46 year old John Jaromack Jr, formerly of Franklin, appeared in Delaware County Court Monday, he was sentenced to a total of 10 years in State Prison to be followed by 10 years of post-release supervision. Jaromack pleaded guilty to 2 counts of Criminal Sexual Act in August in Delaware County Court, he admitted to sexually abusing a minor child. The court also issued orders of protection in favor of the two children for the next 13 years. The defendant will be mandated to register as a sex offender upon being released from prison.

U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand announced today that millions in federal funding will be available for New Yorkers through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program this winter:

The money will help thousands of households across the state afford their heating bills and make cost-effective home energy repairs this winter. She is also calling for additional funding for LIHEAP to make sure that as many qualifying families as possible can get the assistance they need throughout the coming months.

The Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office reported that a Binghamton man who led police agencies on a manhunt, was taken into custody today. Christopher Borges of Binghamton led police on a manhunt covering several hours, he was located and taken into custody around 10:07 am. on Deerfield Lane in the Town of Caroline without incident. Charges against Borges include kidnapping, robbery and criminal contempt.

52 year old Shelly Genung of Sidney appeared in Delaware County Court Tuesday and pleaded guilty to 1 count of Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated with a child in the vehicle. Genung admitted that she was operating the motor vehicle on a public highway in the Village of Sidney, while she was intoxicated by alcohol, with a 6-year-old child in the vehicle, she will be sentenced to 5 years of felony probation supervision and required to comply with any substance abuse treatment recommendations & successfully complete the Impaired Driving Program and attend a Victim Impact Panel, her license will be revoked, and she will be required to install an ignition interlock device in any vehicle she owns or operates.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office arrested 45 year old Danielle Ashdown of Binghamton during the intake process at the Broome County Correctional Facility. On October 6th, Ashdown was arrested by Binghamton Police for a conditional discharge. A routine search uncovered 2 clear bags hidden on her person, containing methamphetamine and fentanyl, they also recovered 2 other substances. Ashdown was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance & 3 Counts of Promoting Prison Contraband, she was remanded to the Broome County Correctional Facility.

The Otsego County Department of Health reports that a cat tested positive for rabies in the Village of Cherry Valley on October 24, 2023. This cat belonged to a feral cat colony on Montgomery Street in the Village of Cherry Valley. A Pre-Trial Hearing was held in Chenango County Court today, regarding the murder & arson trial of Ernest Franklin of Guilford, who along with his wife Heather are accused of killing their son Jeffrey & setting the family residence on fire to cover it up. A Pre-Trial Hearing for Heather Franklin has not been scheduled, Chenango County District Attorney Joseph McBride has stated that the 2 will be tried separately, The Trial is expected to begin next year.

Governor Cuomo announced more than $220 million in federal grants that will support counter terrorism and emergency preparedness activities in counties across New York State. The funding supports regional preparedness efforts, including planning, organization, and training activities that are critical to sustaining and improving community prevention, protection, response, and recovery capabilities. U.S. Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand announced $1.8 Million Dollars for the Sidney Municipal Airport, through the Federal Aviation Administration. the Airport will use the funding to construct a new taxiway. The funding is awarded through the Airport Improvement Program and is administered by the FAA, for grants to public agencies for the planning and development of public-use airports.

Governor Cuomo announced that 124 Airmen from the 106th Rescue Wing of the New York Air National Guard will deploy this afternoon to the U.S. Virgin Islands to assist in the response to Hurricane Irma. Additionally, the Governor is deploying Task Force 2 to Florida, that team specializes in structural collapse rescue, excavation emergencies, technical rope rescues, confined space rescue, and other specialized rescues.

