Otsego County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the Dollar General on State Highway 28 in Hartwick for the report of a vehicle running into a utility pole, where the driver fled the scene on foot. Deputies and Cooperstown Police located the driver , 40 year old Kevin Clapper of Fly Creek a short distance from the scene. Clapper was arrested and charged with Aggravated DWI; Leaving the scene of a property damage accident & Consuming alcohol in a motor vehicle among several other charges, He was issued appearance tickets to the Town of Hartwick Court at a later date.

Greater Oneonta Historical Society & Otsego 2000 are sponsoring a Walking Tour of downtown Oneonta on Saturday. The tour will focus on opportunities and threats in the Oneonta Downtown Historic District, which the State Preservation League has named to its bi-annual “7 To Save” list. State Police are looking for 2 people who scammed a clerk at the Owego Speedway October 5th, by engaging in a series of purchases including lottery tickets and Visa cards, stealing over $3,693 from the store. The incident occurred on October 5, and it is believed the pair conducted a similar scam in Johnson City earlier that evening. They may be operating a white Ford sedan. The Deposit Fire Department and Eastern Broome Emergency Services responded to a house fire in the Town of Sanford, Oquaga Lake Road was closed between Old Route 17 and Hanson Road. No injuries were reported, the structure sustained significant fire damage. Mutual aid was provided by fire fighters from Windsor, West Windsor, Harpursville, Ouaquaga and Afton.

Agriculture in New York state paid close to $1 billion in wages and produced roughly $3.3 billion in gross domestic product in 2021, according to a report by New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli. The sector has proved to be among the most resilient during the COVID-19 pandemic, losing just 1% of jobs in 2020 compared to the statewide annual employment loss of 8.7%. Both employment and wages in the farming sector grew in 2021 to reach new highs of 23,868 employees and $970.2 million in wages.

Broome County District Attorney Mike Korchak announced that 32 year old Amanda Hoyt of Binghamton, pleaded guilty to the felony offense of Attempted Burglary in the Second Degree. In January, Hoyt illegally entered a St. Charles Street apartment in the Village of Johnson City and struck the resident in the arm with a hammer causing injury. Hoyt is a Second Violent Felony Offender and will be sentenced to 5 years in state prison on November 15th.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a Fight-in-Progress Complaint in the Hamlet of Arkville on July 16th. Rolland Billadeau of Shandaken allegedly pushed and struck the victim, Billadeau was located on August 21st and was served with a criminal summons on the charge of Harassment in the Second Degree. Billadeau is scheduled to appear before the Town of Middletown Court at a later date to answer for the charge. Sheriff’s Deputies were assisted by members of the New York State Police.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service issued a public health alert for Perdue’s frozen ready-to-eat chicken breast tenders “gluten free”, They may be contaminated with small pieces of clear plastic and blue dye. The Election results have been tabulated; in the 19th Congressional District, special election, Pat Ryan appears to have defeated Republican Marcus Molinaro to fill the Congressional seat through the end of this year. 51st State Senate District, incumbent Republican Peter Oberacker won & will be on the ballot in November. In the 52nd State Senate District, Lea Webb won the Democratic party nomination, and will face Republican Rich David in November. In the 19th Congressional District, the Democratic Party Primary Josh Riley is the winner & he will appear on the Ballot in November for the term starting January 1st 2023.

The State Department of Health will be operating a COVID-19 vaccination clinic on the grounds of the Great New York State Fair in Syracuse during its entire 13-day run, beginning August 24. The clinic will be open from 10:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. every day of the fair, inside the Exposition Center. Access to the clinic is included with Fair admission. There is no charge for the vaccines or boosters.

Judge Joel Cohen has rejected an effort by New York’s Attorney General Letitia James to put the National Rifle Association out of business, but Judge Cohen will allow a lawsuit accusing top executives of illegally diverting millions of dollars from the powerful gun advocacy organization to proceed. Judge Cohen ruled that allegations of NRA officials misspending on personal trips, no-show contracts and other questionable expenditures can be addressed by fines and restitution, but those allegations do not warrant the elimination of the the NRA.

The United States Department of Justice announced 35-year-old Matthew Bormann of Sherburne was sentenced on Wednesday to 10 years in prison and 15 years of post-release supervision for possessing child pornography. Bormann had 3,500 images and video files of child porn on a phone that he was prohibited from using, he was also sentenced to a 10-month consecutive term of imprisonment for violating the conditions of his supervised release by committing new criminal conduct, failing to answer questions truthfully from his probation officer, and failing to successfully complete mental health and sex offender treatment.

The New York Department of State today announced Broome County and the municipalities of Binghamton, Colesville, Deposit and Sanford have received a total of $229,655 in state matching funds through the County-Wide Shared Services Initiative. During this fiscal year, the program is providing a 95% state match of taxpayer savings achieved through the implementation of new shared services. The shared services projects include the Centralized Upgrade of Safety Communications, also, The Village of Deposit also voted to dissolve its court & Police Department & will work with the Broome County Sheriff & Town of Sanford Court to ensure public safety.

The State Health Department reported declining numbers of COVID 19 positivity rates for Tuesday. Over 129,000 tests were conducted, with 2124 positives, for a positivity rate of 1.64%, hospitalizations were down to 1,832, with 310 ICU Patients & 166 on ventilators, there were 19 deaths in hospitals & nursing homes on Tuesday from the virus.

6 year old Trinity O’Connor of Sidney passed away Tuesday following a battle with cancer throughout her young life, Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 5:00 PM on Friday, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St. Sidney. A fundraiser for the O’Connor family will be held today by Gavin’s Pizza at Awestruck in the Sidney Industrial Park today until 9:00 PM, with 100% of food proceeds going to the family. There will be a Sidney Warrior Community Send Off with Firetrucks & a Motorcycles brigade beginning at 9:00 AM on Saturday, community members are invited to line the procession route from the CH Landers Funeral Chapel, up West Main Street, to Delaware Avenue & to the Old Amphenol Parking Lot. All Motorcycle Riders are welcome to take part in the “O’Connor Strong” Motorcycle ride to Earlville & back, following the community procession.

Broome County Health Department announced another 4 deaths from COVID 19 Thursday, bringing their total to 98, they have had 3522 cases since March, with 2825 recoveries, and almost 5200 people are being monitored.

Chenango County Public Health announced 9 more COVID 19 positive cases Thursday, they still have 48 active cases, 278 quarantines, & 6 hospitalized.  They report a total of 397 total cases since March, with 333 recoveries & 7 deaths.

Hartwick College reported two new cases of COVID-19 have been detected. There are 15 active cases on campus; the total number of cases detected on campus since August 1, 2020 is 36.

State Police is reminding people to be aware of when someone calls and requests payment in the form of gift cards.  Scammers will say you owe money to the IRS, Social Security, the U.S. Marshal’s Office or some other government entity.  The scammers will even use scare tactics and say there’s a family emergency.  Do not give out your personal information over the phone, do not allow someone to remotely connect to your computer, do not cash check you are not anticipating.
