Sentencing is scheduled for Ramadan Abdullah in Broome County Court today. Abdullah was arrested after police confiscated numerous weapons belonging to the Johnson City man, he did not have a permit to have the weapons. A jury found Abdullah guilty of 15 weapons charges following a recent trial.

A controversial natural gas compressor station proposal in the Town of Fenton was voted down Tuesday night by the Town Zoning Board by a 3 to 2 vote. NG Advantage officials stated that they are looking at other options for their compressor station proposal.

Governor Cuomo today announced additional funding is available to help eligible New Yorkers heat their homes following severe low temperatures this winter. Households in danger of running out of heating fuel or having their utility service shut off will be able to apply for a second emergency benefit beginning February 12th. There has been a 40% increase in requests for emergency heating assistance compared to last year, more information can be found at otda.ny.gov/programs/heap/contacts/.

Governor Cuomo today announced the state’s Community Restoration Fund has purchased 172 mortgages in a strategic effort to bring owners in targeted communities out of foreclosure and keep the homes from abandonment. The Community Restoration Fund has helped strengthen the financial position of homeowners, bringing stability back to the housing market in neighborhoods across the state. This latest effort brings the total investment through the Fund to $10 million, which has leveraged more than $111 million in private funds and enabled the purchase of 570 distressed mortgages to date. 9 of the properties were in the Southern Tier, 21 were in the Mohawk Valley & Central New York regions.

Governor Cuomo & local leaders today announced the grand opening of the Resorts World Casino in Thompson, in Sullivan County. The $1.2 billion resort features a 100,000 square-foot gaming floor, a luxury hotel, and multiple dining, retail and entertainment options as part of a larger development project on the site. Resorts World has created 1,500 permanent jobs at the resort, with another 600 expected once the entertainment village, water park and golf course open. Resorts World projects the resort and casino to bring in four million visitors per year. Resorts World Casino is the fourth commercial casino to open in New York since voters approved the New York Casino Gambling Amendment in 2013.

Oneida County native Erin Hamlin has been selected as Team USA’s flag bearer for the Opening Ceremony of the Winter Olympic Games in PyeongChang. Hamlin was born and raised in Remsen, she was chosen by a vote of fellow Team USA members. Hamlin made history at the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi 2014 when she became the first U.S. athlete ever to win an Olympic singles luge medal in the sport’s 50-year Olympic history. This is Hamlin’s 4th Olympic games, the Opening Ceremony will take place tomorrow.

State Police arrested 32 year old Ashley Harder of Binghamton for Unlawfully Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle, Driving While Intoxicated, Reckless Driving, and other traffic violations. Troopers responded to a report of a vehicle traveling in the wrong direction on Interstate 81 northbound, in the town of Triangle. A State Trooper pursued the vehicle in the wrong direction & the driver failed to comply and continued driving on I-81 northbound. The trooper pulled ahead, doubled back & deployed a tire deflating device, Harder was arrested, she refused to submit to a breath test & she was issued tickets to the town of Triangle Court on February 14th.
