On Wednesday, State Police Traffic Incident Management Unit issued a total of 25 tickets in Broome County during an “Operation Hard Hat” detail. Troopers monitored traffic on State Route 17 in the town of Sanford where road crews were doing bridge work. Of the 25 tickets issued, 9 were for speeding, 6 for seatbelt violations & the rest for a variety of offenses.

Broome County Sheriff’s Deputies responded Monday in the Town of Fenton for a Burglary complaint. The homeowner had found an unknown man in a 2nd floor room around 1:30 AM, the intruder left on foot, a laptop computer and several other electronics were missing from his residence, a downstairs window was left ajar with the screen ripped out. Deputies apprehended an individual with the stolen items in a drawstring bag, 24 year old Mitchell Paul of Binghamton, was charged with Burglary, Grand Larceny, Criminal Possession of Stolen Property & Criminal Mischief, he was taken to Central Arraignment and is currently being held at the Broome County Correctional Facility. Later that morning Deputies responded to a separate Burglary complaint in the Town of Fenton, where various items were stolen, they discovered that those items were in Mitchell Paul’s drawstring bag, he was additionally charged with Burglary.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 68 year old Peter Maguire of East Meredith following a trespass investigation in Walton. On August 11th, Deputies responded to a report of a male entering onto and trespassing on several properties in the Village of Walton. After the investigation, the Village of Walton Court issued a criminal summons to Maguire for trespassing, he was arrested September 10th he was released and was ordered to appear in Walton Village Court at a later date..

State Police arrested 2 Pennsylvania residents following a drug bust in Chenango County that seized thousands of dollars’ worth of drugs. 28 year old Jordan Melendez and 24 year old Kimberly Rivas were arrested Thursday following the execution of search warrants at multiple locations in Chenango County. Police seized 1.5 pounds of Crystal Meth, pure Fentanyl, 20 pounds of marihuana, 4 handguns, 16 illegally possessed long guns Scales, Packaging materials & $3,350.00 in cash. Melendez & Rivas were charged with Criminal possession of a controlled substance & were arraigned in the Town of Norwich Court and remanded to Chenango County Jail with no bail. Sunday night, the Deposit Fire Department and Eastern Broome Emergency Services were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident where the vehicle involved had gone into a creek in the Town of Sanford. Daylight Saving Time ends on Sunday at 2:00 AM, as clocks will be turned back one hour. The move means that it will get dark an hour earlier at 5:19 PM Sunday, Standard time will be used through March 8th 2020 when clocks will “spring” forward an hour to begin Daylight Saving Time.

Delaware County Sheriff Craig DuMond announced the acquisition and implementation of a new K9 Deputy and K9 Handler to the Sheriff’s Department. K9 “Eli”, is a 2-year-old German Shepherd from Hungary who was acquired from Shallow Creek Kennels in Pennsylvania. 47-year-old Andrew Menke has died following a Saturday Afternoon Fire in his 3rd Floor Apartment above the Little Venice Restaurant in Binghamton over the weekend. Menke was discovered in the hallway at 111 Chenango Street, he was taken to Wilson Medical Center, and He was moved to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse. Fire damage was confined to the third-floor apartment where the blaze originated. The restaurant sustained some water damage, but was able to re-open Sunday. The investigation is continuing.

Oneonta Authorities had to close Main Street this morning near Fox Hospital, for a reported Natural Gas leak. The State Senate passed a bill that eliminates the criminal penalties for possessing small amounts of marijuana, but fines may still be applied up to $50 for 1 ounce or less, or $200 for between 1 & 2 ounces. The State Assembly voted to pass the measure early this morning; Governor Cuomo is expected to sign it. Lawmakers could not get enough votes to make recreational marijuana legal.

2 Norwich residents were arrested by the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office for Criminal Trespass, Theft of Services, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance and Unlawful Possession of Marihuana. Deputies arrested 32 year old Scott Russell & 22 year old Brooklyn Stout after a complaint from the Norwich Inn, both are accused of using a stolen motel key to enter one of the motel rooms, they stayed the night and did not pay for the room. State Police arrested 39 year old Dustin Hendricks of Milford for Criminal Contempt & Menacing, after Troopers were called to a dispute at a residence on State Route 28 in the town of Hartwick. Hendrick’s actions violated an order of protection, which was already in place, he was arraigned in the town of Hartwick Court where he was remanded to the Otsego County Jail in lieu of $5,000 cash bail or $10,000 property bond. His next court date is December 12th.

State Police arrested 29 year old Nicholas Reyes of Guilford for Aggravated Unlicensed Operation, Driving While Intoxicated & Refusal to Submit to a Breath Test. Troopers responded to a one car rollover on County Road 38 in the town of Guilford. An investigation revealed that the vehicle Reyes was operating veered over the double yellow lines then back into his lane before going off the roadway, striking a ditch and rolling over. State Police CNET arrested 36 year old Matthew Mazepa of Harpursville, in the City of Binghamton on active felony bench warrants from Chenango County Court. Mazepa was found to be in possession of an assault rifle, crystal methamphetamine, cocaine, crack cocaine, marihuana, ammunition and drug paraphernalia. Mazepa was charged with Criminal Possession Controlled Substance, Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Tampering with physical evidence, Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia & Resisting Arrest, he was arraigned and remanded to the Broome County Jail without bail.

State Police arrested a 21-year-old man following a domestic incident. Joshua Backus of Greene was charged with 2nd degree Burglary, Criminal Possession of a Stimulant, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, 4 counts of Menacing and Harassment and Unlawful Possession of Marihuana. Troopers were called to a residence in the Town of Oxford to investigate a domestic dispute; Backus pushed 2 subjects and threatened them with a hammer, pointed a gun at them and attempted to hit them with his vehicle. Troopers observed Backus drive by the residence, he was arrested, arraigned and was remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $40,000 cash bail or $80,000 bond pending Grand Jury action on April 18th.

