The Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force executed a search warrant Friday in Windsor, officer seized Methamphetamines, Fentanyl, weapons & drug paraphernalia.  Police arrested Shawn McCabe of Windsor on a variety of Weapons & Drug Charges, he was being held at the Broome County Sheriff’s Correctional Facility pending arraignment.

Norwich city police are looking for a suspect in a stabbing in downtown Norwich Sunday evening.  Norwich Police said that a pedestrian was walking near American Avenue in downtown Norwich at about 5:25 PM, & was stabbed several times in the neck & chest during the robbery near American Avenue.  The victim was taken to Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City; Norwich Police officers are asking anyone with information about the attack to call them at 336-8477.  The Suspect is described as a White Male with a red backpack, wearing a Baseball cap, line at 607-336-8477.

Governor Cuomo today announced a new streamlined application process for the rent relief program to help eliminate potential barriers to funding. The new process relaxes documentation standards for both tenants and landlords and implements a streamlined process for submission of arrears documentation for multi-tenant landlords effective Tuesday.   The State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance will administer the program.

Bainbridge Fire Fighters responded to a car fire at the Mirabito’s Saturday afternoon.  Firefighters found a Kia from North Carolina fully involved, the occupants were out of the vehicle & no injuries were reported.

The State HEAP Cooling Assistance Program, which provides up to an $800 benefit to purchase and install an air conditioner or a fan, will be open until August 31st.   To apply, households must contact their local social services Department; more information is available at otda.ny.gov/programs/heap/.

A.M. NEWS Monday 7-26-21

State Police arrested 29 year old Anthony Masi of Sidney for Criminal Possession of Stolen Property.  Masi was the driver of a motorcycle that crashed into an SUV near the intersection of State Highway 28 and the Lettis Highway on July 4th in Oneonta,  Masi was taken to Albany Medical Center, the other driver was not injured.  An investigation determined that the motorcycle was stolen.  Masi was charged by the Village of Sidney Police on July 19, he was turned over to the State Police. Masi was transported to Otsego County Central Arraignment and Processing.  He was remanded to the Otsego County Jail on $10,000 cash or $20,000 property bond.

Otsego County Sheriff’s Office responded to a commercial bus fire earlierSaturday on State Route 28 in the Town of Otsego.  The bus passengers were heading to a wedding when the fire broke out.  No injuries are reported, the bus suffered substantial damage and was towed from the scene.  The Cooperstown and Hartwick Seminary Fire Departments responded, with Assistance by the Cooperstown Police Department and the State Police.

State Police responded to a report of a fatal skydiving incident in the area of County Highway 34 in the town of Westford.   A preliminary investigation revealed that 59 year old Karen Bernard of Wildwood, Florida jumped out of a plane to skydive when it appears she had a malfunction with her parachute,  the investigation continues.

State Police arrested 21 year old Noah Bascom of Hamilton for 3rd degree Assault and Overdriving, Torturing and injuring an Animal.  Bascom allegedly repeatedly struck a small dog with a wooden dowel.  He was also accused of striking a person in the face, causing injury.  The victim was taken to Community Hospital by a third party and received treatment.   Bascom was located at his residence in Hamilton and arrested.  He was released on an appearance ticket to the Earlville Village Court on August 11th.

Governor Cuomo announced that 4 mass vaccination sites will cease operations as part of the ongoing downscaling that will allow the State to focus on localized vaccination efforts. As part of the downscaling, the site at Binghamton University will cease operations following vaccinations TODAY.

The Bainbridge Fire Department responded to State Highway 7 for the report of a Single Engine Plane Crash last night.  The plane was tangled up in wires, & the person was able to get out of the plane. More information is expected to be released later today.

For the second straight year, Brooklyn-based Threes Brewing took home top honors, winning the Governor’s Excelsior Cup. Broome County Sheriff’s Office arrested 22-year-old Brandon Cole of Sidney on a number of charges early this morning.  Deputies observed Cole driving Bevier Street at a high rate of speed, running a red light, and eventually he struck a guide rail in the parking lot of the Expressmart on Old Front Street.  Cole was charged with Aggravated DWI, with BAC .18% or greater, Unreasonable and imprudent speed, Failure to maintain lane, Open container in a motor vehicle, as well as other charges, he will appear in the town of Dickinson court at a later date.

Chenango county sheriff’s deputies arrested 2 Madison County residents on a variety of charges Monday in Sherburne.  20-year-old Trever Scheckler of Hamilton was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Speeding, Improper Passing, and Reckless Driving.  Also charged was Scheckler’s passenger, 20-year-old Cody Smith, for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, and Unlawful Possession of Marihuana.  Both will appear in Sherburne town court at a later date.

Governor Cuomo today announced that $1.2 million in job training grants is still available to businesses that hire long-term unemployed New Yorkers. The campaign helps individuals who have been out of work for 26 weeks or longer, by connecting them to available regional jobs.  600 businesses have taken advantage of about $8.2 million in training incentives & have  hired more than 1,200 individuals. The Sidney Central Schools announced the start of their after school enrichment program on October 22nd.  The model for this program is similar to the model used for the summer camps.  Programs such as Robotics, Math & Music, Guitar Lessons, Zumba, and many others, for students in grades 1through 8.  The programs will run in 5-week increments and change each session, hours are from 2:55 to 4:10 pm on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.  More information is available at the Sidney Elementary School  at 561-7701.

