Josie Valdes-Pica of Binghamton was sentenced to 7 years in State Prison followed by 5 years post-release supervision for Attempted Assault, plus 2nd & 3rd degree Assault in Broome County Court Today. In November 2022, Valdes-Pica was arrested by Binghamton Police for striking a female victim multiple times with a metal baseball bat, causing injuries.

36 year old Ryan Wood of Sidney pleaded guilty to in Delaware County Court to Attempted Criminal Sale of a controlled substance. Wood sold Fentanyl to an undercover Police Informant in Sidney Last September, he was indicted in February on the charge and pleaded guilty this week in Delhi, sentencing will be held at a later date.

Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 29 year old Jacob Nack of Laurens for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, as well as for Executing a Bench Warrant. Nack was arrested following an investigation into a Domestic Incident in the Town of Laurens, he was found to have an active bench warrant out of the City of Oneonta and was also found to be in possession of a controlled substance, Nack was turned over to the Oneonta Police for the outstanding warrant, he will appear in Town of Laurens Court on the drug charge at a later date.

Broome County Sheriff’s Office arrested 43 year old Himichal Sagar of India for scamming a senior citizen out of $36,000. The Liberty Police Department investigated a report of an elaborate scam that stole $36,000 from a 76-year-old Liberty resident, who had a potential virus on her computer, was contacted by someone claiming to work for the virus company, he convinced her to withdraw the money from her accounts and gave it to the man to put in a safer account while the virus was removed. Investigators found Sagar’s rented vehicle at a hotel parking lot in the Town of Dickinson, Broome County deputies were called to assist and Sagar was taken into custody, the full amount of $36,000 was recovered. Sagar was charged with 3rd degree Grand Larceny & was released with an appearance ticket, but was ordered to surrender his passport to the court.

The USDA announced that Cargill Meat Solutions of Hazleton, Pennsylvania, is recalling approximately 16,243 pounds of raw ground beef products. The ground beef products were produced on April 26 & 27th, with an establishment number of “EST 86P” printed on the back of the label. The products were shipped to Walmart stores in New York State & many other states, they are potentially contaminated with E. coli. Consumers can contact Cargill Meat Solutions at 1-844-419-1574.

Broome County Sheriff’s deputies responded last Thursday to a report of inappropriate behavior and abuse of a juvenile female victim in the Town of Maine, where a family acquaintance had conducted several inappropriate physical and sexual interactions with a child. 74 year old Mark Turner of the Town of Maine was charged with 4 Counts of Sexual Abuse, he was arrested and taken into custody without incident and was being held for Court action at the Broome County Correctional Facility.

39 year old Timothy Jarczynski of Maryland pleaded guilty to DWI in Davenport Town Court & was sentenced to a 1-year conditional discharge. On September 28, 2022, a citizen called 911 to report an erratic driver on State Route 23, after following Jarczynski for approximately 10 minutes, he crashed into a ditch where a State Trooper determined that Jarczynski was impaired at the time of the accident. Jarczynski was sentenced to a 1-year conditional discharge and his license was revoked, he was ordered to attend a victim impact panel and successfully complete the impaired driver’s program, If he obtains a driver’s license, he will be required to install an ignition interlock device in any vehicle he owns or operates, he could still face 1 year in jail if he violates any of these conditions.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested 23 year old Jarrett Griffin of Walton on an arrest warrant issued out of the Town of Tompkins Court. On April 4th, Deputies located Griffin and arrested him, Griffin is accused of making threats over texts and Facebook, he’s been charged with 3 counts of Aggravated Harassment, he was processed, and turned over to the custody of the Delaware County Jail for future court action.

45 year old Katrina Lott of West Edmeston pleaded guilty to Driving While Intoxicated and was sentenced to 3 years of probation, in Deposit Town Court last week. On June 13, 2023, Lott was driving on County Route 8, when she lost control of her vehicle and drove into the ditch. A State Trooper responded to the crash scene and determined that Lott was likely under the influence of alcohol when open containers were spotted in the vehicle. Lott had a BAC of .16% – two times the legal limit.

2 Law Enforcement officers were killed, and the suspect was also killed in an incident in Liverpool Sunday night. Syracuse Police Officers encountered a suspicious vehicle Sunday Night, they attempted a traffic stop & the vehicle took off, officers did get the License plate number, it was traced to a Liverpool address to stop the vehicle, Syracuse Police & Onondaga Sheriff’s Deputies responded & were encountered by an armed male and an exchange of gunfire followed. One Syracuse Police Officer and one Onondaga County Sheriff’s Deputy were struck by gunfire. The armed suspect was also shot, all 3 were taken to Upstate University Hospital, all 3 succumbed to their injuries.

