State Police were dispatched Christmas day at about 12:30 PM to assist the Oneonta City Fire Department with a fully engulfed single wide trailer at the Oneida Village Mobile Home Park on Oneida Street. Fire personnel located a deceased male in the residence. State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation responded to the scene, the deceased man has been identified as 50 year old Aaron Blakeslee, who resided in the trailer. Oneonta Fire Department reported that 1 dog and 2 cats also died in the fire, there were no injuries to any firefighters. Investigators are working with the City of Oneonta Fire Department and State Fire Investigators to determine the cause of the fatal fire.

The State Department of Public Service announced it has expanded its investigation into NYSEG and sister company Rochester Gas & Electric, for potential mismanagement of their utilities’ billing systems and protocols. The Department’s Consumer Advocate will host a series of public forums in affected areas starting in January to hear consumer concerns first-hand, after over 4700 customers complained of sudden spikes in their electric bills of about 60% on average earlier this year. Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested a Hamden man on charges stemming from a Menacing Complaint Tuesday. Deputies responded to a reported menacing complaint, Upon arrival Deputies interviewed 49-year-old Hayes Hathaway, deputies determined that Hathaway had pushed the victim from behind, displayed an axe while verbally threatening to cause harm to the victim and then terminated the victim’s electrical supply. Governor Kathy Hochul signed a legislative package to crack down on pandemic fraud. The Legislation increases the award amounts given to individuals who report fraud related to a State of Emergency. Currently, private citizens can file civil lawsuits on behalf of the government to help recover defrauded money and may be rewarded a percentage of the money recovered. With this new law, whistleblowers may be eligible to receive additional money if the fraud was perpetrated during a state of emergency.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced new guidance recommending booster doses for all New Yorkers ages 12 and older. The guidance, following action by the CDC, recommends that people, including the newly authorized 12-15 year-old age group, who received the Pfizer vaccine should receive a booster dose at least 5 months after their 2nd dose; the previous recommended interval was 6 months. Moderately to severely immunocompromised 5-11-year-olds can receive an additional primary dose of the Pfizer vaccine 28 days after their 2nd dose. The CDC recommended the same change to a 5 month booster interval for the Moderna vaccine, which is only authorized for people 18 years and older.

]]>State Police arrested 36 year old William Sabines of Preston after he was indicted by a Chenango County Grand Jury Thursday. Sabines was charged with 2nd degree Murder, Concealment of a Human Corpse and Tampering with Physical Evidence. Sabines was arrested following an investigation into the disappearance of Jesse Donlin, formerly of Sidney, Unadilla and Afton locally. Donlin was reported missing in September of 2019 after failing to appear for a court appearance in Utica, the investigation ultimately led to Sabines arrest. Sabines was remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $250,000 cash bail or $500,000 bond pending future court action.

A Chenango County jury found Jeremy Coates of Norwich guilty of the murder of David Green in Oxford in 2016. The New York State Court of Appeals ruled today that DNA evidence presented by prosecutors in a trial, must be accompanied at trial by at least one analyst involved in the critical stages of the processing of the DNA Evidence used, or who independently analyzed the raw data. The Court of Appeals ruled 4-3, that DNA evidence otherwise violates a defendant’s constitutional right to confront an accuser. The ruling follows a controversial Brooklyn trial where DNA evidence was presented & eventually convicted a man, who will now get a new trial.

Governor Cuomo signed legislation to strengthen financial support for the families of terrorist attack victims. The new bill will allow insurers to waive commission fees associated with the purchase of annuity insurance for families affected by any terrorist attack on the United States, expanding on the current law which only allows a waiver for families affected by the September 11, 2001 attacks. Insurers will now be able to offer their services pro-bono and provide further financial relief to families.

The Chenango Arts Council announced the allocation of $99,400 in cultural funding to 50 non-profit organizations and artists through the 2015 Broome, Chenango & Otsego Decentralization Grant Program. An additional $10,000 in funding for Broome County has been provided by the Stewart & Willma Hoyt Foundation, bringing the total cultural re-grant amount to $109,400 through the 2015 DEC Program.

The State Senate Budget Plan passed last week calls for the wiping out of the last year of the Gap Elimination adjustment, which was implemented during the last year of the Paterson administration. The conference committees are made up of 5 members of each house who will work to develop a final spending plan before April 1st, the Committees can be viewed at nysenate.gov.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Department arrested 43-year-old Brian Potter of Port Crane on a variety of drug related charges. Potter was wanted by the Binghamton Police Department for a felony drug warrant, he was located at the Kirkwood Motel with counterfeit cash, & drugs Saturday. Deputies accuse Potter of attempting to flee, they confiscated a shotgun, $14,000 in counterfeit bills, more than 60 grams of marijuana and a small amount of an undisclosed narcotic. Potter was arraigned for possession of a forged instrument, criminal possession of weapon, criminal possession of a controlled substance & resisting arrest among other charges; he was remanded to the Broome County Jail without bail.

