Former Colonial Restaurant owners Yaron Kweller and Jordan Rindgen were aquitted in Broome County Court Tuesday of sexually assaulting a 21-year-old woman in Binghamton in November 2021. The Broome County Jury took about 2 hours to clear the 2 of all charges.

21 year old Patrick Dai of Pittsford, and Cornell University, was arrested Tuesday on a federal criminal complaint charging him with posting threats to kill or injure another using interstate communications. Dai is accused of posting messages to the Cornell section of an online discussion site, where he allegedly called for the deaths of Jewish people and a post threatening to shoot up 104 west, which is a Cornell University kosher dining hall located next to the Cornell Jewish Center. The charge filed against Dai carries a maximum term of 5 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and a term of supervised release of up to 3 years. Dai is being held at the Broome County Correctional Facility pending court action in a federal court in Syracuse.

The State Dec announced that Amphenol Aerospace recently paid a civil penalty of $945,000 for violations related to the tampering of weekly sampling reports and submission of false materials to DEC over a two-year period. The DEC began investigating Amphenol Aerospace in April 2022 after being notified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency of a complaint that the facility had modified sampling practices by removing nitric acid from wastewater, drumming it into 55-gallon drums, and returning it back into the wastewater treatment system after weekly samples of effluent from the outfall had been collected. EnCon Police and DEC Division of Water employees inspected the facility, Amphenol has instituted procedures to avoid potential recurrences.

New York employers are expected to save more than $50 million dollars in 2024 due to a reduction in the annual workers’ compensation assessment rate, which was set today and goes into effect on January 1, 2024. The Broome County Sheriff’s Office released the name of the victim killed in a fatal motor vehicle accident on Monday. 17 year old Makai Wilkinson of Harpursville was driving a pickup truck with 2 passengers on Welton Street in the Town of Colesville when the vehicle left the roadway and collided with a tree. The two passengers were transported Wilson Hospital, one for minor injuries and the other for serious injuries, but Wilkinson was pronounced dead at the scene. This is an ongoing investigation.

30 year old Terrence Mewborn pleaded guilty to 1 count of Criminal Possession of a Weapon, in Delaware County Court. On July 2, 2022, Deputies responded to a motor vehicle accident with a rollover in the Town of Franklin, several of the passengers were injured and required hospitalization. Deputies found narcotics, drug paraphernalia, and a semi-automatic handgun, Mewborn was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon, along with several other criminal charges, he entered a plea of guilty, he admitted the handgun was his, and that he did not have a pistol permit, it is anticipated that Mewborn will be sentenced to 2 to 4 years in state prison.

State Police announced that no arrests were made during an Underage Drinking Initiative in Troop “C” in Otsego County on Friday October 27th. During the initiative, 13 businesses were checked. All 13 were in compliance and did not sell alcohol to an under-aged operative. During the Initiative, retail establishments are checked using a trooper in plain clothes and one or several underage operatives who cannot lie about their age or give a fake date of birth. Governor Kathy Hochul announced that airports across the State will receive approximately $49 million for strategic infrastructure enhancements that will enhance safety, facilitate innovation, leverage existing resources, advance business development, and promote sustainability and resiliency. State Police were dispatched Friday Night to a fatal crash on State Route 13 in the town of Newfield. A preliminary investigation reveals that a 42 year old Patrick Robinson of Ithaca lost control of a motorcycle on wet roads, laying the bike down, A Passerby, 34 year old Mathew Poplawski of Schenectady stopped to assist Robinson when a vehicle stuck both men, both were pronounced deceased on scene. The operator of the vehicle was a 57-year-old man from Illinois is cooperating with State Police, Alcohol does not appear to be a factor. The investigation is on-going.

Sidney Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire with possible entrapment at approximately 5:44 am Friday at 50 East Main Street, lot 19 in the village of Sidney. 41 year old Steven Baker of Sidney pleaded guilty to 1 count of Animal Cruelty. On May 3, Sidney Police responded to a complaint of animal abuse at 40 River Street in the Village of Sidney, the officer observed an 8-month-old puppy with a gash on its left hind leg. The puppy was treated, Baker admitted that he became upset with the dog and threw a knife at it causing the gash in its hind leg. Baker appeared in Sidney Court today & pleaded guilty to Animal Cruelty, he will be sentenced to 1 year of in the Delaware County Correctional Facility, he will be required to register as on the Animal Abuser Registry, he will be prohibited from owning, possessing, residing with, or having contact with any companion animal. Baker was remanded to the Delaware County jail pending sentencing.

