The Greater Binghamton Sport Complex on Airport Road in the Town of Maine had its roof collapse Sunday, for the 2nd time in less than a year. The roof collapsed last December after snowfall, the structure was replaced and the roof collapsed during construction Sunday Afternoon. No injuries were reported & the investigation into the latest collapse is ongoing.

Binghamton Rumble Ponies announced a 23-year lease extension at Mirabito Stadium early Thursday morning; they also announced that John Hughes & his Evans Street Baseball group have sold the Binghamton Rumble Ponies to Southpaw Resources LLC, led by David Sobotka. Governor Kathy Hochul announced the distribution of 3,200 Turkeys statewide, for New Yorkers facing food insecurity issues on Thanksgiving. Various corporations donated over $100,000 dollars to the turkey distribution program, the turkeys will be distributed throughout every region of the State thanks to the donations and a partnership with Feeding New York State.

13 new candidates will be appearing on the 2022 National Baseball Hall of Fame ballot that is being mailed this week to approximately 400 voting members of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. Among the players now eligible; Alex Rodríguez, Justin Morneau, Ryan Howard and Jimmy Rollins; pitchers Tim Lincecum and Jake Peavy; and DH-first baseman David Ortiz will join 17 holdovers from the 2021 balloting, which failed to produce a new Hall of Famer. The State Assembly released their report regarding their impeachment investigation into former Governor Andrew Cuomo. The legislative investigation found overwhelming evidence that Cuomo engaged in sexual harassment many times and ordered state workers to help produce his book on the COVID-19 pandemic during their normal work hours. The former governor was guaranteed at least $5.2 million in personal profit for the book, the investigation into whether the Governor will have to return that money is ongoing.

Broome County DA Michael Korchak announced that a jury in Broome County Court found Scott Mawhiney guilty Friday for the attempted murder of New York State Trooper Ryan Thorp in Deposit. Mawhiney was also found guilty of and aggravated assault of a police officer, criminal possession of a weapon, and 2nd-degree harassment. Trooper Thorp was shot by Mawhiney, when he was responding June 23rd to a domestic dispute in Deposit, Mawhiney faces sentencing at a later date.

Delaware County Board of Elections announced that Eric Wilson won the town of Sidney Supervisor write in race, with 313 votes, to 191 for Kevin Greene; there were 22 votes for various other write in candidates.

Delaware County Public Health reported 2 more COVID 19 deaths in their report covering Thursday & Friday; they are now up to 71 deaths since the pandemic began. Delaware County reported 59 new cases, 219 active cases and 386 quarantined, 10 are hospitalized, their positivity rate was 10.4%, and only 53% are fully vaccinated.

State Police responded to a report of a vehicle into a pond in the town of Laurens. An investigation revealed that a 56-year-old male of Hopewell Junction, NY swerved in an attempt to avoid a deer. He went off the roadway and into a pond. The man was not injured. The New York State Police Underwater Recovery Team responded to assist in removing the Dodge Challenger out of the pond. State Police remind motorists that if a deer enters the roadway brake firmly and calmly and stay in your lane. Swerving can cause you to lose control of the vehicle. If you do hit a deer, pull off to the side of the road as soon as it’s safe to do so. Turn on your hazard lights, stay in the car & Call local police.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to the Town of Walton October 29th, on a report of a domestic dispute, where it was alleged that 39 year old Martin Planty had stolen another person’s vehicle & threatened to cause another person bodily harm. Planty left the scene and an arrest warrant was issued by the Town of Walton Court. On November 16th, Deputies conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle operated by Planty in the Town of Davenport, Panty’s driving privileges were suspended due a failure to answer a summons, and he was arrested for Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, Aggravated Harassment, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle and Speeding. Planty was arraigned & was released on his own recognizance; he is scheduled to appear at Walton & Davenport Courts at later dates.

WCDO NEWS WEDNESDAY 8-19-20 http://www.wcdoonline.com/localnews/wcdo-news-wednesday-8-19-20/ Wed, 19 Aug 2020 19:32:10 +0000 http://www.wcdoonline.com/localnews/?p=7870 Continue reading ]]> The Broome County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an accident involving a dirt bike and a parked van on Airport Road in the Town of Union Tuesday night.  Patrols were dispatched to Airport Road following reports of people riding minibikes and off-road motorcycles, 1 patrol observed a male riding a dirt bike which struck a full-size van that was parked on the side of the roadway a short time later.  Cameron Fortner was ejected off the dirt bike, a deputy found him unconscious and not breathing & she began CPR.  The investigation revealed that John Hughes saw the dirt bike traveling on the street, he entered the roadway with a shovel to force the dirt bike to the side of the roadway, and Fortner swerved & struck the van. Fortner was transported to Wilson Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead, Hughes was charged with 2nd degree Manslaughter, the investigation is continuing.