Firefighters from Oxford, Norwich, Guilford, Preston, Brisben and McDonough responded to a fire early this morning on Wakefield Lane in Oxford. Firefighters found a fully involved barn fire, was collapsing with an exposure directly behind. Fire crews managed to extinguish the fire quickly & keep it from spreading to nearby structures; the cause of the fire has not yet been announced.

Firefighters from East Meredith, Davenport, and Pindars Corners responded to a fire at Sheehan & Pumpkin Hollow Road in East Meredith at about 8:30 Saturday morning. The Roe family escaped uninjured, the fire is believed to have started with the wood stove.

Firefighters responded to a fire at 32 Newland Street in Otego Saturday morning at about 9:00 AM. The unidentified family of 4 escaped without injury, the damage was minimal, the fire is believed to have started in clothes dryer.

Governor Cuomo has signed a bill that delays for 1 year, the mandated electronic filing of Prescriptions to pharmacies, which was originally scheduled to go into effect on March 27th. Mandatory electronic prescribing was part of the “I-STOP” program, to keep people from getting prescriptions from a number of doctor & bring them to a number of different pharmacies, a practice known as doctor shopping.

The state DEC is reminding area residents that all residential brush burning is prohibited in smaller communities starting today through May 14th. Open burning is the largest single cause of wildfires in New York State. Debris burning accounts for about 36% of wildfires in the state. Violators of the open burning state regulation are subject to both criminal and civil enforcement actions, with a minimum fine of $500 for a first offense. Governor Cuomo today announced that New Yorkers would save more than $500 million on health insurance premiums in 2013 because the Department of Financial Services cut rate increase requests by insurers. Health insurers requested weighted average increases of approximately 12.4 percent, but DFS, cut the average increase to 7.5 percent. Additional Information is available at governor.ny.gov.

24-year-old Jovan Gresham of Vestal pleaded guilty to assault and weapons charges for shooting a man 8 times at the former Victoria’s Restaurant in Binghamton in 2010. Gresham pleaded guilty to 1st degree assault and 2 counts of 2nd degree criminal possession of a weapon, for the shooting of Karlshen Marks, and for unlawfully possessing a loaded handgun in the City of Binghamton. Gresham faces sentencing on April 1st; he was released on a cash bail bond of $50,000.

The Chenango county sheriffs department arrested 55-year-old Mitchell Farwell on charges of 2nd degree Harassment and Resisting Arrest. Farwell was charged following an investigation into a noise complaint in the Town of Norwich, he is accused of pushing the responding Deputy during his investigation and then attempted to prevent an arrest from being made. Farwell was arraigned in the Town of Norwich Court and remanded to the custody of the Sheriff on $500 cash bail.

Firefighters responded to a fire at 1065 Delaware County Highway 11 in Davenport Friday that destroyed a 2 story home. The Layton family escaped without injury, but they lost family possessions a few pets in the blaze. Firefighters from Davenport, East Meredith, Meridale, Oneonta, West Oneonta, Schenevus, Otego, Stamford and FAST units of Franklin and Worcester responded. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Children in the Walton central school district have been receiving death threats as well as Violent & suggestive images through Facebook. About a dozen students were targeted, through their Facebook accounts; Walton police hope to have an arrest shortly.

The Chenango county sheriffs department arrested 19 year old Joseph Daring of New Berlin on a 2nd degree harassment charge. Daring is accused of grabbing of an unidentified victim by the neck during an argument. Daring will appear in the Town of Norwich Court at a later date.

State Senator Jim Seward & Congressmen Chris Gibson toured Otsego County today. Seward attended the Otsego County Chamber State of the State Breakfast in Oneonta, followed by tours of Ioxus, Corning, and Custom Electronics in through the afternoon. Both men were recently re-elected to their positions & were sworn in last week to serve their next terms.

A former Otsego county motel manager has turned himself in to local authorities, after allegedly cashing a forged check in Oneonta last year. 24-year-old Kyle VanDewerker is accused of cashing a $600 check while serving as the manager of the Amber Life Inn Motel in Colliersville, a warrant of arrest was obtained for VanDewerker from the Oneonta City Court following a complaint form the motel owner. VanDewerker faces court action shortly.
