Nauman Hussain was sentenced to 5 to 15 years in prison following victim impact statements at the Schoharie County Court today, he was convicted on 20 counts of manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide, Hussain operated Prestige Limo, which owned the uninspected stretch limo that crashed in Schoharie where 20 people were killed in October 2018. Hussain’s Attorney is expected to appeal.

The State DEC is warning New Yorkers of an increased Fire danger today, as much of the state has had little to no rain over the last 10 days & there will be higher temperatures over the next few days. There are currently 11 active wildfires in the state, all were started by human activity.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office was called to the scene of a pedestrian-train accident near the Crocker Hill Rd area in the Town of Fenton Tuesday. The Sheriff’s Office stated that 17-year-old Jakob McCloe of Port Crane was walking westbound on the Norfolk Southern Railroad Tracks near Crocker Hill Road, he was wearing noise-canceling headphones and was unable to hear the train approaching, the engineer attempted to signal multiple times to get McCloe’s attention, he was unable to stop the train, and at 8:53 am, McCloe was struck and killed and pronounced at the scene. McCloe was a student at the Chenango Valley School District.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office reported that Shawn McMahon of Binghamton was the pilot & only occupant of a plane that crashed Sunday in Norwich. The National Transportation Safety Board said that the Cessna 182D plane crashed just before 3:00 PM Sunday about 1 mile west of the Eaton Airport, he had taken off from the airport and was attempting to return to the airport at the time of the crash. The investigation has been opened by the NTSB and the FAA.

The Norwich Fire Department responded Monday to a fire at Peacock Manor Apartments on Brown Street. Firefighters arrived at about 2:10 PM, where they encountered heavy smoke on the first floor. Firefighters located the fire, which was extinguished and under control within minutes. EMS crews evaluated 4 residents at the scene, with 2 taken to UHS Chenango Memorial ER for smoke inhalation, they were treated & released, No firefighters were injured.

Bradley Law of Harpursville was arraigned Tuesday in Broome County Court for Leaving the scene of a fatal motor vehicle accident and criminal possession of a firearm. Law is accused of running over 13 year old Brennan Loveless as he was riding a bicycle on January 1st on State Route 7 near his home on Belden Manor Road in Sanitaria Springs. Law allegedly fled the scene, Loveless was eventually taken to Syracuse Children’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Law was apprehended the following day after he reported that his pickup truck had driven into a ditch along Bevier Street in an attempt to avoid striking a deer, investigators determined that Law’s truck was the one that had struck and killed Loveless.

Delaware County District Attorney’s Office announced that 41 year old Jason Dufton of Hancock, was sentenced to 7 years in state prison, and 15 years of post-release supervision for his conviction of Course of Sexual Conduct Against a Child in Delaware County Court Tuesday. Dufton engaged in at least 2 sexual acts with a 10-year-old female child, in the Town of Hancock, he was also ordered to submit a DNA sample to the State DNA databank, he must register as a sex offender after he is released from prison.

33 year old Ammar Ali of Albany was sentenced to 2 to 4 years in State prison after pleading guilty to felony Criminal Mischief in Broome County Court. Ali admitted that on July 19, 2022, in the Town of Union, he cut off an electronic monitoring ankle bracelet while on probation, he was previously convicted for Bail Jumping in 2015,

3 jurors have been dismissed in the Nauman Hussain Case in Schoharie County Court. Initially, 16 jurors were seated, 12 regular jurors and 4 alternates, The trial is down to 13 total jurors. 2 jurors were excused on Tuesday, 1 from breathing issues & 1 of them was allegedly high on Marijuana, after that Judge Peter Lynch told them he won’t tolerate jurors smoking marijuana before coming to court. The Delaware County District Attorney’s Office announced that 39 year old Leigh Murray of Patterson, New York, was sentenced on her conviction for Driving While Intoxicated, in Delaware County Court on Monday, Murray was sentenced to 6 months incarceration, to be followed by a 5-year term of felony probation supervision, she must complete a drug and alcohol evaluation and comply with recommendations, her license was revoked, and she was ordered to pay fines and surcharges totaling $5,200, she must install an ignition interlock device on any vehicle she owns or operates.

