State Police were called Tuesday afternoon to Castle Creek Road in the town of Chenango for a report of a car versus motorcycle fatal accident. The preliminary investigation determined that 31 year old Joseph Portorsnok of Binghamton, was turning left onto Castle Creek Road when he entered the path of a motorcycle, driven by 20 year old Kaitlynn Eaton of Castle Creek, who collided into Portorsnok. Police said that Eaton died at the scene. The investigation is ongoing.

The Broome County District Attorney’s Office announced that 38 year old Jeremiah Raub of New Milford Pennsylvania was released on $150,000 bail. Raub was charged with murder and arson in connection with a fatal house fire on Milford Street in Binghamton in 2011 that killed 17 year old Jeffrey Aissa, he was arrested by Binghamton Police last Month. Raub was placed on a pre-release program and will be monitored by Broome County Probation through a GPS ankle monitor, His next court date is scheduled for May 15th, the investigation into the fire remains active.

The event will be held at East & West Parks in Norwich, at 10:00 AM the West Park event will be held for children up to age 4, & there will be a 10:30 AM start time at East Park for Ages 5 to 8.

State Police released their update on the reported abduction of Tatiana David in Ithaca Wednesday. A witness reported that David was forced into a white SUV by the suspect, 34 year old Michael Davis of Richmond, Virginia against her will. An endangered adult alert was issued by State Police, They said that the victim and the suspect were in a previous relationship and have a 4-year-old child together. At 9:25 pm, Davis’s vehicle was detected crossing into the State of Virginia, Virginia State Police stopped the vehicle, at which time Davis fled the scene, leading Virginia State Police on a pursuit which ended when the suspect vehicle crashed in a wooded area at 10:05 PM. Davis began firing at Virginia State Police, who returned fire, Davis was critically wounded and was taken to an area Hospital and is in critical condition, Tatiana David was located deceased outside the vehicle at the crash location with an apparent gunshot wound, her autopsy was scheduled last night, the results will be released shortly, the investigation is continuing.

Broome County Sheriff’s Correctional Facility announced that 26 year old Tymel Platt of Binghamton is facing 6 felony charges for smuggling Cocaine and Fentanyl within the facility. The Corrections Criminal Investigations Unit acted on information that Platt was in possession of contraband, his body was scanned which revealed an item hidden on his person, they recovered 2 smaller packages, with Cocaine & 4.1 grams of Fentanyl, which is capable of killing 205 people. Platt was charged with 4 counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance & 2 Counts of Promoting Prison Contraband, Platt was incarcerated on assault charges, he will be arraigned at a later date in the Town of Dickinson Court.

The United Way of Mid Rural New York officially expanded into Madison County on April 1st, making the local United Way chapter a 4 county chapter. Executive Director Elizabeth Monaco told WCDO News that the move into Madison County will present different challenges than the recent expansion into Delaware & Otsego Counties did:

Delaware County Public Health reported they 55th COVID-19 death on Monday.  Delaware County Public Health’s reported 52 new COVID positive cases Saturday through Monday, they have 152 active cases, 6 hospitalized and 248 quarantined. The county has recorded 3,338 cases with 3131 recoveries since the pandemic began.

The State DEC announced that the State’s new catch-and-release trout stream season begins on October 16th, as part of the DEC’s Statewide Trout Stream Management Plan.  The new season runs until March 31st of next year & requires anglers to use only artificial lures and immediately release trout they catch. Chobani and the Utica based non-profit Compassion Coalition donated & delivered $29,000 worth of food and supplies to help 4 local backpack programs in Central New York last week.  Chobani distributed more than 1,200 cases of their products to the Edmeston Central School, Unadilla Valley School District, Sherburne-Earlville Central School, and Norwich City Schools, to restock school food pantries, which helps to feed more than 200 children and their families throughout the year.  Chobani also announced that they are sending 200,000 Chobani products to those affected by Hurricane Ida; this follows a recent delivery of 100,000 products to Afghan evacuees in temporary housing across the country, and the US servicemen and women supporting them.

State Police arrested 24 year old David Kemp of Eaton for using a fake COVID 19 Vaccination card, after his employer turned him in.  Kemp could face 7 years in prison after being charged with possession of a forged instrument & the unauthorized use of a government agency’s seal on the fake card makes it a federal crime.

