The United States Department of Justice announced that 54 year old David VanHousen of Newark Valley was sentenced to 13 years in prison for possessing child porn. VanHousen previously pleaded guilty to the crime and admitted while civilly committed at the Central New York Psychiatric Center, following several sex offenses and child pornography-related convictions, he possessed numerous images and videos of child pornography on a contraband cell phone. VanHousen was convicted in 2001 for sexual misconduct and rape in the third degree and transportation of child pornography in federal court. VanHousen will also serve a life term of supervised release following his release from prison, and he must register as a sex offender.

State Police issued 18,375 tickets statewide during the ‘Spring Safe Driving’ enforcement, from April 9th to April 14th. State Police focused on speeding, aggressive driving, distracted driving and the Move Over law. Statewide, Troopers issued over 6800 tickets for Speeding, almost 1100 for distracted driving, 337 for the Move Over Law, In Troop C, Troopers issued 1120 tickets during the enforcement period.

Broome County District Attorney’s office announced that 40 year old Carheem Felton of Binghamton was sentenced in Broome County Court to 9 years in New York State Prison, followed by 5 years of post-release supervision for Criminal Possession of a weapon. On the 2nd of August 2022, Felton opened fire at another individual at the Northside Deli on Chenango Street in Binghamton. The Binghamton Police Department investigated the shooting and located Felton fleeing the scene while still in possession of the firearm.

State Police executed a search warrant on Center Street in the town of Oneonta relative to a child pornography investigation. An investigation determined that a 17-year-old at the residence obtained numerous images of child pornography on a cell phone, the suspect was arraigned in Otsego County Youth Part Court and released on charges of Possessing and Promoting a Child Sexual Performance. The investigation is ongoing.

35 year old Charles Harrison of Binghamton was sentenced Thursday to serve 48 months in federal prison following his trial and conviction for possessing a firearm as convicted felon. The trial evidence demonstrated that, following his 2012 conviction in a federal court for Conspiracy to Possess and Distribute controlled substances, Harrison was serving the final portion of his sentence at a halfway house in Connecticut, he escaped, resulting in a warrant being issued for his arrest, US Marshals found him in March 2022 hiding under a mattress in an apartment in Binghamton, Marshals also located a loaded handgun next to Harrison, the jury voted to convict him of possessing the firearm Harrison was sentenced to serve 3 years of supervised release to begin after his prison sentence.

Delaware County Sheriff’s office arrested Thomas Taranto of South New Berlin for DWI, on State Highway 8 in the Town of Masonville. On January 11th, Deputies observed a vehicle traveling at 72 miles per hour in a 55 miles per hour zone, they performed a traffic stop & charged Taranto with driving while ability impaired by drugs, Speeding, obstructed plate, & Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Taranto released on the traffic tickets and an appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear in the Town of Masonville Court at a later date to answer the charges.

The Sidney Center Improvement Group annual meeting will be held this coming Monday, at 6:30pm at the Sidney Center Fire Hall. The meeting is open to the public and all are welcome to attend. Delaware County District Attorney’s Office announced that 25 year old Zachary Rowe of Harpursville appeared in Delaware County Court and pleaded guilty to Attempted Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Rowe appeared in Delaware County Court for a court conference on January 16th, he admitted that he possessed fentanyl in the Village of Sidney on October 1, 2023, and he intended to sell fentanyl, he also admitted to using drugs in close proximity to a child. Rowe was sentenced to a 5-year term of felony probation supervision, he must successfully complete the Delaware County Adult Treatment Program, if he does not successfully complete the program, he will be re-sentenced to 4 years in state prison and two years of post-release supervision.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested 34 year old Amanda Nodine of Delhi & 25-year-old Chance Byington of Colchester, after Deputies received a call Sunday from a Home owner reporting that his personal property in the Town of Delhi had been set on fire. Deputies charged Nodine with Criminal Contempt for Violating an active Order of protection, plus 1 count each of Arson & Criminal Mischief. Deputies charged Byington for Criminal Mischief & Arson. Nodine was arraigned in the Town of Hamden Court, an order of protection was issued on behalf of the victim, and she was released in her own recognizance will appear in Town of Delhi Court at a later date. Byington was also released on an Appearance Ticket returnable to the Town of Delhi Court at a later date.

State Police arrested 18 year old Noe Casas-Aguilar of Binghamton and a 17-year-old juvenile for 2 counts of 1st degree Burglary, 2 counts of 1st degree Robbery plus Criminal Possession of a Weapon & Reckless Endangerment. Troopers were dispatched Sunday Morning to a residence on Bevier Street in the town of Dickinson for a report of 2 males that broke into an occupied home. The suspects fled the area and were located later in Binghamton and were arrested. Casas-Aguilar was transported to Broome County Jail for Central Arraignment and Processing. The 17-year-old was transported to Oneida County Correctional Facility.

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced the ratification of a 5-year labor agreement with the Civil Service Employee Association, which includes over 52,000 State employees. The agreement passed with 80% approval, it runs until April 1^st 2026, it includes raises in each year of the agreement of 2% for the first 2 years and 3% for the remaining 3 years.

State Police were dispatched Sunday Night to Parker Hollow Road near Sunshine Mountain Road in the town of Sidney to a single vehicle crash, where a vehicle went off the roadway, struck a tree and became engulfed in flames. The victim has been identified as 58 year old Tammy Oefelein of Bainbridge, her dog also died in the accident.
