State Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker has recommended new emergency measures to contain the coronavirus cluster of 108 people in New Rochelle. The protocols include closing schools, houses of worship and other large gathering facilities for a 2 weeks, Governor Cuomo has deployed National Guard troops to deliver food to homes and help with cleaning public spaces in the containment area. The Governor confirmed 31 additional cases of the Coronavirus, bringing the statewide total to 173.

Orlando Tercero will remain in a Nicaraguan prison for 30 years, after a Nicaraguan judge made that decision yesterday. Tercero was convicted in Nicaragua for Haley Anderson’s death in Binghamton in March 2018. Tercero killed Anderson in his Oak Street apartment, fled to Nicaragua to avoid prosecution.

]]>65-year-old Ramadan Abdullah of Johnson City was sentenced to a minimum of three years in state prison in Broome County Court Thursday; he was found guilty in November of 15 counts of criminal possession of a weapon and 1 count of petit larceny. At the time of Abdullah’s arrest, police seized handguns, assault weapons, rifles, and a shotgun, thousands of rounds of ammunition, flak jackets and high-capacity ammunition feeding devices.

Governor Cuomo today directed State Department of Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker to authorize emergency assistance funding to counties as flu diagnoses continued to increase in communities across the state. With 15,753 laboratory confirmed influenza cases reported to the New York State Department of Health, and 2,349 New Yorkers hospitalized with confirmed influenza, these numbers are again the highest weekly numbers in both categories since reporting began in 2004. Delaware County Sheriff Deputies arrested 57-year-old Calvin Wank of Deposit on 1 count of unlawful possession of marijuana, and 2 counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance. Deputies accuse Wank of possessing Cocaine, marijuana & Methamphetamine. Wank was arraigned at Deposit Town Court and was remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $1000 bail.

The gathering will be held today at the Atlanta headquarters of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There is increasing evidence that Zika is linked to a birth defect, in the developing fetuses of infected mothers. The State Plan includes distributing 100,000 larvicide tablets to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds; aggressively monitoring the mosquito population through trapping and testing; providing free Zika protection kits to pregnant women; deploying Rapid Response Teams wherever local mosquito transmission is confirmed; issuing emergency regulations requiring local Zika Action Plans; and launching a broad public awareness campaign.

Governor Cuomo today announced a 6-step plan to combat the transmission of the Zika Virus. State Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker explains:

The plan calls for distributing larvicide tablets to residents in the potentially Zika affected area, providing Zika protection kits to pregnant women, launching a statewide public awareness campaign, and assembling a rapid response team in the event of confirmed infection by an Aedes mosquito. The type of Aedes mosquito that is active in New York is not yet confirmed to be able to transmit the Zika virus, but the possibility remains.

A New York state missing vulnerable adult alert has been issued out of Tompkins county, 81 year old David Sprague has been reported missing, since Thursday afternoon. He is described as white male, 5’11”, 157 pounds, he was last seen at about 2:30 PM Thursday in Ithaca, driving a brown Buick Lacrosse with license plate number 182-ACL. Sprague suffers from dementia and has medical issues, anyone with information is asked to call 272-2444 or 911.

New York State remains free of any Ebola cases and the State Department of Health continues to monitor and screen health care workers and others traveling from Ebola-affected countries. Individuals may be monitored or quarantined for 21 days, depending on their contact history with Ebola. Anyone that has symptoms consistent with Ebola virus will be immediately transported to a specially designated hospital and tested. G-MU graduate Corin Todd of Otego has been selected to compete in the 2015 ESPN X-Games in Aspen, Colorado from January 22-25. Todd is a professional snocross rider for Leighton Motorsports, competing in the U.S. and Canada.