A.M. NEWS TUESDAY 10-5-21

State Police have identified the deceased individual shot by a Walton Police Officer as 66 year old Paul Weeden of Walton.  On Monday Morning, an officer from the Walton Police Department was dispatched to a mental health call on Griswold Street, the officer made contact with Weeden, who pointed what was believed to be a gun at the officer, the officer retreated, Weeden followed & ignored multiple commands to drop his weapon, he again pointed the suspected gun at the officer, who fired his weapon and struck Weeden.  The officer called for EMS and rendered emergency aid, Weeden was pronounced dead at the scene.  The investigation is continuing.

Dylan Robinson was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison in Otsego County Court on Monday, for the murder of his father, Kenneth Robinson in Worcester in October 2019.  Robinson & several others were accused of going to Kenneth Robinson’s home to steal money & marijuana, it escalated to the killing of the elder Robinson & attempting to burn the house down to cover up the crimes.  Robinson was convicted after a 3 day trial in June.

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced State agencies, cities, towns, and Indian Tribal governments can now apply for federal funding  to assist with mitigation projects designed to strengthen resiliency against future national disasters. The application period is open through November 30th using FEMA GO online. The State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services will review the applications and assist applicants with questions on the process.

State health department tested over 173,000 New Yorkers Tuesday, with 6265 testing positive, or 3.6% of all tested.  41 died from the virus Tuesday, the state death toll is 26,482 & 2982 are hospitalized.

Chenango County Public Health continues to see smaller increases in COVID 19 cases; they reported 72 Active Cases, 5 hospitalizations & 410 Quarantines.  Chenango County reported 20 more cases since Monday, they have had 583 Confirmed Cases since March, with 503 Recoveries & over 43,400 Tests have been performed.

Broome County Health Department reported 85 more cases of COVID 19 today; they have had a total of 4937 cases.  They report 116 deaths, 4202 recoveries & about 2900 are being monitored by the department.

State Police and local law enforcement agencies are participating in a special traffic enforcement initiative to crack down on unsafe driving behaviors during the Thanksgiving holiday, starting today through Sunday.   State Police will supplement regular patrols statewide with fixed sobriety checkpoints, underage drinking enforcement, and the “Operation Hang Up” initiative, which targets distracted drivers by utilizing Concealed Identity patrols. The Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee & the STOP-DWI Foundation remind motorists that their “Have a Plan” mobile app is available, locate and call for a taxi or rideshare service.

Rockefeller the Owl was released back into the wild early this morning.  The owl made the trip from West Oneonta to New York City on the tree that will be the official Rockefeller Center Christmas tree this year, the owl was found by workers & was turned over to the Ravensbeard Wildlife Center in Saugerties, it is expected to acclimate itself to the local Owl Population.

Oswego State Supreme Court Justice Scott DelConte has ordered an injunction stopping the review of ballots in the 22nd Congressional District race between Anthony Brindisi & Claudia Tenney.  Judge DelConte stated that any new motions need to be filed by the campaigns’ attorneys by 5:00 p.m. Monday, November 30th; however, the State Board of Elections set a deadline of November 28th for county boards of elections to certify and transmit their election returns to the state.  Tenney was leading Brindisi by about 200 votes when the counting of absentee ballots was stopped.

Otsego County Department of Health reported 21 new COVID 19 Cases reported Tuesday, 42 recent cases are linked to the Copper Fox in Oneonta, the department also reports a Potential exposure to COVID at the Red Jug Pub on Friday November 20th, patrons at that time should monitor for symptoms until December 4th.  Currently, Otsego County has had 1236 total confirmed cases, with 115 active cases, 6 hospitalized; there have been 8 deaths since March.  764 cases are linked to SUNY Oneonta & 71 confirmed cases linked to Hartwick College

Oneonta City School District announced that they have learned of a 5th staff member COVID 19 positive case & 1 confirmed case in a student. All District schools will go fully remote until Tuesday, January 19th & then return to hybrid instruction on January 19th.  81 students are in quarantine & 27 staff members are also in quarantine.   Meal distribution will continue to take place at the designated meal distribution points on Wednesdays.

Delaware County Public Health announced that they had 9 more cases of COVID 19 Tuesday, with 5 hospitalizations, 49 active cases & 222 in quarantine.  Delaware County has had 324 total cases of COVID 19, with 266 recoveries & 9 deaths.

The Sidney Central School District has been notified that 3 members of the District have tested positive for COVID-19. The Department of Health Services is conducting and completing the contact tracing. The Health Department will be contacting people impacted by a potential exposure. There will be no change to the instructional model at this time. The district is working in collaboration with local health departments to make sure all necessary procedures are followed.

