State Police are continuing with their St. Patrick’s Day special detail through tomorrow. Drivers can still expect to encounter additional DWI patrols and a number of sobriety checkpoints, State Police will also be ticketing distracted drivers who are using handheld electronic devices and will also conduct underage drinking and unlawful sales to minors details during the campaign. Last year, Troopers arrested 132 people for DWI, issued 124 tickets for distracted driving and 5,576 tickets in total.

NYSEG is reporting that much of the power has been restored in the WCDO Listening area, Franklin still has the largest number of outages, with over 1300 earlier this afternoon, the Franklin school district was forced to cancel classes today due to the power outage.

The State DOT announced that beginning tomorrow, westbound State Route 17 in the Town of Sanford, will be closed for a culvert replacement, the project is expected to take about 2 weeks to complete. Drivers should follow the posted detour utilizing Exit 83, Broome County Route 28 westbound for half a mile, then left back onto State Route 17. Access for over-sized vehicles will be restricted throughout the duration of the closure.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested 41 year old Jeremy Stafford of Walton for 3rd degree burglary & and other related charges, on Sunday, Delaware County Sheriff’s office was notified by the Broome County Sheriff’s office that they had Stafford in custody on unrelated charges. Stafford was turned over to Delaware County & was being held at the Delaware County Correctional Facility pending arraignment.

NYSEG reported that about 2400 customers are without power this morning in the Tri-County Region, following last nights’ high winds & heavy rains. Crews will be out trying to restore power as soon as possible, the majority of the outages are in Delaware county, with more than 1400 out.

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 48 year old Scott Strain of Morris, for Dissemination of Indecent Material to Minors, Promoting a Sexual Performance of a Child and 3rd degree rape, following an investigation into a sex abuse complaint received from the New York State Child Abuse Hotline. Investigation revealed that Strain allegedly entered into a sexual relationship with a minor and did request and receive indecent material from the minor. A Search Warrant was executed Friday & Strain was taken in to custody. Strain was processed at the Sheriff’s Office and lodged in the Otsego County Correctional Facility for Arraignment. An order of protection was requested on behalf of the victim. The investigation is on-going and additional charges are pending.

Binghamton Police arrested 36 year old Patrick Shea for 2nd degree murder & 4th degree arson, following the investigation into the fire February 12th at 1 Main Street, where Binghamton firefighter John Gaudet died. The fire was ruled as an arson, Shea was arraigned by a Grand Jury in Broome County Court on Friday, he was remanded to the Broome County Jail without bail.

Norwich Police Department arrested 37 year old Leroy Lamar Lindsey for criminal sale & criminal possession of a controlled substance, plus forgery, following the investigation into the sale of Cocaine, Methamphetamine and use of counterfeit U.S. Currency. Norwich Police Department was able to make undercover purchases of cocaine and methamphetamine, plus Lindsey was allegedly circulating counterfeited $100 bills during this investigation. Lindsey was arraigned and was held on $25,000 bail to return to Norwich City Court at a later date.

48 year old Joseph Titsworth of Norwich has been apprehended in the state of Kentucky on Thursday, he was wanted as a fugitive from justice by the Norwich Police department, he was booked into the Henderson County Jail, he was wanted by Norwich Police since February 8th & is a Level 3 sex offender for a rape conviction dating back to 1996.

A Chenango County Grand Jury Indicted Danielle Froelich for criminal possession of a controlled substance, in connection with an incident on February 7th on State Highway 80 in the Town of Sherburne, where she allegedly possessed fentanyl with intent to sell. Froelich faces court action on the indictment at a later date.

55 year old Jeffrey Kaufman of Downsville was sentenced to 364 days in jail for each count of 3rd degree Assault. Kaufman admitted to attempting to assault Police Officers, on July 28, 2024. Officer Bryanna Houck of the Colchester Police Department was engaged in an unrelated traffic stop, Kaufman exited his residence & began to yell obscenities at Officer Houck, who called for & received assistance. the officers placed Kaufman under arrest for Obstruction of Governmental Administration and Disorderly Conduct, Kaufman attempted to damage the cruiser & spit on & kick at an officer & was still combative at the police station.

The State’s annual Burn Ban will start this Sunday March 16th & will run through May 14th. The DEC reported that the Open burning of debris is the single-largest cause of spring wildfires, when temperatures warm and the past fall’s debris and leaves dry out, wildfires can start and spread easily, further fueled by winds and a lack of green vegetation.

State Police arrested 51 year old Gordon Darling of Cortland, for 2nd degree Assault. Troopers were dispatched to reports of a disturbance between 2 men in Cortlandville, Darling struck the victim in the head with a sock filled with rocks. The victim was transported to Guthrie Cortland Medical Center where he was treated and released. Darling was processed & was transported to the Cortland County Correctional Facility for Arraignment.

