36 year old Jason Gerhard of Montrose Pennsylvania was found guilty in Broome County Court today for Criminal Possession of a Weapon. State Police responded to a home on Patch Road in the Town of Chenango last February, where Gerhard entered a residence without permission, he was in possession of an illegal handgun & was arrested, at that time, Gerhard was on probation for illegal possession of a .38 caliber revolver. Gerhard could spend 3½ to 7 years in State prison when he is sentenced on April 20th.

The Endicott Police Department arrested 44 year old David Scanlin for 3rd degree burglary, Grand Larceny and & 3rd degree Arson. The latest Sienna College poll shows that New York Voters approve of the job Kathy Hochul is doing as Governor 56-36%, her best marks since taking over as Governor. 6 of Hochul’s State of the State proposals have overwhelming support, but her proposal to allow SUNY to increase tuition is strongly opposed. In the same Poll, Voters Say that Long Island Republican Congressman George Santos should Resign from Congress, following a string of lies told on the campaign trail. State Police today announced the results of a January 17th speed enforcement initiative along the New York portion of U.S. Highway 20. State Police and local law enforcement agencies stepped up patrols during the morning and evening drive times. 25 Troopers from various Troops issued a total of 178 citations and gave 41 warnings. 104 of the citations issued were for speed.

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced the availability of up to $7.5 million for state-certified providers and other treatment programs to establish low threshold services to address opioid addiction. A New Sienna College Poll reports that 58% of New Yorkers Polled believe that the state should wait until early March before deciding whether to lift the school mask mandate, compared to 30% who say the school mask mandate should have ended already, and 10% who want to see it end after this week’s school break. On New York’s indoor public mask mandate 45% say that the mandate should still be in place, compared to 31% who say it should have ended already and 20% who say it ended at the right time. Also in the New Poll, 60% say crime is a very serious problem, 31% said it’s somewhat serious. By a 65-27% margin, voters say ‘the bail reform law should be amended to give judges more discretion regarding bail.

State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli today released a report showing that New York’s environment and sustainability initiatives are creating new green occupations, as well as creating additional demand for existing occupations and changing the skills required to fulfill others. In total, these occupations made up over 17% of all jobs in the state pre-pandemic. He urged the state to fund more educational and workforce development programs to grow the green economy and help bolster New York’s pandemic recovery. State DEC announced that the 2021 hunting seasons in New York were the safest ever, with the lowest number of hunting-related shooting incidents since record-keeping began. The Broome County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a rollover crash This Morning on State Route 17 in Windsor. The accident occurred around 3:00 this morning, Deputies found the vehicle, but not the driver, the investigation is continuing.
Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies assisted State Parole Officers recently with locating and arresting 40 year-old William McLean of Hobart on a Parole warrant issued by the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. McLean was found in possession of 6 different controlled substances at the time of his arrest and was charged with 6 counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance, he was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility to be held as a parole violator pending a future parole revocation hearing. State Police will increase patrols to combat drunk, impaired and reckless driving as St. Patrick’s Day celebrations get underway through Sunday. Members of the State Police held a private remembrance for the 10 year anniversary of Trooper Jill Mattice’s death at the State Police Barracks in Oneonta Monday. A remembrance was held then laid a wreath in front of the station barracks. 63-year old Ray Agard of Fort Plain was charged with DWI, Speed not reasonable & Prudent, criminal possession of a Controlled Substance among other charges, after he drove his car into the Jones residence on State Highway 28 in the Town of Milford. New York lawmakers convicted of abusing their power and sent off to prison may have their pensions removed, when voters will be asked in November whether to change the state constitution to authorize judges to strip pensions from corrupt politicians. 30 state lawmakers have left office since 2000 because of criminal charges or allegations of ethical misconduct. A new Sienna College poll finds Governor Cuomo is at his highest approval rating in 3 years. 61% of voters now say they view him favorably overall, and just over half 51% like the job he’s doing in office. Sienna officials said that Cuomo’s rise in popularity has steadily increased since President Trump’s inauguration on January 20th. The governor rated positively for higher education and human rights, but Cuomo needs to work on taxes, infrastructure and the economy.

Former State Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos and his son Adam were found guilty Friday of 8 counts of bribery, extortion and conspiracy. Dean Skelos was found guilty of using his power as Senate Majority Leader to get no show jobs to his son Adam. The conviction means that Skelos has been removed from the Senate seat that he held onto after resigning as Senate Leader in May.

The Upper Susquehanna Watershed Project will hold its annual conference on August 21st at 1:00 PM at Sidney High School. Students and teachers from the project will present reports on their research on the chemistry, biology,& hydrometeorology of the upper Susquehanna River basin. The project is an effort between area high schools from Cooperstown to Afton, and is directed by teachers from Sidney High School. The program is funded by ACCO & private donations. The latest Siena College poll asked New Yorkers about the most important issues for the fall election. 28% said jobs, 21% said taxes, and 20% said education and 17% corruption. Only 2% of those polled said hydraulic fracturing natural gas reserves was their top issue, 1% involved guns and the state’s gun-control law.

Governor Cuomo signed a new law that bans direct contact between people and lions, tigers, leopards, jaguars and cougars. The “Tiger Selfie” bill, is also directed at roadside zoos that charge people for photos with big cats. The governor said despite any level of training, big cats have instincts to kill. The penalty is $500 for the first offense.

Yesterday’s fire at Matteson Hall on the SUNY Oneonta campus has been ruled accidental. The investigators from the Oneonta Fire Department reported that the fire started as from a malfunction and the improper use of an electric plug strip on the 3rd. Inspectors ruled tat Matteson Hall is structurally sound, but the electrical infrastructure and 3rd floor fire alarms have been compromised. Disaster Clean-Up from Endwell, has been retained to clean the third floor, which is expected to take at least two weeks. The college will continue to offer shelter at Chase Gymnasium for students displaced by the fire & a plan for long-term housing is under development now. 177 students were affected. No injuries were reported.

State Police responded to a 1 car motor vehicle accident on Interstate 81 in Kirkwood, the investigation revealed the 3 Bronx residents in the vehicle possessed approximately 7 ounces of cocaine, marihuana, and various drug paraphernalia. Arrested were 21-year-old MAX OTANO for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, he was arraigned and committed to the Broome County Jail without bail. Police also charged 21-year-old STEVEN RIVERA for Unlawful Possession of Marihuana; he was issued an appearance ticket for the Town of Kirkwood Court and released. Police also arrested 21-year-old JOSHUA CRUZ for Reckless Driving and other vehicle and traffic law violations. CRUZ was issued tickets returnable to the Town of Kirkwood Court and released.

The state labor department announced that in December, the State’s economy added 34,300 private sector jobs, the state’s overall job gain to 123,200. the state reached an all time high private sector job count of 7,353,000. the December unemployment rate fell from 8.3% to 8.2%. the upstate counties rate dropped from 7.9% to 7.8%.

Governor Cuomo’s approval rating continues to be high among new Yorkers, according to the latest Sienna Polls, which were conducted between January 10th and 15th. The poll found Cuomo with a 71% favorability rating, and a 60% job-performance rating, almost identical to December’s poll numbers. Those polled also supported strong bans on assault weapons and increasing penalties on illegal gun purchases, which were 2 key provisions in the states new gun laws that were passed by the legislature earlier this week & signed into law by Cuomo Wednesday in Rochester.

State troopers in Oneonta arrested 33-year-old Stephanie Couse of Oneonta for Aggravated Harassment. The arrest originated from a complaint on State Route 23 in Davenport, Couse was issued an Appearance Ticket to appear in the Town of Davenport Court on January 22nd.
