Jerell Thompson of Binghamton, pleaded guilty in Broome County Court to Attempted Criminal Possession of a Weapon. On December 23, 2023, Thompson was found to be in possession of a loaded Handgun after a traffic stop by State Police. Thompson will be sentenced to 5 years in New York State Prison and 5 years post-release supervision. Sentencing is scheduled for April 24, 2024, in Broome County Court.

41 year old Amy Kille of Walton appeared in Delaware County Court Monday & pleaded guilty to 1 count of Driving While Intoxicated & 1 count of Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle. On August 30, 2023 Kille was pulled over after driving erratically in the Village of Walton, her license had been revoked for a prior DWI, her BAC was .25%, more than 3 times the legal limit, sentencing will be on March 25, Kille will be sentenced to a 5-year term of probation supervision, she will be required to successfully complete the Delaware County Adult Treatment Court Program, her license will be revoked, and she will be required to install an ignition interlock device in any vehicle she owns or operates.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Office announced that 34 year-old Krystynne Bliss of Sidney is facing a charge of Promoting Prison Contraband, On January 19th, members of the Delaware County Sheriffs Office Criminal Investigation Division received information that Bliss entered the Correctional Facility while in possession of with Schedule 3 controlled substance, Bliss was arraigned at the Delaware County Central Arraignment court and returned to the corrections facility on an earlier unrelated charge.

State Police at Troop C responded Monday Afternoon to assist the Cortland County Sheriff’s Department at a residence on Homer Avenue in the City of Cortland. Gunfire was exchanged inside the residence. A person inside the residence sustained injuries and was transported to Upstate Medical Center. No officers were injured during the incident. The investigation is ongoing, there is no danger to the public.

The Binghamton Rumble Ponies announced that Reid Brignac returns as manager, along with Pitching Coach AJ Sager, Hitting Coach Darin Everson, and Bench Coach Mariano Duncan. Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded last Thursday to a domestic incident in progress in the Town of Meredith. Upon arrival one of the individuals involved was identified as 32- year-old Edward Reed of Meredith, a tinfoil containing a white powdery substance along with a scale was discovered within the residence, Deputies charged Reed with criminal possession of a controlled substance and criminal use of drug paraphernalia, . Reed was released on appearance tickets returnable at a later date to the Meredith Town Court.

Broome County District Attorney Paul Battisti announces the guilty plea of Rajee Al-Mashni for a fatal hit and run that occurred in 2023 in Johnson City. Al-Mashni pleaded guilty to Manslaughter and Driving While Ability Impaired by Combined Influence of Drugs and Alcohol and Attempted Assault, in Broome County Court, for fatally striking Elizabeth Atkinson with a vehicle at the Oakdale Commons on March 5th, 2023. Al-Mashni also entered a guilty plea to Attempted Assault, for a June 2022 motor vehicle accident in Binghamton which left several people seriously injured. Al-Mashni will be sentenced to 5 to 15 years in State prison when he is sentenced April 9th.

Binghamton Fire Fighters responded to a blaze at 2 Pleasant Street, where 1 person escaped & another died in the fire. Fire Fighters believed that the building was vacant, but 1 occupant was taken to an area hospital for smoke inhalation & the other was dead at the scene. The investigation into the cause of the blaze is continuing.

Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar released details on a pregnant inmate who attempted to smuggle drugs into the Broome County Correctional Facility and overdosed after entering the facility, leading to the death of her unborn child. Akshar said that his staff worked to saved the life of 36 year old Quashaia Oranchak of Owego on March 20th, after she was arrested by State Police on felony drug charges, she began showing signs of a drug overdose shortly after arriving, Narcan was administered & EMT’s were called to transport her to Wilson Hospital, where she had a baggie of a substance located in her body, which tested positive for both methamphetamine and fentanyl. Toxicology reports from the Coroner show that both the unborn fetus’s blood and cerebral spinal fluid contained an extremely high & fatal level of methamphetamine. Oranchak was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance & Promoting Prison Contraband. The Sheriff’s Office report can be found at gobroomecounty.com.

