The 19th Annual Norwich Pumpkin Festival gets underway today & Saturday in Norwich. The pumpkin weigh in contest is being held this afternoon until 7:00 tonight; there will be a variety of tournaments, entertainment by musicians, magicians, dance groups and more with Saturday’s event ending with fireworks.

The National Drug Take-Back Day will be tomorrow from 10:00 AM to 1:30 PM. Residents can dispose of old and unused medicines, in their original containers at various locations, including the Sidney Police Department, Norwich City Police Department, Oneonta City Police, The Bainbridge Town Hall, and at the Otsego, Chenango & Broome County Sheriff’s Departments.

The Sidney Town Board & Supervisor Gene Pigford announced that they would hold a ribbon cutting & public tours of the town’s new Municipal Building at 44 Grand Street, this Friday from 4:00 to 6:00 PM. The building formerly housed the offices of the Mirabito Fuel Group & Mang Insurance.

The Chenango Arts Council and Friends of Rogers are teaming up for “Bat Appreciation!” during the 19th annual Pumpkin Fest in Norwich. Beginning at 6:00 tonight, the interactive presentation will take place in the Mariea Brown and Raymond Loft Galleries, where it will be on display through November 3rd. The interactive presentation is offered free of charge, donations are welcome to support future programs by the Chenango Arts Council.

Delaware County Board of Elections reminds voters that absentee ballot applications can be picked up at their office in Delhi, or downloaded from their website. The Board of Elections will also be opened on this Saturday & Saturday November 4th from 9:00 AM to 12:00 Noon for absentee voting. Governor Cuomo today announced that 39 businesses have joined START-UP NY and will expand in or locate to New York State through the tax-free program associated with colleges and universities across the state. The 39 have committed to create 817 new jobs and invest more than $30 million over the next 5 years. Locally at Binghamton University, 140 new jobs will be created through i3 Assemblies; a new manufacturing company that offers that produces electronic components medical diagnostic/imaging devices, cutting-edge space exploration and satellite technology; The Company will invest $8.2 million.

The Broome County District Attorney’s Office arrested 54 year old Ned Woodruff of Windsor for making a terroristic threat, for allegedly threatening a Broome County Judge Joseph Cawley. Woodruff is accused of threatening to kill Judge Cawley, unless the Judge ruled favorably in a criminal matter, as Woodruff was charged with harassment last year after his home was burglarized and $280,000 was reportedly stolen from his home. Woodruff was arraigned in Binghamton City Court and was remanded to the Broome County Jail without bail.

Magic City Music Hall announced today that Saturday evening’s concert with Rusted Root would be the venue’s final show. Over the past year the Music Hall has produced more than 2 dozen major concerts, including by REO Speedwagon, Kansas, and Third Eye Blind, among others. Ticket refunds for shows with Chase Rice and Josh Turner remain available at the place of purchase, including the Magic City Music Hall Box Office, as are refunds for any other previously postponed or cancelled concerts. The Music Hall Box Office will be open for refunds through 6:00 PM on Monday, after that, refunds may be obtained by sending a stamped, self-addressed envelope to Magic City, P.O. Box 462, Endicott.

The State Department of Labor released preliminary local unemployment rates for August, the State’s unemployment rate increased over the month, from 4.7% to 4.8% in August, locally, Chenango County had an unemployment rate at 4.4%, Delaware County was at 4.9% & Otsego county was at 4.3%.