The State Department of Labor reported that the number of private sector jobs in New York State increased over the month by 14,500, or 0.2%, to 8,466,400 in January. The State’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate held constant at 4.4% in January, the labor force participation rate decreased to 60.8%.

U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand blasted the Trump administration’s plan to fire more than 80,000 VA employees, including roughly 20,000 veterans, and to push back against the administration’s dishonest claim that these cuts will not affect veterans’ ability to access health care and receive the benefits they are owed.

28 year old Erin Hubbell of Margaretville pleaded guilty to violating the terms and conditions of her conditional discharge, she was sentenced to the maximum sentence of 364 days in the Delaware County Jail. On March 17, 2024, Erin Hubbell, & 3 other individuals, were arrested after a traffic stop of their vehicle and a search uncovered fentanyl, she pleaded guilty to Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, as part of her plea bargain she agreed to seek help for drug addiction and refrain from further violations, however, Hubbell was stopped by State Police On January 8th, a search of the vehicle led to the discovery of Cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin & other narcotics, she was arrested & still faces unrelated felony drug charges. The Delaware County District Attorney’s Office filed a request to declare her delinquent on the terms of her conditional discharge, leading to the latest sentence.

A Chenango County Grand Jury recently indicted Jason Chase was indicted for criminal possession of a controlled substance, The indictment accuses Chase of possessing fentanyl with intent to sell in the Town of Sherburne in February.

State Troopers are out in full force with the St. Patricks’s Day celebrations coming up this weekend. The STOP-DWI campaign runs through next Tuesday, with St. Patrick’s Day on Monday this year. In 2024, the troopers ran their St. Patrick’s Day campaign resulted in over 5,500 tickets, they arrested 132 for DWI infractions and they also investigated 199 crashes during that weekend.

A Chenango County grand jury recently indicted John Williams for 2nd-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, last November 7th at the Red Roof Inn on North Broad Street in the City of Norwich, Williams was allegedly found in possession of methamphetamine, fentanyl and cocaine with intent to sell.

GE Aerospace announced that they are investing $5 million at the Unison facility in Norwich. The investment will support quality and inspection equipment, new machines for production and tooling to support the design and production of alternators, sensors and ignition systems for military aircraft.

Delaware County District Attorney Shawn Smith announced the conviction of Duane Kinne of Walton pleaded guilty to 6 counts of Unlawful Surveillance, for secretly installing a camera in a bathroom shower and using the recordings for his own gratification, plus 1 count of Criminal Sexual Act for admitting to performing a sexual act on a boy less than 13 years old. Kinne will be sentenced at a later date.

Lieutenant Governor Antonio Delgado was in Oneonta Tuesday, he announced that the Utica Center for Development was holding their grand opening of a new veterans resource center in the Oneonta Armory. The State Department of Health announced the 1st case of measles in New York State outside of New York City in 2025, the 3rd case in the state this year. The case was identified in a patient less than 5 years of age in Suffolk County and was confirmed at the Department’s Wadsworth Laboratory in Albany. It has been determined there was potential exposure to measles for the public and persons who visited the pediatric emergency department at Cohen Children’s Medical Center on March 3 to March 4, or visited an inpatient child there on March 3 to March 6. More information is available at health.ny.gov/diseases. All New Yorkers are urged to protect themselves by making sure they’re up to date on vaccines.

The latest Sienna College Poll shows that Governor Kathy Hochul has the support of 46% of Democrats, with a commanding lead over Lt. Governor Antonio Delgado, 11%, and Rep. Ritchie Torres, 10%. Hochul’s favorability has 40% approval while 50% disapprove, with an even split on job approval (46-48%). President Trump’s favorability rating, 39% approve, while 57% disapprove, is little changed from last month, but his overall job approval rating was 42% favor & 55% disapprove, is down by 3% from February.

The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights sent letters to 60 universities under investigation for antisemitic discrimination and harassment, the department is investigating five universities for reports of antisemitic harassment. Additionally, 55 universities are under investigation or monitoring due to complaints to the department, including SUNY Binghamton and Cornell University.

A vehicle drove into to Advance Auto Parks store on Main Street in Oneonta on Monday afternoon, stopping just inside the front door area, all of the occupants in the vehicle were treated for minor injuries and released at the scene.

State Troopers will be out in full force with the St. Patrick’s Day celebrations coming up later this month. The STOP-DWI campaign will kick off Thursday, March 13 and last until Tuesday, March 18. St. Patrick’s Day is on Monday, March 17th this year. In 2024, the troopers ran their St. Patrick’s Day campaign from March 15th through March 17th. Attorney General Letitia James and a coalition of 7 other attorneys general filed a lawsuit Friday against the U.S. Department of Education for unlawfully canceling teacher pipeline grant programs that were authorized by Congress. The Teacher Quality Partnership and Supporting Effective Educator Development grant programs, which creates a new teacher pipeline to fill positions in hard-to-staff schools in rural and urban areas, helping hundreds of teachers-in-training to graduate and fill positions in schools experiencing teacher shortages.