State Police arrested 24-year-old Adam Gager of Windsor on 7 counts of Falsifying Business Records. Police were advised of a theft of over $800 from the Mirabito gas station on Old Route 17 in the town of Windsor, Gager was an employee, He is accused of deleting items from the store sales records and using the money to purchase lottery tickets. Gager was arraigned in the town of Windsor court and was remanded to the Broome County Jail in lieu of $2,000 cash bail or $4,000 property bond.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 40 year old Gloria Prott of Southhaven on charges of unlawful possession of marijuana, criminal possession of a controlled substance, driving while ability impaired by drugs, speeding at 80 miles an hour in a 55 zone and operating a motor vehicle with an open container of an alcoholic beverage, following a traffic stop on State Highway 17 in the Town of Hancock. 49-year-old Edward Prott of Southhaven was a passenger in the vehicle; he was also arrested for criminal possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of marijuana. Cocaine and Marijuana were seized from the vehicle; both were arraigned in Hancock Village Court and were remanded to the Delaware County Jail on cash bail pending future court action.

More than 9.1 million New Yorkers were working in 2016, according to a report released by State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. The report showed that regional growth remained uneven, with downstate regions experiencing the highest employment growth while most upstate regions saw declines. The report also showed that the total number of employed workers declined in the Southern Tier, the Mohawk Valley, Central New York and Western New York from 2011 to 2016, women constitute nearly 48% of the labor force, 40.6% have a bachelor’s degree or higher, and nearly 24% of workers in New York belonged to unions.

Chenango County Sheriff Deputies & Norwich City Police arrested 56-year-old James Brown following an investigation into the illegal growing of cannabis. The investigation led Deputies to a Sherburne residence where marijuana plants were discovered, Brown was released on an appearance ticket for a later date in the Town of Sherburne Court.

Chenango County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 57-year-old Timothy Hunter after a warrant was issued for his arrest following a domestic dispute where he allegedly displayed a firearm; the victims fled the scene to a nearby residence & called 911. Hunter was arrested without incident and arraigned in the Town of North Norwich Court where he was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $250 cash bail.

State Police arrested 62-year-old Gary Perine of Sanford for 3rd degree Arson. On August 25, troopers and local fire departments responded to an unoccupied house fire at 28 Kenyon Hill road in the town of Sanford, troopers accuse Perine had purposely started the fire inside his home. Perine was arraigned in the town of Sanford court and was remanded to the Broome county jail with no bail set. His next court date is pending.

Governor Cuomo announced that the Great New York State Fair concluded a successful year by breaking two records on its final day. Labor Day attendance of 124,819 not only set the record for the most people to come to the Fair on a single day, it also drove the Fair to an all-time annual attendance record of 1,161,912 people. During this year’s run, the Fair set four daily attendance records, including breaking the record for the largest single-day audience ever twice.

Governor Cuomo announced that a 30-member State Incident Management Team is heading to Texas today to support the response and recovery efforts in the wake of the devastation from Hurricane Harvey. The 30-member, multi-agency Team has been requested by the State of Texas Division of Emergency Management and the Texas A&M Forest Service to assist state and local officials with operational coordination, obtaining information, mapping, and logistical support for ongoing response operations.

State Police and local law enforcement agencies will be out in force this Labor Day weekend as part of the national “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” DWI campaign. Labor Day weekend traditionally results in heavy traffic volumes; State Police will maximize their DWI enforcement efforts, with sobriety checkpoints & unmarked patrol vehicles on state highways. Police will also be watching for distracted drivers, occupants who are not properly restrained and drivers that are violating the Move Over Law.

State Police arrested 37 year old Jillian Eckberg of Oneonta for Criminal Contempt & Stalking, after troopers were advised that Eckberg allegedly violated a court order of protection, by sending the protected person a series of text messages and voicemails that put him in fear. Eckberg was arraigned in town of Hartwick court and was remanded to the Otsego county jail on $2,500 cash bail or $5,000 property bond, pending action in town of Milford court.

Former Binghamton Mayor Juanita Crabb and former Binghamton Triplet Jerry Coleman will be inducted into Binghamton’s Baseball Shrine in a ceremony at NYSEG Stadium before the Binghamton Rumble Ponies game tonight at 7:05 PM. Crabb was instrumental in bringing professional baseball back to the Southern Tier in the 90’s, Coleman was a member of the 1946 Binghamton Triplets, he played for 9 seasons in the Major Leagues with the New York Yankees, appearing in 6 World Series, he was MVP in the 1950 Fall Classic. Coleman also spent more than 4 decades calling games for the San Diego Padres. Binghamton’s Baseball Shrine has 65 members currently.