Norwich City Police arrested 27 year old Mark Andrews of North Pitcher Friday on a variety of charges after he failed to comply with Police & led them on a chase. Andrews was taken into custody & was charged 20 charges including aggravated unlicensed operation, Driving while under the influence of drugs, reckless driving, and resisting arrest. A Norwich Officer attempted to stop a Pick up truck with switched plates, with the pursuit ending at Hortsman’s Trailer Park in the Town of Norwich, Andrews barricaded himself in the vehicle until he was taken into custody, Andrews was also wanted on 2 warrants, & was allegedly operating the pickup while under the influence of Methamphetamines, & that Andrews’ license had been suspended 33 times. Andrews was arraigned was released.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested 45 year old David Moxley of Hamden following a motor vehicle accident on April 14th. Deputies responded to a 1 car motor vehicle roll over with entrapment on County Highway 14, in the Town of Meredith, the vehicle went off the road into the ditch, and had rolled onto the roof. Moxley was charged with DWI and aggravated driving with a BAC greater than 0.18%, he was released on appearance tickets returnable to the Town of Meredith Court at a later date.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested 2 juveniles for 3rd degree Assault, following an incident at the Charlotte Valley Central School on April 12th. The Preliminary investigation by Deputies revealed that a physical altercation had occurred where the victim was physically injured, both juveniles were charged, and were issued a juvenile appearance ticket and were directed to report to the Delaware County Probation Department at a later date.

The City of Norwich is waiting for a few final steps before they can start on Their Water Main replacement projects down town, City of Norwich Community Development Director Erik Scrivener explains:

Scrivener said that they have lined up a USDA loan, that would be used to pay for the project, which would then be paid back with the grant money when it finally arrives. The project area includes a new water mains under South Broad Street, and East Main Street.

Rajee Almashni of Binghamton pleaded Not Guilty in Broome County Court Friday to 17 counts, including Murder & DWI, for the March 5th Hit & Run that led to the death of 72-year-old Elizabeth Atkinson, as she exited the Oakdale Commons in Johnson City. Police were called to the commons & attempted to make contact with Almashni, but he fled in a vehicle at a high rate of speed through the parking lot & hit Atkinson, who was taken to Wilson Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. Almashni is being held in the Broome County Jail pending additional court action.

Johnson City Police were called Sunday afternoon to the Oakdale Commons to check the welfare of a male subject who was believed to be intoxicated and was attempting to break into vehicles. 20-year-old Rajee Almashni of Binghamton is accused of trying to flee a police officer in a vehicle at a high rate of speed, striking 72 year old Elizabeth Atkinson of Johnson City. Additional officers responded & Almashni’s vehicle became disabled and he fled on foot, he was located and was taken into custody. Atkinson was taken to Wilson Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. Almashni was charged with DWI, 2nd degree murder, Vehicular manslaughter, Leaving the scene of a fatal motor vehicle accident, Unlawful fleeing, Reckless endangerment & Grand Larceny, Almashni is being held at Broome County central arraignment awaiting processing

A Chenango County Grand Jury indicted 50-year-old Andrew Frank Jr. on several charges for a series of commercial break-ins in downtown Sherburne in November & December of last year. Frank and 49-year-old Rena Jones were arrested by the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office on December 7, Frank was indicted on 3 counts of 3rd degree burglary, 3 counts of criminal mischief, & 1 count of attempt burglary, and 3 counts of petty larceny. Jones has been indicted with for 3rd degree burglary, for her role in 1 of the burglaries. Frank was arraigned in court and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility with no bail. Rena was released on an appearance ticket for Village of Sherburne Court.

This coming Sunday, March 12th it will be Daylight Saving Time, & New Yorkers will set their clocks forward one hour. The Firefighters Association of the State of New York is urging everyone to check their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors at that time. Homeowners with alarms that have sealed, non-removable batteries should test the alarms to see if they are functional and check their expiration dates. Alarms equipped with removable batteries should have their batteries replaced and then test the alarm. New York State currently leads the nation in home fire deaths, with 36 deaths in the first two months of 2023, more information is available at fasny.com and nfpa.org.

The Broome County District Attorney’s Office announced that Benjamin Forestier pleaded guilty to felony Aggravated Family Offense, for violating an Order of Protection which prohibited him from having contact with a 32-year-old woman. Forestier ignored the order and sent several harassing text messages to her, he had previously been convicted of Criminal Mischief for damaging the property of the same victim in 2021 & he has a prior felony conviction for Criminal Possession of a Weapon from 2019. Forestier will spend 1.5 to 3 years in state prison, when sentenced at a later date.

Broome County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a motor vehicle accident on Ouaquaga Road in the Town of Colesville Thursday. 35-year-old Tina Harb of Harpursville lost control of her car and collided with a car that was parked off the roadway, her 9-year-old daughter was in the car during the accident and sustained minor injuries & she was taken to Wilson Hospital. Harb displayed several signs of impairment, she had alcoholic beverages in her vehicle and her purse, plus she refused a field sobriety test and was charged with felony DWI, Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated With a Child, Endangering the Welfare of a Child plus other charges, she was released on an appearance ticket and will return to the Town of Colesville Court at a later date.