The State Department of Labor released preliminary local area unemployment rates for October, the State’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased from 9.7% to 9.6%. Locally, Chenango County had 5% unemployment, Delaware County had 5.2% and Otsego County had 5.6% in October.

State Senator Jen Metzger of the 42nd Senate District, conceded the race to Republican Michael Martucci Tuesday.  There were 30,000 absentee ballots that needed to be counted in that district; the results confirmed Martucci’s Election Day lead in the race.

The Delaware County Board of Supervisors adopted the county budget at their meeting Tuesday, several department heads received pay raises.  The budget has a property tax levy increase of about 1.7%

The Governor said that 146 Law Enforcement agencies have started the process since he signed the Executive Order in June.

Governor Cuomo stated that there were 955 positive COVID tests Wednesday statewide out of almost 93,000 tests, or 1.2% of all tested.  The state now has almost 453,000 positive tests since March, there were 500 people hospitalized, 145 were in an ICU, 72 were on ventilators, there were 2 deaths Wednesday, the state death toll is 25,439.

Delhi Village Police reported a traffic stop on September 15th led to the arrest of 20-year-old Marcelino Romero of Delhi. Romero was charged with Operating a Motor Vehicle While Impaired by Drugs, Unlawful Possession of Marihuana, Failure to Keep Right, and motor vehicle equipment violations.

He was released on traffic summonses returnable to the Delhi Town Court.

State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli released his annual School District in fiscal distress audit for 2019 today.  4 districts statewide were listed in significant fiscal stress, including the Norwich City School District. , Oxford Academy was listed in the 3rd category of “Susceptible to Fiscal Stress”

Governor Cuomo and SUNY Chancellor Jim Malatras announced that the individual saliva swab diagnostic test for COVID-19, developed by SUNY Upstate Medical University and Quadrant Biosciences has been granted emergency use authorization by the FDA.  The saliva test allows for about 10 to 25 people to be screened in one COVID-19 test, using saliva swabs rather than nasal swabs. Individuals administer the tests themselves, swabbing their mouths, and provide the saliva samples, which are currently processed at SUNY Upstate Medical Center’s laboratory.

WCDO NEWS WEDNESDAY 8-19-20 http://www.wcdoonline.com/localnews/wcdo-news-wednesday-8-19-20/ Wed, 19 Aug 2020 19:32:10 +0000 http://www.wcdoonline.com/localnews/?p=7870 Continue reading ]]> The Broome County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an accident involving a dirt bike and a parked van on Airport Road in the Town of Union Tuesday night.  Patrols were dispatched to Airport Road following reports of people riding minibikes and off-road motorcycles, 1 patrol observed a male riding a dirt bike which struck a full-size van that was parked on the side of the roadway a short time later.  Cameron Fortner was ejected off the dirt bike, a deputy found him unconscious and not breathing & she began CPR.  The investigation revealed that John Hughes saw the dirt bike traveling on the street, he entered the roadway with a shovel to force the dirt bike to the side of the roadway, and Fortner swerved & struck the van. Fortner was transported to Wilson Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead, Hughes was charged with 2nd degree Manslaughter, the investigation is continuing.

A Broome County Grand Jury has indicted 45 year-old Larry Harris of Johnson City on 2 charges of predatory sexual assault against a child and 2 counts of rape.  Broome County District Attorney Mike Korchak said that Harris was already being held in the Broome County Jail facing murder and manslaughter charges for the death of 11 year-old Jerome Smith in February of 2019.  The new charges were filed after a victim came forward accusing Harris of sex crimes between 2013 and 2019, Harris will be tried separately on the new charges.

The State Health Department announced that there were 631 new COVID 19 cases diagnosed Tuesday, out of over 80,000 test administered.  The total number of COVID 19 positive tests is 427,202, currently there are 548 people Hospitalized, there were 6 more deaths attributed to the virus yesterday, bringing the state death toll to 25,270 since March.

The Broome County Health Department announced that they had a small number of positive COVID 19 cases diagnosed Tuesday, bringing their total to 1124 since March.  They have had 75 deaths, 980 recoveries and 503 are being monitored by the Department.

The Chenango County Health Department reported that they are still at 218 total cases of COVID 19 since March, with 102 Active Quarantines, 1 Hospitalization, 199 Recoveries, 7 deaths & 20,089 Tests Performed.

