The United States Department of Justice announced that 54 year old David VanHousen of Newark Valley was sentenced to 13 years in prison for possessing child porn. VanHousen previously pleaded guilty to the crime and admitted while civilly committed at the Central New York Psychiatric Center, following several sex offenses and child pornography-related convictions, he possessed numerous images and videos of child pornography on a contraband cell phone. VanHousen was convicted in 2001 for sexual misconduct and rape in the third degree and transportation of child pornography in federal court. VanHousen will also serve a life term of supervised release following his release from prison, and he must register as a sex offender.

State Police issued 18,375 tickets statewide during the ‘Spring Safe Driving’ enforcement, from April 9th to April 14th. State Police focused on speeding, aggressive driving, distracted driving and the Move Over law. Statewide, Troopers issued over 6800 tickets for Speeding, almost 1100 for distracted driving, 337 for the Move Over Law, In Troop C, Troopers issued 1120 tickets during the enforcement period.

A.M. NEWS FRIDAY 4-19-24

Broome County District Attorney’s office announced that 40 year old Carheem Felton of Binghamton was sentenced in Broome County Court to 9 years in New York State Prison, followed by 5 years of post-release supervision for Criminal Possession of a weapon. On the 2nd of August 2022, Felton opened fire at another individual at the Northside Deli on Chenango Street in Binghamton. The Binghamton Police Department investigated the shooting and located Felton fleeing the scene while still in possession of the firearm.

State Police executed a search warrant on Center Street in the town of Oneonta relative to a child pornography investigation. An investigation determined that a 17-year-old at the residence obtained numerous images of child pornography on a cell phone, the suspect was arraigned in Otsego County Youth Part Court and released on charges of Possessing and Promoting a Child Sexual Performance. The investigation is ongoing.

The Village of Sidney Police Department responded yesterday afternoon at about 2:50 PM, to the report of a unconscious female lying in the middle of Sunset Avenue. Police were advised that the female had been struck by a vehicle, 14 year old Anielle McEwan-Lomnicki was transported to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City & was transferred to SUNY Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse where she remains in stable but critical condition with bleeding & pressure on the brain, an upper spine fracture & fractured ribs according to family, The driver, 31 year old Courtni Baker of Sidney left the scene and returned a short time later, she was charged with Aggravated DWI, with a BAC of .18 or higher, plus DWI, Leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, Reckless Driving, Vehicular Assault & Escape for allegedly attempting to leave the Police Station, along with several other lesser charges. Baker was arraigned in the Town of Delhi court where she was remanded to the Delaware County Jail without bail. The investigation is ongoing which could result in more charges being filed.

The Tioga County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that 3 people died and another was hospitalized after they were hit by a car in Newark Valley Wednesday afternoon. According to the Sheriff’s Office, an 18-year-old man was driving south on State Route 38 around 11:20 am Wednesday and hit 4 pedestrians walking on the shoulder. 66 year old John Stephens, 25 year old Kurtis Acker & 52 year old Doreen Wood were killed, a 27-year-old woman was flown to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse in critical condition. All 4 pedestrians were from Newark Valley.

The Broome County District Attorney’s office announced that 37 year old Ronald Bodden of Binghamton pleaded guilty to promoting prison contraband in Broome County Court. Bodden admitted that he possessed methamphetamines while in the County Jail on an unrelated charge, he will serve 2 to 4 years in prison on the new charges starting on March 23rd.

19 year old Payton Gendron of Conklin was sentenced to life in prison without parole yesterday, for the mass shooting of 10 people in May of 2022 at a Tops grocery store in Buffalo. Gendron pleaded guilty in November to 15 charges, including murder, attempted murder & Domestic Terrorism motivated by Hate in a state court room, today Gendron faces Federal Court action, if convicted on the federal charges, he could face the death penalty.

State Police arrested 44 year old Rodney Oakley of Plymouth, for Scheming to Defraud, 5 counts of 4th degree Grand Larceny & 8 counts of Petty Larceny. State Police received a report last November that Oakley, who was the town Highway Department Superintendent, was allegedly using town money for his own personal use, it was determined that since December 2020 Oakley allegedly had been using town funds to purchase various car parts, tools and materials for his own personal use, he was issued an appearance for the town of Plymouth Court on February 22nd.

The Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, is asking for those who attended the original Woodstock Music & Arts festival at that site in 1969, to come forward & share their story. The Center is conducting its “Oral Histories Project” to document the memories of fans who attended the event. Curators from The Museum will be traveling around the country to interview those who attended. The Oral Histories Project began in 2020; over 18,00 stories have been documented. The Delaware County District Attorney’s Office announced that 40 year old Adam Bright of East Meredith entered a Guilty Plea in a Vehicular Manslaughter Case. Bright pleaded guilty to 1 count of Vehicular Manslaughter and 1 count of Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs, in Delaware County Court this week, Bright admitted that he was using methamphetamine while driving & that he crossed the double yellow line and hit a milk truck head on, killing his passenger. Bright faces a state prison term of 1-3 years on the Vehicular Manslaughter charge, he will be sentenced to 364 days in jail for driving while his ability was impaired by drugs, which will run concurrently to the previous sentence. Bright was remanded to the custody of the Delaware County Sheriff’s office, without bail, pending sentencing.

At least 3 people were killed in a crash in Newark Valley This Morning. The Tioga County Sheriff’s Office reported that a vehicle traveling along Route 38 struck several pedestrians, at least 1 person was taken by a medial; helicopter to an unidentified trauma center, The Sheriff’s Office will release more information following family notification.

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 25 year old Alexis Damulis of Burlington following a traffic stop on February 7th in the Town of Edmeston. Damulis was charged with Operating a Motor Vehicle with a suspended or revoked registration, Failure to comply & Driving on the shoulder among other charges, Damulis is accused of failing to stop for police, she was taken into custody after pulling into a driveway, she faces court action in the Town of Edmeston court at a later date.

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 38 year old Tristan Buss of Utica following a traffic stop on February 2, 2023 in the Town of Edmeston. Buss was charged with Aggravated Unlicensed Operator, Forged Inspection among other charges, He is scheduled to appear in the Town of Edmeston Court on a later date.

Broome County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested 45 year old John Turner of the town of Dickinson. Turner was stopped for an expired vehicle inspection, he fled from deputies on foot, he allegedly attempted to dispose of methamphetamine crystals, Deputies caught Turner and recovered 11.3 grams of methamphetamines. Turner allegedly attempted to consume a large portion of the narcotics, he was transported to Binghamton General Hospital, after release he was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Tampering with Physical Evidence, and Obstructing Governmental Administration, plus 2 traffic violation, he was processed and issued an appearance ticket to answer for his charges in the Town of Dickinson Court.

Murray admitted that on March 26, 2022, in the Village of Endicott he illegally possessed a loaded 9 millimeter pistol, during a traffic stop of a vehicle that he was a passenger in.

Local sales tax collections across New York grew 6% in the first 6 months of 2018, according to a report released today by State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. Tax collections totaled $8.5 billion compared to $8 billion during the same period last year. The New Jersey Devils have named Mark Dennehy as the Head Coach of the Binghamton Devils today. Dennehy had accepted a position in Wheeling earlier this summer as Head Coach/Director of Hockey Operations, after being relieved of his duties at Merrimack College, where he had coached for 13 years where he won 161 games & was credited with turning the hockey program around. Norwich City Police are reminding area residents to lock up their vehicles, following a series of vehicle break-ins. Police reported that 15 vehicles have been broken into in the last 3 days alone. Police also suggest bringing valuables inside, and not leaving them in plain view in the vehicle.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office was alerted of an alleged abduction last night at about 9:30 PM in Smithville Flats. This morning, the victim, 20 year old Katelyn Nielsen of Smithville Flats, the suspect 46 year old Calvin Burlingame of Newark Valley & his vehicle were all located in Broome County. Deputies reported that Nielsen was unharmed, the investigation is continuing, anyone with information can call 337-1863.

State Police have made an additional arrest in regards to the missing juvenile; Amanda Putorti of Richmondville. 37 year old Nicole Briggs of Preston Hollow was charged with Obstructing Governmental Administration and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Briggs was arrested along with John Winnie and Jeremy Schaefer in relation to this case; State Police were assisted by several area law enforcement agencies. Briggs, Schaefer & Winnie were released on appearance tickets returnable to the Town of Rensselaerville Court at a later date. The investigation is still ongoing.

The City of Oneonta Airport Commission will hold 3 special meetings over the next 2 weeks in the Common Council Chambers at City Hall. The only item on the agenda for each of these meetings is the interview of representatives of firms who had responded to the City’s request for proposals for provision of airport-consultant services for the next 5 years. State Police are investigating an accidental drowning on Canadarago Lake Monday last night. The victim is identified as 19-year-old Dustin Groat of Jordanville. Troopers responded at about 9:45 PM Monday, they learned that 2 teenagers were on separate kayaks, they each capsized and one was missing in the water. The investigation revealed that as the storm approached, the teens began to paddle back to the boat launch but Groat’s kayak capsized; he was not wearing a floatation device. The other unidentified teen was unable to find Groat & went back to the shore and call for help. The investigation is continuing.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office has released the names of the 2 people who died in a Motorcycle accident on June 16th on State Route 26 in the Town of Nanticoke. The deceased motorcyclists have been identified as 41 year old Kathryn Schultheis of Binghamton and 39 year old Brandy Lynn of Newark Valley. Deputies said that the operator of the pick-up truck was 35 year old Sarah Robbins of Whitney Point, she was not injured, and the accident is still under investigation.