A Broome County Grand Jury has indicted 45 year-old Larry Harris of Johnson City on 2 charges of predatory sexual assault against a child and 2 counts of rape.  Broome County District Attorney Mike Korchak said that Harris was already being held in the Broome County Jail facing murder and manslaughter charges for the death of 11 year-old Jerome Smith in February of 2019.  The new charges were filed after a victim came forward accusing Harris of sex crimes between 2013 and 2019, Harris will be tried separately on the new charges.

The State Health Department announced that there were 631 new COVID 19 cases diagnosed Tuesday, out of over 80,000 test administered.  The total number of COVID 19 positive tests is 427,202, currently there are 548 people Hospitalized, there were 6 more deaths attributed to the virus yesterday, bringing the state death toll to 25,270 since March.

The Broome County Health Department announced that they had a small number of positive COVID 19 cases diagnosed Tuesday, bringing their total to 1124 since March.  They have had 75 deaths, 980 recoveries and 503 are being monitored by the Department.

The Chenango County Health Department reported that they are still at 218 total cases of COVID 19 since March, with 102 Active Quarantines, 1 Hospitalization, 199 Recoveries, 7 deaths & 20,089 Tests Performed.

Otsego County Health Department reported 2 new COVID 19 positive cases today, bringing their total since March to 115.  There are 3 active cases with no one hospitalized, 106 have recovered, 25 are quarantined due to close contact to ta case, and 196 are quarantined after traveling from a high risk state.  There have been 6 deaths in Otsego County from the virus.

State Police and local law enforcement agencies statewide will be ramping up enforcement of impaired driving today through Labor Day, Monday, September 7th with their annual “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign is designed to reduce alcohol and other drug-related traffic crashes.  Law enforcement will be stepping up patrols, and the NYS Thruway Authority and State Department of Transportation will have Variable Message Signs alerting motorists to the consequences of impaired driving to help deter that behavior. During the 2019 enforcement campaign, law enforcement throughout the state issued 4,995 tickets for impaired driving and 170,378 tickets for other vehicle and traffic law violations.

State Police and a Delaware County deputy were dispatched to a reported burglary in the town of Kortright where the homeowner told troopers a man & woman left the scene & that their residence in the town of Meredith had also been burglarized & a vehicle had been stolen.  The stolen vehicle was found at the Quality Inn of Oneonta, police arrested 34 year old Amber Weaver of Bloomville and 33 year old Christiaan Stewart of Bloomville for Burglary, Grand Larceny & Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, and Weaver was additionally charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance.  Both were arraigned and were remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $30,000 cash bail or $60,000 bond.

Governor Cuomo announced that the Special Enrollment Period for uninsured New Yorkers will be extended for another 30 days, through September 15, 2020, as the State continues to provide supportive services during the COVID-19 public health crisis. Delaware County Public Health received 1 new positive test result for COVID-19 Tuesday and no additional recoveries have been reported. The known active cases in the County as of today is now 3. To date there have been 99 confirmed positive cases of COVID-19, with 20 people now under mandatory quarantine.  The 3 people are isolated and receiving care at home, 6 people have died and 90 have fully recovered.

Hartwick College will welcome students to the campus between this Saturday, August 22 and Sunday, August 30, with Classes beginning August 31.  All students and employees will be required to adhere to numerous protocols.  Coursework will be delivered both in-person and virtually for students in the fall semester. Changes to the academic calendar for the fall semester eliminated breaks until in-person instruction ends on Friday, November 20, and then all students will leave campus by November 21 and then complete the semester’s instruction and exams remotely. Governor Cuomo is hoping for the 2nd Medicaid Redesign team to come up with savings as successful as the first Team did going back to 2011, to close about 1/3 of the state projected budget gap for the next fiscal year, Cuomo discussed that during his recent Budget Presentation in Albany:

