12-year-old Melanie Loya of Bainbridge is currently competing in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Maryland, and has advanced to the finals. Television coverage of the event is being handled by ESPN live, with today’s’ coverage scheduled for 8:30 PM tonight.

State Police issued 12,169 tickets and arrested nearly 240 people for DWI this Memorial Day weekend, as part of the STOP-DWI traffic enforcement period. The initiative targeted impaired and reckless drivers, between May 26 and May 29. State Police and local law enforcement increased patrols and conducted sobriety checkpoints to deter, identify and arrest impaired drivers.

The states of New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware and New York City today announced an agreement on a plan to continue sustainable water management for the Delaware River. The New York City DEP will voluntarily release additional water from its Delaware System reservoirs to protect the ecological health of the Delaware River, maintain seasonal reservoir voids that enhance flood protection, and lessen the regional harm caused by the expiration of the Flexible Flow Management Program, which regulated the flow of water from the Cannonsville, Neversink and Pepacton reservoirs on the headwaters of the Delaware River since it was first adopted in 2008. The program had been extended for several years upon unanimous agreement of the governing bodies, which were given that authority by a 1954 U.S. Supreme Court Decree.

New York State is getting 35 million dollars to expand After-School Programs. The Governors office stated that the money would go to the school districts with the highest poverty rates, State officials are looking to increase after school participation by 36%, to more than 20,000 children statewide.

State Senator Jim Seward announced that community libraries throughout the 51st senatorial district have been awarded a total of nearly $700,000 in public library construction grant funds. Local Libraries receiving funding include Franklin, the Huntington Library in Oneonta, & Kinney Memorial Library in Hartwick.

The Delaware County Senior Council held its annual Big Wheels Golf Tournament on Friday, May 12, 2017 at the Delhi College Golf Course. The golf tournament was assisted by volunteers from the Delhi College Golf Course, Office for the Aging and the Treadwell Foster Home. More than 70 golf sponsors made donations to cover the cost of the event. 21 teams with 81 golfers participated in the tournament & raised close to $7,000, the money will be used to offset a variety of Delaware County senior programs and services for the elderly.

A free rabies clinic is being held in Chenango County today. The clinic for dogs, cats & Ferrets will be held at the North Norwich Firehouse from 5:30 to 6:30 today.


State Police arrested 74-year-old Marion Thompson of Sidney for 1st Degree Sexual Abuse & Endangering the Welfare of a Child. An investigation determined that Thompson allegedly had sexual contact with the victim who was less than 11 years old. Thompson was arraigned in the Town of Sidney Court; he was released in his own recognizance. Thompson’s next court date is on June 22, an order of protection was issued against him on behalf of the victim.

State Police responded to a report of shots fired on Butternut Lane in Roxbury. 57-year-old Kenneth Hinkley of Roxbury is accused of firing a few rounds into the air, from an unlawfully possessed assault rifle. Hinkley was arrested for Menacing, Reckless Endangerment, Criminal Possession of a Weapon; he was arraigned and remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $2,000 cash bail or $4,000 bond. His next court date is on June 7th.

Governor Cuomo announced that the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance stopped more than 330,000 suspicious refund claims during this year’s income tax season. Based on results from previous years, the Tax Department projects that stopping these refunds will save New York State and its taxpayers about $480 million this year—a savings increase of nearly 20 percent compared to the same period last year.