Fundraising efforts are underway for former tri-town area resident William Hurtubise, who traveled to India for work from Texas, he forgot to check his bag before leaving the states, and carried 8 rounds of .22 caliber ammunition into India.  Hurtibise was arrested on September 18th and taken into custody; family & friends in the area are trying to raise funds in the amount of $75,000 for legal expenses in order to obtain his release.  Details & fundraising can be found online at giveforward.com.

State Police arrested 34-year-old Megan Holbrook of Laurens for driving while intoxicated. The arrest followed an investigation of an accident on Wilber Lake Road in Oneonta, Holbrook was issued tickets returnable to the town of Oneonta court on November 5th.

A reward is being offered by a private citizen, after a number of signs promoting town of Sidney Democratic candidates were vandalized recently.  Ray Lewis of Sidney Center said that he is putting up a $1,000 reward:

State police are investigating the report of a fatality on the railroad tracks in Otego.  The incident occurred at around 6:00 PM Wednesday evening; WCDO will have more details as they become available.

State troopers issued 1,489 tickets in Troop “C” for violations of the state’s mandatory seatbelt laws, including 51 child restraint violations, during the recent two-week Buckle Up New York campaign.  The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that seatbelts alone reduce the risk of fatal injuries by 45% for front seat passenger car occupants – and by 60% for pickup truck, SUV, and van occupants.  During the 2-week initiative, troopers made 39 DWI arrests, ticketed 689 drivers for speeding, and issued 145 distracted driver tickets.

State Troopers arrested 23-year-old Alexander Throssell, of East Meredith for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Possession of a Hypodermic Instrument and Unlawful Possession of Marihuana. The arrest was the result of a traffic stop in the Town of Stamford; Throssell was issued an Appearance Ticket returnable to the Town of Stamford Court on June 11th.

Governor Cuomo released the Upstate New York Gaming Economic Development Act, which will establish 3 destination resorts with gaming Upstate, to boost tourism and economic development in the region. The Resorts will be selected only on merit by the gaming commission or a separate board, none of the Resort will be authorized in New York City until a minimum of 5 years after the first upstate Resort opens.  The legislation can be viewed at governor.ny.gov.

The Broome County’s Special Investigations Unit arrested 29 year old Susan Smith of Binghamton on 1 count of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance.  Smith is accused of possessing 20 envelopes containing heroin, marijuana, and more $7,000 in cash in her apartment.  Smith faces court action shortly.

State Senator Jim Seward announced final legislative approval of a bill he sponsored to increase the amounts of allowable loans under the emergency services loan fund. The bill will adjust the loan rates available to account for inflation and help departments with equipment purchases and other necessary upgrades. The program is financed by repayments to the fund, budget authority and a 911 surcharge on wireless telephone calls. Delaware County District Attorney Investigators issued a criminal summons to 40-year-old Jessica VanAlstyne of Delhi for 1st degree Offering a False Instrument for Filing and 5th degree Welfare Fraud.  VanAlstyne is accused of offering a document to the Department of Social Services with false information, and that she received an overpayment of $412 in benefits as the direct result of failing to provide her entire income.  VanAlstyne was taken into custody turned over to the State Police on unrelated charges.

State Troopers in Oneonta arrested 31-year-old Kristen Lawrence of Hamilton for Driving While Intoxicated.  The arrest resulted from a traffic stop on State Route 23 in Morris; Lawrence was issued tickets returnable in the Town of Morris Court.

State Police at Sidney arrested 24 Blake Pifer  of Columbus  for Unlawful Possession of Marihuana. The arrest resulted from a traffic stop on I-88 in Sidney.  Pifer was issued an Appearance Ticket returnable to the Town of Sidney on January 12, 2012.

Governor Cuomo unveiled a new “utility scorecard” to hold utilities accountable for power restorations after a significant outage using a quantitative assessment of electric utility performance, as part of the State’s efforts for more aggressive review and evaluation of utilities following Super storm Sandy. The proposed scorecard will be issued by the Public Service Commission for public review and comment to ensure the performance metrics are the most comprehensive and effective.  The scorecard follows last year’s response time by several utilities after the hurricane, which the governor took issue with.

Delaware County District Attorney Investigators and New York State Parole arrested John Tubbs Jr. of Walton on a warrant issued by New York State Division of Parole. Tubbs is a level 3-sex offender; he was turned over to the Delaware County Correctional Facility pending further action by Division of Parole.

State Police arrested 18-year-old Eric Green in Albany; he was taken into custody without incident.  Green was charged with 1st degree Aggravated assault on a police officer, and 1st degree Robbery he was arraigned this morning on the original charges, the investigation is continuing & more charges are anticipated.  Green is accused of stabbing Trooper Rodney Smith in the neck at the Empire State Plaza Sunday, after asking for directions.

The Chenango county sheriffs department arrested 24-year-old Dale Thompson on an active Bench Warrant issued out of the Village of Sherburne Court for failure to pay fines.  Thompson was previously charged for with criminal mischief, endangering the welfare of a child, and 2nd degree harassment, he was arraigned and was released on his own recognizance after paying his fines.

State Police at Sidney arrested 26-year-old Gregory Flanagan of Sidney for Unlawful Possession of Marihuana. The arrest resulted from a traffic stop on State Route 7 in Unadilla; Flanagan was issued an Appearance Ticket for Town of Unadilla Court on March 11th.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 22-year-old Talon Taltavall of Hamilton, on an active Bench Warrant issued by the Town of Sherburne Court, for a violation of probation or conditional discharge.   Taltavall was arrested in the Town of Norwich; he was arraigned in the Town of Sherburne Court & was remanded to the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office on $1,000.00 cash bail. Taltavall is scheduled to appear back in the Town of Sherburne Court at a later date.
