Jerell Thompson of Binghamton, pleaded guilty in Broome County Court to Attempted Criminal Possession of a Weapon. On December 23, 2023, Thompson was found to be in possession of a loaded Handgun after a traffic stop by State Police. Thompson will be sentenced to 5 years in New York State Prison and 5 years post-release supervision. Sentencing is scheduled for April 24, 2024, in Broome County Court.

41 year old Amy Kille of Walton appeared in Delaware County Court Monday & pleaded guilty to 1 count of Driving While Intoxicated & 1 count of Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle. On August 30, 2023 Kille was pulled over after driving erratically in the Village of Walton, her license had been revoked for a prior DWI, her BAC was .25%, more than 3 times the legal limit, sentencing will be on March 25, Kille will be sentenced to a 5-year term of probation supervision, she will be required to successfully complete the Delaware County Adult Treatment Court Program, her license will be revoked, and she will be required to install an ignition interlock device in any vehicle she owns or operates.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Office announced that 34 year-old Krystynne Bliss of Sidney is facing a charge of Promoting Prison Contraband, On January 19th, members of the Delaware County Sheriffs Office Criminal Investigation Division received information that Bliss entered the Correctional Facility while in possession of with Schedule 3 controlled substance, Bliss was arraigned at the Delaware County Central Arraignment court and returned to the corrections facility on an earlier unrelated charge.

State Police at Troop C responded Monday Afternoon to assist the Cortland County Sheriff’s Department at a residence on Homer Avenue in the City of Cortland. Gunfire was exchanged inside the residence. A person inside the residence sustained injuries and was transported to Upstate Medical Center. No officers were injured during the incident. The investigation is ongoing, there is no danger to the public.

The Binghamton Rumble Ponies announced that Reid Brignac returns as manager, along with Pitching Coach AJ Sager, Hitting Coach Darin Everson, and Bench Coach Mariano Duncan. Juan Loyo joins the staff as the team’s development coach. Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded last Thursday to a domestic incident in progress in the Town of Meredith. Upon arrival one of the individuals involved was identified as 32- year-old Edward Reed of Meredith, a tinfoil containing a white powdery substance along with a scale was discovered within the residence, Deputies charged Reed with criminal possession of a controlled substance and criminal use of drug paraphernalia, . Reed was released on appearance tickets returnable at a later date to the Meredith Town Court.

The Guthrie Clinic will take over operations at Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton Thursday. The take over includes all of Lourdes facilities, including the new clinic at the Oakdale Commons, a new name for the facility will be announced Thursday.

The U.S. National Science Foundation has designated the New Energy New York Storage Engine as a Regional Innovation Engine, at Binghamton University. They will receive up to $15 million for 2 years and up to $160 million over 10 years to establish a hub that will accelerate the growth of the domestic battery industry.

The State Department of Health announced that laboratory-confirmed cases of influenza decreased by 19% from the prior week’s report, but the flu remains widespread across the State for the 18th consecutive week. There were no influenza-associated pediatric deaths reported this week, there have been 9 reported this flu season. For the week ending February 4th, there were 2,374 lab-confirmed cases reported, 196 people were hospitalized with influenza statewide, a 48% decrease from the previous week.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested 52 year old Stephen Kiss of Davenport, after Deputies received a complaint from 2 people claiming that their landlord has been harassing them repetitively, with one incident involving a motor vehicle. On January 7th, Deputies arrested Kiss on 2 counts of Harassment, he was served with 2 Orders of protection, which was granted by the Davenport Town Court. Kiss is scheduled to return to the Town of Davenport Court on a later date to answer for this charges.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office announced multiple charges resulting from a weeks-long investigation into a conspiracy to smuggle and distribute illegal drugs into the Broome County Sheriff’s Correctional Facility. On February 8, a member of the CIU observed a visit between incarcerated individual Marcello McDonald of Queens and visiting Ethan Papathomopoulos of Endicott, during which the investigator believed an exchange of contraband by a handshake. McDonald refused a body scan search, was placed in a cell, a pink container filled with 7.3 grams of Fentanyl was discovered in the catch basin. As a result of the investigation, McDonald, Papathomopoulos & 21 year Justice Marimberga of the Town of Maine, plus 21 year old Alexis Merrill of the Town of Maine were all arrested on a variety of drug charges, and all are being held in the Broome County Correctional Facility.

