Johnson City Police were called Sunday afternoon to the Oakdale Commons to check the welfare of a male subject who was believed to be intoxicated and was attempting to break into vehicles. 20-year-old Rajee Almashni of Binghamton is accused of trying to flee a police officer in a vehicle at a high rate of speed, striking 72 year old Elizabeth Atkinson of Johnson City. Additional officers responded & Almashni’s vehicle became disabled and he fled on foot, he was located and was taken into custody. Atkinson was taken to Wilson Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. Almashni was charged with DWI, 2nd degree murder, Vehicular manslaughter, Leaving the scene of a fatal motor vehicle accident, Unlawful fleeing, Reckless endangerment & Grand Larceny, Almashni is being held at Broome County central arraignment awaiting processing

A Chenango County Grand Jury indicted 50-year-old Andrew Frank Jr. on several charges for a series of commercial break-ins in downtown Sherburne in November & December of last year. Frank and 49-year-old Rena Jones were arrested by the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office on December 7, Frank was indicted on 3 counts of 3rd degree burglary, 3 counts of criminal mischief, & 1 count of attempt burglary, and 3 counts of petty larceny. Jones has been indicted with for 3rd degree burglary, for her role in 1 of the burglaries. Frank was arraigned in court and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility with no bail. Rena was released on an appearance ticket for Village of Sherburne Court.

This coming Sunday, March 12th it will be Daylight Saving Time, & New Yorkers will set their clocks forward one hour. The Firefighters Association of the State of New York is urging everyone to check their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors at that time. Homeowners with alarms that have sealed, non-removable batteries should test the alarms to see if they are functional and check their expiration dates. Alarms equipped with removable batteries should have their batteries replaced and then test the alarm. New York State currently leads the nation in home fire deaths, with 36 deaths in the first two months of 2023, more information is available at fasny.com and nfpa.org.

The Broome County District Attorney’s Office announced that Benjamin Forestier pleaded guilty to felony Aggravated Family Offense, for violating an Order of Protection which prohibited him from having contact with a 32-year-old woman. Forestier ignored the order and sent several harassing text messages to her, he had previously been convicted of Criminal Mischief for damaging the property of the same victim in 2021 & he has a prior felony conviction for Criminal Possession of a Weapon from 2019. Forestier will spend 1.5 to 3 years in state prison, when sentenced at a later date.

Broome County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a motor vehicle accident on Ouaquaga Road in the Town of Colesville Thursday. 35-year-old Tina Harb of Harpursville lost control of her car and collided with a car that was parked off the roadway, her 9-year-old daughter was in the car during the accident and sustained minor injuries & she was taken to Wilson Hospital. Harb displayed several signs of impairment, she had alcoholic beverages in her vehicle and her purse, plus she refused a field sobriety test and was charged with felony DWI, Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated With a Child, Endangering the Welfare of a Child plus other charges, she was released on an appearance ticket and will return to the Town of Colesville Court at a later date.

Attorney General Letitia James took action to crack down on rampant robocalls and protect consumers nationwide. Attorney General James joined a coalition of 50 attorneys general to form a nationwide, bipartisan Anti-Robocall Litigation Taskforce to investigate and take legal action against companies responsible for enabling a majority of foreign robocalls into the United States. Dunkin’ Donuts announced that their annual Go for the Gold initiative, held at more than a dozen locations in the Southern Tier last Thursday, raised $51,832 for Special Olympics New York. During the event, Special Olympics New York athletes and coaches were joined by local law enforcement partners to collect donations at participating Dunkin’ Donuts locations, the Sidney location collected over $1900 Thursday.

The CDC reports that New York has the majority of confirmed monkeypox cases in the United States, with 1,345 cases, out of the more than 5,100 cases in the country. The next highest is California, which reported 799 cases of the virus.