Otsego County Health Department reported 2 new COVID 19 positive cases today, bringing their total since March to 115.  There are 3 active cases with no one hospitalized, 106 have recovered, 25 are quarantined due to close contact to ta case, and 196 are quarantined after traveling from a high risk state.  There have been 6 deaths in Otsego County from the virus.

State Police and local law enforcement agencies statewide will be ramping up enforcement of impaired driving today through Labor Day, Monday, September 7th with their annual “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign is designed to reduce alcohol and other drug-related traffic crashes.  Law enforcement will be stepping up patrols, and the NYS Thruway Authority and State Department of Transportation will have Variable Message Signs alerting motorists to the consequences of impaired driving to help deter that behavior. During the 2019 enforcement campaign, law enforcement throughout the state issued 4,995 tickets for impaired driving and 170,378 tickets for other vehicle and traffic law violations.

State Police and a Delaware County deputy were dispatched to a reported burglary in the town of Kortright where the homeowner told troopers a man & woman left the scene & that their residence in the town of Meredith had also been burglarized & a vehicle had been stolen.  The stolen vehicle was found at the Quality Inn of Oneonta, police arrested 34 year old Amber Weaver of Bloomville and 33 year old Christiaan Stewart of Bloomville for Burglary, Grand Larceny & Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, and Weaver was additionally charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance.  Both were arraigned and were remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $30,000 cash bail or $60,000 bond.

Delaware County Public Health received 1 new positive test result for COVID-19 Tuesday and no additional recoveries have been reported. The known active cases in the County as of today is now 3. To date there have been 99 confirmed positive cases of COVID-19, with 20 people now under mandatory quarantine.  The 3 people are isolated and receiving care at home, 6 people have died and 90 have fully recovered.

Hartwick College will welcome students to the campus between this Saturday, August 22 and Sunday, August 30, with Classes beginning August 31.  All students and employees will be required to adhere to numerous protocols.  Coursework will be delivered both in-person and virtually for students in the fall semester. Changes to the academic calendar for the fall semester eliminated breaks until in-person instruction ends on Friday, November 20, and then all students will leave campus by November 21 and then complete the semester’s instruction and exams remotely. WCDO NEWS TUESDAY 8-18-20 http://www.wcdoonline.com/localnews/wcdo-news-tuesday-8-18-20/ Tue, 18 Aug 2020 19:28:27 +0000 http://www.wcdoonline.com/localnews/?p=7868 Continue reading ]]> Delaware County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 2 motorcycle, 1 car accident Saturday night on State Route 206 in the town of Walton.   Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies and Walton Fire Department and Emergency Squads were dispatched to a motorcycle – deer accident on State Highway 206 near the intersection of Davis Road. 64-year-old Bruce Gerken, and his wife, 58-year-old Deborah Gerken of Bainbridge were traveling on a motorcycle when they collided with a deer that ran into the roadway, Bruce Gerken lost control & he and his wife were ejected from the motorcycle, which then struck a vehicle driven by 56-year-old Debra Higley of Trout Creek.  Bruce & Deborah Gerken were taken to Wilson Hospital, Debra Higley & her passenger 62 year-old Luther Higley were uninjured.  Another motorcyclist traveling with the Gerkens, 74-year-old Richard King from Bainbridge lost control of his motorcycle while attempting to avoid the Gerken’s collision; he struck the guide wires, his Motorcycle overturned, fatally injuring King.  The accident remains under investigation

The State Health Department reported 655 additional cases of COVID 19, after testing almost 67,000 people Monday, bringing the statewide total to 426,571 since March.  537 people are hospitalized, 126 are in Intensive Care, with 60 on ventilators, and there were 8 deaths from the virus Monday, bringing the state death toll to 25,264.

Chenango County Public Health reported that they have had 218 total confirmed cases of COVID 19 since March, they have 96 Active Quarantines, 1 Hospitalization, 199 Total Recoveries, 7 deaths they have conducted 19916 tests.

Governor Cuomo announced that 2 additional states have been added to the travel advisory requiring individuals who have traveled to New York from those states to quarantine for 14 days. The newly-added states are Alaska and Delaware. No areas have been removed.  The full list of restricted states can be found at coronavirus.health.ny.gov.

