35 year old Charles Harrison of Binghamton was sentenced Thursday to serve 48 months in federal prison following his trial and conviction for possessing a firearm as convicted felon. The trial evidence demonstrated that, following his 2012 conviction in a federal court for Conspiracy to Possess and Distribute controlled substances, Harrison was serving the final portion of his sentence at a halfway house in Connecticut, he escaped, resulting in a warrant being issued for his arrest, US Marshals found him in March 2022 hiding under a mattress in an apartment in Binghamton, Marshals also located a loaded handgun next to Harrison, the jury voted to convict him of possessing the firearm Harrison was sentenced to serve 3 years of supervised release to begin after his prison sentence.

Delaware County Sheriff’s office arrested Thomas Taranto of South New Berlin for DWI, on State Highway 8 in the Town of Masonville. On January 11th, Deputies observed a vehicle traveling at 72 miles per hour in a 55 miles per hour zone, they performed a traffic stop & charged Taranto with driving while ability impaired by drugs, Speeding, obstructed plate, & Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Taranto released on the traffic tickets and an appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear in the Town of Masonville Court at a later date to answer the charges.

Broome County District Attorney’s office announced that Carheem Felton of Binghamton pleaded guilty Wednesday to Criminal Possession of a Weapon, on August 2nd 2022, Felton opened fire at another individual at the Northside Deli in Binghamton, Binghamton Police Department located Felton attempting to flee the scene while still in possession of the firearm. Felton will be sentenced April 17th to 9 years in prison and 5 years post release supervision.

The Sidney Center Improvement Group annual meeting will be held this coming Monday, at 6:30pm at the Sidney Center Fire Hall. The meeting is open to the public and all are welcome to attend. The Improvement Group Board is seeking new members and more involvement in order to continue bringing programming, events and improvement projects to the Hamlet of Sidney Center and for the Town of Sidney.

There is still time for New Yorkers to Apply for the HEAP program, to get help in paying for heating bills this winter. Low-income New Yorkers must show Proof of residency, have recent pay stubs for all household members, along with Photo Identification for each household member, more information is available at ny.gov/services.

Delaware County District Attorney’s Office announced that 25 year old Zachary Rowe of Harpursville appeared in Delaware County Court and pleaded guilty to Attempted Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Rowe appeared in Delaware County Court for a court conference on January 16th, he admitted that he possessed fentanyl in the Village of Sidney on October 1, 2023, and he intended to sell fentanyl, he also admitted to using drugs in close proximity to a child. Rowe was sentenced to a 5-year term of felony probation supervision, he must successfully complete the Delaware County Adult Treatment Program, if he does not successfully complete the program, he will be re-sentenced to 4 years in state prison and two years of post-release supervision.

The New York State Department of Labor today released preliminary local area unemployment rates for September 2023. The State’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased from 3.9% in August to 4.0% in September, locally Chenango County reported 2.9% unemployment, Delaware County 3.4% & Otsego County had 3.0% in September.

Local government sales tax collections in New York state totaled $5.9 billion in the third calendar quarter of 2023 (July – September), an increase of 3.6%, or more than $205 million, compared to the same period last year, according to a report released today by State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. This marks the second consecutive quarter of collections returning to lower pre-pandemic year-over-year growth rates. The full report can be found at osc.state.ny.us.

Governor Hochul announced that the state investment in renewable energy is continuing, with 3 Offshore Wind and 22 Land-Based Renewable Energy Projects, which is expected to power 2.6 Million New York Homes and Deliver 12 Percent of New York’s Electricity Needs in 2030. The Projects are projected to create about 8,300 Jobs and Bring $20 Billion in Economic Development Investments Statewide. Local projects will include Stonewall Solar will build a 145-megawatt solar facility co-located with 20 megawatts of energy storage in the Town of Meredith.

Hartwick College officials announced that they are hosting 2 Candidate Forums prior to Election Day. The Hartwick Institute of Public Service announced that the forums are for Otsego County and Oneonta Common Council candidates. Tomorrow, candidates running for election in Otsego County will participate, on Wednesday, November 1, the institute will host candidates running for election in the City of Oneonta. Both events are scheduled for 6-8 pm. in the Shineman Chapel House on the Hartwick College campus.