Federal authorities are investigating a single engine plane crash on Saturday, afternoon in Palantine in Montgomery County. The State Police initial investigation determined that a mechanical failure occurred, the pilot sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was air lifted to Albany Medical Center by LifeNet. No other injuries were reported. The investigation into the accident is continuing.

State Lawmakers are continuing to re-word legislation before the end of the 2019 session that may legalize recreational Marijuana in New York State.  The New York State Sheriff’s Association opposes that idea, Delaware County Sheriff Craig Dumond comments:

An amended marijuana legalization bill was introduced on Friday to echo Governor Cuomo’s original proposal, which would include the forming of the Office of Cannabis Management to regulate commercial and medical marijuana.

26-year-old Haylery Rodriguez of Johnson City was issued tickets Friday for Unlicensed Operator and 7 improper restraint tickets.  State Police responded to the report of a several children rising unrestrained in a vehicle leaving the Tioga Downs.  A trooper stopped the vehicle on State Route 17 & discovered 12 people in a vehicle that seats 7.  7 children ranging from ages 3 to 11 that were not in child seats, booster seats or even belted in the vehicle & Rodriguez was driving with only a learner’s permit and did not have a licensed driver in the vehicle. The trooper stayed with the vehicle for 2 1/2 hours to ensure everyone in the vehicle was picked up by a licensed driver with the proper safety equipment.

The Pennsylvania-New York Joint Interstate Bridge Commission will conduct its annual meeting today at the Binghamton State Office Building, 44 Hawley Street. The meeting will be held on the 18th floor and scheduled to begin at 10:00 AM, Representatives from the State DOT and the Pennsylvania DOT will discuss matters related to the 10 bridges crossing the Delaware River to Pike and Wayne counties in Pennsylvania.  The meeting is open to the public.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies issued 37 year old Joel Klinegardner of Sidney Center 25 Traffic Tickets as a result of an investigation into Commercial Vehicle Accident on May 31st on Pines Brook Road in the Town of Walton. The initial investigation stated that Klinegardner lost control, the truck struck a sign, the trailer detached & overturned in a parking lot, the truck struck a tree before coming to rest. Klinegardner was issued tickets for violations including Operating A Commercial Vehicle Without a Commercial Driver’s License, Inoperable Brake, worn tires, Inoperable Required Lamps, Switched Trailer Plate, Improper Heavy Machine Securement, Moved From Lane Unsafely, Speed Not Reasonable and Prudent, and Failure To Stop At A Stop Sign. Klinegardner is scheduled to appear at Walton Town Court at a later date to answer the charges.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a report of an ATV rollover accident in the Town of Walton involving two individuals. 30 year old John Wright of New Jersey was operating an ATV without a helmet and in an intoxicated condition while 26 year old Alaire Houck of New Jersey was a passenger on the ATV. Both were transported to Delaware Valley Hospital for further treatment. Wright was issued tickets for Operating an ATV while intoxicated, as well as Operating an ATV without a helmet, He faces action in Town of Walton Court at a later date.

The Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force arrested 3 people on various drug charges after they executed a search warrant in Binghamton Tuesday. Police seized heroin, crack cocaine, digital scales and packaging materials, they arrested 37 year old Jack Whitehead, 38 year old Nicole Brown & 31 year old Brandy Henniger are due to be arraigned in Binghamton City Court.

State Police arrested 52 year old Wilberto Solivan of Binghamton for Driving While Ability Impaired by Alcohol or Drugs and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance. A trooper observed Sollivan commit several traffic violations, Sollivan was determined to be impaired and crack cocaine was located in his possession, he was arrested then released on appearance tickets returnable to the city of Binghamton Court on July 9th.

State Police arrested 47 year old Shannon Coleman of Smithville for 2 counts of Criminal Contempt and Harassment, after a victim made a report that Coleman violated an order of protection on several occasions. Coleman was arrested & was arraigned in the town of Smithville Court and released on her own recognizance. She is scheduled to reappear on July 24th.