The City of Oneonta has established a dedicated hotline for citizens to report concerns over gatherings that are seen as jeopardizing public health doing this time of COVID-19 pandemic. New York State Law currently prohibits gatherings at which individuals cannot remain a minimum of 6 feet distance from others. Under no circumstances are gatherings of more than 50 persons permitted. State Police arrested 24 year old Alexander Hartman of Binghamton for 2nd degree Burglary and 3rd degree Arson.  On August 9, Troopers and the Nanticoke Fire Department were dispatched to a garage fire, an investigation revealed that Hartman broke into a residence to steal items then started a fire in the garage.  Hartman was arrested and processed at the Binghamton barracks & he was later transported to Broome County Central Arraignment and Processing.

Delaware County received no new positive test result for COVID-19 today or over the weekend and no additional recoveries have been reported. The known active cases in the County as of today remains at 2. To date there have been 98 confirmed positive cases of COVID-19, with 18 people now under mandatory quarantine.  2 people are isolated at home, 6 people have died and 90 have fully recovered.

WCDO NEWS TUESDAY 2-11-20 http://www.wcdoonline.com/localnews/wcdo-news-tuesday-2-11-20/ Tue, 11 Feb 2020 19:46:23 +0000 http://www.wcdoonline.com/localnews/?p=7505 Continue reading ]]> The Broome County Sheriff’s Office responded to an accident in the town of Sanford, where the driver of a tractor-trailer collided with a farm tractor Monday morning.  The deceased has been identified as 32-year-old Cole Wood of Walton.   The preliminary investigation revealed that Wood’s tractor-trailer was carrying steel-I beams and the farm tractor hauling a manure spreader & both were traveling south on State Route 41, the tractor-trailer came upon the farm tractor and swerved into a ditch,  the momentum of the steel-I beams continued to move them forward into the cab of the tractor-trailer, pinning Wood inside.  The operator of the farm tractor was not injured.  The tractor-trailer was owned by Richard Gray Trucking of Bainbridge, The crash remains under investigation.

State Police are reminding the public to move over for emergency vehicles. On Monday, a trooper from the Liberty barracks had a close call on State Route 17 in the town of Rockland. The trooper just stopped a vehicle for violations, when his vehicle was struck from behind as he was preparing to exit, the unidentified trooper sustained non-life threatening injuries.

State Police issued more than 8,300 tickets and arrested 122 people during a special STOP DWI traffic enforcement period over Super Bowl Weekend.  The initiative was funded by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee and was also carried out by local law enforcement agencies across the state.  Troop C had 500 tickets, 175 of them for speeding.

The State Department of Health announced an update on the testing for the Corona Virus.  Samples from 23 New Yorkers have been sent to the CDC, 22 have come back negative, and 1 was still pending. There are still no confirmed cases of novel coronavirus in New York State.

The State Medicaid Redesign Team II will convene its first meeting of all members today at the Albany Capital Center. Central New York and the North Country regions had the largest percentages of districts in a fiscal stress category.

Governor Cuomo today announced legislation in the Executive Budget to make New York’s fracking ban permanent. The measure would restrict the Department of Environmental Conservation from approving permits that would authorize an applicant to drill, deepen, plug back or convert wells that use high-volume hydraulic fracturing as a means to complete or recomplete a well.

State Senator Fred Akshar released his latest Community Voice Survey on the controversial new bail reform law that went into effect at the beginning of the year.  The poll found 49% of respondents said the changes were bad for New York while 37% said they were good for the Empire State.  Akshar supports a full repeal, he has also introduced legislation to fix key parts of the bail reform law, including a bill to restore bail for several violent crimes & he also introduced legislation to remove the option of cashless bail if the arrested individual has been convicted of a felony in the past 10 years.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 25-year-old Alizabeth Ramos of Brooklyn Friday evening, on a charge of Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle, following a traffic stop on in the Town of Masonville. Ramos was also issued tickets for Unlicensed Operator, and Speeding, she was released on an appearance ticket and is scheduled to return to the Town of Masonville Court at a later date.

Governor Cuomo signed legislation Friday to stop Pension Poaching, which occurs when financial planners, insurance agents or others claim they are assisting veterans and their families get federal benefits, but are really convincing veterans to reposition their assets to qualify for benefits they are ineligible for, the poachers then sell the veterans unneeded financial products or services.  The bill will take effect in four months.

Oneonta Police responded Saturday to a residence on Chestnut Street, for a report of a deceased person.   Officers discovered 20 year old Nicolas Stagnitta from Patchogue, Long Island, who was a student at the State University at Oneonta, the initial investigation and autopsy revealed that Stagnitta took his own life; however, the investigation is continuing pending results of toxicology testing.

