The fire was called in at about 6:35 Thursday morning with 10 area fire departments responding, along with other assistance from the State Police, Delhi police, state DOT, Delaware County sheriff’s office & NYSEG.

Delaware county sheriff’s department arrested 31-year-old Jennifer Morris of East Branch Wednesday for falsely reporting an incident and a violation of parole. Deputies responded to a Monday morning 911 call where a female reported being held against her will by 2 men in East Branch. Deputies and Troopers determined that the occupants had not called 911 and that no crime was being committed. The 911 call originated from an telephone number associated with more than one thousand 911 hang-up calls to the Delaware County 911 Center since May. The State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision Parole Officers arrested Morris for violating the terms of parole from her earlier conviction for Falsely Reporting an Incident, for making on-line threats against Walton school children through social media. Morris was arraigned & was remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $5000 cash bail or $10,000 bond; she will remain held without bail on the Parole Violation Detainer Warrant.

State Police at Sidney arrested 38-year-old Damion Hoag of Fallsburg for 1st degree Sex Abuse, & Endangering the Welfare of a Child, following an investigation into allegations that Hoag was having sexual contact with a person less than 11 years of age in the Town of Butternuts. Hoag was arraigned in the Town of Oneonta court and was remanded to the Otsego County jail in lieu of $5,000 cash bail or $10,000 property bond. His next court date is on August 25th.

Last weekend, a record amount of fans attended the Binghamton Senators’ Open House at Floyd Maines Veterans Memorial Arena on Saturday. The free event provided fans with guided tours and prizes all afternoon. Governor Andrew Cuomo has signed a bill that authorizes 16 and 17-year-olds to make organ donations upon their death. The legislation includes appropriate safeguards that enable parents or legal guardians to rescind the decision if the minor dies before age 18. Current law provides that the minimum age to make an anatomical gift in New York State is 18.

Lawrence Harvey of Coventry was arrested by Chenango County Sheriff’s Office for 2nd degree menacing. Deputies & State Police responded to a dispute in the Town of Coventry where one of the participants was reported to be using a knife and a baseball bat. Harvey was subdued, arrested and was arraigned in the Town of Bainbridge Court, he will return to Town of Coventry Court at a later date.

State Police arrested 45 year old Audra Brendel-Hart of Bainbridge for aggravated harassment, after troopers responded to a report of threatening telephone calls being received at a home in Conklin. Brendel-Hart allegedly made over 10 telephone calls threatening to harm the victim with a baseball bat last Friday Night into Saturday morning. She was arraigned and released, she faces action in the Town of Conklin shortly.

The Delaware County Board of Elections will have a voting machine at the Delaware County Fair on Friday August 19 to educate the public on how to vote on the machines. It will be at the Republican Booth from 11am to 3pm and at the Democratic Booth from 3pm to 7pm. They will also have registration forms and absentee applications available.

Otsego County Conservation Association will be holding a highway cleanup along State Route 80 tomorrow from 9:00 to 11:00 AM. The cleanup is part of New York State’s Adopt-A-Highway program, Volunteers will meet at OCCA’s office at Mohican Farm, at the corner of Route 80 and Allen Lake Road, and will collect trash along a two-mile stretch of the road. Bharara took over the commission’s files and recently convicted Former Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver & Former State Senate Leader Dean Skelos, but after “a thorough investigation”, his office has concluded there’s currently “insufficient evidence to prove a federal crime.”

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 30-year-old Jennifer Morris of East Branch, for 1 count of Criminal Contempt. Morris is accused of violating a Delaware County Court Order of Protection issued in 2013 upon her conviction for Falsely Reporting an Incident after making threats through social media, to the Walton Central School District. Morris was ordered to “refrain from the use of any Internet capable or texting device unless in the presence of an agency approved by the court or the probation department”. Morris created and maintained a Facebook account which violated the Court Order. Morris was arrested and was released on an Appearance Ticket to appear in the Town of Hancock Court on January 18th.

Area State Assemblyman Pete Lopez announced today that he will be suspending his bid to replace Congressman Chris Gibson in New York’s 19th Congressional District and is now officially seeking re-election in the 102nd Assembly District. Lopez announced that his father was recently diagnosed with cancer, & he is the eldest of 4 children, is the only sibling living in close proximity to his parents, & that he and his wife Bridget are their main caregivers. Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 38-year-old Thomas Kern of Sidney on 1 count of aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, following a civilian report of a suspicious person in the Village of Walton. Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 35-year-old Michal Grenda of Illinois, on one count of aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle in the third degree following a traffic stop in the Town of Walton. Grenda was additionally charged with unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and failure to keep right. The defendant was later released on traffic tickets returnable to Walton Town Court at a later date.

