Damage to trees was found near Oxford, the damage became more concentrated along Lyon Brook Road northeast of Oxford, where numerous trees were uprooted and snapped near Pratt Road. The tree damage pattern indicated either straight-line winds, indicating a microburst or a series of microbursts as opposed to a tornado. Structural damage included a large tree destroying a garage on Lyon Brook Road, and a peeled roof and a large tree on a house along Pratt road.

State Police arrested 38-year-old Joseph Wilms of Unadilla, for DWI, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation, Criminal Mischief & other traffic violations, after troopers responded to a report of an erratic driver on the Unadilla Community Field. Wilms is accused of driving on the field, causing damage to the grass, and then driving away, he was located in his driveway on Sperry Street; the arrest was a felony because Wilms has 2 prior DWI convictions. Wilms was arraigned in the Town of Unadilla Court and was remanded to the Otsego County Jail on $2,500 cash bail or $5,000 property bond, pending court action Friday.

Broome Count District Attorney Steve Cornwell announced today that Charles Burks was sentenced to 13 years in prison, and Jennifer Burks was sentenced to 9 years in prison, on 2nd-degree manslaughter and 1st degree assault convictions. The couple was accused of giving their son, 5-year-old Chace Burks a fatal dose of oxycodone on May 7th of 2016, and a debilitating dose of methadone in May of 2015.

State Police arrested 22-year-old Akil Wright of Brooklyn for Criminal Contempt, after troopers responded to a domestic dispute in Laurens. Wright’s conduct violated a valid order of protection. Wright was arraigned in the Town of Laurens Court and was released without bail being required. His next court date is on May 18, 2017.

State Police arrested 44-year-old Corey Christman of Oneonta for Disseminating Indecent Material to a Minor and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Christman was arraigned in the Town of Oneonta Court and remanded to Otsego County Correctional Facility on $10,000 cash bail or $50,000 bond, pending future court action.

A large wind turbine is being moved today down State Highway 12 from the North Norwich rest area to the Oxford rest area. This will cause major traffic delays, particularly in the City of Norwich, to get the load over the Canasawacta Creek Bridge around the lunch hour. Motorists are encouraged to avoid State Highway 12 if possible. You can use County Road 32/East River Road as an alternate.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 24 year old Francisco Rodriguez of Hancock Monday, on charges of Aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, failure to keep right, and unsafe lane change. Deputies say this arrest is a result of a traffic stop on East Front Street in the Village of Hancock. Rodriguez was arraigned in front of Judge Buckley at Hancock Village Court and was remanded to the Delaware County Jail in lieu of $1,000 bail.


NYSEG met its goal of restoring service to more than 90% of affected customers last night & is continuing with the restoration effort. More than 60,000 customers have been affected, around 57,000 customers have had their service restored. NYSEG expects to have power restored to the remaining customers this afternoon, Helicopter patrols are continuing to look for additional damage locally this afternoon.

The State Senate & State Assembly passed their budget resolutions this week, paving the way for the conference committees to begin negotiating the differences in the 2 plans next week. Both budget plans call for increases tuition assistance for college students and increasing aid to public school districts and tackling the state’s aging water infrastructure issues. Other issues include stopping the practice of prosecuting 16 & 17 year olds as adults in criminal cases, and allowing for Uber & Lyft to begin serving upstate counties.

Broome County Sheriff’s deputies are looking for 42 year old Nneka Simmons of Endicott, who is wanted on grand larceny and identity theft charges. Arrest warrants have been issued on the felony charges Simmons is described as 5 feet 2 inches tall, 205 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. The American Red Cross is urging all eligible donors throughout the state to give blood following the recent winter storm, which forced 56 regional blood drives to cancel and blood donations centers to shut down, causing about 1,480 donations to go uncollected. Officials said that there is a critical need for type O negative donors. Upcoming Blood drives will be held in Oneonta on Monday from 12:00 Noon to 5:00 PM at SUNY Oneonta, on March 27th from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM at the Southside Oneonta Holiday Inn, & March 28th from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM at the Oneonta Elks Club, on Chestnut Street. Manufacturing in New York State expanded for the 5th straight month in March, but at a slower pace that February, when activity reached the highest level in 2 years. The Federal Reserve Bank in New York reported that the empire state manufacturing index in march stood at 16.4, down from 18.7 last month, the level for new orders was the highest in several years, the level for unfilled orders jumped to the highest levels in about a decade. The increases follow 2 years of mostly flat output.