The Hancock Fire Department and EMT’s were dispatched Saturday to Jensen’s Ledges for a report of a 10 year old boy who had fallen off the ledges.  The Hancock Fire Department  rope rescue team performed a high angle rope rescue to extricate the boy within 1 hour and he was transported down the mountain in a UTV & was transported by LifeNet to a pediatric trauma center with life threatening injuries.

The Dormitory Authority has issued approximately $482 million in low-cost, tax-exempt bonds on behalf of 54 school districts across the state as part the School Districts Revenue Bond Financing Program, for fire protection, security, and air quality systems upgrades; renovations, Athletic field improvements; and technology updates.  Locally, the Norwich City School District receives $7,430,000, Sidney Central School District gets $9,820,000 & Unadilla Valley Central School District gets $6,890,000.

Otsego County Sheriff’s Department arrested 20 year old Christopher Robinson of the Town of Maryland, following allegations of an adult having sexual encounters with a juvenile. Robinson was charged with 2nd degree Rape & Criminal Sexual Act, for allegedly performing sexual acts with a female who was 14 & 15 years old at the time of the incidents in question. Robinson was arraigned in the Town of Worcester Court & is being held on $5,000 dollars cash bail or $10,000 bond at the Otsego County Jail.

Animal Adventure Park in Harpursville and the Wildlife Conservation Center of Virginia announced that Tajiri, the calf of April born before the whole world last year, will be transported to the Carolina Wildlife Conservation Park outside of Raleigh, North Carolina. Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 55 year old Douglas Jones of Hamden, Friday for Endangering the Welfare of a Child. The arrest occurred following an investigation regarding a Facebook messenger conversation between Jones and a child under the age of 17, where Jones is accused of acting in a manner likely to be injurious to the child’s mental and moral well-being. Jones was arraigned & was released upon his own recognizance, and scheduled to appear before the Town of Davenport Court at a later date.

Schumer released a letter to FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb saying the agency had the legal authority to regulate e-cigarette flavors, Schumer praised steps the FDA has taken, including issuing warning letters last week to 13 manufacturers, distributors and sellers over marketing that has e-cigarette products looking like juice boxes and candies, but wants to see more.

About 10,000 NYSEG customers were without power Sunday evening following a storm system that passed through the upstate Counties over the weekend. About 85 were without power in Broome & Chenango Counties from that system as of Sunday night.

None of the local schools were listed in significant stress, however 3 of the 7 are in “moderate fiscal stress” are local, they included the Norwich City School District, Harpursville central School & Schenevus central school. 17 schools were listed as “susceptible to fiscal stress”, which included Unatego & Oxford Academy. The highest percentages of stressed school districts were in Central New York with 8.3% and the Southern Tier 8.1%.

Voters in the Unatego School District voted in favor of 46 to 12 Wednesday. Voters approved of the district’s plan to lease 3 large school busses and 1 small passenger bus.

Firefighters in Downsville responded to a fire in a garage that exploded due to the storage of fireworks. Fire investigators believe that the fire started with the lighting of a torch, which spread to the nearby garage. The building was a total loss; fire fighters from Walton, & East Branch assisted Downsville firefighters.

State Senator Fred Akshar released his latest Community Voice Survey online and by mail to poll the community on various issues facing constituents. The Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force executed a search warrant at 74 Park Avenue on Wednesday. Investigators seized crack cocaine, heroin, 40 envelopes of heroin packaged for sale, suboxone strips and $917 in suspected drug sales. Police charged 46-year-old Floyd Crockett of Binghamton with multiple counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance, Crockett is being held at the City of Binghamton Police Department awaiting arraignment.

On Friday Norwich Police Department concluded an investigation into the sale of cocaine in the City of Norwich; they arrested 29 year old Heather Pollock, of Norwich for criminal sale of a controlled substance in the third degree. Pollock faces court action shortly.

State Police arrested 46 year old Joseph Fassett of Binghamton, for felony Aggravated Unlicensed Operation and several other traffic violations. Troopers observed Fassett speeding, and failing to dim his headlights, a computer check showed that he was suspended 16 times in New York on 10 different dates. Fassett was arraigned and was remanded to the Broome County Jail with no bail set. His next court date in the town of Maine is on February 28th…

School Board seats in the Bainbridge Guilford district were Tina Ammon, Keith Hanvey & Rebecca Sullivan, in the Norwich district, Jennifer Collins, Robert Smith & Joseph Stagliano in Franklin Jamie Archibald was elected to the school Board.

