State Police were dispatched Christmas day at about 12:30 PM to assist the Oneonta City Fire Department with a fully engulfed single wide trailer at the Oneida Village Mobile Home Park on Oneida Street. Fire personnel located a deceased male in the residence. State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation responded to the scene, the deceased man has been identified as 50 year old Aaron Blakeslee, who resided in the trailer. Oneonta Fire Department reported that 1 dog and 2 cats also died in the fire, there were no injuries to any firefighters. Investigators are working with the City of Oneonta Fire Department and State Fire Investigators to determine the cause of the fatal fire.

The State Department of Public Service announced it has expanded its investigation into NYSEG and sister company Rochester Gas & Electric, for potential mismanagement of their utilities’ billing systems and protocols. The Department’s Consumer Advocate will host a series of public forums in affected areas starting in January to hear consumer concerns first-hand, after over 4700 customers complained of sudden spikes in their electric bills of about 60% on average earlier this year. Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested a Hamden man on charges stemming from a Menacing Complaint Tuesday. Deputies responded to a reported menacing complaint, Upon arrival Deputies interviewed 49-year-old Hayes Hathaway, deputies determined that Hathaway had pushed the victim from behind, displayed an axe while verbally threatening to cause harm to the victim and then terminated the victim’s electrical supply. Deputies charged Hathaway with 1 count of each of Menacing & Harassment, & was released & ordered to appear in Town of Hamden Court at a later date.

Governor Kathy Hochul signed a legislative package to crack down on pandemic fraud. The Legislation increases the award amounts given to individuals who report fraud related to a State of Emergency. Currently, private citizens can file civil lawsuits on behalf of the government to help recover defrauded money and may be rewarded a percentage of the money recovered. With this new law, whistleblowers may be eligible to receive additional money if the fraud was perpetrated during a state of emergency.

The State Department of Health urges New Yorkers ages 6 months and older to get a flu shot, with the Department’s latest report showing an additional pediatric death, bringing the total to 5 so far this season. The Department’s new flu surveillance report shows a total of 217,094 positive influenza cases across all 62 counties in New York have been reported to date. Outside of New York City, week-over-week lab-confirmed flu cases are up 4 percent to 36,047, the report is available at nyshc.health.ny.gov.

Cortland County Sheriff’s Officers responded to the Town of Homer for a motor vehicle accident, the driver, 20 year old Lucas Walley of Walton is accused of being intoxicated & driving off of the road. Walley was charged with Driving with .08 of 1% or More of Alcohol, Driving While Intoxicated, Driving Across Hazard Markings, he was processed and released on his own recognizance with appearance tickets returnable to the Town of Homer Court.

Firefighters from area department responded Sunday night to a fire at a house an garage on Riverstone Road near Otsego County route 58 in the town of Oneonta. Otsego County Fire officials reported that Oneonta Firefighters received Mutual Aid from Milford, Pindars Corners, West Oneonta, Laurens, Otego & Schenevus departments; both structures were destroyed, the cause of the fire is under investigation.

The Colonial Bar and restaurant, Dos Rios & The Stone Fox all re-opened Friday, after being closed following accusations of sexual misconduct against a member or Members of the ownership group of the 3 establishments. The Internal Revenue Service announced today that the IRS kick off to the tax season begins on January 24th this year. The deadline for filing federal income tax this year will be April 18th, instead of the usual April 15th.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced new guidance recommending booster doses for all New Yorkers ages 12 and older. The guidance, following action by the CDC, recommends that people, including the newly authorized 12-15 year-old age group, who received the Pfizer vaccine should receive a booster dose at least 5 months after their 2nd dose; the previous recommended interval was 6 months. Moderately to severely immunocompromised 5-11-year-olds can receive an additional primary dose of the Pfizer vaccine 28 days after their 2nd dose. The CDC recommended the same change to a 5 month booster interval for the Moderna vaccine, which is only authorized for people 18 years and older.

The State Department of Health supports “Test to Stay” as a strategy that allows asymptomatic unvaccinated school-based close contacts, such as students, teachers or staff, to avoid school exclusion by testing negative through serial testing using rapid or antigen tests. Delaware County Public Health is allowing school districts to implement Test to Stay; It is the decision of each individual school district to implement the program, as early as today. Sidney Central School District will begin the Test To Stay Program today.

State Police arrested 36 year old William Sabines of Preston after he was indicted by a Chenango County Grand Jury Thursday. Sabines was charged with 2nd degree Murder, Concealment of a Human Corpse and Tampering with Physical Evidence. Sabines was arrested following an investigation into the disappearance of Jesse Donlin, formerly of Sidney, Unadilla and Afton locally. Donlin was reported missing in September of 2019 after failing to appear for a court appearance in Utica, the investigation ultimately led to Sabines arrest. Sabines was remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $250,000 cash bail or $500,000 bond pending future court action.