State Police responded to a crash involving a Susquehanna Valley Central School District school bus on State Highway 11 in the town of Kirkwood.  State Police reported that the school bus was stopped, displaying flashing lights and the stop sign extended out, when 56 year old Michael Patchen of Conklin rear-ended the bus.   27 elementary school students were on the bus, along with bus driver 61 year old Mary Reardon they were not injured, Patchen was transported to Wilson Medical Center with Hand injuries, the students on the school bus were evaluated by a school nurse.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 55-Year-Old Michael Lagano of Sylvan Beach for Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle following a traffic stop on State Highway 10 in the Town of Walton.  Lagano was additionally issued tickets for Unlicensed Operator, operating a motor vehicle without stop lamps, and was released on traffic tickets returnable to Walton Town Court at a later date.

Delhi Village Police Department executed a “no-knock” search warrant Thursday at 42 Main Street. Police seized cocaine, marijuana, and diverted prescription medications, plus $750 in suspected drug proceeds, digital scales, drug packaging materials, and a replica handgun.  Police arrested 24-year-old Malcolm Griffith of Brooklyn for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance & Tampering with Physical Evidence; he was arraigned in the Town of Delhi Court and remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $50,000 cash bail or $100,000 dollars secured bond.  Delhi Police are considering additional charges in relation to this arrest.

Libertarian candidate Michael Korchak has been declared the winner in the race for Broome County district attorney of Republican Paul Battisti.  Korchak lost the Republican primary earlier this year to Battisti & ran on a 3rd party line, and after a close race on election day, and after the counting of absentee and affidavit ballots were counted,  Korchak won by 46 votes over Battisti, who said that he will not concede & is demanding a recount.

51 year old Julio Recio, a fugitive from justice has extradited from Spain and transported by US Marshals, to begin serving a 30-month prison sentence imposed in 1999 in a Federal Courtroom in Binghamton.   Recio transported cocaine from New York City to Binghamton, he was arrested in Binghamton, he pled guilty to a drug conspiracy charge & was sentenced to a 30 month term & was ordered him to self-report to prison, and instead, he fled the country until the U.S. Marshals identified him traveling between the Dominican Republic and Spain under an assumed name.   Recio will be transferred to a federal prison to serve his term.

Broome County Sheriff’s department arrested 3 people following an unruly protest at the County Office Building Thursday afternoon during the regularly scheduled meeting of the Broome County Legislature. Deputies were informed that some protesters were unruly and refused to obey directives from the Broome County Division of Security.  Arrested were 20 year old Brian McQuaid, 28 year old Quinton Archer & 30 year old Carinne Vizvary, all of Binghamton, they were charged with Obstructing governmental administration, resisting arrest, & were processed by the Binghamton Police Department.

Pritchard was arrested after Troopers responded to a complaint from a UPS driver who observed a dog whose left leg appeared to be missing, The Susquehanna SPCA responded and a veterinarian was contacted, who believed that Zoe had chewed off her own leg after they observed bone fragments in her stomach, she also had previous untreated injuries and scarred ear tips.  Zoe was transported to Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine for further care.  Pritchard surrender Zoe due to his inability to pay for any vet bills, he is due to appear in the town of Exeter court on December 4th.

2 unidentified people were arrested Monday night at Binghamton University, following protests of republican Economist Arthur Laffer, who was scheduled to give a speech on campus after being invited to speak by College Republicans.  Laffer was not able to deliver his speech; the protest came 2 days after an outside protest on the campus following a separate event, also by College Republicans.    State Senator Fred Akshar announced that he has cancelled his planned visit tonight to Binghamton University’s campus; he extended an invitation to the leaders of the Binghamton University College Progressives, College Democrats and the College Republicans to meet to discuss the incidents.

Binghamton Rumble Ponies owner John Hughes today held a press conference regarding the potential for Major League Baseball of shutting down about 1/4 of the minor league teams in the country, including the Rumble Ponies.  Hughes said that NYSEG Stadium is greatly improved & fully compliant with existing standards:

Hughes said that another factor in closing down teams is the proximity of the team to the Major League Franchise; obviously Binghamton is within 200 miles of Citi Field in Queens.  So far no decisions have been made, no meetings have been held regarding this proposal & the 2020 season will be played as scheduled.

