National Baseball Hall of Fame Induction Ceremonies will be held this weekend in Cooperstown. The festivities start with the Parade of Legends Cooperstown at 6:00 PM Saturday. The parade originates at Lake Street and Chestnut Street, proceeds down Chestnut Street toward Main Street and onto Main Street to the Baseball Hall of Fame. The Parade of Legends will feature more than 4 dozen returning Hall of Famers as well as Class of 2023 members Fred McGriff and Scott Rolen. The Induction Weekend will conclude with the inductions of McGriff and Rolen Sunday at 1:30 at the Clark Sports Center.

State DEC Officers have charged an unidentified man in Roxbury for illegally shooting a bear at the Stratton Falls Campground in the town of Roxbury July 10th. DEC Officers found the dead bear hidden under a swimming pool in a backyard on the property, the man admitted to shooting the bear as it was walking by his home. The unidentified man was charged with shooting and killing a bear illegally, killing a bear out of season, and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling, the tickets are returnable to the Town of Roxbury Court.

The Delaware County IRT Military Medical program concluded on Wednesday, after 9 days of services offered for free at the Walton High School. The military was able to serve 1,079 patients, performing 7,181 procedures for a total cost savings to the community of $585,141.81. Delaware County Director of Planning & Watershed Affairs Director Shelly Johnson Bennett said that Delaware County will apply again in the future to bring these needed Medical, Dental, Vision & Veterinary services back to the County.

A.M. NEWS FRIDAY 7-21-23

43 year old Thomas Stanley of New Berlin appeared in Delaware County Court Thursday & was arraigned on a sealed indictment. The 6 count indictments was unsealed, the Indictment alleges that Stanley intended to sell the heroin, fentanyl, and methamphetamine that was discovered in the trunk of a car on April 30, 2023, in the Village of Sidney. After being arraigned, Stanley was released from custody under the supervision of the Delaware County Probation Department, each of the felonies carry a maximum 9-year sentence. The Village of Sidney Police arrested Stanley Thursday for 3 counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Federal prosecutors have filed hate crime charges against 18-year-old Payton Gendron of Conklin, he is accused of killing 10 people & injuring 3 others in a Buffalo Tops Supermarket in a predominantly black neighborhood on May 14th. Gendron faces 26 counts of hate crimes and firearms offenses, he charges include 10 counts of hate crimes resulting in death, three counts of hate crimes involving bodily injury and attempt to kill, 10 counts of using a firearm to commit murder during and in retaliation to a crime of violence and three counts of using and discharging of a firearm during and in retaliation to a crime of violence.

Local sales tax collections in New York state increased by 16.7% in May compared to the same month in 2021, according to an analysis released today by State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli. Overall, local collections totaled $1.7 billion, up $242 million from May of last year. Every county also experienced double-digit growth in collections, at least partially due to recent high inflation, including soaring gas prices. Yates County saw the largest increase at 34.8% in May. Among cities that impose their own general sales tax, the City of Oneida came in at the highest at 30.9%.

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 41 year old Dezarae Yother of Morris after an investigation into a disabled vehicle in Pittsfield. Yother allegedly forged and attempted to use a stolen check to pay for services in Morris. Yother faces charges of forgery, Possession of a Forged Instrument, Possession of Stolen Property in Morris, and Inadequate Exhaust, Unsafe Tire, Improper Plates, Unregistered Motor Vehicle, Uninspected Motor Vehicle, and Operating without Insurance in Pittsfield.

The State Health Department reports that the decline in COVID 19 cases is continuing. Statewide 7-Day Average positivity rate is Lowest Since mid -April at 5.4%, Statewide Hospitalizations were below 2000 to 1,938, down from a recent peak of 2724 in Mid May. there were 38 deaths reported over the weekend in Hospitals & nursing homes.

The Greater Oneonta Historical Society Walking Tour Series kicks off tonight, as Oneonta natives Liz Rowley Morley and Art Torrey lead their tour of Main Street in the late 1960s. This tour coincides with the opening of Remembering Oneonta in the 1960s this weekend, Society Executive Director Dr. Marcela Micucci explains:

35 year old Tadd Sherwood of Oneonta has been arrested after he allegedly pointed a gun at a victim during a dispute and fired a shot in the victim’s direction. Sherwood was charged with criminal possession of a loaded firearm, menacing, and criminal possession of a weapon, Sherwood is a convicted felon & is not legally allowed to possess weapons, he is being held in the Otsego County Jail pending future court action.

State Police arrested 6 people, for allegedly possessing guns and illegal magazines that are not compliant with the New York SAFE Act. Troopers initiated a traffic stop on Upper Front Street in the town of Chenango, they arrested 39 year old Jeffrey Everetts of Sayre, Pennsylvania & 32 year old Nephrem Holt of Albany for Criminal Possession of a Weapon, another traffic stop on Upper Front Street in the town of Chenango resulted in the arrest of 4 men from Pennsylvania, 56 year old Robert Applegate II, 31 year old Robert Applegate III, 28 year old Glen Applegate, & 29 year old Trevor Sweigart, All 6 were arraigned and were remanded to the Broome County Jail without bail.

4 people were injured & 2 pets were killed in a house fire at 127 Walnut Street in Binghamton early this morning. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The State DEC reported that there were over 211,000 deer harvested during the 2021-22 hunting season, which is a 17% decrease from the previous Hunting Season’s numbers. Officials said that some reasons for the decline was the resurgence of a Disease in Deer in certain regions of the State and the overall lower number of Deer Management Permits that were granted to prospective hunters. Patient Hospitalizations are over 2700 & there were 27 more deaths in Hospitals & nursing homes Tuesday. The CDC Reports over 71,000 New Yorkers have died from COVID.

PEF is one of the largest unions in the United States and is New York’s second-largest state-employee union, representing 54,000 workers. The three-year contract agreement includes a 2 percent increase in 2016-17, 2 percent increase in 2017-18 and a 2 percent increase in 2018-19. Both the state and PEF agree to work together on a plan to reduce out-of-control healthcare costs. Other elements of the contract will be released shortly. The contract must now be approved by its Executive Board and ratified by its membership.

Oneonta Police responded to a possible drug overdoese death on Orchard Street on Tuesday. 45 year old Matthew Hill was found deceased in his apartment where drugs were located, he had been arrested in August by Oneonta Police on drug charges.

Governor Cuomo today announced that State Park campgrounds set a new record for attendance for the fifth consecutive year. Through Columbus Day, campsites, cabins and cottages across the state were occupied for more than 633,000 nights, surpassing 2015’s record of 623,891 nights. State Park camping occupancy has climbed nearly 17 percent since 2009.

We ask that people remain vigilant and make sure that they do not leave anything of value in their vehicles as well as keeping their vehicles locked.