Delaware County Sheriff Deputies arrested 18 year old Dylan Groat of Walton for 3rd degree Grand Larceny. Groat is accused of removing a dirt bike from a business in the Town of Walton; the dirt bike was located and returned to the owner. Groat was arranged in the Town of Walton Court and remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $1,000 cash bail. Groat is to re-appear in the Town of Walton Court at a later date.

A City of Norwich resident was arrested by the Chenango County Sheriff’s for 10 counts of Petty Larceny. 24 year old Stephen Brady is accused of taking cash from his register during his shift on ten separate occasions at the Norwich Wal-Mart during the course of his employment. State Police at Norwich arrested 35-year-old Jacqueline Kane of West Babylon for Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs.  The arrest followed a stop on State Route 12 in Norwich, Kane refused to submit to a blood test, she was arraigned & was remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $1,000 cash bail or $2,500 bond, pending court action on April 17th.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 38-year-old Brian Cummings for Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a motor vehicle.  Cummings is accused of driving with a suspended license for failure to answer a traffic summons from Kirkwood Court. Cummings was arraigned in the Guilford Town Court and was remanded to the Chenango County Jail on Bail.

About 146,000 state workers this month will begin to receive their first raises since 2011. The raises were part of collective bargaining agreements, between Governor Cuomo and the state’s largest unions in 2011, when the state had a $10 billion deficit. The contracts called for no raises until the 2014-15 fiscal year, which started April 1st, and also included a no-layoff pledge. Cuomo’s budget office estimated the raises to six unions will cost the state about $189 million this fiscal year

On the 1-year anniversary of the passing of the New York safe act, gun control groups and Democratic Lawmakers said that the state should not stop at the law passed last year.  State legislators against Illegal Guns-NY said that they want legislation that additional safety of gun storage for those with children, requires all semi-automatic handguns that puts a code on each spent shell casing, called micro-stamping, and limit buyers to 1 handgun purchase a month.  Republicans that control the state senate are unlikely to support those proposals.

U.S. Senator Charles Schumer said that the federal funding for low income heating assistance would increase by $169 million dollars in the coming fiscal year, to a total of 3.4 billion dollars.  Schumer said had called on the appropriators to raise the funding following the extreme low temperatures earlier this month.  New York families whose income are 150% of the federal poverty level or lower are eligible, more information is available at otda.ny.gov.

13% of New York schools face some degree of fiscal distress with several having significant financial problems, according to a report from state comptroller tom DiNapoli, who warned that schools are dealing with budget deficits, limited revenue and depleted reserve funds.  The report showed that the struggles were worse among upstate schools, it can found at osc.state.ny.us.

New York’s senators reported that 33.7 million dollars for the national stream gauge network is included in appropriations before congress.  Senators Schumer & Gillibrand said the 6 million dollar increase in funding would help strengthen gauges in upstate counties that provide flood warnings during severe weather.  The senators said that the money would help the US Geological survey keep existing gauges online and allow the ISGS to add more gauges in the high-risk flood zones in the upstate regions.

SUNY Delhi has received national recognition for their online nursing program.  The 2014 edition of US News & World report, SUNY Delhi is at the top of the list for the best bachelor’s program, the program started 5 years ago when enrollment was projected to be around 50 students, the number has risen to 750.  SUNY Delhi was also recently approved for the 1st graduate program for a master’s in science for nursing.

28-year-old Jennifer Morris of East Branch pleaded guilty to a felony charge of falsely reporting an incident.  Morris will serve 6 months in Delaware County jail followed by 5 years probation orders of protection were issued for all victims named in the indictment filed against Morris.  Morris was arrested following a series of threats made on Facebook against people associated with the Walton Central School district.   Morris is scheduled to be sentenced in Delaware County Court on September 30th.

Inside, Otsego County investigators found more than eleven thousand dollars worth of heroin and more than ten thousand dollars worth of cocaine, in addition to nearly $450 worth of marijuana and more than $5,000 in cash. Young is a convicted felon from a previous drug arrest. Young and Rudnitsky were both sent to the Otsego County Jail on $35,000 and $15,000 cash bail. Deputies also arrested 43 year old Michel Steven Harabet, and 40 year old Melissa Rotolo, both of Oneonta, as part of the investigation. Investigators found the couple Saturday afternoon along Gardner Place with $2,000 worth of crack-cocaine. They were both taken to the Otsego County Jail on $25,000 cash bail. All four people return to Oneonta City Court this morning for further proceedings.