24 year old Zachary Rowe of Harpursville, appeared for arraignment on a 2-count indictment in Delaware County Court. On October 1st, Sidney Police Officer Royce Terry arrested Rowe on a bench warrant, after being taken into custody, Sidney K9 Officer Riggs conducted a search of his personal property, Riggs quickly discovered and indicated the presence of narcotics, Sidney Police obtained a search warrant & seized $7,000.00 in illegal methamphetamine and fentanyl. The indictment charges Rowe with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance with intent to sell, he was remanded the defendant to the Delaware County Correctional Facility without bail.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested 42 year old Brian Bennett of Oneonta for Criminal Contempt and 2 counts of Aggravated Harassment, following a Domestic incident, in the Town of Walton. On April 28th, 2022, Deputies responded to a Domestic incident, Bennett had been harassing 2 victims by electronic means and that 1 of the victims had a full stay away Order of Protection in place against Bennett. On May 4th, 2022, 2 arrest warrants were issued by the Walton Town Court, On October 11th Deputies arrested and charged Bennett on both arrest warrants, he was held at the Delaware County Correctional Facility to await centralized arraignment.

24 year old Zachary Rowe of Harpursville appeared for arraignment on August 7th, on a 3-count indictment in Delaware County Court. Rowe was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance for possessing Fentanyl & Methamphetamine with intent to sell, the drugs were in the presence of a 4 year old child. The case is scheduled for a conference in Delaware County Court on August 21, 2023.

New York Supreme Court Justice Kevin Bryant issued a temporary restraining order Monday halting the state from issuing or processing marijuana dispensary licenses. A veterans’ group lawsuit alleges the state’s Office of Cannabis Management created a licensing system that improperly limits initial licenses to people with drug convictions rather than a wider category of social equity applicants, such as veterans. Another lawsuit from a Michigan group claims that New York’s licensing system is unconstitutionally favors New Yorkers over out-of-state residents. Oral arguments will begin Friday in State Supreme Court.

Governor Kathy Hochul said the state will spend $108 million on the well-being of students, following a drop off of state scores & learning loss attributed to time missed in the classroom due to the pandemic. $100 million will go to school districts and BOCES to hire more teachers with specialized experience in managing and counteracting learning loss, another $8.3 million will go directly to expand school mental health clinics

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office arrested 42 year old Nathan Smith of Windsor for Burglary, Assault, Criminal Possession of a controlled substance, and Endangerment the welfare of a child charges, Smith is accused of breaking into a house & attacking a victim in front of children, on August 2nd. Deputies took Smith into custody, he was found with a small amount of methamphetamine, Smith was arraigned at central arraignment and released. He is due to appear in the Town of Windsor Court at a later date.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested 62 year old Kathleen Hibbard of Delhi after an investigation of a Motor Vehicle Accident. Deputies responded August 3rd to a Motor Vehicle Accident on State Highway 28 in the Town of Delhi. Hibbard was charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, operating a motor vehicle with a B.A.C of .08 or higher and moving from lane unsafely, she was ordered to appear in Town of Delhi Court at a later date.

Broome County Sheriff’s Office arrested 24 year old Amir Robinson of Binghamton for Unlawful Imprisonment, Tampering with Evidence, Menacing and Harassment, following a dispute with a firearm in the town of Dickinson on August 2nd. Deputies responded to a report of a male with a firearm who would not leave a room at the Econo Lodge on Old Front Street, he allegedly pointed a handgun at the victim and threatened to kill her. Upon arrival at the scene, responding deputies located Robinson in the nearby vicinity and detained him without incident. Robinson was arraigned at central arraignment and remains in custody pending future court action.

59 year old Valerie Alexander of Delhi, appeared in Delaware County Court, she pleaded guilty to Welfare Fraud and was sentenced to 9 months incarceration. Alexander admitted that she stole public assistance benefits totaling $2,530, she was ordered to pay restitution to the Delaware County Department of Social Services.
