likely serve jail time & will be required to register as a sex offender.

Governor Cuomo signed legislation strengthening protections for minors against felony sex offenders. The law prevents minors from being placed in the custody of an individual who has been convicted of rape in the first or second degree, sexual conduct against a child in the first degree or predatory sexual assault against a child, it also prevents sex offenders from having unsupervised visits with a person who has been convicted of a felony sexual offense against the subject of the visitation order.

New York state farms generated $5.7 billion in revenue in 2017, according to a report released today by State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli.  New York has 33,400 farms, employs more than 55,000, farmland covers 23% of the state’s total land area,   New York ranks second nationwide for the production of apples and maple syrup, ranks third for grapes and eleventh for beer.  New York is the third largest producer of wine, with its wineries producing nearly 32 million gallons in 2017. Governor Cuomo signed legislation allowing victims of domestic violence to seek damages against individuals who fail to obey or enforce an order of protection; expanding the eligibility for victim compensation to victims of unlawful surveillance crimes who did not suffer a physical injury and expanding the definition of “child victim” to include children who witness a crime to ensure those children are eligible for victim compensation and assistance.
