Governor Kathy Hochul announced that applications are open for $500 million from the state Budget to bolster New York’s child care workforce through the Workforce Retention Grant Program. Funding will support approximately 150,000 direct child care staff through financial incentives ranging from $2,300 to $3,000 in retention and referral bonuses for existing staff as well as sign-on bonuses for new staff. Cooperstown Cheese Company based in Milford, New York announced a recall of over 1400 pounds of cheese, The recalled cheese was purchased, sold or distributed from June 21st to July 10th, They were distributed in New York State through farmers markets, restaurants and retail stores. All recalled products are labeled with Cooperstown Cheese Company labels which contain the company contact information. The FDA reported that the products were recalled due to a potential to be contaminated with Listeria.

Family Planning of South Central New York was awarded a $1.2 million dollar grant over 5 years for the Personal Responsibility Education Program. The New York State Department of Health funded initiative works to delay sexual activity, increase condom and contraceptive use, reduce teen pregnancy, and ensure adolescents have access to comprehensive reproductive medical care services. The Binghamton Black Bears announced an agreement to play at the Visions Veterans Memorial Arena through the 2026 season, The Black Bears set a Federal Prospects Hockey League record in attendance with 107,000 fans over the course of the 2022-2023 season. A raccoon in the Town of Kortright has tested positive for rabies. This is the third animal in Delaware County to test positive for rabies in 2023. One person was exposed to the rabid raccoon and has begun Rabies Post-Exposure Prophylaxis. No domestic animals were exposed to the rabid raccoon. Public Health recommends that pet owners take advantage of any of the free remaining rabies clinics for cats, dogs, and ferrets in Delaware County.

The State Department of Labor announced that the number of private sector jobs increased over the month by 15,000, or 0.2%, to 8,260,000 in June. The State’s unemployment rate held constant at 3.9% in June, the labor force participation rate increased to 61.2%.

Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar announced the release of a new, free smartphone application developed specifically to help Broome County residents and visitors better connect with the Sheriff’s Office and improve communication and transparency between the law enforcement agency and the community overall. Users will also be able to submit crime tips, access the Most Wanted List and Sex Offender Registry, and provide direct feedback on interactions with Sheriff’s Office deputies via the Compliments & Concerns feature. Fire fighters from Sidney, Unadilla, Bainbridge, Masonville & Trout Creek, responded to the report of a Tractor Trailer fire at about 4:30 this morning on I-88 in Sidney. I-88 Eastbound was closed down for firefighting & clean up, The driver was not injured, the tractor was carrying a load of wood pellets, no injuries among fire fighters were reported.

State Department of Transportation is advising motorists that traffic along a portion of State Route 80, approximately four miles north of the Village of Cooperstown will be reduced to one lane with alternating traffic controlled by temporary signals until further notice. The road sustained heavy damage from last weekend’s storms. Crews hope to have the situation repaired before this weekend’s influx of travelers to Cooperstown for the Hall of Fame Induction weekend.

29 year old Danielle Migdal of Norwich has been identified as the person who died in a 2 vehicle accident in the Town of Davenport July 6th. Migdal was a passenger in a vehicle on County Highway 10, that entered the intersection of State Route 23, & was struck by a pick up truck, the accident is still under investigation.

The Delaware County Chamber of Commerce will host a New York 19th Congressional Candidate Forum with Republican candidate Marcus Molinaro and Democratic candidate Patrick Ryan. Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested Jose Juarez-Garrido of New Jersey after Deputies observed a vehicle traveling at 50 mph in a posted 30 mph zone in the Village of Walton Wednesday Morning. Deputies charged Juarez-Garrido with DWI and Driving with BAC of .08% or more, Speeding, & Unlicensed Operator, he was released on appearance tickets and is scheduled to appear in Village of Walton Court at a later date.

Funeral Services were held this morning in Utica, for long time area Congressman Sherwood Boehlert.  Boehlert served as the Oneida County Executive before running for Congress, where he served for 24 years before retiring in 2006.  Boehlert is survived by his wife Marianne, 4 children, and 6 grandchildren, Boehlert was 84.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to Thursday Betty Brook Road in the Town of Kortright to investigate a complaint of property damage reportedly caused by cattle.  The Investigation revealed that loose cattle owned by 60-year-old Joseph Wyble, Jr., had caused damage to victim’s lawn on that day and at least 3 previous occasions.  On Friday, Deputies located and arrested Wyble and charged him with criminal mischief for recklessly causing damage to the property of another after having been previously warned by Deputies.  Wyble was issued an appearance ticket directing him to appear in the Town of Kortright Court on a later date to answer that charge.

