62-year-old Almond Upton of Florida was sentenced to life in prison without of parole for deliberately running down State Trooper Christopher Skinner on I-81 in 2014. Upton was sentenced today in Broome County Court by Judge Joseph Cawley, following the 1st degree murder conviction for deliberately crossing several lanes to strike Trooper Skinner while he was conducting an unrelated routine traffic stop, at an excessive speed.

Crowds gathered at the Eichler residence on Country Club Road in Oneonta this morning to witness a 94-foot Norwegian Spruce tree being removed; it will become the 2nd tallest Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree ever. The tree was removed this morning; it will be transported to New York City, where the set up will begin Saturday. The tree will be lit up as part of a nationwide broadcast on November 30th.

The State DEC announced that Veterans Day would be a designated annual free fishing day in New York State. No license is required to fish in any of the state’s 7,500 lakes and ponds or 70,000 miles of rivers and streams. A listing of free fishing events is available at the DEC’s website.

The Oneonta city planning commission meeting scheduled for November 16th has been cancelled. The next regular meeting will be held on December 21st in the Common Council chambers at Oneonta City Hall at 7:00 PM.

A rally in support of the Sioux at Standing Rock of North Dakota is being held this afternoon in the Muller Plaza in Oneonta from 5:30 to 8:00 PM. The Sioux are at odds with a plan to have the Dakota Access Pipeline run through land that they consider sacred. More information is available at the “Stand with Standing Rock” Facebook page.