On Friday night, February 10th, 2023, Sheriff’s Deputies received a hit on their License Plate Reader of a vehicle with a Suspended Registration, they conducted a traffic stop, Deputies arrested 42 year-old Katara Bush of Bronx, for Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Suspended/Revoked Registration, and Obstructed View, Bush was released on the uniformed traffic tickets and is scheduled to appear in the Town of Delhi Court at a later date.

Oneonta Fire Department responded to a fire at the Motel 88 on Chestnut Street Thursday afternoon.  The fire was started in an unoccupied room, 2 adjacent rooms suffered damage, it was knocked down in less than an hour, no injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Edmeston Central School announced that they had over 25% of the school quarantined due to COVID-19.  The Edmeston District went to remote learning Thursday & will stay remote through next Friday, in-person learning will start again on Tuesday, January 18th.  All after school activities and games have been postponed.

Binghamton Police are investigation the shooting of an 18 year old Binghamton High School Male Student, near the High School Thursday morning at about 11:15.  The victim was taken to an area hospital, the School district implemented lockdowns at all buildings, Binghamton Police arrested a 17 year old suspect for attempted murder & criminal use of a fire arm, the investigation is ongoing.

New Yorkers will again have the chance to apply for pandemic rental aid and temporary protection from eviction.  A State Supreme Court Judge issued a preliminary injunction ordering New York to reopen its application portal at otda.ny.gov, for rent relief in 3 business days. The state stopped accepting rental assistance applications in November.  The ruling protects families vulnerable to eviction when New York’s statewide moratorium expires January 15th.

State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli is urging New Yorkers to spend the gift cards they received this holiday season in a timely fashion, if not the money could eventually get turned over to the Office of Unclaimed Funds. In the last 7 years, the amount returned to DiNapoli’s office in unused gift cards has risen sharply from $5.8 million in 2014 to $16 million in 2021.  After five years of dormancy, money from unused gift cards issued by New York businesses is turned over to the Office of Unclaimed Funds as abandoned property.

New York’s Independent Redistricting Commission met January 3 to approve new maps that would shape those districts for the next 10 years, but ended the meeting with two separate proposals.  The Commission sent its 2 plans to lawmakers for consideration during the 2022 session.

State Police released more details about Wednesday arrest of 29 year old Anthony Masi of Sidney, who was wanted for 1st degree Assault in Oneonta on December 30 & also charged for Criminal Possession of Stolen Property,  Sidney Police Department spotted Masi in a stolen vehicle and attempted to stop him, he failed to comply and fled from Sidney Police and Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies on State Route 8 in the town of Masonville, Troopers attempted to stop Masi, who again failed to comply, he was stopped on State Highway 17 in Hancock and was taken into custody.  Masi was processed on the Stolen Property charge, was arraigned & was released & ordered to appear in Hancock Village Court at a later date; he was then turned over to troopers, was arraigned on the Assault charge & was remanded to the Otsego County Jail on $50,000 bail or $500,000 bond.

The State Health Department & the Governor’s Office announced that the Omicron Variant of COVID 19 continues to spread quickly.  Over 377,000 were tested Wednesday, with 84,202 positives, for a 22.3% positivity rate.  Patient Hospitalization increased by 317 to 11,184, Patients in ICU bed were up to just over 1,400 with 695 on ventilators and 130 New deaths reported by healthcare facilities from COVID.

SUNY Oneonta will host one of the state’s 10 new COVID-19 community testing sites,  which opens today,  in the training room of the college’s new Emergency Services Building, located at the lower end of campus, and is open to anyone in the community who is experiencing mild to moderate COVID symptoms. Appointments are required and must be scheduled in advance. Testing, which is saliva-based, is provided at no cost to individuals. The site will be open from 8:30 am to noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays. The Oneonta site is scheduled to operate through the end of February.  Appointments for testing at the Oneonta site can be scheduled at bit.ly/covid-test-oneonta.

OTSEGO COUNTY OFFICE OF EMERGENCY SERVICES announced that KN95 masks will be made available, FREE for distribution to the public, beginning today at the American Legion COVID test site in the Village of Milford, located at 86 West Main Street in Milford, as well as the SUNY Oneonta COVID test site.  An additional distribution site is being established at the Richfield Springs Fire Department in the coming week.

Delaware County is 1 of 6 counties in New York State chosen to receive support from the State Health Department to conduct COVID vaccination clinics. Personnel from The State and the National Guard will support the county operated clinics beginning today in Sidney at the Sidney Elks Lodge on River Street from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM, as well as on Saturday & January 28th and 29th. The second clinic will be in Stamford at the Catskill Veterans Outreach Center, from 11AM-7PM, on January 14th, 15th & February 4th and 5th.
