Tri-Town Theater perform the classic Broadway hit musical “Oliver” later this month, based on the Charles Dickens novel “Oliver Twist”, about an English boy growing up in an orphanage in the 1800’s. The Otsego County Solid Waste Department and the Otsego County Conservation Association are teaming up once again to promote the Otsego County Schools Plastic Film Recycling Challenge. The challenge promotes recycling of film plastics and is open to all public and private k-12 school buildings located in Otsego County. The challenge kicks off on America Recycles Day, November 15, and runs through April 14, 2023.

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced that since early January, when mobile sports wagering became available in New York, the State has collected $542 million in taxes through the week ending October 30, far surpassing every other state in the nation. An additional $200 million in licensing fees has also been collected, generating a total of more than $740 million in revenue, most of it to be used for education.

State Police announced that the body of Frederick Mayock of Springfield Massachusetts was found in Canadarago Lake in Otsego County yesterday. Mayock was reported missing after he went kayaking October 22nd.

Delaware County Sheriff’s office arrested 41 year old Billie Jo Browning of Unadilla, after Deputies responded on October 28th, to a 2-car property damage motor vehicle accident on State Highway 28 in the Town of Meredith. Deputies arrested Browning for Aggravated Unlicensed Operation, she will appear in the Town of Meredith court at a later date.

The Broome County District Attorney’s Office announced that 32-year-old Stephen Moran of Binghamton was arraigned in Broome County Court Thursday, he was charged with aggravated vehicular homicide, vehicular manslaughter, 2nd degree manslaughter, along with several other charges, he is accused of driving intoxicated at an excessive speed August 8th on the Vestal Parkway, his vehicle crashed into a vehicle occupied by Alfred and Paula Latessa, Alfred was pronounced dead at the scene, Paula succumbed to her injuries at an area hospital shortly after the crash.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Office announced that a man missing from Delaware County was discovered illegally harvesting ginseng in the town of Middletown. The unidentified man was reported missing on August 31st after he failed to return home; an acquaintance found the man’s vehicle on a private logging road in the town of Middletown. The Sheriff’s Office K9 team located the missing person in good health, An Environmental Conservation Office seized the ginseng he was charged with harvesting ginseng without landowner permission, trespassing, and petty larceny.

The Greater Binghamton Airport announced today that they will be offering additional flights to New York City shortly. Officials announced that Delta Airlines will be offering 2 flights a day to LaGuardia Airport, starting on January 9th. Tickets for the New York City flights will be sold starting tomorrow.

State Police are continuing their search to locate Frederick Mayock who was last seen on the Canadarago Lake boat launch with a kayak on October 22, 2022. Investigators are asking the public who live or have businesses near Canadarago Lake and near the boat launch on State Highway 28 to review security or surveillance footage that show a white kayak (pictured below). If anyone has video of the kayak from Saturday, October 22 between the hours of 9am and 8pm to please contact New York State Police at (607)561-7400.

The State Health department reports the incidence of COVID 19 cases has remained steady, with the state positivity rate for those tested still slightly over 6%. Patient Hospitalizations have been slowly increasing, up to more than 2800, with almost 300 New Yorkers in an ICU & 116 on Ventilators, a 27% increase over a 7 day period. The total number of deaths in Hospitals & nursing homes is 58, 578 since the pandemic began.

Governor Kathy Hochul and Attorney General Letitia James today announced a major expansion in usage of New York State’s Red Flag Law. Following an executive order and legislation signed by Governor Hochul, courts across the State have issued 1,908 Extreme Risk Protection Orders, more than doubling the number of orders issued since the law became effective in 2019. State Police have applied for 339 orders since the Buffalo Tops Supermarket shooting, that was more than 300% higher than the number of applications made last year, and courts have approved 86.5% of those applications.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested 25 year old Ryan Decker of Walton Sunday, after Deputies observed a vehicle traveling at 72 miles per hour in a posted 55 mph speed zone. Decker was stopped & a check of his driver’s license revealed that his driving privileges were suspended in the State of New York. Decker was charged with Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle, speeding along with other charges, he was released and is scheduled to appear in the Town of Colchester Court at a later date.

State Police responded Saturday to the Canadarago Lake boat launch for a report of a missing kayaker. 47-year-old Frederick Mayock of Springfield, Massachusetts was last seen assembling a kayak at approximately 12:30 pm., his kayak and other items were later found unoccupied. State Police Helicopters & Divers responded, anyone who may see Mayock is asked to call State Police in Sidney at (607) 561-7400.

Oneonta Police & Emergency crews responded Friday night when a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle on the James F. Lettis Highway, at about 6:45 PM. 54 year old Dale Clark was found in the roadway, he was struck by 1 vehicle, and was later declared deceased. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Oneonta Police Department at 607-432-1111.

The spread of Delta Variant has prompted new restrictions, as it is more aggressive and much more easily transmitted than previously strains.  According to the CDC, the Variant is now responsible for more than 80% of infections in the United States, largely among unvaccinated people.  Governor Cuomo discussed the change in the CDC guidance at a press conference this morning:

The CDC reported that the good news is that the vaccines continue to provide strong protection against COVID-19, including the Delta Variant.  If you are not vaccinated, you are at risk for illness and possible death as 99.7% of new COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths are unvaccinated people.