Chenango County Sheriff’s Office received a missing person complaint regarding 32 year old Amanda Lanfair, who was last seen on November 26th, and stated that she was going to Long Island and was to return on November 28th. Former New York City Health Commissioner Dr. Mary Bassett became the State Health Commissioner on Wednesday, replacing Dr. Howard Zucker, who had been the state Health Commissioner since 2015. Bassett takes over as the state’s COVID-19 hospitalizations are increasing across the state. Bassett was credited, along with Dr. Zucker & Dr. Anthony Fauci of the CDC with stopping a potentially deadly Ebola Outbreak after 1 case was found and contained in New York City in 2013.

A Chenango County jury found Jeremy Coates of Norwich guilty of the murder of David Green in Oxford in 2016. Coates and his girlfriend Melissa Crispell robbed Green, Coates beating him 20 times with various weapons, Crispell pleaded guilty to robbery last May, in a plea deal in exchange for her testimony against Coates, Sentencing for Coates is scheduled for June 1st.

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman today announced the indictment of 12 members of a criminal theft and fencing ring in New York and 27 other states. State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli announced that Securities industry profitability rose by 21%, while the average bonus paid to employees in New York City’s securities industry increased by 1% to $138,210. Pretax profits for the broker/dealer operations of New York Stock Exchange member firms, totaled $17.3 billion in 2016, the highest level in four years. The industry added 2,800 jobs in 2014 and 4,500 jobs in 2015.

1 person was killed & 8 people escaped from the Skylark Motel Fire in Vestal Tuesday Morning. Officials said that fire fighters were slowed down getting to the scene by the winter storm; the name of the deceased has not yet been released. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

17 year old Kyle Jaramillo of Oneonta was arrested by City police after they allegedly found drugs and stolen goods in his apartment. Jaramillo was charged with 2nd degree burglary. Grand larceny, criminal mischief, criminal possession of a controlled substance & endangering the welfare of a Minor, Police seized heroin, televisions, stereo speakers, an air rifle and sneakers that were reported stolen recently for an Oneonta residence. Female lawmakers in New York say early voting would make it easier for all New Yorkers – and particularly women – to cast a ballot. Several legislators on Monday urged Governor Cuomo and legislative leaders to include early voting and automatic voter registration in the state budget expected to be approved by April 1. Governor Cuomo directed State Police to ramp up enforcement efforts as part of a national crackdown on impaired driving through Labor Day weekend, one of the deadliest times of year for drunk and drugged driving fatalities. The Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign began today and ends September 5, will be carried out with assistance from local law enforcement agencies and aims to reduce deaths and injuries caused by motorists driving drunk or impaired by drugs. 1/3rd of all traffic crash fatalities in the United States involve drunk drivers. In New York State, alcohol involvement was listed as a contributing factor in more than 7,000 police-reported crashes in 2015, while illegal drugs contributed to more than 800 crashes.

Governor Cuomo today announced the availability of $98.7 million in funding to support bicycle, pedestrian, multi-use path and transportation-related programs as well as projects that reduce congestion and help to meet the requirements of the Clean Air Act. These projects will be selected through a competitive solicitation process and rated based on established criteria that include public benefit, air quality improvement, and innovation. In July, New York State’s private sector job count increased by 36,200, or 0.5%, to 7.95 million a new state high, according to the state Labor Department. Governor Cuomo announced that $3 million is available to help New Yorkers who have medical conditions that can be aggravated by extreme heat, to buy and install air conditioning. Eligible households can apply for cooling assistance through the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance’s Home Energy Assistance Program beginning May 2. Last year about 240 Southern Tier families received help; overall more than 4,100 households received cooling assistance last summer

The New York State Court of Appeals ruled today that DNA evidence presented by prosecutors in a trial, must be accompanied at trial by at least one analyst involved in the critical stages of the processing of the DNA Evidence used, or who independently analyzed the raw data. The Court of Appeals ruled 4-3, that DNA evidence otherwise violates a defendant’s constitutional right to confront an accuser. The ruling follows a controversial Brooklyn trial where DNA evidence was presented & eventually convicted a man, who will now get a new trial.


Delaware County Sheriff Deputies responded to a report of a Domestic Dispute Monday on Town Shed Road in the Town of Deposit. Deputies arrested 36-year-old Brian Curtis of Deposit for 3rd degree Assault, Criminal Mischief & 3rd degree Robbery, he was arranged in Town of Deposit Court & he was released on $500 cash bail and is to reappear in the Town of Deposit Court at a later date.

