State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli’s Office audited the Village of Sidney, covering the period of June 2020 to June 2022. The Audit said that the Board and Clerk-Treasurer did not properly monitor selected financial activities, so the total general fund balance for fiscal year-end 2021-22 was overstated by $571,719. For the past 5 years, the total airport operating deficits exceeded $293,000, Delinquent taxes totaling $575,182 date back to fiscal year 2011-12 and officials cannot identify which taxpayers owe $60,452 of that total. General fund assets were overstated by $288,510 and liabilities by $434,929 in fiscal year 2021-22. 2 capital project funds and 3 community development funds have negative fund balances. The Audit’s Recommendations were to determine whether revenues are adequate to cover expenditures, Collect delinquent real property taxes & Maintain proper accounting records, Village officials generally agreed and indicated corrective actions would be taken.

The State Police will increase patrols to combat drunk, impaired, and reckless driving throughout this Memorial Day weekend. The special enforcement period starts today and runs through Tuesday. Drivers can expect to see sobriety checkpoints and increased patrols by State Police and local law enforcement agencies during this holiday weekend. On Memorial Day weekend in 2022, Troopers arrested 213 people for driving while impaired, issued 13,688 total tickets, and investigated 808 crashes, which resulted in four fatalities.

Broome County District Attorney Mike Korchak announced that 50 year old Michael Seaman was sentenced to 4 years in New York State prison followed by 5 years post-release supervision after pleading guilty to felony Attempted Assault. Seaman admitted that on October 18, 2022, in the Town of Fenton, he attempted to cause serious injury to an 18-year-old male by stabbing him in the leg with a knife during a road rage altercation. The victim was hospitalized and required surgery. Seaman was located in Chenango County later that day.

Broome County DA’s office announced that 40 year old Quintin Wilson of Binghamton was convicted in Broome County Court in connection with a daytime Binghamton home invasion during which 2 people terrorized a 29-year-old woman. Wilson was found guilty for 2 counts of burglary, obstructing governmental administration and endangering the welfare of a child on March 5th 2021. Wilson will be sentenced on June 9.

Delaware County District Attorney’s Office announced that 41 year old Joshua Condon of Hartwick was sentenced to 20 year in prison for sexually abusing an 8 year old child. The sentences will be followed by 10 years of Post Release Supervision, and he will be required to register as a sex offender.

Delaware County District Attorney’s Office announced that 49 year old Lyman McCann of Delhi was arraigned on a 3 county Indictments in Delaware County Court last week. McCann was charged with failure to register a change of address, criminal possession of a weapon and Offering a False Instrument for filing . McCann is accused of failing to notify Law enforcement of a change of address, failing to register as a sex offender and possessing a billy club in October of last year, he was sent to the Delaware County Jail on $5,000 Cash Bail or $10,000 bond.

State Police arrested 42 year old Christopher Yeary of Hamden, Saturday night for Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Unlawful Imprisonment, Criminal Mischief, Criminal Obstruction of Breathing, & Menacing, following a domestic dispute on Chambers Hollow Road. Walton Police Officers were first on scene and assisted in removing a victim from the area, Yeary allegedly choked, then menaced the victim with a firearm. He then prevented the victim from leaving the residence and smashed the victim’s cell phone. Yeary refused to leave the residence to speak with law enforcement. After several hours, Yeary was taken into custody, he was arraigned and remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $25,000 bail or $50,000 bond.

State Police responded early Saturday Morning to a 1-vehicle crash on Shacktown Mountain Road in the town of Pittsfield. Troopers discovered that a vehicle exited the roadway, went down an embankment and struck trees, a 22-year-old passenger was pronounced deceased on scene. The 22-year-old driver was transported to Bassett Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. The crash remains under investigation.

NYSEG reports that thousands are without power this afternoon from Sunday’s storm. About 4800 were without power in Chenango County, more than 2700 in Delaware County and over 1500 in Otsego County. Crews are working to restore power as quickly as possible.

The 1st Nate Lull Scholarship Foundation Golf Tournament was held at the Ouleout Creek Golf Course in Franklin Sunday, WCDO Sports Director Nate Lull decided to start the scholarship fund for students in the Tri-County region;

First up was Left Handed Pitcher Jim Kaat, who played from 1959 to 1983, mostly with the Minnesota Twins, he said it was an honor to be selected by the Golden Era Committee for induction:

Gil’s daughter Irene Hodges told the audience how her father soothed the fears of Japanese children by teaching them baseball during Word War 2, but how he befriended & championed Jackie Robinson, the 1st African American Major Leaguer & Hodges teammate in Brooklyn:

A 43-year-old David Jakubonis of Fairport was charged in federal court Saturday with assaulting a member of Congress using a dangerous weapon. Jakubonis faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted of wielding a sharp object at Congressman Lee Zeldin during a campaign event in Monroe County Thursday night. Jakobonis was charged by local law enforcement with Attempted Assault in the attempted attack, Zeldin wasn’t injured.

Delaware County DPW announced the closure of county Route 37 in the town of Middletown to through traffic starting at 7:00 AM on Monday July 25. Crews will be performing a slope stabilization project, the closure will be between Main Street and Breezy Hill Road, work is expected to be completed by the end of August. The road will be open for one lane traffic controlled by a traffic light, during off-work hours.

State Police responded Thursday Morning to a 2-vehicle-crash on State Route 23 in the town of Roxbury. One person was pronounced deceased at the scene. The investigation revealed that a 79-year-old woman was traveling east on State Route 23 when she crossed over the double yellow line into the opposite lane of traffic, she struck a Curtis Lumber flatbed truck, which unsuccessfully attempted to avoid the crash. The woman was pronounced deceased on scene, her name will be released following the notification of family, The driver of the flatbed was taken to Bassett Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries. The investigation is ongoing.

