The Appalachian Regional Commission announced approval of an INSPIRE grant in the amount of $378,704 to the Leatherstocking Education on Alcoholism/Addictions Foundation, also known as LEAF, to support individuals in recovery with education & workforce training, to improve their chances for successful employment and sustained recovery. LEAF Project Coordinator Kyleen Joslyn told WCDO news that the stigma of hiring those in recovery is lessening, in the face of the current workforce shortage in area counties:

The funeral for 13-year-old Brennan Loveless was held this afternoon at Osterhoudt-Madden Funeral Home in Harpursville. Loveless was struck by a hit-and-run driver while riding his bicycle on January 2nd, 34 year-old Bradley Law of Harpursville was charged with criminally negligent homicide and leaving the scene of a fatal motor vehicle accident, Law was released from the Broome County Jail after recently posting Bail.

The Department of Labor will be holding the Southern Tier Regional Virtual Job Fair on Thursday, January 19th, from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. Preview day is on Wednesday, January 18th. The Broome County Sheriff’s Office is looking for a man who stole a motorcycle from a Town of Fenton business. The investigation revealed that the Motorcycle was stolen in the overnight hours of New Year’s Eve into New Year’s day, & the man was caught on video searching the exterior of a local business before returning and stealing the motorcycle. New York State has collected more than $709.2 million in taxes on legalized sports betting on the 1st anniversary of the wagering law going into effect. An additional $200 million in licensing fees has also been collected, revenues from mobile sports wagering are distributed as follows: $5 million to fund sports programs for under-served youths, $6 million to fund problem gambling education and treatment, the remaining funds education aid.

Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 38 year old Shawn Fowlston of Norwich for 2nd degree sexual abuse, forcible touching, unlawful imprisonment and endangering the welfare of a child, following reported attacks on 2 teen-aged girls. Fowlston was on parole and wearing an ankle bracket with a GPS monitor, he is a level 3 sex offender, with previous rape & sexual abuse convictions. Fowlston was remanded to the Chenango County Jail without bail for violating his New York State Parole, more charges are expected.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a one car motor vehicle accident with injuries on State Highway 10, near Bobs Brook Road in the Town of Walton. Deputies found a vehicle had left the roadway, struck an earth embankment and a tree, causing the vehicle to rollover, then coming to rest in the lane of travel. The driver was 44-year-old Timothy Bennett of Walton, he was charged with DWI, aggravated driving while intoxicated with a BAC greater than 0.18%, Aggravated Unlicensed Operator among other similar charges, Bennett was released on tickets returnable to the Town of Walton Court at a later date.

Property tax levy growth for school districts and the state’s biggest cities will be capped at 2%, the same as last year, according to data released today by State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. The tax cap limits annual tax levy increases to the lesser of the rate of inflation or 2% with certain exceptions, including a provision that allows school districts to override the cap with 60% voter approval of their budget. The 2% allowable levy growth affects the tax cap calculations for 676 school districts and 10 cities with fiscal years starting July 1st.

The Chenango county sheriffs department, Norwich city police and from the US Marshals, apprehended Shawn Fowlston in a room at the Sherburne Motel last night.  Fowlston was wanted on 2 warrants for forcible touching and harassment.  Fowlston had been released on parole on Monday following a recent conviction for 3rd degree rape; the alleged incident occurred on Tuesday, Fowlston faces action in Norwich city court today.

There have been alarming changes in the drugs used illegally in Delaware County in the last year, with the comeback of one drug particularly troublesome, according to Delaware county sheriff Tom Mills:

Mills said that strong Marijuana is also a problem, leading many to gateway into heroin.  Another problem is prescription medications making there way out of the medicine cabinet & into the black market, according to Dave Ramsey of the Delaware county Alcohol & drug Abuse council:

The State labor Department released the February unemployment numbers today.  The state’ rate was at 8.4%, the upstate counties suffered through 9.2% unemployment for the 2nd straight month, the southern tier region was stuck at 9.6% in February.

The Chenango county sheriffs department arrested 27-year-old Brad Perry of Plymouth for unlawful possession of marijuana, & 22-year-old Todd Williams for failure to appear.  The arrests followed a traffic stop in oxford Monday; Perry was issued an appearance ticket for oxford court at a later date.  Williams was taken into custody and was transferred over to the Norwich City Police Department for failing to appear in court to answer to a charge of disorderly conduct.

New York State Assemblyman Eric Stevenson of the Bronx & 4 others have been arrested by the FBI on Bribery, Conspiracy & other charges.  Another state assembly member is unidentified, but was listed in a sealed indictment and is cooperating with authorities in the corruption probe.   Stevenson is accused of receiving $19,000 in cash from 3 businessmen seeking preferential treatment for their businesses.

State Troopers arrested 21-year-old Michael Nodine of Sidney for Criminal Possession of Marihuana and Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs. The arrest was the result of a traffic stop for failing to obey the “Move Over Law” in Oneonta, Nodine was released on an Appearance Ticket returnable to the Town of Oneonta Court on April 23rd.

Spring Valley Mayor Noramie Jasmin was charged Tuesday with mail fraud as part of the corruption case involving former State senator Majority Leader Malcolm Smith.  Jasmin is accused of voting to approve a development in exchange for receiving a secret part ownership of the land where the development would be built.  Spring Valley Deputy Mayor Joseph Desmaret has also been charged with mail fraud, all 6 involved in the Malcolm Smith case face court action on April 23rd.

A 3.8 Million dollars federal disaster award was made by the Economic Development Administration to the Delaware County IDA; to assist with Amphenol’s plans to move to a new location on Delaware Avenue in Sidney.  Sidney Village Mayor Andy Matviak explains:

Mayor Matviak said that this money is in tandem with the $10 million dollars in funding from the state, to move out of their flood prone site in Sidney to the new site adjacent to the Sidney K-Mart.  Plans call the new facility to be up & running in May 2014.

Norwich City Police are looking for 28 year old Shawn Fowlston of Norwich, a paroled level 3 sex offender who is wanted on 2 separate warrants. Anyone with information about Fowlston’s whereabouts is asked to call Norwich Police at 334-1212.

The Chenango county sheriff’s department arrested 21-year-old Ashley Miller of Pitcher for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance.  Miller was found to be in possession of prescription medication that she did not have a prescription for, during a traffic stop in the town of pitcher.   Miller was taken into custody without incident, processed, and released on an appearance ticket to appear in the Town of Pitcher Court at a later date.

State Troopers of Oneonta arrested 24-year-old Jordan Nardolillo of Cheektowaga, for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance.   The arrest resulted from a traffic stop on State Route 28 in Oneonta,  Nardolillo was arraigned in the Town of Oneonta Court and remanded to the Otsego County Correctional Facility in lieu of $500 cash bail.

The Chenango county sheriff’s department arrested 19-year-old Cody Burkhart of Bainbridge on an active Arrest Warrant for the charge of 2nd degree Criminal Contempt.   Burkhart allegedly made a harassing phone call to the protected party of an Order of Protection issued from Chenango county court, he was arraigned in the Town of Guilford Court and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $2500 cash bail.  Burkhart is to appear in the Town of Bainbridge Court on a later date.
