Governor Cuomo today signed legislation enacting the Excelsior Scholarship to provide tuition-free college at New York’s public universities to families making up to $125,000 a year.

The legislation was passed as part of the State Budget, the Budget additionally includes $8 million to provide open educational resources, including e-books, to students at SUNY and CUNY colleges to help defray the cost of textbooks.

State Police Superintendent George Beach announced that the State Police have launched a new recruiting effort to attract qualified candidates to become State Troopers. The State Police will be holding a new Trooper entrance examination this fall, on October 7th, 14th. 21st & 28th at several locations around the state. Online applications are now being accepted at nytrooper.com.

The State DEC reminds residents that a statewide burn ban is in effect until May 14th. DEC officials said that the lack of snow cover over much of the state and rising temperatures in the forecast means that conditions are favorable for the rapid spread of wildfires.

The General Clinton Canoe Regatta Hall of Fame Committee announced this year’s 6 inductees, Spokesman Greg Davie told WCDO News who this year’s recipients are:

The induction ceremony will be held on the afternoon of Saturday May 27th during the Regatta weekend at General Clinton Park in Bainbridge.

Hartwick College and SUNY Oneonta announced that the OH-Fest on Saturday April 22nd. This year, there will be a street fair from 1:00 to 5:00 PM on Main Street; there will be a free concert in Neahwa Park from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM featuring Jesse McCartney.

Broome County Executive Jason Garnar announced his efforts to work with local municipalities under Governor Cuomo’s Shared Services Property Tax Savings Plan. The panel will be comprised of the Mayor or Supervisor from each city, town and village in Broome County. The first meeting of the Shared Services panel will be Thursday, April 13 at 10:00 AM at Cornell Cooperative Extension on Front Street; the public is invited to make recommendations at three public meetings. The first meeting is scheduled for Thursday, April 20th in the Decker Room of the Broome County Library from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. If the plan is approved it will be presented to the public in September 2017.

The Otsego County Planning Department is hosting a FREE training program tonight for members of planning boards and zoning boards of appeals. The workshop will be held at the Otsego County MEADOWS OFFICE COMPLEX, County Highway 33w, in Cooperstown.


State Police and the Broome County SIU Task Force executed a search warrant at 24 Dennison Avenue in Binghamton. Officers located and seized $2,834.00 in cash, plus, cocaine, marijuana, digital scales, materials used to package narcotics and a counterfeit $20.00 bill. 37 year old Shupin Cooper was charged with Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument, Criminal Possession of Controlled Substance, Criminal Use of Drug Paraphernalia & Unlawful Possession of Marijuana. Cooper was arraigned in the City of Binghamton Court and remanded to the Broome County Jail without bail.