Rochester police officer Anthony Mazurkiewicz was killed and Officer Sino Seng was injured in an ambush shooting Thursday night. Mazurkiewicz was a 29-year veteran of the Rochester Police Department, he was patrolling with Officer Seng when a male approached them and opened fire. Seng was shot in the lower body and is expected to survive, a woman who witnessed the attack was also shot and was injured with non-life-threatening injuries, the investigation is continuing.

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced $387 million is being delivered to 1,452 local governments across the New York State to help boost their pandemic response infrastructure. The announcement is part of the State’s ongoing preparation efforts to tackle any potential pandemic-related surges this fall and winter. This financial backing is made possible by the Coronavirus Local Fiscal Recovery Fund, part of the American Rescue Plan Act, which provides relief for smaller local governments who have shared in the public health response. The amount local governments will receive is available at budget.ny.gov.

State Police responded on Saturday at approximately 11:05 AM, to the report of a 2 vehicle accident on State Route 7 in Otego. Police stated that a Chevrolet Trail Blazer driven by 42 year old David VanBuren of Otego, while leaving a driveway, entered into the roadway and fails to yield the right of way to a Kia driven by 61 year old Lewis Keyser of Otego. Keyser was flown to Albany Medical Center by LifeNet for emergency surgery for injuries sustained in the accident, the investigation is continuing.

The results of the 78th Baseball Writers’ Association of America Hall of Fame election will be revealed at 6:00 PM tonight live from the Hall of Fame Plaque Gallery in Cooperstown. The event will be carried by the MLB Network, as Hall of Fame President Josh Rawitch delivers the results. The Ballot features 30 players, including 13 new candidates and 17 returnees. The Associated Press is reporting this morning that Former Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver has died while serving a prison sentence in a corruption case. Silver died Monday, he was 77, and he had been sentenced to more than six years in prison for using his clout in state government to benefit real estate developers. The conviction ended a four-decade career in the Assembly.

A New York state judge has ruled that the state’s mask mandate can’t be enforced. The mandate was re-instituted by the governor over concerns about a winter surge of coronavirus cases. The state health department has said the mandate would be in place until Feb 1. A State Supreme Court Judge ruled that the state Department of Health didn’t have the legal authority to implement the mandate. Governor Hochul says her administration disagrees with the ruling and is “pursuing every option to reverse this immediately.” School District can still enforce Mask Mandates for students.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested 40 year old Jeremiah Clark of Roxbury for possessing stolen property and falsifying business records. On November 7th, Deputies investigated a report of stolen scrap steel and copper from a building in the Town of Stamford, which were sold to Otsego Auto Crusher’s in Davenport. On January 14th, Delaware County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division assisted State Police with the execution of a search warrant on a residence in the Town of Roxbury, they charged Clark with Falsifying Business Records and Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, he was arraigned at the Town of Roxbury Court and was released on his own recognizance. Clark is scheduled to appear at the Town of Roxbury Court at a later date.

2 Chenango County Sheriff’s Deputies suffered minor injuries late Saturday night, as they were answering a call in a patrol car when they were hit by another vehicle at East Main Street and North Broad Street in Norwich. 19 year old Seth Wessels was the driver of the pickup truck that struck the Deputies patrol vehicle, he was found to be intoxicated at the time of the accident, he was charged with DWI by Norwich City Police, who responded to the accident. 1 of the deputies returned to work after being treated at Chenango Memorial Hospital, the other suffered a wrist injury & is expected to miss some time. the investigation is opngoing, Wessels will appear in Norwich City court at a later date.

Delaware County Public Health continues to see an increase in COVID test positivity rates. Testing on Thursday & Friday showed a rate of 16.67%, with 103 new cases, 23 hospitalized, 340 active cases and 403 quarantined. 53.4% of Delaware County Residents are fully vaccinated.

State Police issued 12,975 tickets statewide during this year’s special Thanksgiving holiday traffic enforcement period. Troopers arrested 183 people for DWI and investigated 1,041 crashes, including one fatal crash. Troopers issued over 4600 tickets for speeding, 440 for Distracted Driving, over 1520 for Seat belt violations & 119 for the Move Over Law.

The Attorney General’s Office has determined the police actions in the fatal shooting of an Oneonta man in April were justified to prevent the death of a child. Tyler Green was fatally shot during a confrontation with Oneonta police on April 6th, after Green made violent threats against his partner, who was visiting his house with their nearly-2-year-old child. Oneonta Police officers saw Green pull a knife and threatened to kill her, he cut his partner’s leg and swung the knife at 1 of the officers & grabbed his son by the leg & swung the knife at the child, when Sergeant Ralph Pajerski, fired 2 shots striking Green in the back. Green was transported to Fox Hospital and was later pronounced dead.

The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum announced who will be inducted into the Hall of Fame later this year. The Inductees are Player Manager Gil Hodges, Pitcher Jim Kaat, outfielders Minnie Miñoso & Tony Oliva, & Negro League players Bud Fowler and Buck O’Neil to Cooperstown. Hodges, Kaat, Miñoso and Oliva were elected by the Golden Days Era Committee, which considered a 10-person ballot comprised of candidates whose primary contribution to the game came from 1950-69. Fowler and O’Neil were elected by the Early Baseball Era Committee, which considered a 10-person ballot of candidates whose primary contribution the game came prior to 1950.