State Police at Deposit responded Thursday to a fatal crash in the 4100 block of State Route 26 in the town of Nanticoke. Troopers, Maine Ambulance and Glen Aubrey Fire Department found that a Ford pick-up that had crashed, with the driver pinned underneath the tire. It was determined that the driver was already deceased by the time the first responders arrived. The driver is identified as 22 year old Sethe Menta of Lisle, Members of the Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Collision Reconstruction Unit also responded to the scene.

Walton Fire Department responded Sunday afternoon to a structure fire in the Town of Walton. The call came in as a chimney fire with the homeowner concerned that it had extended into the wall behind the wood stove as there was black smoke and the sound of fire within the walls. At 4:45 pm the homeowner reported seeing flames upstairs and was unsure if it was coming from walls or chimney. Sidney Center and Trout Creek departments were moved from their station to the scene and Franklin Fire Dept was requested for a tanker. By 5:17 the fire was reported under control with units checking for extension and doing overhaul work. No injuries were reported.

State Police executed a search warrant in the town of Solon as part of an investigation which resulted in the removal of 41 animals, including 5 goats, 2 cows, a pig, 28 chickens, 4 ducks and a cat were in need of immediate medical care. 38 year old Kyle Heller was also found to be in possession illegally of firearms because he is a convicted felon. Heller was charged with multiple counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Criminal Possession of an Assault Weapon, Charges related to the animals are pending as investigators are waiting for the veterinary reports. Troopers were assisted by the Susquehanna SPCA, the Cortland County SPCA and the DEC, Heller was transported to the Cortland County Correctional Facility for centralized arraignment. The investigation is on-going.

New York Attorney General Letitia James and a coalition of 19 other attorneys general today filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration for illegally firing thousands of probationary federal workers, including hundreds in New York. In the last week of February, 372 federal workers had filed for unemployment in New York. More than 1,000 Department of Veterans Affairs employees nationwide were fired in February, including workers at VA medical centers in New York. In Buffalo and Syracuse, more than 100 Internal Revenue Service employees have been fired at the height of tax season. The coalition is seeking a court order to stop further mass layoffs without notice and the reinstatement of all illegally fired federal workers who have been laid off since January 20, 2025.

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office announces the arrest of 37 year old Joseph Scianablo of Cooperstown following an investigation in to a 2023 larceny. it was discovered that Scianablo was a level 2 sex offender, who had relocated to Florida in 2023 without making the proper notifications to the New York State Sex Offender Registry, he turned himself in Wednesday to the Otsego County Sheriff’s Office on an active arrest warrant issued through the Middlefield Town Court. he was processed and was held at the Otsego County Correctional Facility to await Arraignment.

Daylight Saving Time begins at 2:00 am Sunday Morning, where people move their clocks ahead one hour. The Firefighters Association of the State of New York (FASNY) is urging everyone to check their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors at that time.

The State DEC announced that hunters in New York harvested an estimated 1,685 bears during the 2024 hunting season, which was 24% higher than 2023 and approximately 13% higher than the five- and 10-year averages, an estimated 1,028 bears came here in the Southern Zone.

Broome County District Attorney’s Office announced that 21 year old Lavar McDaniel was sentenced in Broome County Court to 8 years in State Prison, followed by 5 years of post release supervision, for Criminal Possession of a Weapon. The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 44 year old Karli Sydor of Albany after an investigation into falsified business records involving medicine. Sydor turned herself in to the Otsego County Sheriff’s Office today, she was charged with 3 counts of falsifying business records, for allegedly altering medical records to cover shortages in medicine after failing to resupply orders in a timely fashion. She was fired as a nurse immediately, and left the area and a warrant was issued for her arrest, she is scheduled to appear in Middlefield town court at a later date.

State Police arrested 25 year old Nathanael Moon of Franklin Sunday for Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs. Troopers initiated a traffic stop after observing a vehicle traveling on Main Street in the city of Oneonta at an abnormally slow speed, Moon was asked to perform Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, which confirmed impairment. Moon was arrested and transported to SP Oneonta where he was additionally evaluated by a New York State Police Drug Recognition Expert. Moon was processed and issued appearance tickets to the Oneonta City Court on April 2nd, and was released to a sober third party.

34 year old Jade Pittsley of Binghamton was sentenced in Federal Court to 8 years in prison following her guilty plea to escaping from federal custody and possessing and intending to distribute methamphetamine. As part of her prior guilty plea, Pittsley admitted that in November 2023, while she was serving a federal term of imprisonment for a drug offense involving methamphetamine, she was under the supervision of a halfway house. Pittsley was directed to return to the halfway house but never did. Days later, law enforcement found Pittsley carrying methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia in her purse. Pittsley was also sentenced to a 4-year term of supervised release after she is released from prison.