State Police arrested 23 year old Khalil Derios Jr of Oneonta, for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance. Derios was stopped after he pulled through a checkpoint on State Route 7 in the town of Oneonta, a search yielded crack cocaine in Derios’s possession, he was arrested and issued an appearance ticket returnable to the town of Oneonta Court for today.

State Police arrested 32 year old Brandy Hodge of Greene for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a motor vehicle and Unlawful Possession of Marihuana. Troopers observed Hodge operating a portable electronic device while driving on State Highway 12 in the town of Greene, she was stopped and search uncovered marijuana, her license was also found to be suspended. Hodge was arrested and issued appearance tickets for town of Greene Court on Thursday.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office responded Friday to a fatal motorcycle crash in Colesville on Cafferty Road. 57-year-old Keith Bernhardsen of Harpursville was located in a field on the side of the road, he was transported Bernhardsen to Wilson Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Bernhardsen attempted to make a left turn and the motorcycle went off the road into the field.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 36 year old Scott Johnson of Sidney Center for DWI, Aggravated DWI, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation, Endangering the Welfare of a Child, plus several other charges, Johnson is accused of operating a motor vehicle in an intoxicated state with 2 children in his vehicle in the Town of Masonville. Johnson held a conditional license and was operating his vehicle outside of the restrictions; he was arraigned in the Town of Masonville Court, and remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility on $2,500 cash bail, or $5,000 bond pending court action at a later date.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 28 year old Cesar Ortiz of Palms Springs Florida, on charges of driving while intoxicated, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle 3rd degree, and failure to keep right. Ortiz was arranged in Town of Delhi Court and sent to the Delaware County Correctional Facility on $1000 cash or $2000 bond and is to reappear in Town of Hamden Court at a later date. Deputies were assisted by members of the Walton Police Dept.

Oneonta Department of Public Service announced that crews will be flushing water mains in the high service area starting 9 am to 4 pm, today. Affected areas include: Homer Folks Ave., Overlook Drive, Suncrest Terrace, College Terrace, West St. Ravine Parkway and the streets north of SUNY Oneonta. Flushing in these areas is expected to be completed this week, with flushing in other areas to continue the following week. Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies & the State Division of Parole located and arrested 33 year old John Barnett of Margaretville & charged him with being a Fugitive from Justice. Barnett was wanted from the Prince Edward County, Virginia Sheriff’s Office on 5 counts of Violation of Probation for failure to pay restitution following burglary and larceny convictions. Barnett was arraigned and was remanded to the Delaware County Jail without bail pending extradition to the State of Virginia.

Governor Cuomo today announced grant awards totaling $2.3 million for urban forestry projects in communities across New York. The grants are funded through the state Environmental Protection Fund and are part of New York’s ongoing initiatives to address invasive species, climate change and environmental justice. Delaware County Sheriff’s Office and K-9 Ozzie assisted the Delaware County Corrections Officers with a routine Jail Search, which revealed that William Effner was in possession of a powdery substance believed a crushed prescription medication, that he may have acquired from another inmate. Investigators arrested Effner for Promoting Prison Contraband; he will be arraigned on the charges in the Village of Delhi Court Tuesday.

The Tioga County Sheriff’s Office responded to a tractor-trailer rollover accident on Dalton Hill Road in Newark Valley Tuesday afternoon. The accident occurred at about 2:40 PM, The operator of the vehicle has been identified as 60-year-old Richard Henry of Bainbridge. Henry was pronounced dead at the scene.

State Police arrested 25 year old James Sayman of Harpursville, 20 year old Ian Albrechta of Port Crane, and 24 year old Jordan Ryder of Afton for 3rd degree automobile stripping, after troopers responded to a report of a car parts being stolen from a parked 2004 Lincoln in a residential driveway on Oak Hill Road in the town of Afton. Sayman, Albrechta and Ryder allegedly jacked up the vehicle & removed parts. All 3 were issued tickets returnable to the Town of Afton court on February 29th.

