The City of Oneonta Department of Public Service announced this year’s schedule for curbside residential brush and yard waste pick-up. Those living in wards 1-4 will be have their yard waste picked up on Monday April 16th, those in wards 5-8 will be picked up the following Monday, April 23rd. Residents should have brush and yard waste out no sooner than the weekend before the scheduled pick-up to prevent possible code violation. Brush pick up will continue through the end of November.

State Police released more details about the death of Whitesboro Police Officer Kevin Crossley, who was killed Wednesday night when his patrol car collided with a pickup truck driven by 26-year old Nicole Moshier-Harris of Whitesboro. Investigators reported that there is no indication that drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash. Officer Crossley was a full-time member of the Whitesboro Police Department for 7 years, he was 34 years old.

The Delaware County Historical Association will feature Kurt Reigel, who owns & is restoring the Andrew Mann Inn on State Route 7 Riverside Sidney. The presentation will begin at 2:00 pm Saturday regarding the building that was built in 1787; it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. The 20th annual SADD “Strides for Safety” 5K will be held Sunday in Oneonta. Students will run, or walk from upper East Street to the Oneonta High School, money raised will go to facilitate activities that promote drug- and alcohol-free lifestyles, for teenagers.


State Police CNET arrested 36 year old Matthew Mazepa of Harpursville, in the City of Binghamton on active felony bench warrants from Chenango County Court. Mazepa was found to be in possession of an assault rifle, crystal methamphetamine, cocaine, crack cocaine, marihuana, ammunition and drug paraphernalia. Mazepa was charged with Criminal Possession Controlled Substance, Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Tampering with physical evidence, Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia & Resisting Arrest, he was arraigned and remanded to the Broome County Jail without bail.

State Police arrested a 21-year-old man following a domestic incident. Joshua Backus of Greene was charged with 2nd degree Burglary, Criminal Possession of a Stimulant, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, 4 counts of Menacing and Harassment and Unlawful Possession of Marihuana. Troopers were called to a residence in the Town of Oxford to investigate a domestic dispute; Backus pushed 2 subjects and threatened them with a hammer, pointed a gun at them and attempted to hit them with his vehicle. Troopers observed Backus drive by the residence, he was arrested, arraigned and was remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $40,000 cash bail or $80,000 bond pending Grand Jury action on April 18th.

Erin Collier of Cooperstown, who is a candidate for Congress in New York’s 19th district, announced today that she has qualified to be on the ballot for the Democratic Primary on June 26th. Collier’s campaign filed over 2,700 signatures in support of her candidacy with the State Board of Elections, more than double the required number of signatures.

Pierce was located in the Lowes Parking Lot in the Town of Norwich; he possessed several items used to manufacture methamphetamine using the “one pot” method. Materials were also located in Pharsalia and Preston. Pierce was charged with Unlawful Manufacturing of Methamphetamine, Unlawful Disposal of Methamphetamine Laboratory Material, and Criminal Possession of Precursors of Methamphetamine. He was arraigned in the Town of Norwich Court and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $50,000 cash bail. Additional charges are pending.

The accident claimed the life of 48-year-old William Sharpless of Nineveh and seriously injured four Bronx, NY, residents. Preliminary investigation revealed that Sharpless was struck head-on by a Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by 30 year old Crest Wood of Bronx. Wood, 34 year old Alnie Chisholm, 19-year-old Georgette King and 21-year-old Yolanda Jones, all of Bronx, NY, were seriously injured and were taken to Westchester Medical Center. Deputies are asking any witnesses to call 746-2336.

New York State’s private sector job count grew by 17,300, or 0.2% in July according to the State Labor Department. The State’s overall private sector job count is 7,603,300, the unemployment rate was unchanged at 6.6%. July marked the State’s 20th consecutive month of private sector job growth.

New York’s public university system is the first to support a bipartisan federal effort that would strengthen colleges and universities’ assistance, for sexual assault victims while establishing penalties for non-compliance. U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand said that the Campus Accountability and Safety Act l creates new standards for training, and calls for an anonymous annual survey of students, to provide an accounting of campus sexual assaults at colleges and universities.

New York state students in grades 3-8 improved their performance in math in the 2nd year of Common Core testing, but their performance in English & Language Arts was the same. This year scores also showed significant gaps between racial and economic subgroups again. Common Core is expected to be a hot political issue in the coming gubernatorial campaign, with Republican & Conservative candidate Rob Astorino and Liberal Democrat Zephyr Teachout both vowing to get rid of the Common core standards if elected.

The Public Employees Federation endorsed Democratic candidate Zephyr Teachout over incumbent Andrew Cuomo, after contentious contract negotiations during his first term in office, and changes to the pension system for future state employees with lowered benefits. Delaware County Sheriff Deputies responded to a Road Hazard Complaint on State Highway 17 in the Town of Colchester. Deputies found that 58-year-old Loren Holland of Bethel was operating a dump truck on State Highway 17 in the Town of Colchester, his load shifted and spilled bailed aluminum onto the highway, causing a road hazard. Holland was issued traffic tickets one for unsecured load and a commercial vehicle safety violation for having an expired medical card.

State Troopers at Oneonta arrested 62-year-old Dorothy Murphy of Oneonta for 3rd degree Grand Larceny. The arrest resulted from a complaint from the Smoker’s Choice on State Route 23 in Oneonta; Murphy was arraigned in the Town of Oneonta Court and released on her own recognizance.

The City of Norwich and Chenango County Emergency Management Offices today announced the release of a new smart phone app designed for emergency preparedness and response.  The app is available for iPhone and Android phones & is available by Searching “Norwich” or “Chenango”.  The application features NY-Alert, emergency evacuations, weather conditions, River and stream gauge information, school closings, NYSEG power outages & Road work updates.

A 17-year-old Stillwater residential treatment facility resident was arrested by Chenango County Sheriff’s Office for 4th degree Criminal Mischief in the 3rd Degree Menacing.  A 17-year-old youth was arrested for intentionally damaging property and menacing a Stillwater staff member.  The unidentified Defendant was arraigned in the Town of Greene Court and returned to the custody of Stillwater staff, and will appear in the Town of Greene Court at a later date.

The latest Quinnipiac University survey found 46% of state voters still opposed Hydraulic fracturing for natural gas, while Support for drilling increased slightly 42%.  The vote was evenly split among upstate voters, while New York City residents were against it.  The poll also found that 32% believe Governor Cuomo was dragging his feet at making a decision on gas drilling, while 24% believed that he was carefully weighing all options.  Cuomo said that he is waiting for a health review from state Health Commissioner Nirav Shah, who has delayed the release of his findings twice this year.

33 year old Damien Ellison of Binghamton has been arrested on 2 counts of 3rd degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.  The Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force arrested Ellison following the execution of a narcotics search warrant, he is accused of possessing 30 packets of heroin, a search of his home netted another 111 envelopes and $1,720 cash.  Ellison will be arraigned in the city of Binghamton Court shortly.

The Delaware county office for again announced that the annual Big Wheels Golf Tournament would be held at the Delhi College Golf Course on Friday, May 10th.   The event serves as a primary fundraiser for programs and services for Delaware County senior citizens.  The entry fee this year will be $60, more information is available through the Office for the Aging at 746-6333 or the Delhi College Golf Course at 746-GOLF.
