Narcotics Detectives located Collins cooking methamphetamine using the “one pot” method; Collins was charged with Unlawful Manufacturing Methamphetamine, Unlawful Disposal of Methamphetamine Laboratory Material, as well as several other drug charges, he was arraigned and remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $5,000 cash bail.

Governor Cuomo announced that New York State is expanding its efforts to prevent colorectal cancer, the state’s second leading cause of cancer death. Over five years, $8 million in federal grants will go toward new screening initiatives that will be administered by the New York State Department of Health. Each year, nearly 10,000 New Yorkers develop colorectal cancer and more than 3,000 die as a result.

Governor Cuomo signed legislation that will require tattoo and body piercing studios in New York State to use single-use needles and single-use ink for all procedures performed within their establishments. Single-use ink and single-use needles come in sealed, sterile packages and are intended for only one use. This bill would take effect 120 days after becoming law.

The Otsego County Chamber of Commerce will hold their next Business After Hours Event today from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm for the United Way of Delaware and Otsego Counties at Roots Brewing Company at 175 Main Street in Oneonta. Non-perishable food items and Hygiene Items are requested for the United Way Food and Hygiene Items collection through September 14th, as part of their 2015 campaign.

State Police arrested 39-year-old James Peart of Chenango Forks for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, following a traffic stop for speeding near the on ramp for State Route 17 in the Town of Dickinson. Peart was observed throwing a small metal object while stopping his motorcycle, Troopers located the object and found that it contained 4.4 grams of illegal methamphetamine. Peart was issued a ticket returnable to the Town of Dickinson on September 1st.

Sidney Village Superintendent of Public Works Mike Mercurio announced today that the traffic light at the intersection of Main & River Streets in Downtown Sidney is now in operation. Mercurio reminds motorists that the 4-way stop system implemented since March is no longer in effect & motorists need to obey the newly installed signals.

Deputies observed & stopped a vehicle for following another vehicle too closely, they determined that 23-year-old Mark O’Neill of Walton was impaired by drugs; he was arrested and transported to the Village of Sidney Police Department where Deputies were assisted by a Sidney Police Department Drug Recognition Expert. O’Neill was charged with DWI, Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs and Following Too Closely. He was issued tickets directing him to appear in the Town of Franklin Court on June 25th.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a 911 report of a property damage accident Friday on State Highway 206 in the Town of Walton. Deputies learned that the operator of 1 vehicle, 51-year-old Edward Wheeler of Downsville was intoxicated. Wheeler was charged with DWI, Aggravated DWI and Driving Left of Pavement Markings. Wheeler is accused of having a BAC of higher than .18%; he was issued tickets for Town of Walton Court on July 22nd.

Starting Thursday, the State DOT will begin a several week project to replace a culvert on North Main Street in the Village of New Berlin. Work will be done daily between 6 am and 6 pm with full-time lane closure between Academy Street and West/Genesee Streets. Traffic will be maintained with an extension of the existing signals and one-way alternating traffic. The project is scheduled to last through July 31st.

All current students and re-entering students will be able to continue their programs at the Utica Campus with transportation provided by the college through Oneonta Bus Lines. The college will continue to maintain the Elm Street Oneonta facilities for student support functions, with the Learning Center -Library relocating there, and computers will be available for student use, 3 days per week. The USC Board of trustees sited a decline in enrollment and recent parking changes in Oneonta for the changes.

Congressman Chris Gibson announced the federal spending bill approved by the House last week includes $344 million to ensure the Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs are developing electronic health records to transfer veteran’s medical information. The legislation also includes language to require the VA to create a system to prevent unnecessary mistakes or delays in veterans’ medical care. If goals are not met, a portion of the funding will not be released. The VA reform bill signed into law earlier this year requires the VA to permit veterans to be seen by non-VA healthcare providers if they reside more than 40 miles from the nearest VA medical facility or are unable to secure an appointment at a VA facility within 30 days.

The Delaware County Broadband Initiative was awarded $2.9 million in matching New York State grant funding by the Southern Tier Economic Development Council following Governor Cuomo’s annual Regional Council Awards Ceremony on Thursday. The DCBI project will extend broadband services to the un-served residents and businesses, with over 210 miles of fiber optic facilities passing 1800 un-served and underserved households, businesses, and institutions in several towns in Delaware County. Manufacturing activity in New York State contracted for the first time in nearly 2 years. The New York Feds Empire state general business conditions index fell to –3.58 in December, falling to negative territory for the first time since January 2013. The new orders index tumbled –1.97 to 9.14 in November, the pace of growth in employment fell slightly with the index of the number of employees falling t 8.33 from 8.51. The survey of manufacturing plants in the state is 1 of the earliest monthly guideposts to U.S. factory conditions.

There has been a dramatic decline in the number of deaths in New York caused by AIDS. The state Health department recorded the number of AIDS related deaths were down by ¾’s from 1997 to 2012, when the number had dropped to 749. The decline is attributed to greater awareness on how the disease is spread and also powerful drug treatments for those diagnosed with the illness.