State Police arrested 2 Pennsylvania residents following a drug bust in Chenango County that seized thousands of dollars’ worth of drugs.  28 year old Jordan Melendez and 24 year old Kimberly Rivas were arrested Thursday following the execution of search warrants at multiple locations in Chenango County.  Police seized 1.5 pounds of Crystal Meth, pure Fentanyl, 20 pounds of marihuana, 4 handguns, 16 illegally possessed long guns Scales, Packaging materials & $3,350.00 in cash. Melendez & Rivas were charged with Criminal possession of a controlled substance & were arraigned in the Town of Norwich Court and remanded to Chenango County Jail with no bail. The case remains under investigation, additional charges are possible.

Sunday night, the Deposit Fire Department and Eastern Broome Emergency Services were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident where the vehicle involved had gone into a creek in the Town of Sanford. The sole occupant of the vehicle was able to get out of the vehicle and water prior to our arrival. The occupant sustained injuries as a result of the accident and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

65 year old Daniel Drew of Buffalo has been identified as the pilot of the fatal plane crash near Chase Brook Road in the town of Tompkins Friday afternoon. Drew was the only person on the 6 passenger Cessna; he was heading for New Jersey after taking off from Niagara Falls. The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 44 year old Patricia McNeilly of Franklin for Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle in the 3rd Degree, and Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Suspended Registration, and insufficient head lamps. Governor Cuomo announced that more than $372 million in assistance is available to help older adults and low- and middle-income New Yorkers heat their homes this winter. Applications for the Home Energy Assistance Program will be accepted by local departments of social services starting tomorrow. Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested Shawn Peck of Walton, after an investigation into an ongoing neighbor dispute. Peck is accused of causing $250 worth of damage to the property of another person on separate occasions. Peck was charged with 2 counts of Criminal Mischief, he was released on appearance tickets to appear in the Village of Walton Court at a later date. Walton Police Department assisted in the investigation.

Norwich Police arrested a man & his 2 sons, following an investigation into a June 5th assault. Police arrested 54 year old John Hughes, 27 year old Joseph Hughes & 25 year old Nicholas Hughes of Norwich on 1st degree Assault Charges, after the victim was found unconscious in the middle Silver Street with trauma to the head and face. The victim was taken first to Chenango Memorial Hospital & then was transferred to UHS Wilson Hospital in Johnson City with a fractured eye socket, skull fractures and brain bleeds. All 3 suspects were remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $5,000 cash bail each.

Manufacturing in New York State grew for a 2nd month in July, but at a slower pace than the Month before. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York reported that its Empire State Manufacturing Index dropped to 9.8 in July from 19.8 in June; any reading above zero still indicates expansion. The measure of new orders dropped to a still respectable 13.3, shipment growth was less than half from June at a 10.5 reading.

US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is making appearances this week in the upstate counties; to discuss federal efforts to combat Lyme Disease. Currently, the Trump Administration has started the process to establish the “Tick Borne Illness Disease Working Group”, forming the group was a provision in Gillibrand sponsored legislation “The Lyme & Tick Borne Illness Prevention, Education & Research Act”, which became law in December. The group will serve as an advisory committee to the Department of Health & Human Services. In 2015, there were 3200 cases of Lyme Disease in New York State alone.

New York State Trooper Joel Davis killed in the line of duty last week, thousands attended his funeral Saturday at the Fort Drum sports complex, which was used to accommodate the crowd of thousands of law enforcement officers from the U.S. and Canada. Trooper Davis was killed while responding to a domestic dispute July 9th.

Governor Cuomo today announced the expansion of the New York State Master Teacher Program. The current 623 Master Teachers have an average teaching experience of 14 years. To be eligible for application to the NYS Master Teacher Program, teachers must be certified New York State public school teachers in grades six through twelve, have a minimum of 4 years of experience teaching STEM subjects and must spend at least 60 percent of their time in the classroom teaching those subjects. Binghamton Mets New Owner John Hughes announced that the team would remain as a New York met Affiliate, but he is soliciting ideas from fans to rebrand the team & give it a new name synonymous with the Greater Binghamton Area. Hughes revealed the Double-A affiliate of the New York Mets would play at NYSEG Stadium under a new name starting in 2017. The team will launch a “Name the Team” contest on Opening Day, April 7. Submissions will be accepted through April 25th, when the top 6 possible team names will be unveiled. Fans can vote for their favorite name for two weeks via the team website. The new official name of the Double-A Mets will be revealed in October 2016.