Firefighters from Cooperstown & surrounding communities responded to a fire in kitchen of the Phinney House Bed & Breakfast at 14 Elm Street in Cooperstown, at 7:30 this morning. The Vrooman family escaped from their house & safely removed nearby vehicles before firefighters arrived. The fire was under control in about 90 minutes, significant smoke and water damage was reported. The Cause of the fire is under investigation.

Oneonta Police Department received a call Friday Night from a citizen in southern New York State regarding an acquaintance who was stranded in Oneonta and possibly expressing suicidal and homicidal tendencies. Officers located 35 year old Samuel Browning of Philadelphia Pennsylvania, in the area of 145 Main Street. Browning was taken into custody without incident, he was found to be in possession of a loaded .357 magnum revolver and a small quantity of marijuana, the handgun had been reported stolen from the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Browning was charged with Criminal possession of a firearm, Criminal possession of stolen property, And Unlawful possession of marijuana. Browning was held at the Oneonta Police Department until arraignment in the City of Oneonta Court.

The CDC and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration are investigating an outbreak of Listeria infections. 6 people infected with the outbreak strain of Listeria have been reported from 4 states since last September, all 6 were hospitalized, and 2 people from Connecticut and Vermont died. The laboratory evidence indicates that soft raw milk cheese made by Vulto Creamery of Walton is the likely source of this outbreak, as all 6 people ate various types of soft cheeses in the month before their illness started. The outbreak strain of Listeria was identified in samples taken from three intact wheels of Ouleout cheese collected from Vulto Creamery; they have now recalled all lots of several types of their soft raw milk cheeses. This investigation is ongoing.

Fire Fighters from many area companies responded Sunday night to a Fire at the Milford Methodist Church. The fire was called in at about 7:00 PM, the church was heavily damaged & 2 nearby buildings had minor damage. Governor Cuomo announced that the New York State Environmental Facilities Corporation Board of Directors approved nearly $60 million in grants and interest-free and low-cost loans to support vital drinking water and wastewater infrastructure projects across New York State. The Village of Sidney will receive $9.4 million to improve source water quality by developing new wells, and/or providing the existing two wells with a treatment system. Additionally, water mains with poor pressure and frequent breaks will be replaced and meters will be installed on all remaining unmetered services.

Chenango County Sheriff’s Department arrested 2 Town of Greene residents for agriculture and markets law violations. Deputies arrested Martin and Mary Canny for 7 counts of failure to provide proper sustenance of farm animals and dogs, following a complaint on March 6th, the Leather Stocking Veterinary Clinic of New Berlin responded, they found numerous animals to be malnourished and recommended them to be removed from the property and offered assistance from the clinic. Martin and Mary Canny voluntarily gave up their rights to the rest of their animals, they were also taken to the Leather Stocking clinic.

The victim and the driver received head lacerations from the broken glass, Wilber was arraigned in the Town of Guilford Court and was remanded to the Chenango County Jail in lieu of $10,000 cash bail or $50,000 property bond, he faces action in Town of Bainbridge at a later date.

State Police arrested 29 year old Jonathan Robinson of Laurens for 3rd degree criminal mischief, the arrest occurred after an incident in early September at the Morris Central School parking lot, where Robinson allegedly slammed his fists down on the hood of another driver’s vehicle after a dispute, causing over $750 worth of damage. Robinson was arraigned in the Town of Morris Court and was remanded to the Otsego County Jail in lieu of $1,500 cash bail or $3,000 property bond.

The State Department of Labor today released preliminary local area unemployment rates for September. The State’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased from 4.8% to 5.0% in September, locally, Chenango County’s unemployment rate was at 4.7%, Delaware county was at an even 5%, & Otsego county had 4.4% unemployment in September.