The Broome County District Attorney’s Office announced that charges or rape & sexual abuse charges have been dropped against Leor Kweller. Oneonta City Police are investigating the death of a man found in a Fox Hospital Bathroom on May 31st. The identity of the deceased has not been announced, Fox Hospital officials said that the man was not a patient, Emergency personnel attempted to revive the man unsuccessfully. The results of an autopsy performed Monday in Binghamton have not been released, foul play is not suspected.

The New York State Department of Labor today released preliminary local area unemployment rates for February 2023. Rates are calculated using methods prescribed by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. New York State’s seasonally adjusted unemployment held constant at 4.2% in February 2023. Locally, Chenango County had 4.1% unemployment, Delaware County had 4.5% and Otsego County 4.4% unemployment in February.

The State DOT announced that construction began to replace the existing bridge carrying NY Route 79 over the Chenango River in the Towns of Fenton and Barker in Broome County, with a new bridge realigning NY Route 79. The Broome County District Attorney’s office is still pursuing the Colonial restaurant Rape case, after the owners sought to have the charges dismissed against them last month. The DA’s office said that Jordan Rindgen, Yaron Kweller and his brother Leor Kweller are accused of supplying cocaine to 2 young women and then raping them in a basement on Washington Street in downtown Binghamton on November 27th, 2021. The Colonial Restaurant and Bar and Dos Rios Cantina, both owned by the defendants, have both since closed since the allegations went public & the charges were filed.

Walton fire fighters responded to 14 Tripp Avenue in Walton last Wednesday for a shed and a garage fire that spread to a nearby house. Firefighters arrived to the scene, 2 occupants had escaped the fire, 2 neighboring homes were evacuated, The shed and garage were destroyed, home suffered significant damage on the second floor, 1 firefighter suffered a minor injury and was treated at the scene. Walton was assisted by Delhi and Trout Creek Fire Departments, Sidney Fire Department’s FAST team. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

A new state law goes into effect today that will fine motorists with vehicle mufflers and exhaust systems modified to make them louder than the stock applications. The maximum fines for installing the illegal equipment will increase from $150 to $1,000, and if repair shop owners are caught installing the equipment three times within 18 months, they risk losing their certificate of inspection stations and operating certificate. The legislation also adds a requirement for inspection stations to check motorcycles for mufflers and exhausts that have been illegally modified.

A judge has ordered New York’s Democrat-controlled Legislature to redraw the state’s congressional and legislative districts after finding they were unconstitutional. Judge Patrick McAllister ruled that maps redrawing the state’s congressional districts were gerrymandered to benefit Democrats, he gave lawmakers until April 11 to draw new maps, if those fail, the judge said he would order the state to pay for a court-approved expert to redraw the maps.

Beginning Today, the State DEC will be adopting changes to fishing regulations, including year-round fishing for Atlantic salmon as well as other lake and pond fish. Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies observed an SUV on Friday February 18th traveling 80 MPH in a 55 MPH zone on State Highway 17 in the Town of Hancock. Deputies stopped the vehicle and identified the driver as 19-year-old Albierys Connor of New York City. Further investigation revealed that Connor’s NY driver’s license had been previously suspended in the Bronx, Connor was charged with Aggravated Unlicensed Operation in the 3rd Degree and operating an Unregistered Motor Vehicle. Connor was released with an appearance ticket, returnable to the Town of Hancock Court at a later date.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies observed a vehicle traveling on State Hwy 206 in the Town of Colchester on February 13th, with an expired inspection sticker. Deputies stopped the vehicle, they learned that the operator, Dustin Howe, had his driving privileges suspended for failing to answer previous summonses. Howe was charged with Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Unlicensed Operator, Uninspected & Unregistered Motor Vehicle and Obstructed License Plate, Howe was released on Traffic Tickets, and is scheduled to appear in the Town of Colchester Court at a later date to answer for the charges.

The Broome County Health Department reports that the number of COVID-19 cases has decreased in the past month. The Health Department reported that in 1 months time, active cases went from 1421 to 313 currently, and hospitalizations from the virus decreased from just over 1100 to 72 on Wednesday.
