State Police arrested 44-year-old John Shapley of Afton for Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated with passengers less than 16 years old and with a B.A.C. result of .18%, as well as other traffic violations. Troopers responded to a 911 report of an accident on Oak Hill Road in the Town of Afton, Shapley is accused of driving while highly intoxicated, with his two children as passengers, he crossed into the opposing lane and caused another driver to swerve off the roadway, he then struck a mailbox and continued to drive to his home nearby. Shapley was arraigned in the Town of Afton and was remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $20,000 cash bail or $50,000 property bond.

192 new members of the State Police were added to the force at the 205th session graduation ceremony from the Basic School of the New York State Police Academy this morning in Albany. Trooper Arron Erickson of Jametown will be assigned to Troop C in Sidney:

Trooper erickson is one of 35 new troopers that are assigned to Troop C in Sidney.

New York State Court of Appeals upheld a state law that allows for a permanent suspension of driver’s licenses for repeat drunk driving offenders. The 5 justices ruled unanimously in favor of maintaining the law, which allows for the DMV Commissioner to have the authority to refuse to re-license drivers who have lost their licenses to repeated drunk driving convictions.

State Police arrested 26 Year Old Kimberly Steeley of Worcester for Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs and other traffic violations. The arrest occurred after an Otsego 911 report of an erratic driver on Chaseville Road in the Town of Maryland, a traffic stop was conducted when Steeley was observed making an unlawful U-turn. Troopers determined that Steeley was driving while impaired by drugs, the charge was a felony due to a prior DWI conviction. Steeley was issued tickets returnable to the Town of Maryland court on May 23rd.

State Police responded to the Morris High School Tuesday, following an alleged threat by a student to bring a gun to school. The unidentified 16-year-old male student was removed & was sent for a mental health evaluation. State Police said that no gun was located & no injuries were reported.

On Monday, State Police executed a search warrant in the Town of Milford. During the search, a quantity of heroin and cocaine as well as CASH, was seized, & 3 people were arrested on a variety of drug charges. Charged were 28 year old Richard Cushnie of Maryland,  37 year old Keith Blush, of Maryland, NY & 24 year old Kwannasia Barnes of Binghamton, all 3 were arraigned in Town of Milford court & were sent to the Otsego County Correctional Facility pending future court action.

The State Senate passed the “Community Heroes Protection Act” with a 55-7 vote. The bill sponsored by Senator Fred Akshar would designate crimes explicitly made against law enforcement and first responders punishable as hate crimes. A recent study found that 135 law enforcement officers were killed in the line of duty in 2016, the highest total since 2011. Of those killings, 21 came in ambush-style shootings – the highest total in more than two decades. The bill heads to the Assembly for consideration.