A worker for Canadian Pacific Railway came in contact with a power line and was electrocuted on Monday. 39 year old Thomas F. Tarchak of Simpson Pennsylvania was among a group of four workers inspecting a steel railroad bridge running over Route 235 in Harpursville when the inspection bucket he was in came into contact with the bridge and a NYSEG power line. The lift truck was still energized when emergency responders arrived at the scene. NYSEG had to cut power before the man’s body could be recovered. Route 235 between Route 7 and Davey Road was shut down during the response to the accident.

A woman accused of threatening Walton schools through Facebook postings is working on a plea deal with prosecutors. 28-year-old Jennifer Morris of East Branch is facing four felony charges of falsely reporting an incident.The indictment said she circulated warnings in June that there would be an explosion at Walton schools. She also faces seven counts of aggravated harassment for communications sent to six adults. Morris was in Delaware County Court on Monday for a possible plea deal, but her defense attorney, Andrew Puritz, requested an adjournment. Her next appearance and possible plea has been rescheduled for Sept. 16, at 1 pm in Delaware County Court. Morris remains in the Delaware County Jail with bail set at $20,000.

On Friday, Dajhoun T. Perez, 17, of Brooklyn, pleaded guilty in Broome County Court to assault in the second degree. Perez admitted that on June 12 he shot Daquan Smith, 21, of Binghamton, with a semi-automatic handgun. Perez was taken to the Broome County Jail. His sentencing is scheduled for Oct. 23. The court will have to decide whether to sentence him as a youthful offender or as an adult.

The Chenango County Department of Public Works shall close a section of County Road 33 today, between County Road 36(Norwich-Guilford Road) and County Road 34 (Springvale Road), in the Town of Norwich. This closure will be in place until the required culvert replacement work is completed. Local traffic shall be allowed access to their homes; however they will be required to travel away from the project for the closure period. Meanwhile, route 12 between Brisben and Greene has reopened after bridge work was completed ahead of schedule.

24-year-old John Desantis of Johnson City has been arrested for allegedly robbing the M&T Bank in Binghamton yesterday morning.  Desantis is accused of entering the bank branch on Exchange Street at around 9:10 Wednesday morning; he was arrested shortly after the robbery on a charge of 1st degree Robbery & was arraigned & was remanded to the Broome County Jail without bail.

Oneonta police arrested 3 city residents on drug possession charges Tuesday.  Charged were 37-year-old Terell Hardy, 20-year-old Jose Gonzalez and 21-year-old David Kohls, all of Oneonta, for 3rd degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.  Oneonta Police made the arrests after responding to a reported fight at 40 Maple Street; police confiscated a large quantity of drugs, about $3,000 cash, and a firearm.  All 3 were arraigned in Oneonta city court and were remanded to the Otsego County Jail on bail pending future court action.

State police in Norwich arrested 28-year-old Jason Huzinec of Norwich for Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle and Criminal Impersonation.  The arrest resulted from a traffic stop and investigation on State Route 12 in Guilford Huzinec was arraigned in the Town of Guilford Court and remanded to the Chenango County Jail.

The Sidney Police Department arrested 27-year-old Joseph Light of Sidney for 2nd degree Burglary, 3 counts of 3rd degree Burglary & 4 counts of Petty Larceny.  Light is accused unlawfully entering and stealing property from a residence on Grand Street and garages on Willow Street, and Colegrove Street. Light was arraigned at Sidney Village Court and Remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $10,000 cash bail or $20,000 bond, he will return to Sidney court on June 25th.

22 year old Daniel Doherty of Binghamton was sentenced in Broome County Court to 23 years in jail, on a charge of 1st degree manslaughter in a plea bargain deal, in connection with the death of 27 year old Daniel Martinez of the Bronx in October of 2011, Martinez was found in a wooded area in the town of Chenango by hunters.    Doherty will be required to testify at the trial of co-defendant, Joseph Ross-Jones as part of the plea deal with the district attorney’s office.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office Detective Division arrested 34-year-old Shawn Bosket of Windsor, after he allegedly failed to return an annual address verification form for sex offenders, to the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services. Bosket was taken into custody in the Town of Colesville on January 4th & was ordered to appear in the Town of Dickinson Court today.

State comptroller Tom DiNapoli released a report following an audit of the town of Deposit.  The town government responded, they reported that they would conduct a monthly review of the town clerk’s duties, the supervisor will review & Certify payroll before submission for payment, and have a review done by an appointed board member before it is given to the book keeper, & the town board will work to adopt budgets based on recurring revenues & amend the budget as needed, according to DiNapoli’s recommendations.

The Chenango chargers soccer team will hold an open house today from 5:00 to 8:00 PM, regarding their spring travel league, training session & the indoor soccer league.  The open house will be held at the chargers indoor facility on Maple Street in Norwich.