The Acco Brands plant in Sidney is being sold, Acco Officials said that the company signed a non-binding letter of intent to sell the building to a renewable energy company, if the building is sold in 2024, operations would continue in Sidney throughout much of 2024. CONVALT of Watertown is believed to be the purchaser as they announced on their website their plans to build their main factory, in Sidney with a targeted date of commercial operation in the 1st quarter of 2025.

24-year-old Kelvin Marfo of Delhi was charged with Aggravated Unlicensed Operator of a Motor Vehicle, plus other charges following an accident investigation. On April 6th Deputies responded to an iPhone Crash Detection for a motor vehicle accident on State Highway 28 in the Town of Meredith. Deputies found the motor vehicle accident, 2 of the occupants were transported for non-life-threatening injuries to a local hospital, while 2 others were treated by EMS. Marfo’s driving privileges were suspended for Failing to Answer a Summons, Marfo was issued an Appearance Ticket to appear before the Town of Meredith Court at a later date.

Last Wednesday, Oneonta Police Department was called to investigate a reported gunshot wound by A.O. Fox hospital emergency room staff. Officers learned that 51-year-old John Walley of Otego was transported to the hospital by a third party in a private vehicle, which left before police arrived. Walley was interviewed briefly and stated that he was on Chestnut Street when he was injured by a bullet, no evidence at the scene was found, he was re-interviewed & has refused to cooperate. The case will be closed but may be re-opened should additional information be received and the victim agree to cooperate. Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested 45 year old Nehemiah Clark of Bloomville and 25 year old Jordan Clark of Andes man on drug charges. Deputies assisted State Parole Officers with conducting a home visit at the Delaware County homeless shelter in Bloomville, where it was determined that the parolee was not at the residence and was violating his terms with parole, a vehicle was observed passing by with the parolee inside and a traffic stop was conducted. Deputies & K9 Dexter determined that both occupants were in possession of fentanyl, they were charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance & were released on appearance tickets to the Town of Kortright Court at a later date.

State Department of Labor reported that the state private sector job total was back up to 8.33 Million in February 2024, which is back up to pre-pandemic levels. The State’s unemployment rate decreased .1% to 4.4% in February, the statewide labor force participation rate held steady at 61.4% in February 2024.

The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested 27 year old Ford Bailey-Banks of Davenport for 2nd degree Burglary, criminal trespass. On March 5th, 2024, Sheriffs Deputies received a complaint that Bailey-Banks had entered onto another’s property and into dwelling, where he stole multiple items as well a firearm, he was transported to the Delaware County Sheriffs Office to await Centralized Arraignment Processing and will be scheduled to appear at the Town of Harpersfield Court at a later date to answer for the charges.

State Police arrested 25 year old Jesse Micha-Hurlburt of Bainbridge, for Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Disseminating Indecent Material of a Minor 2nd degree, Coercion and Unlawful Publication of an Intimate Image. On December 8, 2023, State Police received a report of an unknown individual requesting indecent material from a minor over text message and social media, he was arrested earlier this week, and was transported to Chenango County Jail.

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 39 year old Timothy Melius of Pittsfield for Aggravated Cruelty to Animals, Failure to Provide Sustenance to Animals, Endangering the Welfare of a Child & Harassment following an investigation in to reported on-going child abuse in the Town of Pittsfield. Investigation revealed that Melius allegedly subjected minors to physical abuse & for intentionally kill a kitten with a baseball bat. Melius was located Wednesday and was taken in to custody, and was being held at the Otsego County Correctional Facility pending future court action, an order of Protection was requested to be issued on behalf of the victims.

State Police today announced that it issued 5,576 tickets during this year’s St. Patrick’s Day enforcement initiative. State Troopers arrested 132 people for DWI and investigated 199 crashes, which resulted in 25 people being injured and no fatalities. Troopers ticketed 1788 for speeding, 406 tickets were issued in the Troop C area.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested a current Delaware County Inmate. Last Friday, Investigators of the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office received information that 48-year-old Deanna Besser of Brooklyn was a fugitive from the State of Pennsylvania, with outstanding warrants for failure to appear on a total of 16 separate charges not related to the Delaware County charges. At the conclusion of their investigation, Sheriff’s Investigators arrested Besser on a Fugitive from Justice complaint. Besser was later arraigned at the Delaware County CAP court and was remanded back to the Delaware County Correctional Facility pending extradition back to the State of Pennsylvania.

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced recommendations by the State Board for Historic Preservation to add 15 properties to the State and National Registers of Historic Places. Locally the house at 120 Balcom Road, in Mount Vision built in 1810 was nominated, along with The Methodist Episcopal Church and the Free Church were both built in 1857 directly across the road from each other in North Harpersfield.