Governor Cuomo announced that lane closures for road and bridge construction projects on state highways will be suspended until Tuesday morning at 6:00 AM to accommodate travelers during the busy Labor Day holiday weekend. Most construction projects will be suspended, but some work may continue behind permanent concrete barriers or for emergency repairs.

State Police arrested 31-year-old Christen Young of Unadilla for Resisting Arrest, Stalking, Criminal Contempt and Harassment. Young allegedly violated a court order of protection, & she had been in a course of conduct that caused the protected person to fear for his employment and career. Young physically resisted being arrested and handcuffed; she kicked a trooper in the ankle at Police Barracks. Young was arraigned and was remanded to the Delaware county jail on $1,500 cash bail or $3,000 property bond. She faces action in Kortright, Unadilla & Oneonta courts shortly.

State Police arrested 37-year-old Edward Shelton & 22-year-old Cheyenne Koban of Port Crane for Grand Larceny, after troopers were advised of a theft of a .22 caliber rifle from a home in the town of Fenton. Shelton and Koban allegedly took the rifle without permission when they moved out of the home, they were arraigned in the town of Fenton court and released without bail required. Their next court dates are pending.

Governor Cuomo requested that the federal government grant a Major Disaster Declaration for 15 counties impacted by flash flooding, tornados and unprecedented levels of precipitation during severe storms in late June and July. Once the declaration is granted, FEMA funding would be available to the state and eligible local governments and nonprofit organizations to support debris removal, structure repairs and emergency protective measures. Locally, Broome County was one of the 15 counties included in the request for the disaster declaration.

Oneonta Police responded to a report of a residential burglary in progress on Elm Street. officers were met outside by the homeowners who reported that the suspect was still inside the residence, officers discovered a man exiting the house through a first floor window, the suspect resisted arrested & was identified as 21 year old Paul Dorego Jr, of Sag Harbor. The subsequent investigation revealed that Mr. Dorego had entered the residence through the back door after breaking two windows. Dorego was charged with 2nd degree Burglary, Criminal Mischief & Resisting arrest, he faces court action shortly.

Governor Cuomo today announced that the Unemployment Insurance reforms in 2013 have resulted in additional savings for New York State employers in terms of their State Unemployment Insurance contributions. Employers have already saved an estimated $200 million through the early repayment of federal debt with each saving, on average, an estimated total of $1,200 or $84 per employee. As a result, the Unemployment Insurance contribution rate schedules have been adjusted downward, reducing costs and saving employers up to an additional $42.80 per employee.

State Police arrested 30-year-old Patrick Hill of Whitney Point on 3 counts of sexual abuse and 1 count of endangering the welfare of a child. Hill is accused of having sexual contact with a victim less than 14 years old several times in the Town of Nanticoke; Hill was issued tickets returnable to the Town of Nanticoke court on February 25th.

35-year-old Anthony Thompson of Binghamton faces an animal cruelty charge for allegedly neglecting 7 dogs on a property in Chenango County. 7 pit bulls were saved from the property in North Norwich; all of the dogs are now in the state’s custody & are being treated at an animal clinic in Norwich. Thompson is currently in custody & faces court action shortly.

The Federal Olmstead act may be proving to be counter productive to the developmentally disabled, that have been moved from Broome Developmental into group homes. Area Assemblyman Cliff Crouch Comments:

State Police arrested 60-year-old Sandra Simmons of Port Crane for the felony of aggravated DWI with a B.A.C. result of .23% plus other traffic violations. The arrest occurred after a Broome county 911 report of an erratic driver in Johnson City. Simmons was arraigned & was remanded to the Broome County jail with no bail set at this time. Her next court date in the Village of Johnson City is pending.

Annual local sales tax collections declined in 30 of the 57 counties outside of New York City last year, according to a report issued today by State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. Total collections across the state grew by 3.6% in 2015, but the increase was nearly exclusively driven by New York City. Elsewhere, growth in local sales tax collections was a mere 0.7%. 10 counties experienced a decline of more than 3%, including Delaware County.