41 year old Jeremie Hoyt of Davenport appeared in federal court last week on charges that he sexually exploited a child.  Hoyt is accused of producing a sexually explicit photograph and video of a 14-year-old child, and distributing the image and video on the Internet to other users on a messaging application.  Hoyt was ordered to be held pending a trial, if convicted, Hoyt faces a mandatory minimum term of imprisonment of 15 years and a maximum term of imprisonment of 30 years, a maximum fine of $250,000, and a term of supervised release of between 5 years and life.

Otsego County Department of Health reported its 69th death last week, with 115 active cases and 4 people hospitalized.  The 7-day rolling average positive rate was 2.8%.

The State Health Department reported over 180,000 COVID tests were reported Saturday, with over 4300 positive tests, a positivity rate now down to 2.39%.  Hospitalizations were down to about 2300, patients in ICU beds declined to 548 & patients on ventilators are down to 317, there were 31 deaths & 55,911 Vaccine Doses were administered Saturday.

Delaware County reported 46 new COVID cases Thursday & Friday, with a positivity rate over 9%, they reported 185 active cases, 363 quarantined 7 hospitalized & 54 deaths.  Just over 50% of Delaware County residents are vaccinated, while 77% of positive cases were unvaccinated.  25% of the cases are school aged children & school district employees.

Chenango County Sheriff’s Office announced that 13 year old Charlotte Heier of the Town of Smithville has been located successfully.  The Office announced this morning that Charlotte was located in good health, & they thanked the public for help with the successful investigation.

State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli, Cortland County DA’s office and State Police announced that former Pharsalia Town Supervisor Dennis Brown was sentenced to serve 2 to 3 years in a state prison. Brown pleaded guilty for 2nd degree Grand Larceny, for stealing $240,000 in public funds, he was ordered to pay $240,000, and he has already paid $125,000.  Brown charged personal items on the town’s credit card to pay for groceries, vacations, clothes, jewelry, home utilities, and work on his property.

State Police have arrested 7 people linked to a crime spree across 4 local counties.  In July, State Police arrested Christopher Youngs of the town of Maryland & John Clark of Morris in connection with multiple burglaries in Otsego, Delaware, Chenango and Madison counties.  State Police Investigators have lodged additional charges against Youngs and Clark, & they have also arrested 32 year old Joseph Santiago of Burlington Flats, 32 year old Charles Hall of Edmeston, 23 year old Kayla Van Pelt of Edmeston, 59 year old Henry Schmidt of Garratsville, 56 year old Samuel Madero of Morris, All 7 have been linked to over 40 cases between the State Police, local Sheriff’s departments and local police departments.  More charges are likely as investigators continue to work through the open cases.

Chenango County Public Health announced their latest COVID 19 numbers today, with 83 Active Cases, 20 of them are vaccinated cases, 175 are Quarantined, there are 3 hospitalized, 2 of those are vaccinated.  Chenango County has had 4046 cases of COVID with over 3800 recoveries & 82 deaths.

Hartwick College President Margaret Drugovich announced her Plans to Retire Sometime next summer.  Drugovich has led Hartwick College for 13 years, she received national news coverage for her program for an accelerated 3 Year Degree program; plus the development of 6 new undergraduate majors, a graduate-level program in Translational Biomedical Research Management, and soon, its Master of Science in Nursing Education and a Certificate of Advanced Study in Nursing Education and the development of Hartwick’s Center for Craft Food & Beverage program. The College’s Board of Trustees has initiated a formal search to choose Hartwick’s 11th president.

State Police arrested 22 year old Jessica Winans of Unadilla for the felony Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a motor vehicle as well as Driving While Intoxicated, following an accident on September 6th.  Troopers were dispatched to a report of a vehicle that struck a tree on Plankenhorn Road in the town of Sidney.  Winans was the only person in the vehicle, she was transported to Wilson Hospital in Johnson City for the treatment of injuries to the face & ankle, and she was issued appearance tickets to the Sidney Town Court on September 23rd.

On the 20th anniversary of 9/11, Governor Kathy Hochul has proposed legislation that would allow National Guard members to qualify as veterans under New York State law. Governor Hochul has also issued a Citation honoring members of the New York National Guard for their service during and after the events 9/11.  Over 6,700 New York State National Guard members were called to serve in response to and recovery from the attack on September 11th 2001.

Governor Kathy Hochul today updated New Yorkers on the state’s progress combating COVID-19.  Over 179,000 Test Results were Reported Saturday, the positivity rate has stayed steady at about 3% with over 5400 Positives, Patient Hospitalization decreased by 47 to 2,367, ICU patients remained at 519, the number on Ventilators decreased by 9 to 267, there were 29 Deaths reported.

Governor Cuomo announced that over 55,300 people were tested for COVID on Sunday, with only 290 positives, of .5% of all tested.  Hospitalization, ICU Patients & Patients on Ventilators continues to trend downward, there were 3 deaths attributed to the virus Sunday; one of those was in Chenango County.  Just fewer than 72% of New Yorkers have had at least 1 Vaccination, 65% have completed the series of shots.