64 year old Johannes Vulto pleaded guilty Tuesday in federal court to producing cheese that caused a listeria outbreak that killed 2 people and hospitalized six others in 2016. U.S. Senators Chuck Schumer & Gillibrand announced that the the U.S. Department of Agriculture will provide a historic investment of $82,141,000 to Upstate New York to bring clean water, to rural communities. Locally, the Village of Greene will receive $11 Million Dollars in funds and almost 9 Million Dollars in Grant money to replace water mains, fire hydrants and update water meters and meter-reading equipment.

State Police arrested 36 year old Michael Crandall of Apalachin when he was released from an area Hospital, he was charged with 1 count of 2nd degree Murder and 3 counts Criminal Contempt. Crandall is accused of killing a woman in a domestic dispute last Monday at 10 Debra Lee Drive in Apalachin, he was arraigned in a Tioga County Court on Friday, the incident remains under active investigation and further details will be released as appropriate pending further criminal court actions.

The State Comptroller’s office audited the Deposit Village Board, the audit found that the Village Board made 93 credit card purchases during the audit period, they did not ensure compliance with the Village’s credit card policy and approved 83 credit card purchases totaling $20,659 without the required supporting documents to show funds were being expended for legitimate Village purposes. The audit’s Recommendation was to Ensure the deputy clerk complies with the Village’s credit card policy and that each claim has sufficient supporting documentation before authorizing payment. Village officials planned corrective action.

Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 79 year old Ronald Johnson of Cooperstown for forcible touching & harassment. Johnson was charged following a complaint in the Town of Hartwick, where Johnson, while working in his capacity as a Realtor, is accused of forcibly touching the intimate parts of another person while the defendant was conducting a house showing. Johnson was arrested by investigators this week, he was processed and was being held in the Otsego County Correctional Facility for arraignment.

State Police received a cybertip of child sexual abuse material that was uploaded to a mobile messaging application in November, An investigation determined that 31 year old Bethany Crispell of Smithville, used a mobile messaging application to view and exchange child sexual materials. Crispell was charged with Promoting a Sexual Performance by a Child Under the Age of 17 and Possessing a Sexual Performance by a Child, she was remanded to the Cortland County Correctional Facility and is due to appear in the Town of Smithville Court on February 6th.

3 murder suspects are in custody after a joint police operation between the U.S. Marshals, Southern Tier SWAT Team, the Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force and the Endicott Police Department Wednesday night. U.S. Marshals Service notified Broome County Sheriff’s Deputies of 3 murder suspects possibly staying in Endicott, for a murder, robbery & Arson on January 20th in Norristown, Pennsylvania. A Broome County Jury found Matthew Devaul of Binghamton, guilty of 3rd degree Burglary, and Criminal Mischief, he faces up to 7 years in New York State Prison. Broome County District Attorney Paul Battisti announced that a Broome County jury found Jerome Adams of Binghamton, guilty of Criminal Contempt. On March 22, 2023 Adams violated an order of protection that was issued just 5 days earlier, by going to the home of the protected party. During the trial, Adams also admitted that he had previously been convicted of Criminal Contempt in 2018, he faces up to 2-4 years in New York State prison. Sentencing is scheduled for April 26 in Broome County Court.

Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 31 year old Shean Seeley of Otego following an investigation of alleged child abuse. State Forest rangers announced that 1 man was dead after an ice-fishing accident in Otsego County on Saturday. Rangers responded to the report of 2 ice fisherman fall through the ice on Basswood Pond in the town of Burlington, Forest Ranger Nate Laymon responded to the scene, pulled the first man to safety, he went back to for the 2nd man, both men were taken to Bassett hospital, the 41-year-old was declared deceased, his identity has not been released.

20-year-old Jamie Bailey of Binghamton was arrested following a traffic stop in Johnson City Wednesday. Officers located the vehicle that was considered suspicious, they found that the registration was suspended. While attempting to remove the license plates from the vehicle, officers located Bailey fleeing from the scene. Bailey was apprehended, struggled with arresting officers, who found a loaded ghost gun & a handgun in Bailey’s possession. Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar delivered a progress report on the 1st year as Sheriff in Broome County, and the work of the Re-Entry Task Force, who worked to improve the Correctional facility:

Delaware County Sheriff’s office announced the arrest of 2 people following a Traffic Stop on State Highway 10 in the Town of Walton last month. Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies observed a vehicle to be speeding, they conducted a traffic stop & identified the driver of the vehicle as 34-year-old Honesty Muller of Hamden, whose driving privileges had been suspended for failure to pay driver responsibility assessment. Deputies also identified a passenger in the vehicle to be 28-year old Adam Robinson of Walton, Muller had an active Order of Protection against Robinson Muller was charged with Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a motor vehicle and Speeding, they charged Robinson with Criminal contempt, both were ordered to appear in Walton Town Court at a later date.

