Norwich will again be the site for the Annual Gus Macker 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament this weekend, with 400 teams participating on courts set up along East Main Street. The teams play in a round robin tournament with different classifications; it is sponsored by the Norwich Family YMCA.

The 41st Annual Unadilla Carnival of Sales will be held tomorrow, with many activities at the Community Field, at local businesses & at Yard Sales throughout the Village. The event is sponsored by the Unadilla Chamber of Commerce; more information is available at Unadilla chamber of commerce.org

The Delaware County Department of Public Works announced that they will begin Oil & Stone operations on many county roads Monday. Affected roads include county routes 41, 8, 36, 37, 3, 6 & 18 in that order. Oil & stone work will then continue in southern portions of the county on County Routes 17, 67, 20, 27 & 22, the project should take about 3 weeks to complete, weather permitting.

Chenango County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested a Town of North Norwich resident for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Criminal Using of Drug Paraphernalia and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. 53 year old Thomas Manwarren was charged Following a lengthy investigation into the sale and possession of methamphetamine in Chenango County, a search warrant was issued by Chenango County Court. Several packages of methamphetamine were seized from Manwarren’s residence, he was arraigned in the Town of North Norwich Court and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $50,000.00 cash bail.

Norwich Police arrested 34 year old Bryan Petry & 34 year old Tiffany Walsh of Norwich, Thursday, following an investigation into alleged Heroin sales in the city. Both were arraigned in Norwich City Court and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility. Petry’s bail is set at $10,000. Walsh’s bail is set at $5,000. They are scheduled to reappear in the Norwich City Court on July 11.

State Police & local law enforcement agencies, will increase patrols to crack down on drunk and drugged driving and other traffic infractions this 4th of July weekend. Troopers will conduct sobriety checkpoints, along with speeding and seat belt enforcement details, & they will also be looking for distracted motorists using their phones and other electronic devices while behind the wheel. Drivers should also remember to “move over” for stopped emergency and hazard vehicles stopped on the side of the road. State Police will also be targeting the illegal sale of alcohol to minors during the enforcement period from Saturday through midnight Tuesday, July 4th

Governor Cuomo announced that lane closures for road and bridge construction projects on New York highways will be suspended TODAY until 6:00 AM on Wednesday, July 5th, in order to accommodate travelers during the busy Independence Day holiday weekend. Some work may continue behind permanent concrete barriers or for emergency repairs.

The Delaware County Public Works Committee will host a public presentation on the proposed rebuild and relocation of the county highway garage. The Meeting will be held on July 12 at 7:00 PM at Delaware Academy in Delhi.

Governor Cuomo signed a bill Thursday, which prohibits low-level sex offenders from becoming drivers for ride-hailing companies Uber and Lyft. The state’s law allowing ride-sharing took effect Thursday, it initially blocked Level 2 and 3 sex offenders from driving for the companies, which allow passengers to summon drivers using smartphone apps. Earlier this month, the state legislature voted to expand the law to also block Level 1 Sex Offenders.

FIREWORKS OVER THE FAIRGROUNDS will be held Tuesday July 4th at the Chenango County Fairgrounds, in Norwich, with the Gates open at 3:00 PM & the music begins at 4:00 PM. Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies participated in an aggressive driving enforcement detail last Friday, funded through the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee, they arrested a Walton man in the Village of Franklin. Deputies observed & stopped a vehicle for following another vehicle too closely, they determined that 23-year-old Mark O’Neill of Walton was impaired by drugs; he was arrested and transported to the Village of Sidney Police Department where Deputies were assisted by a Sidney Police Department Drug Recognition Expert. O’Neill was charged with DWI, Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs and Following Too Closely. He was issued tickets directing him to appear in the Town of Franklin Court on June 25th.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a 911 report of a property damage accident Friday on State Highway 206 in the Town of Walton. Deputies learned that the operator of 1 vehicle, 51-year-old Edward Wheeler of Downsville was intoxicated. Wheeler was charged with DWI, Aggravated DWI and Driving Left of Pavement Markings. Wheeler is accused of having a BAC of higher than .18%; he was issued tickets for Town of Walton Court on July 22nd.

The Chenango Arts Council announced the launch of Norwich Preparatory Theater which is a workshop designed to prepare young adults, ages 8 to 18, for a career in the performing arts. Council CEO Diane Batson Smith comments:

Starting Thursday, the State DOT will begin a several week project to replace a culvert on North Main Street in the Village of New Berlin. Work will be done daily between 6 am and 6 pm with full-time lane closure between Academy Street and West/Genesee Streets. Traffic will be maintained with an extension of the existing signals and one-way alternating traffic. The project is scheduled to last through July 31st.

School district budget votes will be held tomorrow throughout the state, with many of the districts also voting on school board seats. Most of the area school district are proposing budgets that come in at or under the state’s 2% tax cap. Locally, Afton, Charlotte Valley, Edmeston, Franklin, Laurens, Milford, Norwich, Oxford Unadilla Valley, Unatego & Walton are asking residents to pass budgets with total spending more than 2% above last year.

State Police in Deposit arrested 21-year-old Onif Chamberlain of The Bronx, for Unlawful Possession of Marijuana. Also arrested was 20-year-old Gregory Ewer of The Bronx for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance. The arrests resulted from a traffic stop on State Route 17 in Hancock; both subjects were issued Appearance Tickets returnable to the Village of Hancock Court on May 22^nd.

State Police at Oneonta arrested 20-year-old John Rundblad Jr., of Worcester for Driving While Intoxicated with a BAC result of .13%. The arrest resulted from a traffic accident in Westford; Rundblad was issued tickets returnable to the Town of Westford Court on June 4^th.

Police in Delhi & Walton are investigating alleged threats to the Delhi & Walton school districts Friday there was no actual incidents based on the Internet posted threats, both schools remained on lockdown, and police presence was beefed up at dismissal times. Franklin also went on lockdown for a short period at dismissal time, to insure the students’ safety, even though they were not mentioned specifically in the Internet threats. The investigations are continuing.

The Women’s Fund, of the Community Foundation for South Central New York, is accepting grant proposals for amounts of $1,000 to $4,000 from qualified organizations in Broome, Chenango, Delaware, Otsego and Tioga counties. Funding is available for projects or programs to improve the well being of women and/or girls throughout their lives.