A New Jersey fugitive was arrested June 19th by Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies following an incident in the Town of Colchester.  Deputies responded to a report of a vehicle in the East Branch Delaware River near the Corbett bridge, the Investigation revealed that a New Jersey couple were attempting to drive their pickup across the river when it became partially submerged and disabled in deep water, also a passenger, 30 year-old Brian Olin, of New Jersey was wanted by authorities in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, on an outstanding warrant for failure to appear in court on a felony drug charge in September, 2019.  Olin was charged with being a fugitive from justice and was later arraigned and remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility without bail pending his extradition by New Jersey.

The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum announced that Josh Rawitch has been named President; he will begin serving in that capacity on September 9th.  Jeff Idelson will continue in his current role as Interim President until September 9th.  Rawitch was the Arizona Diamondbacks Senior Vice President of Content and Communications for the past 6 years; he previously served for 15 years as part of the Los Angeles Dodgers’ front office.

Attorney General Letitia James announced an agreement with Johnson & Johnson that will deliver up to $230 million to New York state, it resolves claims made by James for the company’s role in helping to fuel the opioid epidemic and would allocate payments over 9 years, it also requires J&J to pay $30 million more in payments in the first year if the Governor signs into law new legislation that creates an opioid settlement fund, and other criteria are met.

Otsego County Sheriff’s deputies arrested 36 year old Thomas Palmatier of South New Berlin, for Fleeing an Officer in Motor Vehicle, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation, Unregistered Vehicle & several other similar charges, following a recent traffic stop in the Town of Pittsfield.   Palmatier allegedly drove off from the traffic stop while emergency lights were activated; he was issued appearance ticket returnable to the Town of Pittsfield Court at a later date.

Otsego County Sheriff Deputies arrested 48 year old Brett Brooks of New Berlin after providing Deputy’s with false information of his identity in the Town of Pittsfield on June 13th.  Brooks was a passenger in a vehicle that had been stopped; he had an active bench warrant issued out of Chenango County & gave a false name to law enforcement. Brooks was issued an appearance ticket returnable to the Town of Pittsfield Court & was turned over to the custody of Chenango County Sheriff Office for the warrant.

State Police arrested 44 year old Scott Mawhiney of Deposit for 1st degree attempted murder, following the shooting of Trooper Ryan Thorpe last night in Deposit. Troopers responded to a domestic dispute after 9:00 Last night on Sunrise Terrace, Trooper Thorpe was taken to Wilson Hospital in Johnson City, where he recovering form emergency Surgery, Mawhiney was taken into custody & was remanded to the Broome County Jail without bail, the investigation is continuing.

NYSEG announced that their crews have successfully restore power to over 9000 Delaware County Customers who lost power this morning.   About 1/3rd of Delaware County customers were without power in the middle & eastern townships, several school districts had to delay scheduled activities this morning due to the outage.  NYSEG Officials told WCDO News that the issue was a failed insulator at the Delhi Substation, power was out from about 5:30 this morning until about 12:00 Noon.

Otsego County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 26 year old David Johnson of Norwich following the investigation of a motor vehicle accident in the Town of Pittsfield on June 16TH.  Johnson was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Criminal Possession of a Weapon, DWI, Driving while Ability Impaired by Drugs & Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a motor vehicle, among several other charges, Johnson is accused of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of methamphetamine, he was taken to Bassett Medical Center for injuries sustained during the accident, he was processed & issued an appearance ticket for Pittsfield Court at a later date.

Chenango County Public Health reported that they now have no hospitalizations from the COVID 19 virus.  They are down to 10 active cases, 28 Quarantines, with 3325 recoveries, 3507 total cases & 77 deaths since the pandemic begin last year.

The DICK’S Sporting Goods Open will be held next week, June 28th through July 4th this year, organizer Dave Pessagno told WCDO News that they had to keep the numbers down when scheduling this event earlier this year:

Pessagno said that they are hoping to get back to normal attendance numbers of about 25,000 peak during the 2022 Dick’s Sporting Goods Open festivities in Endicott.

Governor Cuomo announced that New York will end the state disaster emergency declared on March 7, 2020 to fight COVID-19 today. Federal CDC guidance will remain in effect, which includes masks for unvaccinated individuals, as well as all riders on public transit and in certain settings, such as health care, nursing homes, correctional facilities, and homeless shelters. State and local government health departments will still be able to ensure mask rules and other health precautions are adhered to in those settings.

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 50 year old Susan Raczkowski of Milford following a wood shed fire June 17th that was deemed suspicious by the Milford Fire Department.   Raczkowski was charged with 4th-degree arson and criminal mischief; she was issued an appearance ticket and will return to court at a later date.
