State Police CNET arrested 36 year old Matthew Mazepa of Harpursville, in the City of Binghamton on active felony bench warrants from Chenango County Court. Mazepa was found to be in possession of an assault rifle, crystal methamphetamine, cocaine, crack cocaine, marihuana, ammunition and drug paraphernalia. Mazepa was charged with Criminal Possession Controlled Substance, Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Tampering with physical evidence, Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia & Resisting Arrest, he was arraigned and remanded to the Broome County Jail without bail.

State Police arrested a 21-year-old man following a domestic incident. Joshua Backus of Greene was charged with 2nd degree Burglary, Criminal Possession of a Stimulant, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, 4 counts of Menacing and Harassment and Unlawful Possession of Marihuana. Troopers were called to a residence in the Town of Oxford to investigate a domestic dispute; Backus pushed 2 subjects and threatened them with a hammer, pointed a gun at them and attempted to hit them with his vehicle. Troopers observed Backus drive by the residence, he was arrested, arraigned and was remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $40,000 cash bail or $80,000 bond pending Grand Jury action on April 18th.

Erin Collier of Cooperstown, who is a candidate for Congress in New York’s 19th district, announced today that she has qualified to be on the ballot for the Democratic Primary on June 26th. Collier’s campaign filed over 2,700 signatures in support of her candidacy with the State Board of Elections, more than double the required number of signatures.

New York state students in grades 3-8 improved their performance in math in the 2nd year of Common Core testing, but their performance in English & Language Arts was the same. This year scores also showed significant gaps between racial and economic subgroups again. Common Core is expected to be a hot political issue in the coming gubernatorial campaign, with Republican & Conservative candidate Rob Astorino and Liberal Democrat Zephyr Teachout both vowing to get rid of the Common core standards if elected.

The Public Employees Federation endorsed Democratic candidate Zephyr Teachout over incumbent Andrew Cuomo, after contentious contract negotiations during his first term in office, and changes to the pension system for future state employees with lowered benefits. Delaware County Sheriff Deputies responded to a Road Hazard Complaint on State Highway 17 in the Town of Colchester. Deputies found that 58-year-old Loren Holland of Bethel was operating a dump truck on State Highway 17 in the Town of Colchester, his load shifted and spilled bailed aluminum onto the highway, causing a road hazard. Holland was issued traffic tickets one for unsecured load and a commercial vehicle safety violation for having an expired medical card.

State Troopers at Oneonta arrested 62-year-old Dorothy Murphy of Oneonta for 3rd degree Grand Larceny. The arrest resulted from a complaint from the Smoker’s Choice on State Route 23 in Oneonta; Murphy was arraigned in the Town of Oneonta Court and released on her own recognizance.

A 17-year-old Stillwater residential treatment facility resident was arrested by Chenango County Sheriff’s Office for 4th degree Criminal Mischief in the 3rd Degree Menacing. A 17-year-old youth was arrested for intentionally damaging property and menacing a Stillwater staff member. The unidentified Defendant was arraigned in the Town of Greene Court and returned to the custody of Stillwater staff, and will appear in the Town of Greene Court at a later date.

The latest Quinnipiac University survey found 46% of state voters still opposed Hydraulic fracturing for natural gas, while Support for drilling increased slightly 42%. The vote was evenly split among upstate voters, while New York City residents were against it. The poll also found that 32% believe Governor Cuomo was dragging his feet at making a decision on gas drilling, while 24% believed that he was carefully weighing all options. Cuomo said that he is waiting for a health review from state Health Commissioner Nirav Shah, who has delayed the release of his findings twice this year.

33 year old Damien Ellison of Binghamton has been arrested on 2 counts of 3rd degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. The Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force arrested Ellison following the execution of a narcotics search warrant, he is accused of possessing 30 packets of heroin, a search of his home netted another 111 envelopes and $1,720 cash. Ellison will be arraigned in the city of Binghamton Court shortly.