Governor Kathy Hochul today issued an Executive Order to help provide aid to asylum seekers expected to arrive in New York as federal Title 42 immigration policy is set to expire on May 11. The Executive Order will provide the State with greater flexibility to procure the resources necessary for municipalities to support asylum seekers while also allowing the State to increase the number of National Guard service members providing logistical and operational support. The State continues to work with New York City on selecting appropriate sites within the city & not into the upstate counties, to shelter asylum seekers as they await legal work status.

The Delaware County DA’s Office announced that 51 year old Terri Nocella of Downsville pleaded guilty to DWI in Delaware County Court. Nocella admitted to being intoxicated on October 18 2022 on the Case Hill Road in Franklin, she had a previous conviction for DWI. Nocella was sentenced to 5 years of felony probation supervision, she must complete a treatment program, her license was revoked & she was ordered to pay fines & surcharges of more than $2200, she muse install an interlock device on all of her vehicles.

Terry DeCutler of Sidney & Nicholas DeCutler of Unadilla were sentenced in Otsego County Court, to 20 years to life in prison, for the murder of Kaleb O’Neill in Oneonta on Memorial Day last year. The DeCutler brothers both pleaded guilty to 2nd degree Murder, for the fatal stabbing of O’Neill in an alley near Dietz Street in downtown Oneonta.

In the new State Budget Plan, there is an Increase in the State excise tax on cigarettes and little cigars. Effective September 1st, the State excise tax on cigarettes will increase by $1.00 per pack of 20 cigarettes. Governor Kathy Hochul today announced more than $7 million for 15 providers across New York State to support medication for addiction treatment. The funding is being distributed through the State’s Opioid Settlement Fund, Awardees are providers certified by either various state agencies including the the Office of Mental Health, & the Department of Health. Opening statements began in Schoharie County Court Monday, in the trial of Nauman Hussain. Hussain is the owner of Prestige Limousine, he is charged with criminally negligent homicide and second-degree manslaughter in connection with the 2018 crash in Schoharie that killed 17 passengers, the driver and 2 people in a gas staion in Schoharie, where the vehicle’s safety is in question.

Broome County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to reports of a vehicle in the Chenango River Friday off of I-88 near Exit 3. The updated report stated that 21 year old Colby Degnan went off the highway into the Chenango River, he & passenger Colleen Bobola escaped the vehicle as it started floating down the river & was sinking, Bobola was able to make it to shore, the currents swept Degnan further down the Chenango River. Deputy Mark Hamilton tied a rescue line around his waist before jumping into the river, Hamilton brought Degnan back to shore, but he was unresponsive, CPR was performed, Degnan was transported to Wilson Hospital where he remains in critical condition, Bobola was taken to Wilson Hospital for minor injuries and released. The Broome County Sheriff’s Accident Reconstruction Unit is currently investigating the accident.

Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 32 year old Tyler Newman of Unadilla following a motor vehicle accident on April 24, 2023 in the Town of Unadilla. Newman was charged with Driving While Intoxicated, Aggravated DWI, Refusal to Take Breath Test, Speed not reasonable and prudent among other charges, on County Highway 3 in Unadilla. Newman will appear in Town of Unadilla Court on May 8th.

Johnnie Hardwick of Binghamton will spend 12 years in jail following a hold up at Weis Markets in Binghamton last October. Hardwick was approached by a store employee & pulled a knife and threatened to stab the employee. Hardwick has previous convictions of Sexual Abuse and Attempted Robbery, he is classified as a persistent violent felony offender under state law.

State Police are warning New Yorkers of a computer scam. Police report that when logging on to a computer, a message is displayed on the screen that states to contact Microsoft due to a virus, the victim then contacts the phone number provided and speaks with a person who identifies themselves as a representative of Microsoft’s Security Office. The victim is then told their bank account information has been compromised. Anyone who receives a message to reach out to “Microsoft” support should not call & should never provide any personal information as it can be used to steal personal information.

Hussain is facing 20 counts of manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide, Jury Selection began this afternoon in Schoharie County Court.

The Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force raided 41 Doubleday Street on Tuesday. Police seized Opioids, methamphetamine, suboxone strips, 5 long guns and 2 handguns, they arrested 47 year-old James Roberts on drug and weapons charges & 43 year-old Danielle Ashdown on weapons charges. Thursday, officers pulled over a vehicle with stolen plates in Binghamton and seized hydrocodone, ecstasy and a pair of handguns, 1 was reported stolen from Owego, they arrested 44 year-old Rondell Wright, 34 year-old Calvin Chambers, 24 year-old John Carter and 38 year-old Shauna Massey. On Thursday, officers raided 1 Lawton Avenue in Binghamton and seized meth, fentanyl and drug selling materials. Police arrested 39 year-old Robert Titus on drug charges.

On April 22, Broome County Sheriff’s Office patrol responded to motor vehicle accident at State Route 12 and 12A in the Town of Chenango, 50 year old Jennifer Chamberlain of Binghamton was talked out of the vehicle by a deputy as gas was spilling onto the pavement, fire fighters responded to the crash and leak. Chamberlain attempted to make a turn, but veered wide left, crossing lanes of traffic. Her vehicle jumped over a raised curb and continued over a mulch bed striking several signposts and bushes before coming to a stop in the gas station parking lot. The broken signposts had ruptured the vehicle’s gas tank. Chamberlain’s BAC was .27%, over 3 times the legal limit, she was charged with Driving While Intoxicated, Aggravated DWI with a BAC of 0.18 or more, Speed Not Reasonable & Prudent, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation among other charges, she was arraigned and released on an appearance ticket for Town of Chenango Court.

Attorney General Letitia James announced that 340 firearms were turned in at a community gun buyback event hosted by her office and the Johnson City Police Department. Attorney General James’ office held 9 gun buyback events statewide with more than 3,000 guns turned in, including 185 assault rifles, 1,656 handguns, and 823 long guns. In Johnson City, they received 25 assault rifles, 169 handguns, and 114 long guns.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced that the Public Health and Health Planning Council passed an emergency regulation and the Health Commissioner issued a determination requiring all teachers, administrators and other school employees to submit to weekly COVID-19 testing unless they show proof of vaccination, with either a CDC vaccine card or the Excelsior Pass.   The Governor also announced that the State Department of Health has finalized and released official guidance for classroom instruction regarding Facemasks, which closely echoes the CDC guidance which districts were advised to follow. The operator of Prestige Limousine, 31 year old Nauman Hussain, has pleaded guilty to 20 counts of negligent homicide in connection with the fatal Limo crash in Schoharie in 2018.   Hussain will be placed on interim probation for 2 years, will serve 1,000 hours of community service, he will not serve jail time & he was ordered to pay an undisclosed amount of money in restitution to the families of the deceased.  The October 6th, 2018, crash killed 18 people in the limo including the driver, plus 2 pedestrian in the parking lot of the Apple Barrel Convenience store at State Routes 30 and 30A in Schoharie.

Governor Kathy Hochul signed legislation extending virtual access to public meetings under the State’s Open Meetings Law, which allows New Yorkers to virtually participate in local government meetings during the COVID-19 pandemic, as long as the public has the ability to view or listen to the meeting and as long as the meeting is recorded and later transcribed. This change will reduce the need for congregation at public meetings while the Delta variant is prevalent, while ensuring public business can continue.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Department announced the arrest of Caleb Casteline of Apalachin for the fatal stabbing of Q-Quan Richardson of Binghamton, at a party in Endwell Wednesday.  Casteline was charged with 2nd degree murder and faces court action on the charge shortly.

The Delhi Village Police Department executed a search warrant on August 21st at 219 Main Street; they seized concentrated cannabis in a variety of forms, as well as LSD, cocaine, marijuana, oxycodone, packaging materials & $1,500 cash from suspected drug sales.  Delhi Police arrested 20-year-old Alana Blaustein of Delhi & 22-year-old Connor Guiseppone of Delhi on a variety of drug charges, both were arraigned in Delhi Town Court where & were released on their own recognizance pending future court action.

State Police responded to a report of a tractor trailer rollover north of the Pennsylvania state line on I-81 at about 11:45 AM Wednesday.  A trooper responded & discovered that the tractor trailer struck the guide rail, continued off the roadway and overturned.  The driver was a 57-year-old male from Quebec who declined hospital treatment, the investigation is ongoing.