State Police announced that an Otsego County teen reported missing since July 28th, has been found. 16 year old Alyssa Jones was located Thursday in Oneonta. Jones was reported missing after she attended a Laurens Music festival July 28th & did not return home, the investigation is ongoing.

Governor Cuomo today announced that $60.7 million in grants, in addition to interest-free and low-cost loans, have been approved by the State Environmental Facilities Corporation Board to support drinking water and wastewater projects across the state. The Town of Roxbury will get a $1 million low-interest loan for source, pumping, distribution, storage and treatment improvements, which includes new and upgraded controls, electrical systems, backup power and chemical feed systems; replacement of old valves, hydrants, undersized water mains and a new storage tank mixing system and rehabilitation of the storage tank.

Norwich Police have arrested 2 people following an investigation of heroin sales. On Thursday, Norwich police arrested 34 year old Bryan Petry of Norwich for Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance and Criminal Nuisance, and 34 year old Tiffany Walsh of Norwich for Criminal Nuisance. Both were arraigned in Norwich City Court and remanded to the Chenango County Jail, Petry’s bail is set at $10,000. Walsh’s bail is set at $5,000. They are scheduled to reappear in the Norwich City Court shortly.

Chenango County Sherriff’s Department arrested 35 year old Misty Mojica of New Berlin for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, after a traffic stop on State Route 12 in the Town of Norwich. Mojica is accused of possessing a controlled substance & items related to manufacturing methamphetamine were located within the vehicle. The Broome County Sheriff’s Office arrested 17 year old Jason Terkowski of Harpursville and 17 year old Kyle Grose of Harpursville for 2nd degree Burglary. Both are accused of unlawfully entering a residence in the Town of Colesville last month and stealing property, which has been recovered. Terkowski and Grose were arraigned in the Town of Colesville Court and released on their own recognizance to appear in court on a later date.

State Police responded to a 2 vehicle crash on State Route 7 in the town of Unadilla. An investigation determined that 92 year old Joseph Norton of Sidney was driving a Chevrolet Impala, eastbound on State Route 7 when he entered a sharp curve in the roadway and drifted into the westbound lane & struck a dump truck driven by 38 year old Jeffrey Haynes of Sidney head on. Norton was deceased at the scene. Haynes was airlifted to Albany Medical Center and was listed in critical condition. Haynes passenger, 40 year old Jackie Ryan of Mt. Upton was transported to Wilson Hospital and is in stable condition. An autopsy will be conducted at Lourdes hospital, the investigation is ongoing.

27-year-old Kyle Ives of Oneonta was charged with reckless endangerment, unlawfully fleeing police in a motor vehicle, resisting arrest, reckless driving, aggravated unlicensed operation and unlawful possession of marijuana, Monday following a high-speed car chase from Oneonta to Milford. Oneonta Police had stopped Ives on Spruce Street; Ives fled, and was chased by police onto I-88, the pursuit ended when Ives crashed into Guide rails on Otsego County route 44 in Milford. Ives was taken to Bassett Hospital, there were no other injuries or vehicles involved.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 27-year-old Frank Mastrorocco and 23-year-old Misty Jackson on of Walton drug possession charges last Thursday afternoon, July 27. Both were charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance (heroin) and Criminally Possessing a Hypodermic Instrument. Jackson was also charged with Unlawful Possession of Marijuana. Mastrorocco was under the supervision of the New York State Division of Parole, & was arrested on a Parole Revocation Warrant. Mastrorocco and Jackson were arraigned & were remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility in lieu of $2,000.00 cash bail pending further action by the Village of Walton Court.

Delaware County Sheriff Deputies responded Sunday afternoon in the Town of Walton in relation to a reported violation of an order of protection. Deputies arrested and charged 56-year-old Edward Steitz of Walton with Criminal Contempt, Steitz violated the “stay away” provisions of an Order of Protection issued by Delaware County Family Court Judge Gary A. Rosa. Steitz was arraigned in the Town of Hamden Court & was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional facility on $1,500 cash bail pending a future appearance in the Town of Walton Court.

Governor Cuomo announced that 26 state-approved Child Advocacy Centers will share more than $4 million to enhance services provided to children who are victims of crime. The centers are located across New York State and will use the funding to offset the cost of purchasing and installing video recording equipment, as well as hiring specially trained staff to interview young victims of sexual and physical abuse. The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 28-year-old Justin Harrington of Sherburne, for Sexual Abuse, endangering the welfare of a child, and forcible touching. Harrington allegedly subjected a victim under the age of 13 to sexual contact on multiple occasions. He was arraigned in the Town of Sherburne Court and taken to the Chenango County Jail on $10,000 bail.

Ithaca Police have arrested 38 year old Justin Barkley for 2nd degree murder for allegedly shooting 52-year-old William Schumacher. Police were called to the Ithaca Wal-Mart around 12:50 AM Thursday, where they found Schumacher dead at the scene. Officers tried to pull over the suspect vehicle along State Route 13 a short time later, the suspect took off and turned into the driveway, he fired a shot in the direction of police officers before running into the residence. Barkley is being held in the Tompkins County Jail on no bail. He will reappear in Ithaca City Court on December 14th.

Sanders was arrested in April in Binghamton by State Police, possessing about $12,000 worth of heroin for sale. 28-year-old Jennifer Morris of East Branch pleaded guilty to a felony charge of falsely reporting an incident. Morris will serve 6 months in Delaware County jail followed by 5 years probation orders of protection were issued for all victims named in the indictment filed against Morris. Morris was arrested following a series of threats made on Facebook against people associated with the Walton Central School district.
