The Village of Sidney is welcoming input from Main Street Businesses and the public about ideas to create a sustainable & resilient “Green Street” at an open house at the Sidney Library on June 30th at 6:30 PM. Village Spokesman John Redente explains:

Redente said that there would be a brief presentation of the Village Project Advisory Committee & Its Consultants about the project, an open house will follow where audience members can talk to the designers in small groups.

The State DEC is once again warning residents to avoid contact with the Giant Hogweed, which is a Federally listed noxious weed, It’s sap can cause severe skin and eye irritation, painful blistering, permanent scarring and even blindness. If you come in contact with giant hogweed, immediately wash the affected area thoroughly with soap and water and keep the area away from sunlight for 48 hours, and make sure to contact your family physician. Giant hogweed can grow to 14 feet or more, Its white flower heads can grow up to 2 1/2 feet in diameter & take the shape of an umbrella. If you find Giant Hogweed call the DEC Hotline at 1-845-256-3111, & Provide photos, detailed directions to the plant infestation and estimate the number of plants.

Governor Cuomo today signed legislation to prevent foreclosures and curb the threat posed to communities by “zombie properties.” The bill was passed as part of the 2016 Legislative Session; the legislation combats the blight of vacant and abandoned properties by expediting the rehabilitation, repair and improvement of these properties, and enabling the State to assist homeowners facing mortgage foreclosure. The package of bills Combats Blight Created by Zombie Properties by Imposing a Pre-Foreclosure Duty on Banks and Servicers to Maintain Zombie Homes, Creates an Electronic Registry of Abandoned Properties, and Expediting Foreclosure for Vacant and Abandoned Properties to Get Them Back on the Market.

State Police arrested 29-Year-old Terence Ito of Walton for reckless endangerment, two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, criminal mischief and harassment. This arrest occurred after troopers responded to a dispute on Palmer Hill Road in the Town of Franklin, where Ito allegedly struck his pregnant wife in the stomach in front of their 2 young children & interfered when she attempted to call the police for help. Ito was arraigned in the adjoining Town of Sidney court and was released without bail being required. An order of protection was issued.

State Police arrested 42-year-old Gwen Raake of Acworth, Georgia for DWI and other traffic violations. Raake is accused of speeding at 78 miles per hour on I-88 in the Town of Oneonta, while intoxicated. Raake was issued tickets returnable to the Town of Oneonta court on July 5th.

State Police arrested 45-year-old James Begin of North Adams, Massachusetts for DWI and other traffic violations. Troopers responded to a Delaware County 911 report of a van driving the wrong way on State Route 17 in the Town of Hancock. Begin was issued tickets returnable to the Town of Hancock on July 18th.

A Bobcat has tested positive for rabies in the town of Tompkins, the first animal testing positive for rabies in 2016, according to Delaware County Public Health Services. The Bobcat was sent to the State Rabies Laboratory for testing, there was no human exposure, a dog that was exposed to the rabid Bobcat was immunized against rabies, and is not in danger of contracting the disease. Delaware County Public Health announced that the next scheduled rabies clinic is at the Masonville Fire Hall on June 29th from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. Cornell Cooperative Extension of Delaware County will be sponsoring 3 farmers’ markets for the 2016 season in Sidney, Walton and Deposit, NY. The Deposit Farmers Market will be held at the First United Methodist Church, on August 18 & September 15, from 10:00 am to 2:00 PM. The Sidney Farmers Market will be held in the Video Entertainment parking lot, 89 Main Street, on Tuesdays from June 28 to August 30 from 2:00 to 6:00 PM. The Walton Farmers Market will be held at the Delaware Valley Hospital’s parking lot, on the 1st & 3rd Wednesdays from July 6th to October 19th from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