A tractor trailer roll-over accident in Meridale late Thursday night resulted in the closure of State Highway 28 for more than 7 hours. Delaware County Sheriff’s Office reported that the cargo was manually off-loaded and the wreckage removed from the highway.  The driver was 43 year-old Elysee Moise of Florida, he was extricated from the truck and transported to Fox Hospital in Oneonta, for treatment of injuries sustained in the accident.  The DEC Spill Response Team responded to the scene to contain and mitigate the spill of boxed dairy products & truck fuel.  The investigation is ongoing, excessive speed on the wet roadway was a contributing factor in this accident.

The State Department of Transportation announced that applications are currently being accepted for 57 full-time positions in their fleet administration and transportation maintenance disciplines in the Southern Tier. Additional positions are anticipated to be filled in the coming months. The Department is also teaming up with the Department of Labor to host virtual job fairs to help recruit qualified workers.  More than 400 positions are currently available across the state.

Over 93,000 people were tested for COVID Saturday with over 2500 Positives, for a positivity rate of 2.68%.  Patient Hospitalizations were back up to 738, Patients in ICU was up to 152, and those on Ventilators was back up to 52.  There were 9 deaths reported Saturday.

State Troopers and other first responders were dispatched to Canadarago Lake for a man that went into the water and did not resurface.  Members of the State Police, the Otsego County Sheriff’s Department, State Park Police, and others responded to the scene Saturday, An investigation revealed that 54-year-old David Morrissey of Mohawk went into the lake after he saw his boat drifting away, he did not resurface.  Morrissey was recovered from the lake several hours later by the New York State Police Underwater Recovery Team.

The indictment charges Manchion with 1st & 2nd degree manslaughter, & 2nd degree Assault, Jones died from blunt force trauma to the head for repeatedly being hit in the head with a glass mug.

State Police are investigating an accidental drowning on Canadarago Lake Monday last night. The victim is identified as 19-year-old Dustin Groat of Jordanville. Troopers responded at about 9:45 PM Monday, they learned that 2 teenagers were on separate kayaks, they each capsized and one was missing in the water. The investigation revealed that as the storm approached, the teens began to paddle back to the boat launch but Groat’s kayak capsized; he was not wearing a floatation device. The other unidentified teen was unable to find Groat & went back to the shore and call for help. The investigation is continuing.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office has released the names of the 2 people who died in a Motorcycle accident on June 16th on State Route 26 in the Town of Nanticoke. The deceased motorcyclists have been identified as 41 year old Kathryn Schultheis of Binghamton and 39 year old Brandy Lynn of Newark Valley. Deputies said that the operator of the pick-up truck was 35 year old Sarah Robbins of Whitney Point, she was not injured, and the accident is still under investigation.

State Police arrested 23 year old Khalil Derios Jr of Oneonta, for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance. Derios was stopped after he pulled through a checkpoint on State Route 7 in the town of Oneonta, a search yielded crack cocaine in Derios’s possession, he was arrested and issued an appearance ticket returnable to the town of Oneonta Court for today.

State Police arrested 32 year old Brandy Hodge of Greene for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a motor vehicle and Unlawful Possession of Marihuana. Troopers observed Hodge operating a portable electronic device while driving on State Highway 12 in the town of Greene, she was stopped and search uncovered marijuana, her license was also found to be suspended. Hodge was arrested and issued appearance tickets for town of Greene Court on Thursday.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office responded Friday to a fatal motorcycle crash in Colesville on Cafferty Road. 57-year-old Keith Bernhardsen of Harpursville was located in a field on the side of the road, he was transported Bernhardsen to Wilson Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Bernhardsen attempted to make a left turn and the motorcycle went off the road into the field.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 36 year old Scott Johnson of Sidney Center for DWI, Aggravated DWI, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation, Endangering the Welfare of a Child, plus several other charges, Johnson is accused of operating a motor vehicle in an intoxicated state with 2 children in his vehicle in the Town of Masonville. Johnson held a conditional license and was operating his vehicle outside of the restrictions; he was arraigned in the Town of Masonville Court, and remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility on $2,500 cash bail, or $5,000 bond pending court action at a later date.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 28 year old Cesar Ortiz of Palms Springs Florida, on charges of driving while intoxicated, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle 3rd degree, and failure to keep right. Ortiz was arranged in Town of Delhi Court and sent to the Delaware County Correctional Facility on $1000 cash or $2000 bond and is to reappear in Town of Hamden Court at a later date. Deputies were assisted by members of the Walton Police Dept.

The City of Oneonta will hold a public hearing this evening at the Oneonta Common Council Meeting at 7:00 pm at City Hall to receive public comments on the City’s community development needs, and to discuss the possible submission of 1 or more Community Development Block Grant applications for 2018. The City is currently considering a grant application for $230,000 for Nick’s Diner on Chestnut Street.

Oneonta Department of Public Service announced that crews will be flushing water mains in the high service area starting 9 am to 4 pm, today. Affected areas include: Homer Folks Ave., Overlook Drive, Suncrest Terrace, College Terrace, West St. Ravine Parkway and the streets north of SUNY Oneonta. Flushing in these areas is expected to be completed this week, with flushing in other areas to continue the following week.