State Police arrested 27-year-old Joshua Mizell of Johnson City, for menacing and criminal mischief, after a dispute in the Town of Newark Valley. Mizell allegedly waved a knife around, threatened another person & damaged a tire on a car by stabbing it with this knife. Mizell was arraigned and was remanded to the Tioga County Jail in lieu of $500 cash bail or $1,000 property bond.

Deputies investigated a 2-car personal injury car accident on State Route 10 in the Town of Kortright. 26-year-old Daniel Hitchcock of South Kortright failed to yield right of way to a vehicle traveling on Route 10 operated by 23-year-old Edward Wilson, Hitchcock’s vehicle struck Wilson’s vehicle and it overturned. Hitchcock was ticketed for failure to yield right of way and he will appear in Town of Kortright Court at a later date.

50-year-old Larry Servedio of Endicott was indicted in Broome County Court last week on rape & kidnapping charges. Servedio faces 24 counts, which included 1st degree kidnapping, rape, harassment, criminal mischief, & menacing, for alleged attacks on 2 women he met through the LinkedIn social media site, where he claimed to be with the FBI. Servedio is accused of raping a woman from Wisconsin, and forcing her to tell family that she was not returning home, against her will, her family filed a missing persons report. Servedio is being held without bail in the Broome County Jail.

Otsego County held its 18th annual Hazardous Waste Collection Day this past weekend. On Friday morning, a satellite event was held at the Unadilla Town Highway garage, where approximately 90 cars dropped of hazardous material. The main event was held on Saturday at the Meadows Office Complex with approximately 390 cars dropping off hazardous materials from estimated 400 households. A total of about 500 households took advantage of the free program.

Police agencies in Tioga County executed a search warrant in Newark Valley, leading to the seizure of an active meth-amphetamine lab and the arrest of 6 people.   Charged were 23 year old Scott Cole, of Newark Valley, 29 year old Jamie Swackhammer of Newark Valley, 31 year old Bryan Burkard of Berkshire, 48 year old Theresa Cochran of Caroline, 23 year old Kara Smithgall, of Endicott, & 28 year old Melanie Short of Berkshire.  police executed a search warrant at the Cole and Swackhammer residence Tuesday at 5:00 PM and confiscated items used to  manufacture methamphetamine, all were charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance; they were arraigned and remanded to the Tioga County Jail without bail.  Further charges are pending and the investigation is continuing.

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman today issued an open letter to doctors, pharmacists and other medical professionals alerting them that the prescription painkiller hydrocodone is now a Schedule II controlled substance under New York State law.  The change was mandated as part of Attorney General Schneiderman’s I-STOP law, which creates an online database that enables doctors and pharmacists to report and track controlled narcotic substances in real time by the Internet.   The I-STOP database, be mandated to use starting this August.  More information is available at health.ny.gov/professionals/narcotic.

The legislature has until April 1st to get the budget completed, Cuomo & the legislature have decreased the budgets the previous 2 years, this year’s budget starts out at 134 Billion dollars, it could add another 1.5 billion depending on federal aid that the state might get for Hurricane Sandy related issues.

The Owego Fire Department confirmed that Captain Matthew Porcari was killed and Firefighter Daniel Gavin was injured, after a floor collapsed at a house fire in Newark Valley.  Porcari died in the fire, Gavin suffered burns & was taken to Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City & was then transferred to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse.  The Owego Fire Department had responded to a call for mutual aid to the fire at 871 Chamberlain Road in Newark Valley, the fire was reported just before 11:00 PM last night.

Officials at the state university on Oneonta reported that 56 students who were living on the 3rd floor of Matteson Hall have been able to remove their belongings and have been moved to other dorms on the campus, since last weeks fire.  121 students who had been living on the 1st & 2nd floor are being housed temporarily at the Holiday Inn on Route 23 Southside; officials expect that they will be able to move back into their dorms rooms before the weekend.  The fire was started last Wednesday by a defective power strip in a 3rd floor dorm room, officials said that the 3rd floor will be closed for the remainder of the semester for clean up and renovation.

The U.S. Department of Education reported that the New York graduation rates increased to 76% in the 2009-2010 year, an increase from 61% percent in 2002-2003.  The graduation rate was 78 percent nationally.  The survey reported that New York’s dropout rate was 3.6%, compared to 3.4% percent nationally, and an improvement by almost 2% since 2002-2003.

State Troopers in Greene arrested 27-year-old Dustin Curtis of Smithville Flats for Felony DWI, 1st degree Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Vehicle, 4th degree Criminal Mischief and Unlawful Possession of Marihuana. The arrest resulted from a domestic dispute investigation; Curtis was arraigned and sent to Chenango County Jail on $10,000 bail pending a felony hearing.