State Troopers were dispatched by Broome County 911 to a one-car crash near the intersection of Fox Farm and Reagan Roads in the town of Windsor Wednesday morning.  Troopers discovered that the vehicle went off the roadway and struck a utility pole, the driver was still in the vehicle and unresponsive.  The unidentified driver was pronounced deceased at the scene and an autopsy was ordered.

Former State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver started his prison sentence Wednesday at a federal prison in Otisville, where he will serve 6 1/2 years following a corruption conviction.  Silver left the Assembly in 2015, was convicted a short time later & various appeals & a retrial kept him out of prison.    Silver was convicted twice for administering political favors, as a new inmate, Silver will be tested for COVID-19 and placed in quarantine for 14 days.

Utica Firefighters were called to a massive fire at the former CharlesTown Mall in Utica.    Firefighters from the Utica & surrounding Fire Departments responded at about 1:30 this morning, Utica city officials are advising residents in the eastern sections of the city to remain indoors with their windows shut due to the high winds whipping the smoke & ash around from the blaze.

The State Health Department announced another 791 positive COVID 19 cases on Wednesday statewide after over 83,000 tests were administered.  490 were hospitalized for the virus, 4 deaths were reported, bringing the state death toll to 25,309.

Chenango County Public Health reported that they are still at 223 total cases of COVID 19 since March, with 75 active Quarantines, 1 person is hospitalized, there have been 201 recoveries, 7 deaths & over 21,600 tests have been performed.

The National Transportation Safety Board released documents this week regarding the Prestige Limousine crash in Schoharie on October 6th 2018.  The Board’s Investigators said that The ownership of Prestige Limo took great pain to register the vehicle in a many to avoid safety regulation & twice a year required inspections.  The vehicles brakes failed approaching a t intersection, it crashed into a gas station, killing 2 people in the parking lot & all 18 in the limo.   Nauman Hussain faces 20 charges each for manslaughter & criminally negligent homicide as the operator of Prestige Limousine.

The Otsego County District Attorney’s office announced that Nicolas Meridy of Oneonta has pleaded guilty in a plea bargain arrangement & will serve 22 years to life.  Meridy was arrested along with several others following the murder of Kenneth Robinson in Worcester & the arson fire at Robinson house after the fatal shooting, in October of last year.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested a New York City man Tuesday following a property damage accident on County Highway 26 in the Town of Colchester.  23-year-old Evian Camacho of New York City had a suspended driver’s license, for failure to answer summonses in both Bronx and New York counties and for failure to pay a State DMV driver responsibility assessment.    Camacho was charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and moving from a lane unsafely.  Camacho was released and directed to appear in the Town of Colchester Court on a later date.

Otsego County Department of Health is investigating 9 cases of coronavirus reported Wednesday, 5 of the cases are SUNY Oneonta students. The other 4 cases have been associated with a gathering of high school students. All cases are have been investigated and contacts are being notified.  Currently, Otsego County now reports 128 total confirmed cases, with 15 active cases, 1 person is hospitalized.  The Otsego County Health Department is holding another free COVID 19 testing this morning from 9:00 AM to 12:00 NOON at the former “Greenies” site on state route 7 in Otego, This testing site is for Otsego County residents only who preregister by calling 547-4279.

Delaware County Public Health received 1 positive lab report for COVID-19 Wednesday, giving them 102 total cases since March.  Currently, 3 patients are recovering at home, 93 have recovered, 6 have died, and 29 are under Mandatory Quarantine.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a 22 year-old Q-Quan of Binghamton, following an investigation into an altercation early Wednesday Morning.  Quan was taken to Lourdes and later Wilson hospital with stab wounds, he apparently was stabbed at a large gathering in the town of Union, The suspect fled the area, and anyone with information should call the Sheriff’s Office at 778-1196.

The Broome County Sheriff’s department arrested 25 year old Keenan Johnson of the town of Chenango twice Tuesday.  Johnson reportedly had a dispute with his girlfriend, he was confronted by neighbors & displayed a handgun, he fled the scene, was located by deputies & was charged with Menacing and Criminal Possession of Marijuana before being released on an appearance ticket, he was arrested a short time after his release at the girlfriends residence, fled on a Motorcycle the chase was terminated due to public safety concerns.  Additional charges against Johnson are pending.