State police responded to 2106 Richmond Road in the Town of Union, where they uncovered a methamphetamine-manufacturing lab. Police arrested 34 year old Andrew Honnick of Endicott, with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance & Unlawful Manufacture of Methamphetamine & 47 year old Martine Ritz of Endicott, for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, & Unlawful Manufacture of Methamphetamine. Police also charged 47-year-old Robert White of Endicott with Unlawful Possessions of Marihuana. Honnick and Ritz were arraigned and remanded to the Broome County Jail with out bail. White was arraigned and sent to the Broome County Jail in lieu of $250.00 cash bail.

Governor Cuomo signed legislation to strengthen financial support for the families of terrorist attack victims. The new bill will allow insurers to waive commission fees associated with the purchase of annuity insurance for families affected by any terrorist attack on the United States, expanding on the current law which only allows a waiver for families affected by the September 11, 2001 attacks. Insurers will now be able to offer their services pro-bono and provide further financial relief to families.

Wall Street’s profits were strong in the first half of 2015 at $11.3 billion, and may have positioned New York City’s securities industry for a good year despite recent economic developments, according to a report by State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. Despite new regulations and the high cost of legal settlements related to the 2008 financial crisis, securities industry profits were strong in 2013 and 2014, averaging $16.3 billion annually they were even stronger during the first half of this year by 29% over last year.

Last month, the Canadian Pacific Railway completed the sale to Norfolk Southern of more than 280 miles of track from Schenectady, through the Southern Tier to Sunbury, Pennsylvania. The sale meant that Canadian Pacific ceased rail operations on that corridor as of September 18th, it also means that the Canadian Pacific Holiday Train will not operate on that line in the communities formerly visited by the Train, Canadian Pacific announced that they will make 1 final donation to the food pantries affected by the sale in the southern tier this year.

A fire at 1133 Webb Hill Road in Davenport destroyed the Gannon residence yesterday. Firefighters from Davenport, Pindars Corners, and East Meredith Fire Departments responded to call, which went out at around 10:45 Monday morning. Officials said that the homeowner was not home at the time, no injuries among firefighters were reported, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Police reports said that a Silver Buick ran a red light & crashed into a vehicle driven by a pregnant woman in her 20’s who was treated for minor injuries at an area hospital. Police said that the driver of the Buick left the scene, returned a short time later and left again. Police found Marijuana in a pipe in the vehicle and paperwork belonging to the Broome County Native, Bones is considered the main suspect in the case.

The Delaware County Sheriff’s Department announced that on Friday evening, 11 year old Nicholas Dungan of Hamden passed away at Albany Medical Center from injuries he sustained in an ATV accident in the Town of Hamden on Tuesday April 21st. Dungan lost control of the vehicle while attempting to make a turn, he overturned into a ditch, he was airlifted a short time later to the Albany Medical Center by LifeNet helicopter Tuesday afternoon with serious head injuries.

The Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force and the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office concluded a month long investigation with the execution of a narcotics search warrant at 193 Matthews Street in the City of Binghamton. 26-year-old Christine Singer was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance & Unlawful Possession of Marihuana, 50 bags of heroin and an unspecified amount of marijuana were seized. Singer was also wanted on 3 active arrest warrants, on various drug charges from the City of Binghamton Court & the Town of Chenango Court, she was held at the Binghamton Police Department until her arraignment in the City of Binghamton Court.

State Police are investigating a 1 vehicle fatal collision on Saturday on Fredericks Road in the Town of Maine. A Jeep driven by 27-year-old Jason Coyne, of Newark Valley, went off the shoulder; Coyne overcorrected and hit a tree. Coyne was ejected and died at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt and alcohol appears to be a factor in his fatal collision. The accident was discovered and reported to the State Police several hours after it happened; Troopers are asking anyone with any information to call 775-1241.

State Senator Tom Libous released the results of his “Pocketbook Survey” on his website. Senator Libous said that over 5,800 constituents responded, the first question was, Libous asked if State funding of political campaigns with taxpayer money was a good idea, 10% said yes, 80% said no and 9% were not sure. Another question asked was, should the 2% property tax cap should be permanent, 77% said yes, 10% said no and 12% were not sure. Another question was regarding the desire of some New York Border towns seceding to become part of Pennsylvania, 37% approved of the ides, 42% disapproved and 13% were not sure. The Chenango Arts Council announced the allocation of $99,400 in cultural funding to 50 non-profit organizations and artists through the 2015 Broome, Chenango & Otsego Decentralization Grant Program. An additional $10,000 in funding for Broome County has been provided by the Stewart & Willma Hoyt Foundation, bringing the total cultural re-grant amount to $109,400 through the 2015 DEC Program.

