State Police responded Wednesday to an SUV Rollover accident on Frost Hill Road in the town of Plainfield, where the vehicle driven by 28 year old Amber Brown of Rome went off the roadway, struck an embankment and partially overturned. 3 year old Amina Estrada was pronounced dead at the scene, 2 adults & 4 children in the Estrada family were taken to Saint Elizabeth Hospital in Utica for further medical care. The accident is still under investigation.

This Sunday would have been the 7th birthday of Trinity O’Connor of Sidney, the little girl who died from cancer earlier this year. The Trinity O’Connor Foundation will celebrate her birthday Sunday at 4:00 PM at Keith Clark Park, spokesperson Kim Ayres explains:

The State DEC announced that remaining Deer Management Permits in several Wildlife Management Units will be available to hunters starting Tomorrow. New Yorkers needing help paying their heating bills can begin applying for home heating assistance on Tuesday, November 1. The Home Energy Assistance Program, also known as HEAP, can provide up to $976 this winter to help low- and middle-income households and senior citizens, Nearly 1.7 million HEAP benefits were issued last winter, the highest in at least the past five years. Similar demand for assistance is expected again this winter. Applications can be found at mybenefits.ny.gov.

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer announced that Upstate New York will receive over $50 million in federal funding through the first round of the EPA’s Clean School Bus Program to purchase over 130 brand new electric school buses. Locally, the Downsville central School District will receive over $395,000 for the purchase of 1 new electric school bus.

State Police arrested 50-year-old Robert Stilson of Unadilla for Driving a Vehicle While Ability Impaired by Drugs, Unlawful Possession of Marihuana, and other traffic violations. The arrest followed a traffic stop by a Trooper for a loud exhaust on State Route 8, in the town of Guilford; the trooper determined that Stilson was driving impaired. A search of the vehicle recovered marihuana and concentrated cannabis; Stilson was issued tickets returnable to the town of Guilford Court on February 6th.

The U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear former State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver’s bid to block his retrial on corruption charges, April 16th is the start date for Silver’s new trial in Manhattan federal court. Silver was convicted on charges that he took payoffs disguised as legal fees in return for using his political power to benefit political supporters, the conviction was overturned last year by the Second U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals because of flawed jury instructions. Silver was found guilty and was sentenced to 12 years in jail; he never entered jail as the case was on appeal.

State Police arrested 30-year-old Paige Shaul of Oneonta on charges of 3rd degree Grand Larceny & filing a false instrument with intent to defraud, in connection with an incident on January 8th. Shaul faces court action at a later date.

The Oneonta Police Department received the final autopsy findings regarding the investigation into the December 2nd, 2017 death of 18-year-old Daniel Michaels of Dix Hills. The report determined the manner of death was accidental, due to mixed drug toxicity from amphetamines, ethanol, Xanax & Marijuana. The investigation into the Michael’s death is continuing.

Fire Fighters in Unadilla responded to a Fire at 42 Ontio Terrace in Unadilla Wednesday afternoon. The two story building was fully involved when crews arrived, Fire Fighters from Wells Bridge, Sidney, Franklin, Otego, Sidney Center responded, no injuries were reported, the investigation is continuing.

State Troopers initiated a pursuit of a suspect in Binghamton Tuesday afternoon. 36 year old James Giacalone of Glen Aubrey was wanted on an active warrant, he led police on a pursuit through the city’s Southside, on Conklin Avenue, he crashed his vehicle into a utility pole, troopers tried to take Giacalone into custody, but he backed his vehicle away from troopers into a parking lot. Troopers approached the vehicle, Giacalone accelerated forward, striking one of the troopers, who shot Giacalone in the face, he then attempted to flee again. Giacalone was eventually taken into custody & was brought to Wilson Hospital and transferred to another hospital in Pennsylvania for treatment of gunshot wound to the face. The injured trooper was taken to Wilson Hospital for leg and facial injuries and was treated and released. State Police are asking the public for any witnesses or information related to this incident at 775-1241.

Troopers were advised of 2 incidents where Fekete was allegedly sounding a loud alarm outside his home and then yelling at separate neighbors, which violated an order of protection. Fekete was arraigned in the town of Bainbridge court and was remanded to the Chenango County jail on $20,000 cash bail. His next court date is pending.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office & State Police arrested 23-year-old Geraldo Rivera of Greene for 2nd degree Burglary. Deputies arrested Rivera following a report that he was found inside the victim’s residence by the victim. Rivera was arraigned in the Town of Greene Court and remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $10,000 cash bail pending future court action.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit upheld New York State’s denial of a water quality certification for the proposed Constitution Pipeline. The Pipeline would include construction of 100 miles of new natural gas pipeline across Central New York, crossing more than 250 streams and more than 80 acres of wetlands. In 2014, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission approved the pipeline but conditioned that approval on certification from New York State, the State DEC denied the certification on the grounds that they failed to provide sufficient information that the project would meet the state’s standards.

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced that New York has agreed in principle to join a state-federal $465 million settlement with Mylan Inc. New York led a coalition of states in the investigation that resolved allegations that Mylan knowingly underpaid rebates owed to Medicaid for the drugs EpiPen® and EpiPen Jr.® that were dispensed to Medicaid beneficiaries. Under the settlement, New York will receive $38.5 million.

State Police arrested 60-year-old Lawrence Jaeger of Edmeston for felony Grand Larceny, after troopers were advised of a theft of funds from the Burlington Flats Fish and Game Club, in the town of Hartwick. An investigation determined that, while acting as the club treasurer, Jaeger had stolen just over $50,000 from the club funds, from June 2010 up until May 2017. Jaeger was arraigned in the town of Hartwick court and was released without bail; his next court date is on September 13th.

The State Police issued 21,148 tickets during this year’s “Speed Week” campaign, which was conducted from Wednesday, August 2nd through Tuesday, August 8th. Troopers issued 9,205 tickets for speeding, 348 for distracted driving and arrested 234 people for driving while impaired. State Police also responded to 268 personal injury accidents, which resulted in 5 fatalities and 393 people injured.

Governor Cuomo announced that the state’s new $7.6 million Community Restoration Fund has purchased the mortgages for 398 homes in an effort to bring owners in targeted communities out of foreclosure and keep the homes from becoming “Zombie Properties”. The 398 homes in the program are in 33 of the State’s 62 counties, 7 of the homes are in the Southern Tier.

State Police responded to a call for a person in the water at the Whitney Point dam at Dorchester Lake. Trooper Donald Atkinson entered the water and swam to the dam’s outflow tunnels and located the 14-year-old victim, who was unable to swim out of tunnel due to the strong current. A Good Samaritan entered the water, throwing Trooper Atkinson a rope, Trooper Lawrence Gurdo entered the water, and assisted Trooper Atkinson, the victim grabbed a rope & was pulled to safety. The victim was transported to Lourdes Hospital for treatment.