Lane is accused of relocating from a residence in the Town of Oneonta to a new location in the Town of Milford without notifiying authorities, Lane was located in the City of Oneonta Tuesday & was taken in to custody, he was processed & was being held in the Otsego County Correctional Facility to await an appearance in Otsego County Centralized Arraignment.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies were on patrol in the Village of Walton Sunday and stopped a vehicle for multiple vehicle and traffic law violations. Deputies seized a quantity of narcotics and methamphetamine from the occupants and vehicle, Deputies arrested 40 year old Patrick Ladd of Walton for 5 counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance, & 43 year old Leslie McClenon of Walton was charged with several traffic violations & criminal possession of a controlled substance for possessing Methamphetamine with intent to sell, a 3rd occupant of the vehicle was released at the scene without charges at this time. McClenon was subsequently released on appearance tickets and directed to appear at the Village of Walton court at a later date. Ladd was held at the Delaware County Correctional Facility for centralized arraignment.

Fresh Express has issued a voluntary recall of a Fresh Express Spinach, 8 oz. size, with product code G332 and use-by date of December 15 and Publix Spinach, 9 oz size, with product code G332 and a now expired use-by date of December 14 due to a potential health risk from Listeria. Fresh Express is sold in a large number of grocery stores across the region, so far no illnesses have been reported and no other Fresh Express products are being recalled. Consumers who still have these products in their refrigerators are advised to discard them immediately.

The storm which hit the region Sunday & Monday has claimed the lives of 4 New Yorkers so far. State Police said that an elderly woman in Catskill had her vehicle submerged in flood waters Monday, & she could not be reached by first responders due to the raging flood waters.

Local sales tax collections in New York state increased by 5.1% in November compared to the same month in 2022, according to State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. Overall, local collections totaled $1.81 billion, up $88.6 million compared to the same time last year. County and city collections outside of New York City totaled $887 million, an increase of 4.4%, 55 out of 57 counties experienced year-over-year increases.

Congressman Marc Molinaro’s constituent service team will hold mobile office hours from 12:00 noon to 2:00pm today at the Oneonta Town Hall. This comes after a home exploded in Oneonta December 9th, killing 1 person, injuring others, and damaging neighboring homes. Constituents will be able to connect with representatives from Congressman Molinaro’s office to get assistance with issues they are facing.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced $25 million in capital grants will be made available to help volunteer fire departments upgrade their facilities and equipment. The heavy rain has slowed down & is changing over to snow showers in some location this afternoon, local Meteorologist Rich Townsend told WCDO News that there could be some isolated minor flooding:

Delaware County DPW Commissioner Jim Thomas reported some roads were flooded earlier today, including State Route 357, which was closed between County Route 14 and State Route 28 in Franklin, also Flooding on State Route 10 slowed traffic between Peaks Brook Road in Delhi and County Route 16, 1 lane traffic was being directed by DOT flaggers, County Route 18 above Delhi & County Route 9 were also closed earlier this afternoon. The Otsego County Sheriff’s office announced road closures at Piermott Lane and Wileytown Road in the Town of Hartwick, County Highway 48 between Chamberlain Hill and Downey Road Spur in Otego, County Highway 4 between Mill Street and Hilton Street in the Town of Butternuts, County Highway 29 in the town of Springfield & Miller Road in the Town of Pittsfield. Following the October announcement of the closure of the Morris branch of Community Bank, N.A., in January, A public meeting, coordinated by Butternut Valley Alliance, was held November 20 to identify the greatest concerns, Maggie Brenner is Vice Chair of the Butternut Valley Alliance, she told WCDO News what options they can pursue for their banking:

Brenner said that the Community Bank closing in Morris affects several communities around Morris, and that there has been significant growth in the surrounding area the last couple of years, which they hope warrants a banking institution to set up some sort of bank or credit union locally, and not force everyone to go 20 miles or more to do all of their banking needs.

The Delaware County Toys for Tots Campaign collected 1300 Items and many Cash Donations, which will support Nearly 300 Delaware County Families and 600 Children this Christmas season. This year’s campaign was a joint effort from the Delaware County Chamber of Commerce & Delaware Opportunities, with collection boxes at over 20 businesses.

Chaquasja Veale of Norwich was indicted Friday & was charged with 2nd degree murder, for the killing of 44 year old Alisa Ann Martin in her Norwich home July 6th. Veale had been staying in Martin’s home, she died died by strangulation, Veale was being held on bail in the Chenango County Jail pending future court action.

The number of full-time local government workers employed outside of New York City shrank 7.9% from 2007 through 2022, according to a report by State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. New York’s decline in local government employment is in contrast to the nation, which saw a 2% increase in the number of full-time employees over this 15-year period. Local government workforce levels were most impacted by two key events during this time – the Great Recession of 2007-09 and the COVID-19 pandemic. School districts were the largest local government employer in 2022, Counties were second, followed by cities and villages and towns.