The State Senate Budget Plan passed last week calls for the wiping out of the last year of the Gap Elimination adjustment, which was implemented during the last year of the Paterson administration. The Broome County Sheriff’s Department arrested 43-year-old Brian Potter of Port Crane on a variety of drug related charges. Potter was wanted by the Binghamton Police Department for a felony drug warrant, he was located at the Kirkwood Motel with counterfeit cash, & drugs Saturday. Deputies accuse Potter of attempting to flee, they confiscated a shotgun, $14,000 in counterfeit bills, more than 60 grams of marijuana and a small amount of an undisclosed narcotic. Potter was arraigned for possession of a forged instrument, criminal possession of weapon, criminal possession of a controlled substance & resisting arrest among other charges; he was remanded to the Broome County Jail without bail.

Firefighters from Oxford, Norwich, Guilford, Preston, Brisben and McDonough responded to a fire early this morning on Wakefield Lane in Oxford. Firefighters found a fully involved barn fire, was collapsing with an exposure directly behind. Fire crews managed to extinguish the fire quickly & keep it from spreading to nearby structures; the cause of the fire has not yet been announced.

Governor Cuomo has signed a bill that delays for 1 year, the mandated electronic filing of Prescriptions to pharmacies, which was originally scheduled to go into effect on March 27th. Mandatory electronic prescribing was part of the “I-STOP” program, to keep people from getting prescriptions from a number of doctor & bring them to a number of different pharmacies, a practice known as doctor shopping.

The state DEC is reminding area residents that all residential brush burning is prohibited in smaller communities starting today through May 14th. Open burning is the largest single cause of wildfires in New York State. Debris burning accounts for about 36% of wildfires in the state. Violators of the open burning state regulation are subject to both criminal and civil enforcement actions, with a minimum fine of $500 for a first offense. Governor Cuomo today announced that New Yorkers would save more than $500 million on health insurance premiums in 2013 because the Department of Financial Services cut rate increase requests by insurers. Health insurers requested weighted average increases of approximately 12.4 percent, but DFS, cut the average increase to 7.5 percent. Additional Information is available at governor.ny.gov.

24-year-old Jovan Gresham of Vestal pleaded guilty to assault and weapons charges for shooting a man 8 times at the former Victoria’s Restaurant in Binghamton in 2010.  Gresham pleaded guilty to 1st degree assault and 2 counts of 2nd degree criminal possession of a weapon, for the shooting of Karlshen Marks, and for unlawfully possessing a loaded  handgun in the City of Binghamton.  Gresham faces sentencing on April 1st; he was released on a cash bail bond of $50,000.

The Chenango county sheriffs department arrested 55-year-old Mitchell Farwell on charges of 2nd degree Harassment and Resisting Arrest.    Farwell was charged following an investigation into a noise complaint in the Town of Norwich, he is accused of pushing the responding Deputy during his investigation and then attempted to prevent an arrest from being made. Farwell was arraigned in the Town of Norwich Court and remanded to the custody of the Sheriff on $500 cash bail.

Firefighters responded to a fire at 1065 Delaware County Highway 11 in Davenport Friday that destroyed a 2 story home.  The Layton family escaped without injury, but they lost family possessions a few pets in the blaze.  Firefighters from Davenport, East Meredith, Meridale, Oneonta, West Oneonta, Schenevus, Otego, Stamford and FAST units of Franklin and Worcester responded.  The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The Chenango county sheriffs department arrested 19 year old Joseph Daring of New Berlin on a 2nd degree harassment charge.   Daring is accused of grabbing of an unidentified victim by the neck during an argument.  Daring will appear in the Town of Norwich Court at a later date.

State Senator Jim Seward & Congressmen Chris Gibson toured Otsego County today.  Seward attended the Otsego County Chamber State of the State Breakfast in Oneonta, followed by tours of Ioxus, Corning, and Custom Electronics in through the afternoon.  Both men were recently re-elected to their positions & were sworn in last week to serve their next terms.

A former Otsego county motel manager has turned himself in to local authorities, after allegedly cashing a forged check in Oneonta last year.  24-year-old Kyle VanDewerker is accused of cashing a $600 check while serving as the manager of the Amber Life Inn Motel in Colliersville, a warrant of arrest was obtained for VanDewerker from the Oneonta City Court following a complaint form the motel owner.   VanDewerker faces court action shortly.
