The Broome County Sheriffs department responded to the report of a fatal car crash on interstate 81 in Whitney Point.  69 year old Jules Abramowitz of Morristown New jersey was killed after his vehicle left the road, became airborne and slammed into a concrete bride, near the Whitney Point exit, at around 10:00 AM Monday.  Abramovitz was pronounced dead at the scene,  the investigation is continuing.

Firefighters responded to the report of 2 trailers on fire in Mount Upton early this morning.  The fires were reported at around 3:00 AM, at 115 Carney Lane, with firefighters from Mount Upton, Guilford, New Berlin, Gilbertsville, and Oxford responding.   trailers were completely destroyed, the cause of the fire is under investigation, and no injuries were reported.

State Senator Jim Seward announced support for a full State DOT study of traffic safety issues along State Route 8 near the Chobani plant.  Seward said that constituents have notified him of the increased number of accidents; he wants a study done to see what can be done to improve safety and allow for Chobani’s continued growth at the Edmeston site.

The son of Boxing Great Joe Frazier; Marvis Frazier will making appearances this weekend at 3 locations, for book signings of his biography “Meet Marvis Frazier”, co-written by Jamie Potter of Otego.  Frazier told WCDO News that he wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps, but didn’t make it to heavyweight champion status:

The Owego Fire Department confirmed that Captain Matthew Porcari was killed and Firefighter Daniel Gavin was injured, after a floor collapsed at a house fire in Newark Valley.  Porcari died in the fire, Gavin suffered burns & was taken to Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City & was then transferred to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse.  The Owego Fire Department had responded to a call for mutual aid to the fire at 871 Chamberlain Road in Newark Valley, the fire was reported just before 11:00 PM last night.

Officials at the state university on Oneonta reported that 56 students who were living on the 3^rd floor of Matteson Hall have been able to remove their belongings and have been moved to other dorms on the campus, since last weeks fire.  121 students who had been living on the 1^st & 2^nd floor are being housed temporarily at the Holiday Inn on Route 23 Southside; officials expect that they will be able to move back into their dorms rooms before the weekend.  The fire was started last Wednesday by a defective power strip in a 3^rd floor dorm room, officials said that the 3^rd floor will be closed for the remainder of the semester for clean up and renovation.

The U.S. Department of Education reported that the New York graduation rates increased to 76% in the 2009-2010 year, an increase from 61% percent in 2002-2003.  The graduation rate was 78 percent nationally.  The survey reported that New York’s dropout rate was 3.6%, compared to 3.4% percent nationally, and an improvement by almost 2% since 2002-2003.

State Troopers in Greene arrested 27-year-old Dustin Curtis of Smithville Flats for Felony DWI, 1^st degree Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Vehicle, 4^th degree Criminal Mischief and Unlawful Possession of Marihuana. The arrest resulted from a domestic dispute investigation; Curtis was arraigned and sent to Chenango County Jail on $10,000 bail pending a felony hearing.

State Troopers from Troop “C” in Sidney arrested 24-year-old Ryder Terpak of Unadilla on 3 counts of 7^th degree Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance and Prescription Not in the Original Container. The arrest resulted from a traffic stop on Interstate 88 in the Town of Bainbridge; Terpak was issued tickets returnable to the Town of Bainbridge Court on January 31^st.