The Delaware County Sheriff’s Department announced that there will be a fundraiser this Sunday in Walton, to support their K9 Unit, which has been an integral part of the County’s crackdown on Drug dealers in the County. Doctor Stephen Benham of Sidney announced his retirement and the closing of his practice, effective march 24th after 32 years in Sidney. The City of Oneonta Department of Public Service will be installing a new storm water collection system on Tilley Avenue & Walters street and they will be replacing an existing system on James Street, starting on march 15th. State Police reported that KyLea Fortner and her sister Shaeleen Fitch-Fortner, who were reported as teen runaways in April of 2015, were found at 327 Torrance Avenue in Vestal. Both girls were turned over to the Broome County Family Services. State Police received and investigated numerous leads, information was developed which indicated that they were present at the Vestal address. State Police arrested 29 year old Amanda Hellman of Vestal, for 2nd degree Kidnapping. Hellman is a family acquaintance of the victims, she was arraigned in Town of Vestal Court & was remanded to the Broome County Jail without bail. State Police and local law enforcement will initiate special St. Patrick’s Day traffic enforcement efforts as celebrations begin this weekend. The effort will begin Saturday, and run through Thursday, drivers can expect a number of sobriety checkpoints, additional DWI patrols, and underage drinking details during the campaign. State Police will also be ticketing distracted drivers who use handheld electronic devices. During the 2015 St. Patrick’s Day weekend enforcement effort, Troopers made 264 arrests for DWI and issued more than 14,000 tickets.

The investigation was launched after the Department of Public Service raised concerns over Ambit’s customer disclosure statements and renewal notices, particularly for customers who were moved from a guaranteed-savings plan into a variable rate plan charging significantly more. Ambit has made major adjustments to customers’ bills in an effort to both resolve concerns raised by the Department and satisfy customers who were charged more after being moved out of the guaranteed-savings plan.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office have charged a man with DWI, following an accident involving 3 tractor trailers Monday morning. The accident occurred on Colesville Road in Kirkwood, where a tractor trailer driven by 54 year old Daniel Masonic of Binghamton, crossed over the double yellow lines and struck two other tractor trailers who were headed the opposite direction. Masonic’s truck then went off the road, up an embankment, and struck a group of trees. Masonic’s BAC was .18%. He was issued tickets to appear at a later date in the Town of Kirkwood court.

The murder trial of 57-year-old John Guzy is scheduled to begin in late March in Chenango County Court. Guzy is accused of fatally shooting 26 year old Derek Prindle of Afton, and shooting in injuring Prindle’s father, 60 year old Derek Prindle, in a case of alleged road rage on October 27th 2014, on state route 7 in Bainbridge. Guzy turned himself in to state police at the Troop C headquarters after the shooting; he remains held at the Chenango county jail pending the upcoming trial.

Empire State Development Announced that Amphenol Corporation in Sidney will receive $750,000 for propane to their Sidney factory while they wait for a natural gas pipeline to be built through the southern tier. The ESD Board approved of the Monday to divert up to $750,000 in an existing incentive package that allowed Amphenol to stay in Sidney after the 2 serious floods in 2006 & 2011. Amphenol operates a new closer to the I-88 Corridor, where they will be able to acquire natural gas service from the planned Constitution Pipeline.

Governor Cuomo signed a bill into law that will help prevent future home fire deaths in New York State. The bill provides that batteries in battery operated single station smoke detecting alarm devices shall be non-replaceable, non-removable and capable of powering the devices for a minimum of ten years. The bill was proposed as Firefighters frequently encounter homes without smoke alarms or working smoke alarms, where residents fail to replace old batteries. The law goes into effect in 2017.

State Troopers arrested 34 year old Nathaniel Dendler of Windsor for DWI, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Inadequate Exhaust and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance. Dendler’s passenger, 19 year old Caleb Harris of Windsor was found to be in possession of heroin and suboxone and was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance. Both arraigned in the Town of Windsor Court, Dendler was remanded to the Broome County Jail in lieu of $2,000 cash bail. Harris was released on his own recognizance.

Binghamton Police arrested 41 year old Harry Johnson for 3rd degree Grand Larceny & Falsely Reporting an incident. Johnson is accused of reporting an armed robbery at Joseph Guardi Auto Sales in Binghamton, as he opened up the business Saturday morning. Detectives determined that a robbery did not happen, Johnson was arraigned and is being held in Broome County Jail.