The Chenango county sheriff’s office arrested 24-year-old Brooke Snyder of Afton on a charge of 2nd degree burglary. Snyder & co-defendants are accused of unlawfully entering a Village of Afton residence and stealing an unspecified item, she was arraigned in the Town of Afton Court and was remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $5,000 cash; she will reappear in the Town of Afton Court at a later date.

State Police at Troop C in Sidney are investigating an accident on Interstate 88 between Sidney and in Unadilla at about 6:30 this morning. The highway is open in both directions; more details are expected to be released shortly.

The Chenango county sheriffs department arrested 18-year-old James Shurock of Sherburne on 11 counts of Petty Larceny. Shurock is accused of stealing 109 library books from the Sherburne-Earlville High School Library, he was released on an appearance ticket to the Village of Sherburne Court at a later date.

The Oneonta department of public Service announced that they plan to co0nnect the new Burnside Avenue water main to the existing water main On River street. The work will begin at 10:00 PM tonight, and crews will be working throughout the night. River Street will be closed to traffic between Wilcox & Mitchell; side streets may be used as detours. Officials said that about 40 customers would be without water, the trench across the street would be filled in & repaved tomorrow morning. Those with questions can call 432-6465.

The State Senate passed legislation that would make the state’s property tax cap permanent. The legislation passed 4 years ago by Governor Cuomo & the legislature made the tax cap as only a temporary measure to cuts costs when the state was facing billions of dollars in deficits when Cuomo took office.

State Police from Deposit arrested 53-year-old William Barnhart of Deposit, for Driving While Intoxicated with a reportable BAC result of .17%. The arrest resulted from Delaware County 911 report of a disabled vehicle at the State Route 17, Exit 84 off ramp in Deposit. Troopers accuse Barnhart of drifting off the exit ramp and getting his vehicle stuck in a snow bank. Barnhart was issued tickets returnable to the Town of Deposit Court on February 23rd.

The Sidney village police arrested 44-year-old Ralph Fuller of Walton for predatory sexual assault, 1st degree burglary, & criminal possession of a weapon, Fuller is accused of breaking into a Sidney residents home, using a taser and raping the victim, he is being held in the Delaware County Jail without bail pending future court action.

State and local law enforcement will hit the roads looking for people who are not wearing seat belts, as part of the “Click It or Ticket” Campaign through the end of May. In New York State, drivers and passengers can be fined if they are caught without their seat belt. Drivers can even receive points on their license. 21% of highway deaths in the State happen to occupants who were not buckled up.

The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum hosts the 6th Hall of Fame Classic Weekend this coming weekend.  The Classic will be played Saturday, and will feature representatives from all 30 Major League Baseball teams. Hall of Famers Roberto Alomar, Andre Dawson, Rollie Fingers, Eddie Murray, Phil Niekro and Ozzie Smith will serve as managers and coaches for the Memorial Day Weekend legends game.  The festivities will start with a parade down main street in Cooperstown at noon, to Doubleday Field where the Home Run Derby starts at 1:00 and the game will start at 2:05 PM. Former Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno was acquitted on all charges relating to alleged political corruption on Friday.  The jury in this 2nd trial deliberated for about 4 hours, Bruno was convicted of the fraud charges in 2009 in a trial at which jurors acquitted him of five other fraud counts and could not decide on a sixth count.  Bruno plans to ask state taxpayers to reimburse his legal expenses which cost into the millions.

The Northeast Classic Car Museum and NBT Bank announced interior improvements at the Museum, which are being underwritten by NBT Bank.  The donation will enable the Museum to upgrade and enhance its banquet facility, revamp a catering preparation area, enclose a storage area, install a sliding door room divider, purchase matching chairs and tables to complete seating for 250 people, and purchase a new 14′ X 10′ projection screen. The new NBT Bank Event Center will provide a multifunction area for future large events.

Howie Hawkins of Syracuse won the Green Party nomination for governor of New York again. Hawkins won the nomination on Saturday in Troy. In 2010, Hawkins received 59,906 votes, more than any other 3rd party candidate who ran against Democrat Andrew Cuomo.  The centerpiece of the Green Party is a proposal to build a 100 percent clean energy by 2030, which they claim could create 4.5 million new jobs over the next 15 years.
